Non-line of sight analysis for vehicular visible light communication system: Impact of artificial light source and weather conditions

Visible light communication is seen as a crucial technology within optical wireless communication systems. The technology of vehicular visible light communication holds significant importance in the context of connected vehicles. This technology can serve as a supplementary solution to vehicular systems that are based on radio frequency. In this paper, the authors conduct an analysis of the performance of both line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight vehicle-to-vehicle visible light communication systems under the effect of artificial light source and weather conditions, including clear, hazy, and foggy weather. A practical vehicular laser diode, a street lamp, and an avalanche photodiode are used to design the proposed system model. Performance enhancement for the proposed system is achieved using an optical amplifier at the receiving end. An artificial light source of light-emitting diode Corn-type is used to represent an ambient artificial light source. Different metrics such as quality factor and bit error rate are used to assess the system performance of the non-line-of-sight-vehicular communication system. The proposed line-of-sight model achieves a data rate of 25 Gbps, supporting a distance of 80 m under clear sky and hazy atmospheric conditions. For foggy weather, an attainable link distance of 70 m is achieved. The achieved results emphasize the suitability of the suggested models for vehicular applications in real world environment.

Performance evaluation and comparative research of underwater wireless optical communication system by using different structured beams

Structured beams have attracted increasing interest in free-space and fiber-based optical communications. Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) is becoming a prospective technique in marine exploration. We investigated UWOC performance using different representative structured beams. The transmission performances of the Gaussian, Bessel–Gaussian (BG), Ince–Gaussian (IG), and radially polarized Gaussian (RPG) beams were experimentally demonstrated and evaluated in underwater channels subjected to thermal gradient. The experimental results show that the BG, IG, and RPG perform better against the thermal gradient. Compared with the Gaussian beams, the beam wanders of BG, IG, and RPG beams under the thermal gradient have been reduced by 56.9%, 8.2%, and 59%, the scintillation indices have been decreased by 12.8%, 17.3%, and 28.9%, and the BER performance of the BG, IG, and RPG beams have been improved by ∼5.5, ∼3.7, and ∼5.2dB at the forward error correction threshold (FEC threshold). Based on the above results, the RPG beam is a more promising light source for UWOC. The experimental results provide a promising beam choice for UWOC.

Rayleigh length extension in long-distance free-space optical communications based on lens group optimization

In the field of high-speed data transmission, wireless optical communications provide a paradigm shift from the conventional tethered connections, offering promising bandwidth and minimal latency. The cornerstone of such systems lies in their ability to precisely control the propagation of Gaussian beams, which are favored due to their inherent properties of minimal divergence and high spatial coherence over long distances. Efficient transmission hinges on the proper manipulation of these beams’ spatial characteristics, particularly the waist radius and the associated Rayleigh length, which together delineate the beam’s diffraction and spread. This manuscript methodically explores the theoretical and practical aspects of Gaussian beam focusing through lens systems, aiming to elucidate the pivotal relationship between the optimally adjusted focal parameters and the resultant augmentation of the Rayleigh length. Through rigorous diffraction integral simulations and a keen analysis of constraints posed by finite apertures, the study articulates strategies to considerably enhance the Gaussian beam’s propagation characteristics, thereby bolstering the reliability and efficacy of wireless optical communication systems.

108 m Underwater Wireless Optical Communication Using a 490 nm Blue VECSEL and an AOM.

Advanced light sources in the blue-green band are crucial for underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems. Vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VECSELs) can produce high output power and good beam quality, making them suitable for UWOC. This paper presents a 108 m distance UWOC based on a 100 mW 490 nm blue VECSEL and an acousto-optic modulator (AOM). The high-quality beam, which is near diffraction-limited, undergoes relatively small optical attenuation when using a conventional avalanche photodiode (APD) as the detector and employing 64-pulse position modulation (PPM). At the time-slot frequency of 50 MHz, the bit error rate (BER) of the UWOC was 2.7 × 10-5. This is the first reported AOM-based UWOC system with a transmission distance over 100 m. The estimated maximum transmission distance may be improved to about 180 m by fully utilizing the detection accuracy of the APD according to the measured attenuation coefficient of the blue VECSEL used. This type of UWOC system, composed of a high-beam-quality light source and a conventional detector, make it more closely suited to practical applications.

