Gender Balance and National Development: A case of the Nigerian Society

This paper examines the importance of gender balance in relation to national development bringing to fore the implications of gender inequality and highlighting the benefits of gender mainstream in the overall good of the nation’s development. The objective of the study was to critically analyze the specific gender- laden issues responsible for the slow pace of development in the Nigerian society. The methodology adopted for this paper was the use of secondary data gathered from the University Libraries, news prints and journals. The quest for the attainment of national economic development and sustainable growth cannot be actualized without the recognition of the vital contributions of both genders. All ‘hands must be on deck’, a prerequisite for harmonious and functional drive in the desired direction of growth and development (both economic and social). The study also highlights the various dimensions women’s contribution could assume in the Nigeria’s national growth and development and proffered suggestions to ensure women gender equality in all spheres of activities in the country. The article sets forth the political and legal views of the members of the Cyril and Methodius Brotherhood regarding the gender equality of women and men. The views of T. Shevchenko, M. Kostomarov, P. Kulish are analyzed; their positive attitude towards women as equal members of society has been established. It is established that the origin of the idea of gender equality in Ukrainian legal thought, first of all, should be associated with the work of T. Shevchenko, who first drew attention to discrimination against women not only on social, national, religious, but also gender grounds. T. Shevchenko's creativity had a decisive influence on the further establishment and development of the idea of gender equality in Ukrainian legal thought. Human Rights for Women's Development in Multidimensional: A Step towards Gender Equality in Education

Women's educational human rights and gender equality is one of the burning topics nowadays. Following the gender equality framework proposed by United Nations in its Millennium Summit in 2000 declared "Gender equality and women empowerment". This present study tries to review gender equality for women in many aspects, including the major concern in this review, i.e., education and human right. After analyzing several documents in the net during the collection period, this study sees that women have achieved a lot. However, yes still they are lagging in terms of equality in education and human right. The fact showed women are far lagging and leave alone on the question of gender equality. The present paper explores and highlighted these issues as the central questions related to women's rights and also attempts to wrestle with the few challenges that faced by the women education system in India as a specific example. At last, this paper also try to highlight some strategy as to upgrade the status of women in society, ever since this study believes that Educating a woman will uplifts her life as well as the quality of the nation.

Rendahnya Komitmen Pemerintah dalam Penanganan Masalah Gender di Sri Lanka

As a developing country, Sri Lanka has problems facing other developing countries in the world. Start from the economic problems, food security and of course social and cultural. One of them is the issue of gender which has been a classic problem in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka people who still uphold their culture and customs are important factors for analyzing gender issues in the country. The tight culture and customs that are still held by the majority of Sri Lanka society, influence the stakeholders who should be the main spearhead of gender equality for women. Moreover, seeing the original culture which prioritizes men over women in various aspects, making women in Sri Lanka do not have the courage to do social breakdown for the freedom of women in their country. This also makes policy products (legislation) in Sri Lanka gender biased, because the perspectives of women who are actively involved in the legalization process in the country are very minimal. How exactly is public policy to cope with gender inequality in Sri Lanka? This paper seeks to explore how the policies of the Sri Lankan government towards the fulfillment of women's rights, which until now is still a social problem, is a fetter for women from their independence.

POLITIK PEREMPUAN BERBASIS GENDER

The increasing number of women, who concern in politics and have sensitivity and awareness about the important of social relation, economics, law, culture issues among women and men will trigger gender equality in politics. However, it is not easy as imagined due to patriarchy concept on Indonesian women which have less access to gain high achievement in public sectors. On the other hand, the idealization of political participation of Indonesian women in political practices still not comparable to the number of Indonesian women. Therefore, women movement especially on politics, quality improvement through education, and support women to get excellent prestation in front stage (public area), it is a effective way to give opportunity, appreciation and gender equality for women. Women and HIV: Gender Inequalities of Women Contributing to HIV Pandemic around the Globe

