Substitution of Sn in the high-permeability MnZn ferrite for wide temperature applications

To meet the challenge of varied working temperatures of inductance components in new energy vehicle and 5G communication, the high-TC high-permeability MnZn ferrite with excellent temperature stability was developed by the addition of SnO2. In this series of samples, initial permeability μi maintains large values in a wide temperature range. With increasing the SnO2 content, the temperature of the second permeability peak Tsp decreases and meanwhile Curie temperature TC maintains as high as 160 °C. For the best sample with 6000 ppm SnO2, μi at 25 °C is 7244 and exhibits the excellent temperature stability with the low specific temperature coefficient of 0.35×10-6 °C-1 between 25 and 130 °C. The addition of SnO2 generates Fe2+ and adjusts the magneto-crystalline anisotropy constant K1 = 0 point, which is responsible for the wide-temperature high permeability. The effect of SnO2 addition on magnetization process has also been clarified.

Gel polymer electrolytes for rechargeable batteries toward wide-temperature applications.

Rechargeable batteries, typically represented by lithium-ion batteries, have taken a huge leap in energy density over the last two decades. However, they still face material/chemical challenges in ensuring safety and long service life at temperatures beyond the optimum range, primarily due to the chemical/electrochemical instabilities of conventional liquid electrolytes against aggressive electrode reactions and temperature variation. In this regard, a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) with its liquid components immobilized and stabilized by a solid matrix, capable of retaining almost all the advantageous natures of the liquid electrolytes and circumventing the interfacial issues that exist in the all-solid-state electrolytes, is of great significance to realize rechargeable batteries with extended working temperature range. We begin this review with the main challenges faced in the development of GPEs, based on extensive literature research and our practical experience. Then, a significant section is dedicated to the requirements and design principles of GPEs for wide-temperature applications, with special attention paid to the feasibility, cost, and environmental impact. Next, the research progress of GPEs is thoroughly reviewed according to the strategies applied. In the end, we outline some prospects of GPEs related to innovations in material sciences, advanced characterizations, artificial intelligence, and environmental impact analysis, hoping to spark new research activities that ultimately bring us a step closer to realizing wide-temperature rechargeable batteries.

Progress of Polymer Electrolytes Worked in Solid-State Lithium Batteries for Wide-Temperature Application.

Solid-state Li-ion batteries have emerged as the most promising next-generation energy storage systems, offering theoretical advantages such as superior safety and higher energy density. However, polymer-based solid-state Li-ion batteries face challenges across wide temperature ranges. The primary issue lies in the fact that most polymer electrolytes exhibit relatively low ionic conductivity at or below room temperature. This sensitivity to temperature variations poses challenges in operating solid-state lithium batteries at sub-zero temperatures. Moreover, elevated working temperatures lead to polymer shrinkage and deformation, ultimately resulting in battery failure. To address this challenge of polymer-based solid-state batteries, this review presents an overview of various promising polymer electrolyte systems. The review provides insights into the temperature-dependent physical and electrochemical properties of polymers, aiming to expand the temperature range of operation. The review also further summarizes modification strategies for polymer electrolytes suited to diverse temperatures. The final section summarizes the performance of various polymer-based solid-state batteries at different temperatures. Valuable insights and potential future research directions for designing wide-temperature polymer electrolytes are presented based on the differences in battery performance. This information is intended to inspire practical applications of wide-temperature polymer-based solid-state batteries.

Temperature Compensation of Laser Methane Sensor Based on a Large-Scale Dataset and the ISSA-BP Neural Network.

We aimed to improve the detection accuracy of laser methane sensors in expansive temperature application environments. In this paper, a large-scale dataset of the measured concentration of the sensor at different temperatures is established, and a temperature compensation model based on the ISSA-BP neural network is proposed. On the data side, a large-scale dataset of 15,810 sets of laser methane sensors with different temperatures and concentrations was established, and an Improved Isolation Forest algorithm was used to clean the large-scale data and remove the outliers in the dataset. On the modeling framework, a temperature compensation model based on the ISSA-BP neural network is proposed. The quasi-reflective learning, chameleon swarm algorithm, Lévy flight, and artificial rabbits optimization are utilized to improve the initialization of the sparrow population, explorer position, anti-predator position, and position of individual sparrows in each generation, respectively, to improve the global optimization seeking ability of the standard sparrow search algorithm. The ISSA-BP temperature compensation model far outperforms the four models, SVM, RF, BP, and PSO-BP, in model evaluation metrics such as MAE, MAPE, RMSE, and R-square for both the training and test sets. The results show that the algorithm in this paper can significantly improve the detection accuracy of the laser methane sensor under the wide temperature application environment.

