Revitalizing Women as Heads of Families in Aceh (Conflict and Post-Conflict Period)

The protracted conflict in Aceh made women feel more suffering, both physically and mentally. Women are the backbone of the family because their husbands are kidnapped, killed, wandering in search of a safe place. Women who are abandoned by their husbands are often faced with negative stigma. The term woman as the head of the family is an effort to change the view of widowed women to be positioned in the position of roles and responsibilities as the head of the family. Women can be independent with support from various parties towards independent and prosperous, just and dignified families. Post-conflict women as heads of families have a role in women's economic empowerment such as women's savings and loans, joining cooperatives of non-governmental organizations and contributing to village development and development.

Gender Equality: Marital Name Changing Attitude and Plan

In Nigeria just like other parts of the world, women have made remarkable achievements in creating awareness on girl's enrollment in school, violence against women and girls, women's economic empowerment, access to sexual and reproductive health and rights, women's voice, women leadership and influence, women's participation in peace and security, equality in the workplace, and household responsibilities in relation to the campaign for gender equality . However, this is not without incurring the wrath of the Nigerian male chauvinist in government. The most recent example is the throwing out of the Nigerian Senate the bill seeking equal rights to women in marriage, job and education for the third time at the plenary; quoting and citing the Quran, the Bible and the constitution as a basis for their reservations .

Social and economic empowerment of women through financial inclusion: empirical evidence from India

PurposeWomen empowerment becomes an important policy discussion in development economics and modernization theory. The empowerment of women can lead to an increase in the quality viz-a-viz the capacity of human resources accessible for economic development. The purpose of this study is to evidence the impact of social and economic dimensions on women empowerment through financial inclusion in rural India.Design/methodology/approachTo reveal the research objective, the study has utilized a primary survey of women respondents from the Gujarat state of India by a simple random sampling method and applied a logistic regression approach to identify the relationship between the need of a bank account (determinant of financial inclusion) as a dependent variable and social and economic dimensions of women empowerment such as earning status, participation in financial decision-making, recipient of social welfare schemes and perception towards the safety of saving as independent variables.FindingsThe results of this study show that earning status, participation in financial decision-making at household level and recipient of social welfare schemes by women have a significant impact on women empowerment through financial inclusion; however, safety of their savings is observed as an insignificant variable, yet the odd value is very high (2.437) in the present study.Originality/valueThe present study is the first of its kind to examine the social and economic status of women and its impact on their requirement of a formal bank account for the overall empowerment of women in rural India.

Challenges and Difficulties facing Islamic Financial Inclusion in Women's Economic Empowerment in Yemen: Qualitative Approach

The study aimed to explore the challenges and difficulties faced by Islamic financial inclusion through Islamic financial institutions (banks, microfinance, insurance) in women's economic empowerment in Yemen. This will lead to enhance women's place in economic development when finding appropriate solutions to these challenges. This study applied the qualitative approach by conducting in-depth interviews with the experts comprising eighteen respondents in Islamic financial institutions. The result of respondents showed that there are a number of challenges and difficulties associated with the environment that have implications for overall institutional action and directly or indirectly contribute to women's economic empowerment. Where customs and traditions constitute the biggest external challenge facing Islamic financial institutions, as well as women's financial illiteracy, and the unstable political conditions that Yemen is going through. In addition to internal topics associated with the policies of those institutions themselves, they are ultimately subject to the impact of external problems and challenges. Furthermore, the results of the study will help decision-makers to activate the role of compulsory in society and implement effective plans and strategies to empower women economically.

Determinants of Women's Economic Empowerment in Selected Arab Countries for the Period (2000-2018)

This study examines the determinants of economic empowerment of women in selected Arab countries (Iraq, Qatar, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the Arab Republic of Egypt and Algeria) during the period (2000-2018), using the usual small squares method, and in this study we reviewed the concept and the economic determinants that affect empowerment Women, which in turn affect all other variables in these countries, the most important of which are the political and social aspects. In order to know the specific factors for women's economic empowerment, the study adopted the quantitative method to estimate these factors which are (the ratio of women’s enrollment in secondary education to males, average life expectancy at birth for males and females, fertility rate, per capita GDP). The results of the study found that the most important factors affecting the economic empowerment of women in most Arab countries are health, the proportion of women’s enrollment in secondary education to males, average life expectancy at birth for males and females, per capita gross domestic product that had a significant and positive impact, while the fertility rate was found. It appeared morally and negatively.

