Human Health Risk Assessment of Chlorinated Hydrocarbons in Groundwater Based on Multi-Pathway Analysis.

The rapid development of the global chemical industry has led to widespread groundwater contamination, with frequent pollution incidents posing severe threats to water safety. However, there has been insufficient assessment of the health risks posed by chlorinated hydrocarbon contamination in groundwater around chemical industrial parks. This study evaluates the chlorinated hydrocarbon contamination in groundwater at a chemical park and conducts a multi-pathway health risk assessment, identifying the key risk pollutants. In addition, sensitivity analysis of the primary exposure pathways was performed using the Monte Carlo method. The results indicate severe exceedance of pollutant concentrations with widespread diffusion. Carcinogenic risks were mainly driven by vinyl chloride, whose oral cancer slope factor was significantly higher than that of other substances, while non-carcinogenic risks were dominated by trichloro-ethylene, which had the lowest reference dose. Both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks through the drinking water pathway accounted for approximately 90% of the total risk, whereas the risk contribution from dermal contact was negligible. Although boiling water can partially reduce the risks, its effect on high-concentration pollutants is limited. Additionally, sensitivity analysis showed that pollutant concentration was the primary influencing factor for risk values, followed by exposure duration. The findings of this study provide a scientific basis for effectively formulating pollution control measures and ensuring the drinking water safety of nearby residents.

Mobility and persistence of pesticides and emerging contaminants in age-dated and redox-classified groundwater under a range of land use types

Understanding groundwater contamination patterns is hampered by the heterogeneous groundwater age and redox status over the depth range typically sampled for identifying pesticides and emerging contaminants threats. This study explores depth patterns of groundwater age and redox status across various land use types, unraveling spatial and temporal trends of pesticides and emerging contaminants using data from groundwater quality monitoring in the south of the Netherlands. The Netherlands is an ideal testing ground due to its high population density and widespread groundwater contamination from multiple sources. 146 multi-level observation wells were age-dated using 3H/3He, and contaminant concentrations were analyzed based on recharge year, land use type, and redox conditions, mitigating uncertainties from spatial and depth-dependent variations in both groundwater age and redox status. Redox-recharge year diagrams were developed to visually evaluate contaminant patterns in relation to these factors and to assess concentration patterns in relation to contamination history. Most detections of pesticides, metabolites, and emerging contaminants occurred in the youngest recharge periods (2000–2010 and 2010–2020) and in agricultural areas. However, certain contaminants, including BAM, desphenyl-chloridazon, short-chain PFCAs, PFOA, and EDTA, were consistently found in older water and Fe- or SO4-reduced conditions, indicating their mobility and persistence in the regional groundwater system. Comparing the presence of contaminants in specific redox classes and recharge periods with known application or leaching history provides insights into retardation (e.g., PFOS) and degradation (e.g., 2-hydroxy-atrazine, benzotriazole), explaining lower detection frequencies in earlier recharge periods. Identifying recharge years from age-dated groundwater helps relate contaminants to farmland application or river water recharge periods, revealing leaching history and contamination origins. The presented framework has the potential to enhance the interpretation of large groundwater datasets from dedicated, short-screened observation wells, such as those from the Danish GRUMO network, the Dutch monitoring networks, and parts of the US National Water Quality Program.

Integrated Geospatial and Geostatistical Multi-Criteria Evaluation of Urban Groundwater Quality Using Water Quality Indices

Groundwater contamination poses a severe public health risk in Lahore, Pakistan’s second-largest city, where over-exploited aquifers are the primary municipal and domestic water supply source. This study presents the first comprehensive district-wide assessment of groundwater quality across Lahore using an innovative integrated approach combining geographic information systems (GIS), multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA), and water quality indexing techniques. The core objectives were to map the spatial distributions of critical pollutants like arsenic, model their impacts on overall potability, and evaluate targeted remediation scenarios. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) methodology was applied to derive weights for the relative importance of diverse water quality parameters based on expert judgments. Arsenic received the highest priority weight (0.28), followed by total dissolved solids (0.22) and hardness (0.15), reflecting their significance as health hazards. Weighted overlay analysis in GIS delineated localized quality hotspots, unveiling severely degraded areas with very poor index values (>150) in urban industrial zones like Lahore Cantt, Model Town, and parts of Lahore City. This corroborates reports of unregulated industrial effluent discharges contributing to aquifer pollution. Prospective improvement scenarios projected that reducing heavy metals like arsenic by 30% could enhance quality indices by up to 20.71% in critically degraded localities like Shalimar. Simulating advanced multi-barrier water treatment processes showcased an over 95% potential reduction in arsenic levels, indicating the requirement for deploying advanced oxidation and filtration infrastructure aligned with local contaminant profiles. The integrated decision support tool enables the visualization of complex contamination patterns, evaluation of remediation options, and prioritizing risk-mitigation investments based on the spatial distribution of hazard exposures. This framework equips urban planners and utilities with critical insights for developing targeted groundwater quality restoration policies through strategic interventions encompassing treatment facilities, drainage infrastructure improvements, and pollutant discharge regulations. Its replicability across other regions allows for tackling widespread groundwater contamination challenges through robust data synthesis and quantitative scenario modeling capabilities.