High Chaos Induced Multiple-Anion-Rich Solvation Structure Enabling Ultrahigh Voltage and Wide Temperature Lithium-Metal Batteries.

The optimal electrolyte for ultrahigh energy density (>400 Wh/kg) lithium-metal batteries with a LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode is required to withstand high voltage (≥4.7 V) and be adaptable over a wide temperature range. However, the battery performance is degraded by aggressive electrode-electrolyte reactions at high temperature and high voltage, while excessive growth of lithium dendrites usually occurs due to poor kinetics at low temperature. Accordingly, the development of electrolytes has encountered challenges in that there is almost no electrolyte simultaneously meeting the above requirements. Herein, a high chaos electrolyte design strategy is proposed, which promotes the formation of weak solvation structures involving multiple anions. By tailoring a Li+-EMC-DMC-DFOB--PO2F2--PF6- multiple-anion-rich solvation sheath, a robust inorganic-rich interphase is obtained for the electrode-electrolyte interphase (EEI), which is resistant to the intense interfacial reactions at high voltage (4.7 V) and high temperature (45 °C). In addition, the Li+ solvation is weakened by the multiple-anion solvation structure, which is a benefit to Li+ desolventization at low temperature (-30 °C), greatly improving the charge transfer kinetics and inhibiting the lithium dendrite growth. This work provides an innovative strategy to manipulate the high chaos electrolyte to further optimize solvation chemistry for high voltage and wide temperature applications.

Experimental investigation supported by artificial neural networks (ANNs) for predicting the heating performance of a cyclone separator coupled with induction heating coil

This paper proposes a novel dust separation and thermal inactivation system that couples an electromagnetic induction heating coil with a cyclone separator. The idea is aimed at the thermal inactivation of potential microorganisms (viruses and other pathogens) associated with dust-laden gas streams, particularly from road surfaces. The integrated system was tested in an experimental setup as a proof-of-concept investigation at different cyclone-induction heating temperatures of 100–400 °C (373–673 K) and air discharge flow velocities of 5–30 m/s. In addition, the influence of operating parameters such as cyclone heating temperature (as induction heating inputs), inlet air velocity, and heating time on the efficacy of the induction heating process were investigated. The time-averaged temperature measurements along the axial direction (z-down) showed predominant temperature fluctuations in the cylinder and cone sections for all cases, especially when the gas plummets down the cyclone. Temperature was highest in the conical section (z = 525 mm) at 320 °C (593 K) at 5 m/s and lowest in the outlet section (z = 375 mm) at 185 °C, which was expected. The results show that inlet air velocity plays a crucial role in affecting temperature dynamics. Conclusive results indicate that with increasing temperature, pressure drop decreases significantly. Along with the experimental results, multiple regression indices using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) modeling were used to predict the cyclone’s induction heating performance, showing good prediction quality in terms of the mean square errors (MSE and RMSE) and the correlation coefficient R2: 0.99. The study demonstrates the technical viability of integrating induction heating coil to a cyclone separator for wide temperature applications.

Enhanced Dielectric and Mechanical Performances of the (La + Nb) Codoped TiO2/Silicone Rubber Composites

Silicone rubber (SR) has gained great interest because of its fast deformation response, low modulus, high rebound rate, and wide temperature application range. However, their development is hampered by the low dielectric constant. Adding dielectric ceramics may be a solution. Herein, (La + Nb) codoped TiO2/SR composites are fabricated and their properties are systematically tested. By adding codoped TiO2, the performances of the composites are enhanced. High permittivity (3.63) and low loss tangent (7.07 × 10−4) are gained in the SR composites with 30 wt% codoped TiO2. The evenly dispersed codoped TiO2 and the enhanced interfacial polarization effect can be responsible for this. The composites also exhibit enhanced tensile strength (565 kPa) and elongation (259%). In addition, the SR composites are thermally stable up to 415 °C. These superior properties can improve the electrodeformation performance of SR composites, which has great potential in the fields of flexible actuators, bionic flexible robots, next‐generation intelligent medical devices, and green energy harvesting.