HIV/AIDS is a global health problem affecting women around the globe. The term global health refers to the goal of improving health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide. HIV is a virus that destroys the immune system. AIDS is the last stage of the virus. During this stage, there is little to no immune system left to fight off other infections or cancers. This virus can be acquired by men, women, and children of any age. HIV is the leading cause of death among women of reproductive age. This paper is an analytical review of research and literature related to the contributing factors to the rise of HIV in women, treatment and policy development. The model: Global Model: Gender Inequalities of Women Contributing to HIV Pandemic around the Globe was used in conceptualizing gender inequality and power imbalances between men and women contributing to the incidence and prevalence of HIV of women around the globe. Global health problems such as HIV/AIDs are best addressed by collaborative efforts and solutions that involve more than one country. More research is needed collaboratively on for the treatment of women around the globe. Collaborative efforts are needed for empowerment, improving treatment and educating women on HIV/AIDS Policy development is needed in changing laws to promote gender equality for women around the globe.

A Perspective on Women Gender Equality in Nigeria: Level, Differentials and Prediction

The major aim of this paper is to ascertain the level, differential, and prediction of gender equality in Nigeria by 2015. Knowledge accumulation and application, especially for women, have become major factors in economic development and are increasingly at the core of a country’s competitive advantage in the global economy. Secondary data from Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), Nigeria Demographic and Education Survey (NDES), Sentinel survey and National Population Commission (NPC) data were used. The result showed that over 71 percent of women had no education while 43 percent of men had no education. Furthermore, there is disparity between women and men education according to household economic status as in the poorest households, 40 percent of men are literate compared to 13 percent of women. Also, the population projection from 2009 to 2015 with 2008 as the base year was carried out. The result showed that Nigerian’s population by sex is growing exponentially at the rate of 3.04%. This increase will further hamper the realization of the third millennium development goal which is gender equality by 2015.

More fundamentally, women have been subjected to domination by men. This is as a result of persisting cultural stereotype, abuse of religious and traditional practises, patriarchal societal structures in which economic, political and social power are dominated by men and the role women have historically played as the followers of male leaders. Women Gender Equality issues has become a global core commitment because equality between men and women is just fair and right. The attainment of gender equality is not only seen as an end itself and human right issues, but as a prerequisite for the achievement of sustainable development. Socio-economic and politics holds prospect for women, gender equality on the aforementioned fronts. To respond to the challenges of gender inequalities and attendant low socioeconomic and political indicators. There is need to recognise gender issues as central to and critical to achieve women gender equality. The aim of the study was to critically analyse the specific socio-economic and political (gender issues) responsible for the continuous perpetuation of gender inequality in Nigeria. We also proffered strategies to ensure women gender equality in all spheres of activities in the country.

Development and Female Crime: A Cross-National Test of Alternative Explanations

In this report, we use INTERPOL data from 69 countries to test four alternative explanations of the relation between development and the female percentage of arrests (FP/A): gender equality, female economic marginality, opportunities for female-based consumer crimes, and formalization of social control. An analysis of both the direct and indirect effects of development was conducted to determine whether any or all of the alternative factors are mediating links between development and FP/A. The analysis revealed that the two explanations dealing with the relative social and economic status of women-gender equality and female economic marginality-were both poor predictors of FP/A. On the other hand, the other two explanations-opportunity for female-based consumer crimes and formalization of social control-were both found to be fairly good predictors of FP/A. At the end of the report, uz offer several possible explanations for these findings, with particular focus on our failure to support the gender equality-crime hypothesis.

Men and women as interest groups in the abortion debate in the United States

The abortion issue is defined here as a gender conflict of rights, and the research question is formulated within an interest group framework. Using data from a U.S. national opinion survey the merits of the formulation that opinions on abortion should reflect conflicting gender interests are explored. Although no gender polarization on abortion opinions is found, values regarding gender equality for women and conservatism for men reflect the impact of self-interest. The most powerful predictors of opposition to abortion are different for American women and men: high religiosity (for women) and low education (for men). The implications of these findings for a gender-equalitarian future are discussed. While support for a solution based on increased education is noncontroversial, sacrificing religiosity to gender equality is a more problematic proposition.