Adapting to PFAS contamination of private drinking water wells near a PFAS production facility in the US Atlantic Coastal Plain of North Carolina.

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widespread groundwater contaminants and are present in over 7000 drinking water wells near a North Carolina (NC) PFAS plant (Chemours). To understand options available to affected residents, we used new and previously existing water quality data to investigate deeper aquifers as alternate drinking water supplies and compared the regulatory responses near Chemours and three other PFAS production facilities with nearby contaminated wells. Data from >100 wells show that GenX concentrations decrease with increasing depth through the four aquifers in the study area: surficial, Black Creek, Upper Cape Fear, and bedrock. This illustrates the extent of vertical PFAS penetration through the aquifer sequence following roughly 40 years of atmospheric emissions. Detailed data on 143 water quality parameters in nine deep wells (two Upper Cape Fear, seven bedrock) revealed only eight exceedances of drinking water standards (one each for arsenic, perfluorooctanoic acid [PFOA], iron, chloride, and gross alpha, and three for manganese) and nine exceedances of health advisories (all for sodium). Regulatory responses to PFAS contamination of wells in four states included mention of deeper wells as an alternate water source only for nonresidential users in NC and residential users in Vermont. The bedrock aquifer is currently used by some residents and may be a viable alternative to shallower groundwater, though arsenic treatment may be beneficial at some deep wells and long-term sustainability of the aquifer should be evaluated. PRACTITIONER POINTS: GenX concentrations decreased with increasing depth in four aquifers near a PFAS plant. A few exceedances of drinking water standards and health advisories were found in deep bedrock wells. New bedrock wells could be part of the response to PFAS issues in shallower wells. In the long term, deep bedrock wells might be a less expensive option for some residents.

Predicting Abiotic TCE Transformation Rate Constants—A Bayesian Hierarchical Approach

AbstractFe(II) minerals can mediate the abiotic reduction of trichloroethylene (TCE), a widespread groundwater contaminant. If reaction rates are sufficiently fast for natural attenuation, the process holds potential for mitigating TCE pollution in groundwater. To assess the variability of abiotic TCE reduction rate constants, we collected pseudo‐first‐order rate constants for natural sediments and rocks from the literature, as well as intrinsic (surface‐area‐normalized) rate constants of individual minerals. Using a Bayesian hierarchical modeling approach, we were able to differentiate the contributions of natural variability and experimental error to the total variance. Applying the model, we also predicted rate constants at new sites, revealing a considerable uncertainty of several orders of magnitude. We investigated whether incorporating additional information about sediment composition could reduce this uncertainty. We tested two sets of predictors: reactive mineral content (measured by X‐ray diffraction) combined with surface areas and intrinsic rate constants, or the extractable Fe(II) content. Knowledge of the mineral composition only marginally reduced the uncertainty of predicted rate constants. We attribute the low information gain to the inability to measure the (reactive) surface areas of individual minerals in sediments or rocks, which are subject to environmental factors like aqueous geochemistry and redox potential. In contrast, knowing the Fe(II) content reduced the uncertainty about the first‐order rate constant by nearly two orders of magnitude, because the relationship between Fe(II) content and rate constants is approximately log–log‐linear. We demonstrate how our approach provides estimates for the range of cleanup times for a simple example of diffusion‐controlled transport in a contaminated aquitard.