Growth and enhanced electrical properties of PIN-PMN-PT piezoelectric single crystal grown by the solid-state crystal growth method

0.32Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-0.335Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.345PbTiO3 single crystals were successfully grown by a solid-state crystal growth (SSCG) method through precise control of the key growth parameters. The effects of the sintering temperature and the soaking time on the growth of the PIN-PMN-PT single crystals were investigated. The growth distance is up to 1069 µm for [110]-oriented PIN-PMN-PT single crystal grown at 1150 °C for 50 h. The microstructure, crystal structure and dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties were systematically investigated for the SSCG-grown [110]-oriented PIN-PMN-PT single crystals. The [110]-oriented PIN-PMN-PT single crystals exhibit high piezoelectric properties (d33 ∼ 1041pC/N, d33 * ∼ 1024 pm/V), Curie temperature (TC ∼ 250 °C) and ferroelectric properties (EC ∼ 8.4 kV/cm and Pr ∼33 μC/cm2). Further, the [001]-oriented single crystals also possess outstanding piezoelectric properties (d33 ∼ 1004pC/N, d33 * ∼ 1203 pm/V), Curie temperature (TC ∼ 266 °C) and ferroelectric properties (EC ∼ 9.7 kV/cm and Pr ∼36 μC/cm2), which are much superior to those of counterpart ceramics.This work opens the door of growth of PIN-PMN-PT single crystals by SSCG method and the SSCG-grown PIN-PMN-PT single crystals are very promising candidates for high performance electromechanical devices with wide temperature and electric field application.

Synergistic interphase modification with dual electrolyte additives to boost cycle stability of high nickel cathode for all-climate battery

B-containing electrolyte additives are widely used to enhance the cycle performance at low temperature and the rate capability of lithium-ion batteries by constructing an efficient cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) to facilitate the rapid Li+ migration. Nevertheless, its wide-temperature application has been limited by the instability of B-derived CEI layer at high temperature. Herein, dual electrolyte additives, consisting of lithium tetraborate (Li2TB) and 2, 4-difluorobiphenyl (FBP), are proposed to boost the wide-temperature performances of LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM) cathode. Theoretical calculation and electrochemical performances analyses indicate that Li2TB and FBP undergo successive decomposition to form a unique dual-layer CEI. FBP acts as a synergistic filming additive to Li2TB, enhancing the high-temperature performance of NCM cathode while preserving the excellent low-temperature cycle stability and the superior rate capability conferred by Li2TB additive. Therefore, the capacity retention of NCM||Li cells using optimal FBP-Li2TB dual electrolyte additives increases to 100% after 200 cycles at −10 °C, 99% after 200 cycles at 25 °C, and 83% after 100 cycles at 55 °C, respectively, much superior to that of base electrolyte (63%/69%/45%). More surprisingly, galvanostatic charge/discharge experiments at different temperatures reveal that NCM||Li cells using FBP-Li2TB additives can operate at temperatures ranging from −40 °C to 60 °C. This synergistic interphase modification utilizing dual electrolyte additives to construct a unique dual-layer CEI adaptive to a wide temperature range, provides valuable insights to the practical applications of NCM cathodes for all-climate batteries.

