ABSTRACT This article examines the character arcs of three women characters in Akhtaruzzaman Elias’ novel Khwabnama. As Kulsum, Hamida, and Phuljaan navigate devastating personal events and labor to resuscitate or somehow keep alive fraying relationships, the sheer effort required to sustain the domestic alive while navigating potential entrapment spills over in more-than-real ways to shape the world beyond the home in Khwabnama. Potential descent into despair and madness, multiple forms of irreparable loss, alongside desire and exhaustion, become central nodes through which women mediate the novel’s broad sweep of events. Drawing on the stories of Khwabnama’s women, I argue that the more-than-real world of Khwabnama is mediated through, and secured by, the fraught webs of domesticity and everyday life.