Hydrogeochemical characteristics of groundwater contamination in Guwahati city, Assam, India: Tracing the elemental Threads

Groundwater serves as an important resource for drinking and agriculture in many countries, including India. Assessing the quality of groundwater is essential for understanding its chemical characteristics and suitability for consumption. This study aims to explore the factors affecting the hydrogeochemical changes in groundwater within Guwahati City, Assam, India. Groundwater samples were collected and analyzed for major and trace elements, as well as anion concentrations. Concentrations of As, Al, Ba, Cu, F−, Fe, Mn, and Pb exceeded the permissible limits set by both World Health Organization (WHO) and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), indicating serious health concerns for the local inhabitants. The distribution pattern of trace elements exceeding the guideline values is intricate, suggesting widespread contamination of groundwater throughout the study area. The Heavy Metal Pollution Index (HPI) and Water Quality Index (WQI) revealed that, except for the central zone, groundwater across the entire study area requires intervention. Piper plot illustrated that the groundwater is predominantly of Ca–HCO3 type, indicating the dominance of alkaline earth and weak acids. Groundwater hydrogeochemistry is mainly controlled by rock-water interaction and evolves through silicate weathering, carbonate weathering, and cation exchange processes. Multivariate statistical analysis identified distinct groups of groundwater based on chemical characteristics, emphasizing the role of both natural processes and anthropogenic activities in influencing groundwater quality. Regular monitoring, management, and intervention of groundwater sources throughout the study area are crucial for long-term use. The findings of this study will assist stakeholders, regulators, and policymakers in formulating strategies for the sustainable use of groundwater.

Improving conventional household greensand treatment for efficient Mn(II) removal from drinking water

Geogenic contaminants pose a global threat to ensuring access to safe drinking water. Manganese (Mn) is a naturally-occurring redox-active element which in its reduced form, Mn(II), is a widespread groundwater contaminant. Prolonged consumption of water containing high levels of Mn has been linked to adverse effects on memory, attention, motor skills, and nervous system function, particularly in vulnerable groups including pregnant individuals and young children. In addition, Mn can lead to aesthetic issues such as altered taste, clogging, and damage to plumbing systems. While Mn has historically been regulated as an aesthetic concern, a mounting body of evidence linking health issues to Mn exposure through drinking water has heightened the challenges of using groundwater to meet drinking water needs. Recently, Health Canada established a health guideline which set a maximum acceptable concentration for total Mn in drinking water of 120 μg/L. Greensand (GS) filters are commonly used in conventional drinking water treatment systems for Mn(II) removal due to their cost-effectiveness and high exchange capacity. However, under certain conditions conventional GS systems may have a low Mn(II) removal efficiency (Galangashi et al. 2021) and encounter challenges related to Mn leaching (Outram et al. 2018), resulting in failure to meet health-related standards. Furthermore, GS filters typically undergo regeneration using potassium permanganate (KMnO4), a mild oxidant that results in the release of additional Mn waste byproducts during the regeneration of the filter. Recent research suggests that Mn-containing materials can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) that facilitate contaminant degradation. This study aims to investigate whether PMS may be used to improve greensand treatment systems and enhance Mn(II) removal from drinking water. Batch experiments were performed to test the Mn(II) removal efficiency across a range of PMS concentrations (0-500 μM) and GS mass (0.1-3 g). Aqueous Mn concentrations were measured over time using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Solid-phase reaction products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The mechanisms of Mn oxidation were identified by quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The activation of PMS by greensand significantly increased the removal efficiency of Mn(II) compared to the conventional method (e.g., 96.83(±3.77)% at PMS = 500 µM vs. 5.77(±11.1)% at PMS = 0 µM). Our results attribute the mechanism underlying increased Mn removal in our improved treatment method to advanced oxidation processes that involve free radicals (e.g., hydroxyl radical (·OH) and sulfate radical (SO4·-)) and non-free radical pathways, with Mn oxides as the main oxidation products. This study provides a new treatment method for more efficient Mn(II) removal while simultaneously reducing Mn wastes produced during the regeneration cycle which allows for a more sustainable and holistic management of invaluable groundwater resources.

Reduced attention on restricted organochlorine pesticides, whereas still noteworthy of the impact on the deep soil and groundwater: a historical site study in southern China.