Toward reversible wide-temperature Zn storage by regulating the electrolyte solvation structure via trimethyl phosphate

The introduction of TMP changes the coordination environment of Zn 2+ to reshape the hydrogen bond network of water. A novel strategy is established to regulate Zn 2+ -solvation shell, restraining vanadium dissolution, suppressing Zn dendrite formation and contributing to uniform deposition of Zn 2+ . • A novel Zn 2+ -solvation shell is formed via trimethyl phosphate. • Zn symmetrical battery exhibits an ultralong cyclic lifespan for 7000 h at 1 mA cm −2 . • The cathode dissolution and self-discharge of battery are efficiently suppressed. • Zn|VO 2 (B) cell possesses 97.86% capacity retention after 1200 cycles at 1 A·g −1 (0 °C). The wide-scale application of zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) is largely restricted by dendrite formation, hydrogen evolution corrosion and capacity fading, caused by the coordinated H 2 O within the Zn 2+ -solvation shell as well as reactive active water in the bulk electrolyte. Here, one green and flame-retardant additive, trimethyl phosphate (TMP) is introduced into aqueous electrolyte systems, contributing to Zn 2+ -solvation shell reshaping and promoting the stability hydrogen bonding network of H 2 O. The strategy is significant in suppressing water-induced side reactions and dendrite growth, enabling an ultralong cycling lifespan of 7000 h at 1 mA·cm −2 and 0.5 mAh·cm −2 in Zn symmetrical cell. In addition, Zn|VO 2 (B) full cells with TMP addition exhibit an ultralong cyclic performance for 1200 cycles at 1 A·g −1 with 97.86% capacity retention even at 0 °C, which contributes to taking a step closer to commercial application. This work demonstrates the feasibility of developing electrolytes for practical ZIBs that integrate safety, sustainability and wide-temperature applications.

Design and fabrication of high performance supercapacitor based MoS2@TiO2 composite electrode for wide range temperature applications

Hydrothermal crystallization was used to synthesize an advanced hybrid system containing titania and molybdenum disulfide (with a TiO2:MoS2 molar ratio of 1:1). The way in which the conditions of hydrothermal treatment (180 °C/12 h) and thermal treatment (500 °C) affect the physicochemical properties of the products was determined. A physicochemical analysis of the fabricated materials included the determination of the microstructure and morphology (scanning and transmission electron microscopy—SEM and TEM), crystalline structure (X-ray diffraction method—XRD), chemical surface composition (energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy—EDS) and parameters of the porous structure (low-temperature N2 sorption), as well as the chemical surface concentration (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy—XPS). The MoS2@TiO2 electrode shows a high specific capacitance of 325 F g−1 at 2 A g−1 and after 5000 test cycles, 99.1% of the capacitance is retained indicating excellent cycle stability and good reversibility. Moreover, MoS2@TiO2//AC ASC presents a maximum energy density of 45.5Wh/kg at power density of 730.7 W/kg and a high energy density of 20.8Wh/kg is still retained even at high power density of 3700 W/kg. The presented results show an enhanced supercapacitor behavior of the MoS2@TiO2 electrodes prepared using a low-cost and simple scalable process and confirm their evident potential for energy storage/conversion applications.

A Nb-doped metal hydride electrode with overcharge resistance and wide temperature performance for aqueous rechargeable batteries

Metal hydride electrodes have been widely used for aqueous rechargeable batteries with good wide temperature performance compared to lithium-ion batteries. For the first time, the design and application of Nb-doped metal hydride electrode with excellent overcharge resistance in this study for La0.46Ce0.42-xPr0.03Nd0.08Zr0.02NbxNi4.41Mn0.36Al0.28 (x = 0, 0.05 or 0.1). The ratio of capacity retention after the 100th cycle for charging 420 and 360 mAh g−1 increases from 86.99% (x = 0) to 99.93% (x = 0.1) at 25 °C, and from 83.95% (x = 0) to 99.28% for (x = 0.1) at 50 °C. Furthermore, the capacity of simulated wide temperature and overcharge experiment at -20 °C increases from 86.3 mAh g−1 (x = 0) to 217.8 mAh g−1 (x = 0.1) after the 100th cycle at 50 °C, due to the increase of overcharge resistance. This material makes it a promising candidate as electrode material for wide temperature applications.