Nonfarm employment is an increasing form of employment in rural areas in Sub-Saharan Africa. This is partly because many of the workers in developing countries especially in Sub-Saharan Africa are self-employed workers.  Most women in Uganda do not own land since customary land ownership system deprives women of owning land. This has pushed women to nonfarm employment in urban areas, semi-rural, and rural areas. This paper explored the implications of nonfarm rural employment on the social and economic empowerment of women in rural areas. The findings revealed that nonfarm rural employment boosts women’s income, puts women in leadership positions in women’s groups such as the savings groups, and empowers women to become independent by reducing economic dependence on men or their husbands while also providing women with decision making power both in the community and households. Additionally, successful women in nonfarm employment, especially self-employed women, are role models and a motivation to other rural women to venture into nonfarm employment. Being successful as a woman in nonfarm employment also comes along with leadership roles and high social status in the community.   Key words: Nonfarm employment, women empowerment, rural nonfarm economy, Uganda.

WOMEN ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT IN PAKISTAN: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF LEGAL FRAMEWORK

Pakistan is a country that has been facing the biggest problem of gender inequality since its inception and has been considered one of the worst performers for decades, especially in terms of women's economic empowerment. Strategic analysis shows that this threat is the result of religious misrepresentation as well as many political, socio-economic and cultural barriers. Rendering to world economic forum report of 2018, Pakistan is classified 148th out of 149 countries. In Pakistan, women, who make up about half of the population, are deprived of basic services such as domestic violence, poverty, poor health, economic dependence and low literacy rates, with little difference between metropolitan and rural life. At the same time, this research should carefully address this issue and point out that legal reforms are necessary and indispensable for the participation of women in the economic development of the country. This will be a first stride to provide objective measure of how specific regulations, implementation and protection of inheritance of property right affect women’s inclusive participation in economic development. The study is correlated to new index introduced by WBL2019 which is structured around eight indicators that encompass different stages of women’s working life, provide essential grounds for economic standing of women, the particular emphasis will be on seventh indicator that is managing assets that involves ownership and inheritance of property. Influence Of Microfinance On Economic Empowerment Of Women

Women have competencies of changing the society along with the world. In developing countries, women are facing evil of gender discrimination. Men and women are not equally privileged but scenario is changing now because females are being empowered but still women are suffering from gender inequality problem. Women empowerment is need of hour for development of the world. The government took initiative in form of microfinance to carry forward women in life. So, it becomes necessary to analyse influence of microfinance on women empowerment. It is based on descriptive research design with using multistage sampling technique. The sample size is 400 rural women beneficiaries of Haryana and information is collected by pre-designed questionnaire through interview Data is conducted through SPSS. Regression and correlation analysis is used to examine data through SPSS. Microfinance measured through micro-credit and micro saving. Economic empowerment selected indicators are household income and household saving. The researchers found that there is positive impact of microfinance on economic empowerment of women. This study will be fruitful for the government, microfinance institutions and banks in policies making to empower women. This study could encourage women for savings and investing activities. It might inspire women to take part in microfinance schemes

A priority action roadmap for women's economic empowerment (PARWEE) amid COVID-19: a co-creation approach