The use of hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) in pesticides has been prohibited for decades in China. Since then, there have been urbanization and transformation of the functional areas of many sites, which were formerly involved in the HCH industry. However, it is possible that, unless properly managed, these sites may still contain HCH residues in the soil and thus pose a threat to the surrounding environment and the quality of groundwater. This study aimed to characterize soil residues in a typical site that was historically involved in HCH production in southern China, by analyzing the α-HCH, β-HCH, and γ-HCH contents of the soil. The results suggested that HCHs persist in the environment and can have long-term effects. It was found that α-HCH and β-HCH were present in many samples in concentrations that were comparable or higher than those specified by China's Class 1 screening values. The distribution of residues was significantly correlated with the historical HCH production activities in the areas. The characteristic ratios of α-HCH/γ-HCH and β-HCH/(α + γ)-HCH at different soil depths were 1.4-3.7 and 0.21-1.04, respectively, which indicated the presence of significant localized residues of HCHs. The presence of HCHs in the soil suggested a downward migration, with concentrations rapidly decreasing in the upper layer soil (0-5m), but a gradual increase in the deeper soil (5-14m). HCHs were detected at depths exceeding 24m, indicating heavy penetration. The proportions of γ-HCH and β-HCH changed with increasing soil depth, which was related to their relatively volatile and stable molecular structures, respectively. The results strongly suggested that there is widespread contamination of both soil and groundwater by HCHs even after decades. The likelihood of residual HCHs in the soil should therefore be taken into full consideration during urban planning to limit risks to human and environmental health.

Comprehensive health risk analysis of heavy metal pollution using water quality indices and Monte Carlo simulation in R software

Rapid urbanization, population growth, agricultural practices, and industrial activities have led to widespread groundwater contamination. This study evaluated heavy metal contamination in residential drinking water in Shiraz, Iran (2021). The analysis involved 80 groundwater samples collected across wet and dry seasons. Water quality was comprehensively assessed using several indices, including the heavy metals evaluation index (HEI), heavy metal pollution index (HPI), contamination degree (CD), and metal index (MI). Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk assessments were conducted using deterministic and probabilistic approaches for exposed populations. In the non-carcinogenic risk assessment, the chronic daily intake (CDI), hazard quotient (HQ), and hazard index (HI) are employed. The precision of risk assessment was bolstered through the utilization of Monte Carlo simulation, executed using the R software platform. Based on the results, in both wet and dry seasons, Zinc (Zn) consistently demonstrates the highest mean concentration, followed by Manganese (Mn) and Chromium (Cr). During the wet and dry seasons, 25% and 40% of the regions exhibited high CD, respectively. According to non-carcinogenic risk assessment, Cr presents the highest CDI and HQ in children and adults, followed by Mn, As and HI values, indicating elevated risk for children. The highest carcinogenic risk was for Cr in adults, while the lowest was for Cd in children. The sensitivity analysis found that heavy metal concentration and ingestion rate significantly impact both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks. These findings provide critical insights for shaping policy and allocating resources towards effectively managing heavy metal contamination in residential drinking water.

Comparative investigation of PFAS adsorption onto activated carbon and anion exchange resins during long-term operation of a pilot treatment plant

Widespread contamination of groundwater with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has required drinking water producers to quickly adopt practical and efficacious treatments to limit human exposure and deleterious health outcomes. This pilot-scale study comparatively investigated PFAS adsorption behaviors in granular activated carbon (GAC) and two strong-base gel anion exchange resin (AER) columns operated in parallel over a 441-day period to treat contaminated groundwater dominated by short-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCA). Highly-resolved breakthrough profiles of homologous series of 2–8 CF2 PFCA and perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSA), including ultrashort-chain compounds and branched isomers, were measured to elucidate adsorption trends. Sample ports at intermediate bed depths could predict 50% breakthrough of compounds on an accelerated basis, but lower empty bed contact times led to conservative estimates of initial breakthrough. Homologous PFAS series displayed linear (GAC) and log-linear (AER) relationships between chain-length and breakthrough, independent of initial concentration. AERs generally outperformed GAC on a normalized bed volume basis, and this advantage widened with increasing PFAS chain-length. As designed, all treatments would have short full-scale service times (≤142 days for GAC; ≤61 days for AERs) before initial breakthrough of short-chain (2–4 CF2) PFCA. However, AER displayed far longer breakthrough times for PFSA compared to GAC (>3× treatment time), and breakthrough was not observed for PFSA with >4 CF2 in AERs. GAC had a finite molar adsorption capacity for total PFAS, leading to a stoichiometric replacement of short-chain PFCA by PFSA and longer-chain PFCA over time. AERs quickly reached a finite adsorption capacity for PFCA, but they showed substantially greater selectivity for PFSA whose capacity was not reached within the duration of the pilot. Breakthrough characteristics of keto- and unsaturated-PFSA, identified in the groundwater by suspect screening, were also evaluated in absence of reference standards. Modified PFAS structures (branched, keto-, unsaturated-) broke through faster than linear and unmodified perfluorinated structures with equal degrees of fluorination, and the effects were more pronounced in GAC compared to AERs. The results highlight that the design of robust PFAS treatment systems should consider facets beyond current PFAS targets including operational complexities and impacts of unregulated and unmonitored co-contaminants.

