An interdisciplinary approach to development of watershed simulation models

A workshop approach for the rapid development of simulation models is described. The key feature of the approach is intimate involvement of resource specialists in the model building process, so that communication between resource disciplines is greatly enhanced. Two watershed models that have been developed in one-week workshop meetings are described to show thekinds of factors that can be considered. One model is concerned with small coastal watersheds in the Pacific Northwest, and the other deals with part of the James Bay Area, Quebec. Both of these models have helped scientists of Environment Canada identify major information needs that are not being considered in current research and management programs; in particular, little is known about the dynamics of recreational demand.

Teacher-education workers throughout the nation are alert to the exemplary man ner in which basic problems have been attacked on a statewide level in Indiana. Progress in that state has tended to focus attention upon the nature of the organiza tional structure—the obvious welding to gether of diversified elements having a stake in the problem. Mr. Jeep, Professor of Education, Ball State Teachers College, Muncie, not only describes procedures, but also points out some conclusions at least tentatively accepted at the moment.