Experimental investigation on backscattering interference cancellation for full-duplex UOWC based on time-reversal preprocessing

A co-frequency and full-duplex (FD) underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) system has the potential to significantly enhance spectral efficiency, reduce complexity, and further facilitate UOWC networking. However, the inevitable performance degradation due to self-interference introduced by backscattering presents a significant challenge. In this paper, we first experimentally explore the inherent characteristics of the underwater backscattering channel. Subsequently, we propose a digital-domain backscattering interference cancellation (BIC) algorithm for FD-UOWC systems, incorporating a time-reversal preprocessing. We then experimentally investigate the communication performance of an FD-UOWC system to verify the feasibility of the proposed BIC algorithm under different channel conditions. The experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, yielding substantial enhancements in bit error rate performance across diverse scenarios.

Exploiting Fine-grained Dimming with Improved LiFi Throughput

Optical wireless communication (OWC) shows great potential due to its broad spectrum and the exceptional intensity switching speed of LEDs. Under poor conditions, most OWC systems switch from complex and more error prone high-order modulation schemes to more robust On-Off Keying (OOK) modulation defined in the IEEE OWC standard. This paper presents LiFOD, a high-speed indoor OOK-based OWC system with fine-grained dimming support. While ensuring fine-grained dimming, LiFOD remarkably achieves robust communication at up to 400 Kbps at a distance of 6 meters. This is the first time that the data rate has improved via OWC dimming in comparison to the previous approaches that consider trading off dimming and communication. LiFOD makes two key technical contributions. First, LiFOD utilizes Compensation Symbols (CS) as a reliable side-channel to represent bit patterns dynamically and improve throughput. We firstly design greedy-based bit pattern mining. Then we propose 2D feature enhancement via YOLO model for real-time bit pattern mining. Second, LiFOD synchronously redesigns optical symbols and CS relocation schemes for fine-grained dimming and robust decoding. Experiments on low-cost Beaglebone prototypes with commercial LED lamps and the photodiode (PD) demonstrate that LiFOD significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art system with 2.1× throughput on the SIGCOMM17 data-trace.

High-Efficiency 4 × 4 × 10 Gbps Orbital Angular Momentum Modes Incorporated into Satellite–Ground–Underwater Optical Wireless System under Diverse Turbulences

With their unique capability to deal with a considerable geographic area, satellite–ground–underwater optical wireless communication (OWC) systems are an appealing alternative to meet the ever-increasing demand for end-to-end broadband services. Using four different Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) modes, an orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing method was developed to enhance the spectral efficiency and system capacity of the satellite–ground–underwater OWC system. At an aggregate throughput of 160 Gbps, LG[0,0], LG[0,2], LG[0,4], and LG[0,8] were realized. Various atmospheric conditions, water types, and scintillation effects were used to evaluate the performance of two separate OWC links for satellite-to-ground and ground-to-underwater communication. A maximum OWC range of 21,500–30,000 km has been obtained under weak-to-strong turbulence for satellite-to-ground scenarios, and a range of 12–27 m underwater for ground-to-underwater scenarios under various scintillation effects. At LG[0,0], in pure sea, the maximum gain is −75.02 dB, the noise figure is 75.02 dB, the output signal is −78.32 dBm, and the signal-to-noise ratio is 21.67 dB. In comparison with other works in the literature, this system shows a superior performance.