Geobacter sp. Strain IAE Dihaloeliminates 1,1,2-Trichloroethane and 1,2-Dichloroethane.

Chlorinated ethanes, including 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) and 1,1,2-trichloroethane (1,1,2-TCA), are widespread groundwater contaminants. Enrichment cultures XRDCA and XRTCA derived from river sediment dihaloeliminated 1,2-DCA to ethene and 1,1,2-TCA to vinyl chloride (VC), respectively. The XRTCA culture subsequently converted VC to ethene via hydrogenolysis. Microbial community profiling demonstrated the enrichment of Geobacter 16S rRNA gene sequences in both the XRDCA and XRTCA cultures, and Dehalococcoides mccartyi (Dhc) sequences were only detected in the ethene-producing XRTCA culture. The presence of a novel Geobacter population, designated as Geobacter sp. strain IAE, was identified by the 16S rRNA gene-targeted polymerase chain reaction and Sanger sequencing. Time-resolved population dynamics attributed the dihaloelimination activity to strain IAE, which attained the growth yields of 0.93 ± 0.06 × 107 and 1.18 ± 0.14 × 107 cells per μmol Cl- released with 1,2-DCA and 1,1,2-TCA as electron acceptors, respectively. In contrast, Dhc growth only occurred during VC-to-ethene hydrogenolysis. Our findings discover a Geobacter sp. strain capable of respiring multiple chlorinated ethanes and demonstrate the involvement of a broader diversity of organohalide-respiring bacteria in the detoxification of 1,2-DCA and 1,1,2-TCA.

In situ arsenic immobilisation for coastal aquifers using stimulated iron cycling: Lab-based viability assessment

Arsenic (As) is one of the most harmful and widespread groundwater contaminants globally. Besides the occurrence of geogenic As pollution, there is also a large number of sites that have been polluted by anthropogenic activities, with many of those requiring active remediation to reduce their environmental impact. Cost-effective remedial strategies are however still sorely needed. At the laboratory-scale in situ formation of magnetite through the joint addition of nitrate and Fe(II) has shown to be a promising new technique. However, its applicability under a wider range of environmental conditions still needs to be assessed. Here we use sediment and groundwater from a severely polluted coastal aquifer and explore the efficiency of nitrate-Fe(II) treatments in mitigating dissolved As concentrations. In selected experiments >99% of dissolved As was removed, compared to unamended controls, and maintained upon addition of lactate, a labile organic carbon source. Pre- and post-experimental characterisation of iron (Fe) mineral phases suggested a >90% loss of amorphous Fe oxides in favour of increased crystalline, recalcitrant oxide and sulfide phases. Magnetite formation did not occur via the nitrate-dependent oxidation of the amended Fe(II) as originally expected. Instead, magnetite is thought to have formed by the Fe(II)-catalysed transformation of pre-existing amorphous and crystalline Fe oxides. The extent of amorphous and crystalline Fe oxide transformation was then limited by the exhaustion of dissolved Fe(II). Elevated phosphate concentrations lowered the treatment efficacy, indicating joint removal of phosphate is necessary for maximum impact. The remedial efficiency was not impacted by varying salinities, thus rendering the tested approach a viable remediation method for coastal aquifers.

Nitrate in Drinking Water during Pregnancy and Spontaneous Preterm Birth: A Retrospective Within-Mother Analysis in California.

