YIELD AND FRUIT QUALITY OF WONDERFUL POMEGRANATE TREES (Punica granatum L.) AS INFLUENCED BY SPRAYING ROYAL JELLY

Nutritional status, yield and fruit quality of Wonderful pomegranate trees grown in sandy calcareous soil in response to spraying Royal jelly at 0.0125, 0.0250 and 0.050% and frequencies, once (at the end May) twice (at the end of May and again at mid-June) and three applications (at the end May, mid-June and the end of August) were investigated during 2017 and 2018 seasons. spraying Royal jelly was very effective in improving the leaf area, leaf chlorophylls contents and total carotenoids, N, P, and K, yield and fruit quality rather than non- application. The gradual Increasing in Royal jelly concentration and frequencies was remarkably enhancing yield and fruit quality. However, non-significant differences were observed between the two heights concentrations. The best results with regard to vegetative growth, yield and fruit quality of Wonderful pomegranate trees grown under sandy calcareous soil were obtained when the trees received three sprays of Royal jelly at 0.05%. However non-significant differences were obtained between the two highest concentrations of Royal Jelly namely; 0.0250 and 0.050%.

RESPONSE OF WONDERFUL POMEGRANATE TO PRE-HARVEST SPRAY BY POTASSIUM, IRON AND BORON AS ALTERNATIVE TO FERTIGATION

During 2017 and 2018 seasons, Wonderful pomegranate treated with potassium sulphate (K2SO4) and/or ferrous sulphate (FeSO4) and boric acid (H3BO3). The main object was examining the effect of these three compounds and their interaction on trees flowering, yield and leaf mineral content. Treating the trees three times with K2SO4, FeSO4and H3BO3 caused a remarkable stimulation on number of total and perfect flowers, compared with untreated control. Furthermore, treating the trees with K2SO4 and/or FeSO4& H3BO3 caused increasing yield (Kg/tree) and very effective in enhancing leaf N, P & K%. The combined application of the three compounds was superior than the single application of each compound on enhancing all flowering aspects and yield and improved leaves NPK. For enhancing flowering, crop of yields and leaf mineral contents (NPK) of Wonderful pomegranate, it is suggested to spray the trees with a mixture of K2SO4 and/or FeSO4 and H3BO3 three times yearly during the fruit growth cycle.

IMPROVING FRUIT QUALITY OF WONDERFUL POMEGRANATE BY USING FOLIAR APPLICATION OF POTASSIUM, IRON AND BORON

This study was carried out during 2017 and 2018 seasons, in order to investigate the effect of single and combined application of potassium sulphate (K2SO4), ferrous sulphate (FeSO4) and boric acid (H3BO3) on fruit physical, chemical properties and maturation of Wonderful pomegranate trees grown in sandy soil under Minia Governorate conditions. Results showed that increasing the concentration of K2SO4 from 0.5 to 1.5%, FeSO4 from 100 to 200 ppm or/and H3BO3 was very effective in fruit weight (g). While, the three examined compounds significantly decreased fruit cracked (%) and fruit sunburned (%) during the two experimental season. Application of the three examined compounds together significantly surpassed than untreated control or each compound alone terms of improved fruit physical and chemical properties, while, juice total acidity was significantly decreased. For producing favorable fruit physical properties of Wonderful pomegranate grown under sandy soil, it is necessary to spray the trees with mixture of potassium sulphate at 1.5%, ferrous sulphate at 200 ppm and boric acid at 100 ppm three times yearly during the fruit growth cycle.