PurposeThe study aims to co-create a “priority action roadmap for women's economic empowerment” based on women's top priorities to charting recovery directions. Doing so contributes to the growing body of knowledge on COVID-19 literature in at least four areas: assessing COVID-19 impacts on women entrepreneurs; mapping these impacts with four interdependent women's entrepreneurial ecosystem components; innovating a co-creation methodology based on remote participatory research; and providing a replicable model to perform action-oriented research in the context of COVID-19 impacts.Design/methodology/approachA co-creation methodology is proposed, combining systems-thinking and remote participatory research to engage women entrepreneurs and institutional stakeholders to prioritize impact, response actions and recovery needs in the wake of COVID-19. A ranking exercise using the analytic hierarchy process was used to derive ranking and assess user inputs' consistency.FindingsThe study exemplifies the integration of participatory methods and mathematical tool to engage stakeholders in prioritizing recovery work. PARWEE action items ranked by entrepreneurs and vetted by institutional stakeholders cover: access to finances, capacity building, health care, public and private partnership, marketing opportunities and formation of active advocacy groups to voice out women entrepreneurs' needs to institutional stakeholders. Results show a slight difference in the ranking of priority actions between experience owners and fresh starters.Originality/valueThis study innovated a new co-creation methodology for remotely engaging stakeholders of the women's entrepreneurial ecosystem, which is grounded in evidence and provides a replicable model for performing action-oriented research.

Role of cooperatives in economic empowerment of women: a review of Indian experiences

PurposeWomen establish about half of the world's population and constitute a significant part of the workforce. Women's empowerment is considered as an entry point for women's integration and inclusion into development. Economic independence is recognized as the key to women's empowerment. Economic independence provides women with autonomy in other aspects of their life. By organizing them into groups and providing financial freedom by enhancing the livelihood of women, cooperatives are playing an essential role in the empowerment of women. In the last two decades, self-help group (SHGs) has evolved as an informal form of cooperative and has played a very important role in women empowerment.Design/methodology/approachThis paper is an attempt to explore the role of cooperatives in women empowerment. Firstly, an intensive search of literature was done to identify the role of cooperatives in bringing women empowerment in the Scopus database. This data were analysed to look at the trends in research using VOSviewer. Later, the findings of this study are supported by field observation.FindingsThe paper also develops a framework for women empowerment through cooperatives and reviews the field experiences to support the framework. The paper concludes that the theory of economic modernity holds true for women empowerment, as economic independence through cooperatives has helped women gain access to control over resources and led to women empowerment.Research limitations/implicationsThe paper develops a framework and supports the findings that economic independence is a key to women empowerment, and cooperatives are playing an important role in the same. It will help practitioners in framing the policies and interventions for women empowerment. The findings of the paper will be helpful in setting directions for research in this domain.Originality/valueThe paper is an original contribution as it has reviewed literature and used VOSviewer. Along with the review, it has supported the findings from qualitative observations from the field.

This study aims to analyze BMT's role in poor women's economic empowerment in the Cianjur Regency. This research is a qualitative descriptive study using economic and sociological approaches. This research's data sources are primary data obtained from BMT and interviews and secondary data from library research. Furthermore, the data collection method is carried out by observation, interviews, and documentation for further analysis by reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that BMT played a role in empowering the economy of women. Their income increases so that they can meet their daily needs and become more independent. Besides, they became smarter in managing finances and began to be actively involved in household decision making. Empowerment of women can improve women's welfare and independence in various aspects of life, particularly the economy. Applying the function of empowering women in microfinance institutions such as BMT is the right solution to improve the economy of the community, especially women

Gender-Based Violence and Access to Education

Gender based violence (GBV) consequences on women economic empowerment within Kenya are immensely widespread. Nakuru East Sub County, in particular has reported many cases of GBV. The aim of this study was to examine effects of gender-based violence on the women access to education. This investigation was guided by Ecological theory and a descriptive survey design was adopted in this study. Using a questionnaire, focus group discussions (FGDs) and key informant interviews, the results are based on achieved response of a group of 40 women, 2 chiefs and 2 officers in charge of children protection unit and 3 CSOs Staff. Study findings indicate that there was notable impact of GBV on women access to education in Nakuru East. Cases of school dropout as a result of teenage pregnancies, Early marriage, child labour, and giving preference to boys in education were top on the findings. Empowerment of women reduces the unequal power relationship between women and men which has been identified as the root cause of GBV.