Background:Nitrate is a widespread groundwater contaminant and a leading cause of drinking water quality violations in California. Associations between nitrate exposure and select adverse birth outcomes have been suggested, but few studies have examined gestational exposures to nitrate and risk of preterm birth (before 37 wk gestation).Objective:We investigated the association between elevated nitrate in drinking water and spontaneous preterm birth through a within-mother retrospective cohort study of births in California.Methods:We acquired over 6 million birth certificate records linked with Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development hospital discharge data for California births from 2000–2011. We used public water system monitoring records to estimate nitrate concentrations in drinking water for each woman’s residence during gestation. After exclusions, we constructed a sample of 1,443,318 consecutive sibling births in order to conduct a within-mother analysis. We used separate conditional logistic regression models to estimate the odds of preterm birth at 20–31 and 32–36 wk, respectively, among women whose nitrate exposure changed between consecutive pregnancies.Results:Spontaneous preterm birth at 20–31 wk was increased in association with tap water nitrate concentrations during pregnancy of 5 to [odds ratio ; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.29, 1.67] and (; 95% CI: 1.49, 4.26) compared with (as nitrogen). Corresponding estimates for spontaneous preterm birth at 32–36 wk were positive but close to the null for 5 to nitrate (; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.15) and for nitrate (; 95% CI: 0.85, 1.31) vs. nitrate. Our findings were similar in several secondary and sensitivity analyses, including in a conventional individual-level design.Discussion:The results suggest that nitrate in drinking water is associated with increased odds of spontaneous preterm birth. Drinking Water Quality and Provision in Six Low-Income, Peri-Urban Communities of Lusaka, Zambia.

Lusaka, Zambia, is a rapidly growing city located on a vulnerable karstic dolomite aquifer that provides most of the city's drinking water. Over 65% of residents live in peri‐urban communities with inadequate sanitation leading to widespread groundwater contamination and the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera. To fill the water service gap, Water Trusts were created: public/private partnerships designed to provide clean water to peri‐urban community residents. Water Trusts extract groundwater via boreholes, treat it with chlorine, and distribute it to residents via public kiosks. We investigated the efficacy of drinking water provision to residents in six of Lusaka's peri‐urban communities with Water Trusts. Water samples were collected from Water Trust boreholes and kiosks, privately owned boreholes, and shallow wells during four sampling efforts. To assess potential risk to human health, water samples were analyzed for Escherichia coli (E. coli) and nitrate. Shallow wells were significantly more contaminated with E. coli than Water Trust boreholes, kiosks, and private boreholes (Tukey‐adjusted p values of 9.9 × 10−6). Shallow wells and private boreholes had significantly higher nitrate‐N concentrations (mean of 29.6 mg/L) than the Water Trust boreholes and kiosks (mean of 8.8 mg/L) (p value = 1.1 × 10−4). In 2016, a questionnaire was distributed to Water Trust managers to assess their ability to meet demands. In the six communities studied, Water Trusts served only about 60% of their residents. Water Trusts provide a much safer alternative to shallow wells with respect to nitrate and E. coli, but they struggle to keep pace with growing demand.

Hydrogeochemical modeling for groundwater management in arid and semiarid regions using MODFLOW and MT3DMS: A case study of the Jeffara of Medenine coastal aquifer, South‐Eastern Tunisia

AbstractThe study of water quality and the quantification of reserves and their variations according to natural and anthropogenic forcing is necessary to establish an adequate management plan for groundwater resources. For this purpose, a modeling approach is a useful tool that allows, after calibration phase and verification of simulation, and under different scenarios of forcing and operational changes, to estimate and control the groundwater quantity and quality. The main objective of this study is to collect all available data in a model that simulates the Jeffara of Medenine coastal aquifer system functioning. To achieve this goal, a conceptual model was constructed based on previous studies and hydrogeological investigations. The regional groundwater numerical flow model for the Jeffara aquifer was developed using MODFLOW working under steady‐state and transient conditions. Groundwater elevations measured from the piezometric wells distributed throughout the study area in 1973 were selected as the target water levels for steady state (head) model calibration. A transient simulation was undertaken for the 42 years from 1973 to 2015. The historical transient model calibration was satisfactory, consistent with the continuous piezometric decline in response to the increase in groundwater abstraction. The developed numerical model was used to study the system's behavior over the next 35 years under various constraints. Two scenarios for potential groundwater extraction for the period 2015–2050 are presented. The predictive simulations show the effect of the increase of the exploitation on the piezometric levels. To study the phenomenon of salinization, which is one of the most severe and widespread groundwater contamination problems, especially in coastal regions, a solute transport model has been constructed by using MT3DMS software coupled with the groundwater flow model. The best calibration results are obtained when the connection with the overlying superficial aquifer is considered suggesting that groundwater contamination originates from this aquifer.Recommendations for water resource managers The results of this study show that Groundwater resources of Jeffara of Medenine coastal aquifer in Tunisia are under immense pressure from multiple stresses. The water resources manager must consider the impact of economic and demographic development in groundwater management to avoid the intrusion of saline water. The results obtained presented some reference information that can serve as a basis for water resources planning. The model runs to provide information that managers can use to regulate and adequately control the Jeffara of Medenine water resources.