Pomegranate juice to reduce fecal calprotectin levels in inflammatory bowel disease patients with a high risk of clinical relapse: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

BackgroundInflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic condition characterized by recurrent episodes of intestinal inflammation and is thought to be related to an autoimmune reaction to genetic and environmental factors. Although evidence indicates that a polyphenolic-rich diet plays an important role in modulating aspects of chronic inflammation, few studies have focused on the effect of ellagitannin (ET)-rich food consumption on long-term remission maintenance in IBD patients with a high risk of clinical relapse. Therefore, we hypothesize that supplementation with a pomegranate juice, a naturally rich source of ETs, could significantly modulate the markers of mucosal and systemic inflammation relative to a control group receiving a placebo.Methods/designThis double-blind, randomized controlled trial includes patients with IBD involving the colorectum who have been in stable therapy for at least the three previous months and have a high risk of clinical relapse. Participants are randomly allocated to one of two groups: active supplementation (125 mL of cv. Wonderful pomegranate juice) or placebo (125 mL) taken twice daily for 12 weeks. The primary outcome is changes in the fecal neutrophil-derived protein calprotectin, a surrogate marker of mucosal improvement, between the two groups from baseline to 12 weeks later. The secondary outcomes include transcriptomic changes in peripheral blood mononuclear cells and intestinal biopsies and changes in circulating inflammatory markers and trimethylamine-N-oxide levels. Pomegranate ET-derived metabolites are identified and quantified in plasma and urine samples.DiscussionThe results will provide information on the possible reduction of fecal calprotectin levels following the consumption of pomegranate juice. The findings will also show the in vivo metabolism of pomegranate ETs. Finally, the effect of 12-week pomegranate juice consumption on local and systemic inflammatory markers will be elucidated, which will likely provide additional insights into the maintenance of remission in IBD patients.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03000101. Effect of Cold Treatment as a Post-Harvest Treatment for Killing Immature Stages of the Peach Fruit Fly, Bactrocera zonata (Diptera: Tephritidae) and its Effect on Fruit Quality of Pomegranate

Pomegranate fruits were artificially infested with immature stages (eggs and larval instars) of peach fruit fly Bactrocera zonata and stored at 1.7ᵒC for 14 days. Results showed that the effectiveness of cold treatment against B.zonata was demonstrated by 100% mortality in all immature stages. Also the results indicated that wonderful pomegranate fruits could be stored for 8 weeks (two weeks at 1.7oC plus six weeks at 10°C and RH 85-90%) as storage or shipping temperature. Fruits transferred directly from quarantine treatment to room temperature 25±2°C and RH 45-50% had shelf life of two weeks without chilling injury symptoms plus two weeks at 1.7oC. Concerning the data dealing with packing methods, carton box (5kilo) lined with perforated lifespan was the best in comparison with other methods.

تأثير إضافة المخصبات الأحيائية والرش بالمحلول المغذي كاليبور في نمو شتلات الرمان صنف Wonderful