Stress Engineering of Perovskite Ceramics for Enhanced Piezoelectricity and Temperature Stability toward Energy Harvesting

Piezoelectric energy harvesting as an available technology for realizing self-powered microsensors has attracted increasing attention. However, the combination of large piezoelectricity and high-temperature stability is a huge challenge in perovskite ceramics for developing piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEHs) toward wide-temperature applications. Herein, a stress engineering strategy was proposed to address this problem by combining lattice stress and heterogeneous interface stress. Based on this concept, (Ni0.9Zn0.1)TiO3-modified Pb[(Zn1/3Nb2/3)0.2(Zr1/2Ti1/2)0.8]O3 ceramic achieves both enhanced piezoelectricity and high-temperature stability (d33 = 485 pC/N ± 20%) over a wide temperature range of 24–250 °C, superior to the pristine counterpart and many state-of-the-art commercial lead zirconate titanate-based ceramics. This benefits from the hierarchical domains with high piezoelectric activity and temperature stability caused by stress engineering. Furthermore, the assembled corresponding PEH not only successfully drives a wireless monitoring and alarm system but also exhibits considerable power generation capacities (e.g., power density of up to 98.8 μW/cm3) even at 250 °C. Our work may provide a pathway for developing high-performance perovskite materials with high piezoelectricity and thermal reliability toward high-temperature piezoelectric energy harvesting.

Nano‐scale BN interface for ultra‐stable and wide temperature range tolerable Zn anode

AbstractAqueous Zn‐based energy storage device (ZESD) is a promising candidate for large‐scale energy storage applications due to its significant merits like low cost, inherent safety, and environmental benignity. However, one shortcoming of ZESDs is the performance deficiency of pristine Zn anode caused by detrimental dendrite formation and side reactions. In this work, a novel boron nitride nano‐scale interface was established for ultra‐stable and wide temperature range tolerable anode (BN@Zn) by a scalable magnetron sputtering technique. The as‐introduced BN layers afford enhanced Zn deposition kinetics for a wide temperature application range from −20 to 60°C and effectively mitigated dendritic growth, which were ascribed to the strong interlayer bonds and uniform active sites as demonstrated by both experimental and density functional theory research results. Thus, the ultra‐thin BN interface could significantly improve the reaction kinetics and electrochemical stability of Zn anode, providing a new perspective towards the advanced ZESDs.image

Challenges and advances in wide-temperature rechargeable lithium batteries

Building rechargeable lithium batteries for wide-temperature applications requires us to investigate the battery failure mechanism at low/high temperature, design advanced electrode/electrolyte materials, and optimize the battery management system.

Wear mechanism of Ag as solid lubricant for wide range temperature application in micro-beam plasma cladded Ni60 coatings

The effect of Ag content on the microstructure, compositions, and wear resistance of micro-beam plasma cladded Ni60 coating was studied. The friction layer formed on the wear surface at different temperatures and its influence on tribological properties were discussed, and wear mechanism of Ag added Ni60 coating were clarified. The results show that adding Ag can effectively improve the wear resistance of cladding layer. The friction coefficient of the cladding layer decreases from 0.40, 0.10 and 0.22–0.20, 0.08 and 0.18 at 25 ℃, 300 ℃ and 600 ℃, respectively. At room temperature, the wear rate of nickel based coating is 14.13 * 10−7 mm/Nm, and reduces to 10.55 * 10−7 mm/Nm with 5%Ag addition. The excellent tribological performance at room temperatures is attributed to the existence of Ag layer formed in cladding process. The addition of silver significantly reduced the degree of abrasive wear. However, at higher temperature of 300 ℃, Ag precipitates from the coating and begins to generate Ag2O oxide, which avoids the direct contact of metal and effectively reduces the friction coefficient. The wear mechanism is oxidation wear and abrasive wear. At 600 ℃, high temperature softening results in obvious adhesive wear of the coating, and Ag particles accumulate on the surface of the cladding layer in the form of "sweating", and results in the formation of self-lubricants with NiO and AgCrO2. Therefore, oxide lubrication layer formation such as Ag2O, NiO and AgCrO2 at high temperatures is benefit for low friction coefficient at elevated temperature.