Heavy Metal Contamination and Migration in Correspondence of an Electroplating Site on the Hilly Lands of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, China

The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area presents the highest number of electroplating corporations in China; some of them of very large scale. Electroplating emissions are the cause of widespread heavy metal contamination of both soil and groundwater in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. Hence, the reuse of electroplating sites in this area should be preceded by an analysis of heavy metal characteristics and migration in the soil and groundwater. We performed such analyses in correspondence of a relocated electroplating site on the hilly lands of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, and quantitatively determined the spatial distribution of heavy metals. Moreover, we discussed the migration of heavy metals under the specific hydrogeological conditions of the area. The results showed that the soil and groundwater in correspondence of the electroplating factory were polluted by heavy metals in different degrees. The over-standard rates of Ni, Cr6+, and Cu in the soil were 20.5%, 12.8%, and 2.7%, respectively; meanwhile, those of Ni, Pb, and Cr6+ in the groundwater were 41.7%, 33.3%, and 33.3%, respectively. The pattern of heavy metal pollution reflected the functional division of the electroplating factory, the contaminants should have mainly derived from the leakage of electroplating wastes. A low-permeable silt clay layer located below the fill soil layer limited the downward transportation of heavy metals, which were hence mainly concentrated in the surface soils. However, in another area of the site characterized by shallow-buried and completely decomposed granite (having high permeability), heavy metals could be transported much deeper. The adsorption of Cr6+ by the soil tends to be weak in an acid-acidic environment, explaining the relatively high concentrations of Cr6+ recorded in the upper 10 m of soil. Although the conductivity of the shallow aquifers was low, the occurrence of acid soil and of an oxidizing water environment should have favored the transport of Cr6+ and Ni in the groundwater, causing high concentrations of Cr6+ and Ni in correspondence of the electroplating workshops (characterized by a relatively low water table and deep heavy metal transport depth). The excess of Pb in the groundwater probably resulted from the high Pb content of granite in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. Overall, we observed high concentrations of Ni, Cr6+, and Cu in the shallow soil and groundwater located in correspondence of the electroplating site on the hilly lands of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. The presence of low permeable clay restricted the downward diffusion of heavy metals. However, in the presence of acid soil and shallow buried granite, or of oxidized groundwater, the migration depth of Ni and Cr6+ was significantly higher.

Disinfection Byproducts in Rajasthan, India: Are Trihalomethanes a Sufficient Indicator of Disinfection Byproduct Exposure in Low-Income Countries?

The implementation of chlorine disinfection in low-income countries reduces the risk of waterborne illness but initiates exposure to disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Like high-income countries, low-income countries typically are adopting regulations focusing on trihalomethanes (THM4) as an indicator of overall DBP exposure. However, the use of impaired water sources can decouple the formation of THM4 from other DBP classes that are more potent toxins. The documentation of DBP species other than THM4 is rare in low-income countries, where water sources may be degraded by inadequate sanitation infrastructure and other uncontrolled wastewater discharges. We measured THM4 and 21 unregulated DBPs in tap waters and laboratory-treated source waters from two cities in northwestern India. The contribution of each DBP class to the cumulative toxicity was estimated by weighting each species by metrics of toxic potency; haloacetonitriles typically were the dominant contributor, while the contribution of THM4 was negligible. THM4 concentrations did not correlate with the total toxic potency-weighted DBP concentrations. Although THM4 rarely exceeded international guidelines, DBPs of greater toxicological concern were observed in high concentrations. The total toxic potency-weighted DBP concentrations in some waters were elevated compared to conventional drinking waters in high-income countries and more closely resembled chlorine-disinfected wastewater effluents. Artificial sweeteners confirmed widespread contamination of both surface and groundwaters by domestic sewage. The results suggest that THM4 may not be an adequate indicator of overall DBP exposure in impaired water supplies prevalent in some low-income nations.

Quantifying Riverine Recharge Impacts on Redox Conditions and Arsenic Release in Groundwater Aquifers Along the Red River, Vietnam.