نفذت التجربة في أحد الحقول التابعة لقسم البستنة وهندسة الحدائق /كلية الزراعة - جامعة ديالي للمدة 2016- 2- 24 لغاية 2017- 6- 1على شتلات رمان صنف Wonderful بهدف معرفة تأثير المعاملة بخليط من المخصبــات الأحيائيــة والرش بالمحلول المغذي كاليبور في صفات النمو الخضري لشتلات الرمان صنف Wonderful. استخدمت شتلات رمان بعمر سنتين متساوية الحجم قدر الامكان وأضيف المخصب الأحيائي الحاوي على بكتريا من النوعين Azospirillum brasilense وPseudomonas flourescense إلى وسط النمو المخصص لكل شتلة بتراكيز0، 10، 20غم. نبات- 1 بتاريخ 2016/2/24 ورشت الشتلات بأربعة تراكيز من المحلول المغذي (كاليبور) (7، 5، 3. 5، 0 مل. لتر- 1)ونفذت التجربة باستخدام تصميم القطاعات كاملة التعشية(RCBD ويمكن تلخيص نتائج التجربة بالآتي: 1- أدت إضافة المخصب الاحيائــي إلى زيادة معنوية في جميع معايير النمو الخضرية للشتلات قياساً بمعاملة المقارنة وأعطى المستوى الثالث من المخصب أعلى القيم لمتوسط الزيادة في قطر الساق الرئيس وطوله والمحتوى النسبي للكلوروفيل في الأوراق عند كلا موسمي النمو. أدى الرش بالمحلول المغذي كاليبور إلى إحداث زيادة معنوية في جميع معايير النمو الخضرية ولكلا موسمـــي النمو، ولم يختلف التركيز الثاني والثالث من المحلول عن بعضهما معنويا في جميع الصفات الخضرية ولكلا موسمي النمو (باستثناء صفة قطر الساق في الموسم الثاني)، وأزداد التأثير الايجابي في الصفات السابقة عند تداخل العاملين (المخصب الأحيائي والمحلول المغـذي) وحقق التداخل بين التركيزين الثاني والثالث من المحلول المغذي مع المستوى الثالث من المخصب الاحيائي أعلى مقدار للزيادة في جميع الصفات الخضرية قياساً بمعاملة المقارنة. 2- أدت إضافة المخصب الأحيائي بجميع مستوياته إلى إحداث زيادة معنوية في تركيز النتروجين والفسفور في الأوراق في كلا موسمي النمو قياساً بمعاملة المقارنة. أدى الرش بالمحلول المغذي بالتركيزين الثاني والثالث إلى حصول زيادة معنوية في العناصر الغذائية NP في الأوراق عند كلا موسمي النمو قياساً بمعاملة المقارنة. كما حقق التداخل بين المستوى الثالث من المخصب الاحيائي والتركيز الثاني من المحلول المغذي والمستوى الثاني من المخصب الاحيائي مع التركيز الثالث من المحلول المغذي اختلافا معنوياً في تركيز النتروجين في الأوراق موسمي النمو الأول والثاني على التوالي قياساً بمعاملة المقارنة التي سجلت أقل نسبة في حين سجلت معاملة التداخل بين المستوى الثالث للمخصب والتركيز الثالث من المحلول المغذي أعلى نسبة مئوية في تركيز الفسفور في الأوراق عند كــلا موسمــي النمو قياساً بمعاملــة المقارنة التي حققت أقل نسبة مئوية.

Formulation and storage effects on pomegranate smoothie phenolic composition, antioxidant capacity and color

Smoothies are an increasingly popular way of consuming fruits and the industry is focusing on the increment of shelf life and the maintenance original color and the content of bioactive compounds. The aim of the present study was to evaluate how formulation and storage conditions (6 months at 4 or 20 °C) of different pomegranate smoothies affected on functional compounds. Phenolic compounds, antioxidant capacity (ABTS, FRAP) and color of 12 different smoothies were studied. The study was completed evaluating the effect of ratio purée:juice (60:40 or 40:60), pomegranate cultivar (Mollar de Elche or Wonderful) and fruit purée (quince, jujube, or fig) on studied smoothies. The smoothies before storage presented high values of total polyphenolic content (TPC): 247–314 mg/100 g fresh weight (fw), 2939–3920 mg/100 g fw, and 3809–5324 mg/100 g fw, in fig, jujube and quinces pomegranate smoothies, respectively. A positive effect of the 40:60 ratio purée:juice, the Wonderful pomegranate juice storing at 4 °C was found on total polyphenolic content [sum of anthocyanins, flavanols, flavan-3-ols (as monomeric and dimeric), polymeric procyanidins and phenolic acids] and quality of smoothies (a* coordinate) being only a reduction of 30.1%, 13.1% and 9.5% in fig, jujube and quinces smoothies, respectively.

Mesocarp and Exocarp of Laffan and Wonderful Pomegranate Varieties: By-Products as a Source of Ellagitannins

