Support for women?

Is there any reason, other than the dictates of fashion, behind the decision of the Institute to embrace the cause of 'Women in physics'? Anyone capable of reading the Women's page of The Guardian without actually moving his lips could have predicted what would happen as soon as it decided to pander to the Wimmin's Syndrome.

Saturday 3 October 1987 saw about 60 women, a dozen children and one man take over Institute Headquarters for the first 'Women in physics' meeting. A recent survey (see Physics Bulletin November 1986 pp454–5) had shown that many women members felt isolated and i wanted to meet and communicate with other women interested in physics – the day was arranged to meet that need.

I welcome the report on the Women in physics survey (D Byrne and B Madge Physics Bulletin November 1986 pp454–5). I, too, had independently reached some of the same conclusions.

Early in 1986, the Women in Physics Subcommittee of the Education and Careers Committee carried out a survey of the female members of The Institute of Physics. The aims were to ascertain the education and professional backgrounds of female members, their needs, problems and views on Institute activities.

Women in physics: unnecessary, injurious and out of place?

The subtitle for this article is taken from a Strindberg essay written at the end of the 19th century opposing the appointment of the mathematician, Sonia Kovalevsky, to a professorship at the University of Stockholm, in which he attempts to prove “as decidedly as that two and two make four, what a monstrosity is a woman who is a professor of mathematics, and how unnecessary, injurious and out of place she is”. It is certainly a much more extreme statement than anything likely to be voiced publicly today but it does vividly and tersely encapsulate many of the opinions that have been expressed to me in much more veiled and discursive form over the last ten years. Largely because of these continuing though muted attitudes I have accepted an invitation to write this article for PHYSICS TODAY. I will very briefly sketch the history of women's participation in physics as a background to the current situation and then discuss some statistical information about women physicists in the recent past and present in the United States. It will come as no surprise that the percentage of physicists who are women is small and that their employment patterns are different from those of men. I will discuss the possible reasons for this situation. Finally, I will comment briefly on recent changes and what expectations one may have for the future.

Professor Thompson's article 'Male chauvinist physicists?' (Physics Bulletin October 1978 p450) raised some very interesting questions concerning women and physics. The main point of the article was that, over the last ten years, the ratio of men to women applying to study physics at university has increased, whereas in most other subjects this ratio has steadily decreased.

Women physicists are a rare breed, but most of us agree that we need more of them. They have many problems in common with other professional women, but some are peculiar to physics. Many would like to work part time while raising families. Some feel that the system should have a bias built in to help women get into science and stay there. Others caution against lowering our standards. How do we provide models for young girls to identify with? Is the situation different abroad? Can the federal government help? Can genuine discrimination be observed?

Encouraging women physicists

The note in the Secretary's column of the April issue of Physics Bulletin (p. 122) concerning the number of women Members of the Institute and Society inevitably leads one to ask what the Institute and Society is doing to encourage women physicists to join and to remain Members and, more importantly, what effort is being made to encourage more girls to study physics at school and to enter careers in the physical sciences and engineering. For women in permanent full time employment in the universities or in industry, the reasons for applying for Membership are the same as for their male colleagues and no special inducement need, or should, be offered.
