Forensic Statement Analysis to determine Personality Traits-A Case Study

Written statement contains a wealth of information far beyond what the suspect or victim intends to communicate. The technique of Forensic Statement Analysis is an effective strategy in trait-based approaches for personality assessment utilized by various Forensic Investigators or Experts. Investigators examine and analyse the words within the written statement to get information about the writer. This technique is also useful to detect deception or truthfulness in the written statements, sometimes provided unintentionally by the writer, which are independent of case facts. Statement analysis provides investigators with vital background data or details about writer in terms of personality, relationships with others, motives or goals, attitude, behaviour. It can also determine whether the intent of the statement is to convey or convince. The present study describes a case consisting of several diaries of a deceased lady which were submitted in the Laboratory by investigating agency with a request to expedite opinion on multiple queries with respect to her mindset, past life, relationships, conflicts, any future plans, job, and religious belief. After thorough scientific examination and analysis of the contents or statements executed in the diaries, a conclusive opinion was expressed by Forensic Experts regarding her personality traits.

Better regulation and the social acquis

The aim of this paper is to focus on a specific part of the Better Regulation procedures: the Regulatory Fitness and Performance programme (REFIT). Within the Better Regulation process, the REFIT programme is, more specifically, focussed on evaluating existing legislation. The REFIT programme began in 2010 when the European Commission announced that it would be reviewing EU legislation in selected policy fields through ‘fitness checks’ in order to keep current regulation ‘fit for purpose’. This included identifying ‘excessive regulatory burdens, overlaps, gaps, inconsistencies and/or obsolete measures which may have appeared over time. Pilot exercises began in 2010 in four areas: employment and social policy, environment, transport and industrial policy.’ In employment and social policy, the fitness check exercise was launched in the area of informing and consulting workers on the national level, with the evaluation of three Directives. The Commission then included Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) in the REFIT Programme. The third area evaluated was the Written Statement Directive. The paper analyses the REFIT as applied to the social field, through an evaluation of the REFIT Programme in the three areas where fitness checks have already been carried out. Our main conclusion is that the REFIT Programme has certainly legitimised the European Commission’s lack of action and has fulfilled its social agenda. However, at the end of the evaluation programmes, the REFIT has not yet led to deregulation. On the contrary, some gaps have been identified which have led the Commission to begin a legislative review process.

Online gaming has existed in some form for slightly more than 20 years. The growth and popularity of online gaming can be partially credited to three important events: 1) in 1995, Microgaming was the first to pioneer and disseminate online gaming software; 2) software was introduced that allowed for the secure transfer of funds over the internet; and 3) the acceptance of a wager online by InterCasino, which was based in Antigua. Shortly after the emergence of online gaming sites abroad, Congress began to express concern over Americans accessing virtual casinos and sportsbooks. Early congressional concerns centered on underage access, pervasiveness of illicit material, anonymity, and the integrity of online gambling operators. Many of these concerns persist today. These issues, in addition to concerns about the integrity surrounding real-world sporting events and video game competitions (i.e. esports), should be at the forefront of the minds of state and federal legislators when developing new gaming legislation. The rise of daily fantasy sports (“DFS”) and traditional fantasy sports has demonstrated that many Americans have an interest in some forms of sports gambling. Interest in fantasy sports is dwarfed by the popularity of other forms of betting, as evidenced by the estimated $10.4 billion wagered on single events like the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament and $4.7 billion wagered on the 2017 Super Bowl. Americans are already betting on sports. Many are betting on sports through DFS contests, others are betting at Nevada sportsbooks, some are betting with neighborhood bookies, but the vast majority are betting online in a grey market. Efforts to stop or curb online sports gambling have failed. There is a need to develop a more effective and efficient plan to implement a regulatory system that protects customers, and operators. Within this statement we address four important considerations for the regulation of DFS and online gaming moving forward: 1) federal law; 2) state law; 3) virtual currencies; and 4) consumer protections.

Detecting Deception by Analyzing Written Statements in Korean

This paper delves into the effect of SCAN and its cross-linguistic applicability by analyzing written statements in Korean. For this research, we conducted an experiment in which truth tellers were asked to write a true statement about a staged event and liars a fabricated one about the same event. We analyzed these two types of written statements using the criteria of SCAN. The results (accuracy rate, 81.6%) indicate that SCAN is effective in detecting deception despite the low internal consistency level among coders (Cronbach’s alpha level, 0.577). It was also shown that the SCAN criteria are not universally applicable across languages as the mode of using pronouns in Korean yields no significant difference between truthful and deceptive statements.

O-083 Algerian’s National Plan For Eradication Of Poliomyelitis: Paediatric Intensive Care Unit Surveillance And Management Of Acute Flaccid Paralysis (afp)

Purpose/objective In 1988, the World Health Organisation (WHO) adopted a resolution calling for eradication of poliomyelitis. In Algeria, the Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance is a Key strategy for polio eradication The objective of the national program for poliomyelitis eradication is to keep Algeria as a zone free of Polio and to obtain the WHO certificate. In the present work, we describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of AFP: age, gender, autonomic disorders, albuminocytologic dissociation of CSF, artificial ventilation, and mortality. Materials and methods Prospective analysis of all cases of AFP from September 1994 to June 2013. Since 1997, we began systematically sending: Written statements of AFP on special forms to the Algerian Health Ministry and stools culture for the Polio virus to Algerian’s Pasteur Institute. AFP was diagnosed clinically through historical and clinical examination. The underlying cause of AFP was investigated by appropriate laboratory tests, such as serum electrolytes, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, nervous conduction study and stools culture for Polio virus. Results We report 198 cases of AFP. No case of poliomyelitis has been diagnosed. Mechanical ventilation was necessary in more than 30% of cases. Since 2008, use of intravenous immunoglobulin (IV IG) seems to improve the mortality of AFP. 8% (n = 198) vs. 4% (n = 47). All deaths are related to the existence of severe neuro-vegetative disorders. The last case of poliomyelitis reported, in Algeria, was in ILLIZI (extreme south east) in 1996. Conclusions Eradication of Poliomyelitis is a priority of public health in Algeria.

Differences in Word Usage by Truth Tellers and Liars in Written Statements and an Investigative Interview After a Mock Crime

AbstractAlthough much is known about word usage differences between truths and lies, most of the research to date involves an examination of truths and lies in low stakes situations, written statements or interviews but not both, and native speakers of a single language. We examined differences in word usage between truth tellers and liars in a moderately high stakes, real‐life scenario (mock crime) involving participants from four cultural/ethnic groups—European‐Americans, Chinese, Hispanics and Middle Easterners. Each participant produced a written statement and participated in an investigative interview; word usage in both was analyzed. Word usage differentiated truths from lies in both the written statement and the investigative interview, and the effect sizes associated with these findings were substantial. For the written statement, word usage predicted truths from lies at 68.90% classification accuracy; for the investigative interview, word usage predicted truths from lies at 71.10% accuracy. Ethnicity did not moderate these effects. These findings are discussed in terms of their implications to cross‐cultural applicability of the psychological demands placed on liars and in terms of their practical field utility.