Pomegranate peel (exocarp and mesocarp), which constitutes about 50% of the whole fresh fruit, is extensively used in folk medicine but discarded in large quantities as by-product, after the juice production. The objective was to valorize this by-product derived from Laffan and Wonderful varieties, by improving the knowledge on its composition and by applying sustainable extraction processes.The extraction was performed separately on exocarp and mesocarp, using water at different temperatures, and 70% ethanol; the ellagitannins were determined by HPLC-DAD and MS- TOF. The polysaccharide fraction was extracted and determined by weight (yields). The profiles of mesocarp and exocarp separately of the two varieties were very similar and characterized by the same ellagitannins (ETs) of pomegranate juice. The highest ETs amount was obtained from mesocarp (140 - 150 mg/dried matter) via decoction and hydroalcoholic extraction. No ETs degradation was observed during decoction, α and β punicalagins were always 59 – 78 % of the total ETs. Decoction as a green process easy to apply can help to valorize these by-products as it is able to recover polysaccharides as well as ellagitannins. A Nutritional label was prepared for the whole dry decoction from Wonderful mesocarp.

Improving Quality of Wonderful Pomegranate by Using Bagging and Different Agrochemical Treatments

The present study was carried out during the two successive seasons of 2014 and 2015 on five years old Wonderfulpomegranate cultivar (Punica granatum, L) in order to investigate the effect of fruit bagging, spraying with lime milk,super nano, CaCO3, vitamin C and kaolin, as well as, nitrogen and potassium fertilization on the fruit quality especiallythe incidence of sunburn. The obtained results showed that all treatments significantly affected fruit sunburn percentageand number of sunburned fruits, especially bagging, super nano and kaolin sprays. A significant decrease in the sunburnseverity occurred with the bagging and super nano sprays treatments. All different treatments increased fruit TSS andvitamin C. Spraying super nano on the fruit was the best in increasing TSS/acidity ratio. Spraying lime milk or super nanoon the tree and were the best in increasing fruit anthocyanin content.

IMPROVING FRUIT QUALITY OF MANFALOTY AND WONDERFULL POMEGRANATES BY USING BAGGING AND SOME SPRAY TREATMENTS WITH GIBBERELLIC ACID, CALCIUM CHLORIDE AND KAOLIN.

This study was carried out during the two successive seasons of 2012 and 2013 on Manfaloty and Wonderful pomegranate trees at5 and 3-years old respectively, the trees were spaced at 4x4 m. grown in a sandy soil. The highest values of yield and its components i.e., fruit weight, fruit number /tree and yield /tree were recorded when Manfaloty and Wonderful pomegranate trees treated with GA3 at 50 or 100ppm, CaCl2 4 %, kaolin 2.5 or 5 % and bagging treatment. The lowest percentage of fruit creaking and sunburn were obtained with bagging treatment followed by kaolin 5% and spraying by CaCl2 and GA3 treatments compared with the control treatment .All treatments caused a highly significant increase in Marketable fruits %. Bagging treatment gave the highest Marketable fruits percentage compared with the control and other treatments. The highest fruit length and diameter obtained by GA3 50 or 100ppm and CaCl2 2 or 4% treatment. Furthermore,GA3, kaolin and bagging treatments improvedSSC, total acidity and SSC/acid ratio ,meanwhile the highest anthocyanin content in juice and peel was obtained by bagging and spraying kaolin 5% treatments in both cultivars. Therefore, these treatments could be recommended for improving Manfaloty and Wonderfull pomegranate cvs performance under similar conditions of this study.

HPLC–PDA–MS fingerprinting to assess the authenticity of pomegranate beverages

HPLC with fluorescence, PDA and mass spectrometric detection were used to analyse the (poly)phenol content of a Bordeaux red wine, POM Wonderful pomegranate juice and three other beverages advertised as being made from 100% pomegranate juice. The red wine and POM Wonderful juice contained characteristic anthocyanin profiles with the latter also being characterised by the presence of ellagitannins and the former by flavan-3-ols monomers and procyanidin dimers and trimers. The three other pomegranate products all contained the expected ellagitannins but their anthocyanin profiles were a mixture of red wine and pomegranate anthocyanins. They also contained flavan-3-ol monomers and procyanidin dimers and trimers, components not usually detected in 100% pomegranate beverages. The HPLC-based procedures, therefore, provide a straight-forward means of accessing the authenticity of pomegranate-based products with the ready detection of constituents derived from red grapes.