Widespread contamination of groundwater with geogenic arsenic is attributed to microbial dissolution of arsenic-bearing iron (oxyhydr)oxides minerals coupled to the oxidation of organic carbon. The recharge sources to an aquifer can influence groundwater arsenic concentrations by transport of dissolved arsenic or reactive constituents that affect arsenic mobilization. To understand how different recharge sources affect arsenic contamination-in particular through their influence on organic carbon and sulfate cycling-we delineated and quantified recharge sources in the arsenic affected region around Hanoi, Vietnam. We constrained potential end-member compositions and employed a novel end-member mixing model using an ensemble approach to apportion recharge sources. Groundwater arsenic and dissolved organic carbon concentrations are controlled by the dominant source of recharge. High arsenic concentrations are prevalent regardless of high dissolved organic carbon or ammonium levels, indicative of organic matter decomposition, where the dominant recharge source is riverine. In contrast, high dissolved organic carbon and significant organic matter decomposition are required to generate elevated groundwater arsenic where recharge is largely nonriverine. These findings suggest that in areas of riverine recharge, arsenic may be efficiently mobilized from reactive surficial environments and carried from river-aquifer interfaces into groundwater. In groundwaters derived from nonriverine recharge areas, significantly more organic carbon mineralization is required to obtain equivalent levels of arsenic mobilization within inland sediments. This method can be broadly applied to examine the connection between hydrology, geochemistry and groundwater quality.

Biogeochemical phosphorus cycling in groundwater ecosystems – Insights from South and Southeast Asian floodplain and delta aquifers

The biogeochemical cycling of phosphorus (P) in South and Southeast Asian floodplain and delta aquifers has received insufficient attention in research studies, even though dissolved orthophosphate (PO43−) in this region is closely linked with the widespread contamination of groundwater with toxic arsenic (As). The overarching aim of this study was to characterize the enrichment of P in anoxic groundwater and to provide insight into the biogeochemical mechanisms underlying its mobilization, subsurface transport, and microbial cycling. Detailed groundwater analyses and in situ experiments were conducted that focused on three representative field sites located in the Red River Delta (RRD) of Vietnam and the Bengal Delta Plain (BDP) in West Bengal, India. The results showed that the total concentrations of dissolved P (TDP) ranged from 0.03 to 1.50 mg L−1 in groundwater, with PO43− being the dominant P species. The highest concentrations occurred in anoxic sandy Holocene aquifers where PO43− was released into groundwater through the microbial degradation of organic carbon and the concomitant reductive dissolution of Fe(III)-(hydr)oxides. The mobilization of PO43− may still constitute an active process within shallow Holocene sediments. Furthermore, a sudden supply of organic carbon may rapidly decrease the redox potential, which causes an increase in TDP concentrations in groundwater, as demonstrated by a field experiment. Considering the subsurface transport of PO43−, Pleistocene aquifer sediments represented effective sinks; however, the enduring contact between oxic Pleistocene sediments and anoxic groundwater also changed the sediments PO43−-sorption capacity over time. A stable isotope analysis of PO43−-bound oxygen indicated the influences of intracellular microbial cycling as well as a specific PO43− source with a distinct isotopically heavy signal. Consequently, porous aquifers in Asian floodplain and delta regions proved to be ideal natural laboratories to study the biogeochemical cycling of P and its behavior in groundwater environments.

Uranium Removal from Groundwater by Permeable Reactive Barrier with Zero-Valent Iron and Organic Carbon Mixtures: Laboratory and Field Studies

Zhovty Vody city, located in south-central Ukraine, has long been an important center for the Ukrainian uranium and iron industries. Uranium and iron mining and processing activities during the Cold War resulted in poorly managed sources of radionuclides and heavy metals. Widespread groundwater and surface water contamination has occurred, which creates a significant risk to drinking water supplies. Hydrogeologic and geochemical conditions near large uranium mine tailings storage facility (TSF) were characterized to provide data to locate, design and install a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) to treat groundwater contaminated by leachate infiltrating from the TSF. The effectiveness of three different permeable reactive materials was investigated: zero-valent iron (ZVI) for reduction, sorption, and precipitation of redox-sensitive oxyanions; phosphate material to transform dissolved metals to less soluble phases; and organic carbon substrates to promote bioremediation processes. Batch and column experiments with Zhovty Vody site groundwater were conducted to evaluate reactivity of the materials. Reaction rates, residence time and comparison with site-specific clean-up standards were determined. Results of the study demonstrate the effectiveness of the use of the PRB for ground water protection near uranium mine TSF. The greatest decrease was obtained using ZVI-based reactive media and the combined media of ZVI/phosphate/organic carbon combinations.