Exploring the performance of carbonate and ether-based electrolytes for anode-free lithium metal batteries operating under various conditions

An anode-free lithium metal battery (AFLMB) configuration can be used to develop electrolytes for wide-temperature applications. The charge/discharge performance of an electrolyte consisting of lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF 6 ) in a mixture of fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE), and ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) has been is reported as an electrolyte for lithium metal batteries. It has a good passivating capability and wide electrochemical windows relative to the commercial electrolyte. Conversely, its lower ionic conductivity and high viscosity impede practical application. Hence, an electrolyte of 1 M LiPF 6 in EA/FEC/TTE/EMC (2:1:5:2 by vol.) is developed by adding a quaternary solvent of ethyl acetate (EA). The electrolyte exhibits a lower viscosity and higher ionic conductivity than 1 M LiPF 6 in FEC/TTE/EMC (3:5:2 by vol.). At 0 °C, 1 M LiPF 6 in EA/FEC/TTE/EMC (2:1:5:2 by vol.) provides capacity retention of 30 % and the average Coulombic efficiency (av. CE) of 95 % using the Cu||NMC111 after 40 cycles at a current density of 0.2 mA/cm 2 . The synergy of higher ionic conductivity and formation of LiF layer in the developed electrolyte extends the service-temperature range of AFLMB. This study opens an avenue in developing low-temperature electrolytes using an AFLMB. • The cycling performance of an anode-free battery is extended under various conditions. • 1 M LiPF 6 in EA/FEC/TTE/EMC (2:1:5:2 by vol.) electrolyte is developed. • At 0 °C, it provides capacity retention of 30% using Cu.||NMC111 after 40 cycles. • The high solvation power of EA gives lower viscosity and higher ionic conductivity. • The developed electrolyte has stable cycling compared to EC/DEC electrolyte.

LiF‐Induced Stable Solid Electrolyte Interphase for a Wide Temperature SnO2‐Based Anode Extensible to −50 °C

AbstractLithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) suffer dramatic energy reduction, and are even unable to safely charge below ‐10 °C, due to sluggish Li+ transport kinetics in the anode, electrolyte and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), as well as large overpotential which causes Li plating on the anode surface. Herein, a SnO2‐LiF‐graphite (SLG) composite anode is developed for wide temperature application. The SLG with a propylene carbonate electrolyte delivers a stable capacity of more than 900 mA h g−1 at 60 °C with 100 mA g−1, maintaining 823.9 mA h g−1 at ‐10 °C. When matched with a tetrahydrofuran‐based electrolyte, the SLG delivers stable capacities of 780.4 mA h g−1 at ‐40 °C and 637.2 mA h g−1 at ‐50 °C, respectively. It is demonstrated that the LiF‐induced inorganic‐rich SEI maintains the nanostructure of the active Sn, and that their interfaces with the electrolyte are highly stable. Furthermore, the formation of α‐Sn with higher Li+ diffusion kinetics results in a very small overpotential (≈0.18 V) of lithiation for SLG from 30 °C to ‐50 °C. This work shows that LiF‐modified SnO2 anodes matched with suitable electrolytes can qualify the LIBs for a safe and long‐life at wide temperature, which is helpful to further promote these batteries for low‐temperature applications.

An all-climate CFx/Li battery with mechanism-guided electrolyte

High-energy-density CFx/Li batteries have attracted wide applications, but encountered poor environmental adaptability at high/low temperatures. Guided with unique electrolyte-involved reaction mechanism, propylene carbonate (PC)/methyl butyrate (MB) co-solvent formulation was optimized to tune the desolvation barrier and stability for wide temperature operation. Weak affinity of Li+-MB and unique solvation structure of electrolyte, which facilitated easy desolvation at both high rate and low temperature, were uncovered with theoretical calculations and spectra characterizations. Desolvation process from intermediate and percolation-type reaction were clearly revealed with in-situ FT-IR and ex-situ TEM. The synergistic effect of handy desolvation with fast kinetics at the interface enabled excellent rate performance (1C, 834 mAh g−1) at +25°C and high capacity (240 mAh g−1) at low temperature of -70°C. Simultaneously, the stability of electrolyte assisted to realize high-temperature tolerance up to +95°C. The mechanism-guided electrolyte design offers deep understanding and novel strategy to improve CFx/Li batteries for wide temperature applications.