Enhancing the performance of LiFi communication with OSTBC, QAM, and OFDM: High-capacity, low-complexity transceiver design

Light fidelity (LiFi) is one of the most promising areas within wireless optical communication system. It provides many benefits, including high capacity, improved security and enhanced cost-effectiveness. However, there is still challenges which are link blockages, attenuation, interference and bandwidth restriction of modulation techniques. Orthogonal space–time block coding (OSTBC) offers a suitable solution to address link blockage by providing an alternative communication channel between the transmitter and the receiver. OSTBC has more tolerate to the practical channel impact limitation such as attenuation and interference that may occur in overlapping regions. In addition, the use of the OSTBC technique enhances the system’s ability to transfer data as the transmission rate is duplicated by the number of transmitters and receivers. This paper proposes the utilisation of a LiFi transceiver-based OSTBC that employs quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) in conjunction with orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). Co-simulation tools have been done by integrated Matlab with Optisystem, were used in the design of LiFi transceiver with all assumption required. The findings reveal the capability of LiFi transceiver of transmitting rate up to 15 Gbps with maintaining a satisfactory bit error rate (BER) of 10−4 over a link range of 200 m evenin the presence of realistic channel effects. Moreover, the LiFi transceiver’s structure used does not incorporate optical amplifier components, resulting in reduced computational complexity compared to conventional LiFi transceivers. The proposed system proved its progress over the previous work under the influence of the same input effects.

Fast-beam-switching optical phased array for moving objects in wireless optical communication networks.

For optical wireless communication systems, mechanical beam steering struggles to timely switch between multiple users or search for moving users. Here we demonstrate a fast-beam-switching optical phased array (OPA) for agile wireless communication networks. For point-to-multi-point (P2MP) scenarios, a setup of OPA-based fast beam switching between two aligned receivers was developed. A loss-free image transmission experiment was used to demonstrate the stability of switching. Furthermore, we have developed an approach to using the fast-switching OPA to follow the trajectory of moving objects so as to help enable agile random-access switching between moving objects. These results could help offer fast switching and reconfiguration for indoor wireless optical communications.

Experimental saturation characteristics of the PMT and adaptive compensation algorithm for OWC

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) utilizes numerous sub-carriers to achieve high transmission data rates. The frequency selectivity of the channel becomes a crucial factor influencing the communication performance of OFDM-based systems. In optical wireless communication (OWC) systems, the photomultiplier tube (PMT) may experience saturation when the incident optical power approaches its saturation threshold. This paper, for the first time, characterizes the saturation levels of a high-speed PMT based on the measured amplitude in the time domain and the output response of the PMT in the frequency domain. Additionally, an adaptive optical saturation compensation algorithm, leveraging an electronically controlled variable optical attenuator, is proposed to realize a reliable OWC system. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed saturation compensation method achieves a higher tolerance to large dynamic signal and background radiation compared with that without compensation, while maintaining a satisfactory bit error rate.

Half-spectrum OFDM to quadruple the spectral efficiency of underwater wireless optical communication with digital power division multiplexing.

Improving the spectrum efficiency (SE) is an effective method to further enhance the data rate of bandwidth-limited underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems. Non-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (NOFDM) with a compression factor of 0.5 can save half of the bandwidth without introducing any inter-carrier-interference (ICI) only if the total number of subcarriers is large enough, and we termed it as half-spectrum OFDM (HS-OFDM). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported work on a closed-form HS-OFDM signal in the discrete domain from the perspective of a correlation matrix. Due to the special mathematical property, no extra complex decoding algorithm is required at the HS-OFDM receiver, making it as simple as the conventional OFDM receiver. Compared with traditional OFDM, HS-OFDM can realize the same data rate, but with a larger signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) margin. To fully use the SNR resource of the communication system, we further propose a digital power division multiplexed HS-OFDM (DPDM-HS-OFDM) scheme to quadruple the SE of conventional OFDM for the bandwidth-starved UWOCs. The experimental results show that HS-OFDM can improve the receiver sensitivity by around 4dB as opposed to conventional 4QAM-OFDM with the same data rate and SE. With the help of the DPDM-HS-OFDM scheme, the data rate of multi-user UWOC can reach up to 4.5Gbps under the hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) limit of a bit error rate (BER) of 3.8×10-3. Although there is some performance degradation in comparison with single-user HS-OFDM, the BER performance of multi-user DPDM-HS-OFDM is still superior to that of conventional single-user 4QAM-OFDM. Both single-user HS-OFDM and multi-user DPDM-HS-OFDM successfully achieve 2Gbps/75m data transmission, indicating that the DPDM-HS-OFDM scheme is of great importance in bandwidth-limited UWOC systems and has guiding significance to underwater wireless optical multiple access.

