DL Willy Sansen Visits SSCS Poland Chapter [Chapters

The IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) Poland Chapter organized a short course given by SSCS Distinguished Lecturer (DL) Prof. Willy Sansen. The two-day course, Selected Aspects in Analog Microelectronics Design, was held 5-6 October 2017 at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow, Poland. The event was organized under the auspices of the dean of the faculty and attracted a large number of attendees, including IC designers from different companies, university researchers, and Ph.D. and M.Sc. students. The event is briefly described.

When, during ISSCC 2013 in San Francisco, I was told by Willy Sansen that I was going to be featured on the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Magazine, I was both surprised and grateful for such an honor. My first thought was ?what interesting things can I say about myself?? I was just a teacher and a designer and my most important claim was being the father of three beautiful children, the husband of a loving wife and the friend of many caring people.

It is an honor and pleasure to write these reflections about my colleague, mentor, and friend, Prof. Willy Sansen.

The Research of Prof. Willy Sansen: An Overview

The author discusses his relationship with Willy Sansen, whom he first met in 1969 when Sansen came to the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) Department of the University of California, Berkeley, as a new Ph.D. candidate. The author supervised his Ph.D. research in the field of analog integrated circuit (IC) design for the next three years and got to know him well. Sansen arrived at Berkeley at an exciting time in the development of ICs. Silicon ICs were rapidly taking over commercial digital applications and were making major inroads in the analog circuits field as well. Sansen quickly realized that to make progress on both the theoretical analysis and computer simulation of these circuits, he would need to simultaneously tackle the problem of device characterization for IC processes. The state of the art in device modeling at the time was quite crude, particularly with regard to the parasitic elements associated with bipolar transistors, the dominant active devices then in widespread use. Sansen���s research on this topic was described in a 1972 paper that has been widely referenced over the years. He then applied this modeling expertise to the characterization of signal distortion in bipolar transistor VGAs. He combined closed-form analytical expressions with computer simulation that, for the first time, enabled circuit designers to quickly predict the nonlinear behavior of this important class of circuits. This work then led to the realization of methods of maximizing the dynamic range of VGAs. This research required inclusion of VGA device electrical noise processes in the analysis and explained for the first time a number of aspects of VGA noise performance that had been observed empirically but were not well understood. New circuit design ideas such as bleed-current injection to the common-emitter points of the main differential pairs were introduced, and these techniques are being used today in a wide range of circuit applications in a number of different IC technologies at frequencies as high as 75 GHz.

Lighting the Way

In this article we present our view of the impact that Prof. Willy Sansen had during his four-decade-long career of teaching and research. Striving for excellence in both of these areas was key in his work. First we describe the general thread running through Sansen's research work. In one sentence: he developed a continuum extending from circuit-level models created by means of thorough analysis of elementary circuit elements to the fundamental analog building blocks, like operational amplifiers and transconductance amplifiers, that make up complex analog-to-digital converters, filters, and so on.

Eight Society Members Congratulated at ISSCC for Elevation to IEEE Fellow Grade

During the ISSCC awards program, President Willy Sansen congratulated Kenji Anami, Patrick Gelsinger, Rakesh Kumar, Bram Nauta, Jyuo-Min Shyu, Stewart Taylor, C. K. Wang, and Hoi-Jun Yoo on their selection for the IEEE Fellow Class of 2008. A total of 295 IEEE Senior Members were elevated to Fellow Grade effective 1 January 2008.

Sansen and Matsuzawa Visit National Taiwan University, Meeting and Seminars in April Organized by SSCS-Taipei Chapter

SSCS President Willy Sansen and AdCom member Akira Matsuzawa met with National Taiwan University President Prof. Si-Chen on 24 April, 2008. In a lecture there, Sansen termed the continuing advancement of microelectronics technologies "More Moore," and labeled the emerging trend toward integrated sensor and MEMS applications "More Than Moore." Prof. Matsuzawa spoke on the history and future of high-speed ADC's.

Abidi Receives IEEE Pederson Award at ISSCC 2008

SSCS President Willy Sansen presented the IEEE Donald O. Pederson Award in Solid-State Circuits to Asad A. Abidi at the ISSCC Plenary Session on 4 February. Quoting an evaluator, he lauded Dr. Abidi as "someone who has insight into technical problems that baffle others -- a visionary who often heralds activities in totally new research areas."