Information Literacy and Women Empowerment for National Development: The Role of First Ladies in Nigeria

Information literacy, the ability to access and utilize essential information empower women’s participation in national development and helps them to gain control over their lives. It is key to development and it promotes social inclusion by empowering people to seek and use the information to achieve their goals. It helps women to utilize available resources at their disposal to the best of their ability to achieve optimum results. Women economic empowerment and information literacy cannot be assessed without considering the economic inequality in Nigeria. Women empowerment is the means of reducing women's vulnerability and dependency in all areas of life. Women in Nigeria especially in the rural areas have been neglected, subjected and exposed to poverty with no means of supporting themselves. This paper looks at how information literacy and empowerment can raise the standard of living of women and the role and impact first ladies have played in empowering these women and going forward, how information literacy and women empowerment programmes can be better structured and sustained to further improve their living conditions and the socio-economic development of the nation.

Evaluation of Self-Help Groups in Promoting Women Socio-Economic Empowerment in Kibra Sub-County, Nairobi County, Kenya

Women play a crucial role in developing the economy, but their contribution has been negatively affected by limited financial services access. The study investigated the role of self-help groups (SHGs) in promoting women's economic empowerment in Kibra, Nairobi County, Kenya. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The sample size was 108 SHGs as respondents. The study utilized primary means of data collection by using questionnaires, key informant interviews (KIIs) and focused group discussions (FGDs). The findings showed that SHGs utilize group savings to expand credit access to vulnerable women in the sub-county. Leadership experience in SGHs has changed women's ability to make major decisions in their lives and improve confidence. SHGs have positively boosted the economy by empowering women and diversifying income sources. The study recommends periodical training on leadership and income-generating activities. The government needs to offer market and build infrastructure for products produced by groups' projects and provide subsidized loans to SHGs. Great emphasis should be put on women education and creating awareness while encouraging young women to join SHGs to start earning their incomes at early ages and making savings for their projects.

Farming groups and empowerment of women smallholder farmers

ABSTRACT Discrimination and subordination of women have contributed to lower economic and social development levels for women, especially in developing countries. Empowerment of women enables them to gain control of their lives by increasing their participation in the economy and all levels of decision making. This study used mixed method research to examine the social and economic empowerment of women experienced in farming groups. The groups have contributed to women’s empowerment. However, the individual abilities of women are vital for empowerment to occur among members. Development support organisations should focus on improving women’s capabilities alongside the mobilisation of group establishment.

Existency of Women Leadership at Village Level and Its Orientation against Gender Justice (Case Studies in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar)

Women's leadership at the village level is a new thing for the people of Aceh today, because previously it was very rare. Becoming a leader at the village level known as a keuchik is not easy, they face many challenges and obstacles. Moreover, in initiating and running pro-women programs. However, the community has been familiar with programs that are general in nature, not looking at gender sensitive. Village development, for example, is more focused on physical construction in the form of buildings, open non-physical development such as increasing the number of women who get education, support for women's economic empowerment and also concern for increasing health awareness for women.

The Role of Radio in Fostering Economic Empowerment of Rural Women in Bogije Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos

This research sheds light on radio’s role in advancing women economic empowerment in Bogije – a rural semi-urban settlement in the outskirt of Lagos Island. Deploying qualitative approaches to research often known as interviews, the research concludes that although observable efforts have been invested in spotlighting most issues around female empowerment – precisely economic empowerment through media formats such as drama, sensitization and orientation on government aids and skills acquisition programmes, talk shows, interviews with government personnels, coverage of NGO activities on this issue, primarily, much is yet to be done about radio’s reach and other deep rooted issues which limits radio’s ability to properly deliver on its key responsibilities. The paper arrives at a position which presents a need to deal with the root causes limiting radio’s ability to function properly on this subject of focus. It further sheds light on the need for women’s economic empowerment to be taken more seriously as is done on health empowerment. It stretches across a need to monitor how women are discussed on air as they are sometimes presented as needy, helpless and desperate humans in need of rescue and empowerment which further dampens feminist goals and aims of proper female representation and empowerment. Ultimately, the paper acknowledges radio’s efforts at playing a vital role in female’s economic empowerment in Bogije while it calls for loopholes to be sealed and more efforts invested as much is yet to be done in achieving women’s economic empowerment in Bogije, Ibeju Lekki, Lagos.