Simple Moment Generating Function Optimisation Technique to Design Optimum Electronic Filter for Underwater Wireless Optical Communication Receiver

This paper introduces a new simple moment-generating function (MGF) design modelling method to conclude an optimum filter to maximize the Q-factor and increase the link communication span. This approach mitigates the pulse temporal dispersion, particularly the underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems. Hence, some form of equalizing filter design is highly desirable. The model solution environment includes a Double Gamma Function (DGF) water channel impulse response, intersymbol interference (ISI), stochastic Poisson process, and additive Gaussian thermal noise (AGTN). The optimal filters exhibit temporal profiles comparable to those derived by published works based on complex Chernoff Bound (CB) and Modified Chernoff Bound (MCB) methods. The results show the impact of the optimum filter at a signal level and optical receiver level utilizing Eye-Diagrams and BER vs. Q-Factor, respectively. The computation involves four different UWOC propagation channel models for Coastal and Harbor waters. One of the main conclusions indicates that the optimum filter manages the temporal dispersion due to the ISI impairment correctly. Also, the proposed optimum filter reduces eye-opening and the corresponding Q-Factor by less than 15% for a five-times increase in pulse width for the same transmitted optical power level.

The overview of the principles of organizing underwater wireless optical communication is presented in the paper. The basic features of the optical communication system design with the usage of laser and LED emitters working in the visible range, as well as using various types of modulation, are considered. A comparative review of the developments of underwater wireless optical communication systems, operating at distances up to one hundred meters and with data transfer rates up to tens of Gbit/s, is presented. In addition, a comparative review of design of underwater optical modems is considered. It is shown, that the further prospect of their development is the combination of various methods of underwater wireless communication, including the use of MIMO technology.

Digital simulation of underwater turbulence channel based on the Monte Carlo method

Our method, using Nikishov’s spectral model, assesses weak turbulence disturbance in underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems. It computes scintillation indices and generates turbulence coefficients. It simulates optical signals at the detector, determining the bit error rate (BER) via decision demodulation. Analysis reveals that the slope of the relationship curve between the receiving antenna aperture and the scintillation index is maximized to 0.0377 when the receiving antenna aperture is 18 mm. For an average BER of 1E-6, required average signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) are 9.84, 10.21 and 13.01 dB. Comparisons reveal <4% relative error and 0.071% root-mean-square error in average BER vs. average SNR curves, validating time-domain semi-physical UWOC simulations.

Performance enhancement of RIS-assisted MRR-UOWC systems using the spectral-power-efficient [formula omitted]QAM-MPPM

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs), proposed as innovative units, possess the potential to establish reliable connections in Underwater Optical Wireless Communication (UOWC) systems, where direct transmission (DT) experiences significant weakening due to dynamic channel conditions. In this paper, we examine the performance of a UOWC system consisting of an RIS and a modulating retroreflector (MRR), referred to as the RIS-assisted MRR-UOWC system. The channel is affected by a combination of path loss, gamma–gamma (G–G) turbulence, and pointing error (PE). The considered system employs the spectral-power-efficient L-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation Multi-Pulse Pulse-Position Modulation (LQAM-MPPM) technique. For our system performance measures, we present upper-bound (UB) and approximate UB expressions for the average bit-error rate (BER) of LQAM-MPPM signals. These expressions are used to analyze the system’s performance. Performance metrics are established by deriving the Probability Density Function (PDF), Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF), and Moment-Generating Function (MGF) for the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), resulting from the sum of products of independent but not identically distributed (i.ni.d) channel coefficients. The results of our study indicate that the LQAM-MPPM scheme surpasses traditional schemes.
