This perspective talk focuses on the history and status of new materials with targeted application in solar energy conversion. Specifically, photoelectrochemical energy conversion/solar water splitting and wide bandgap oxide semiconductors and alloys for solar windows and displays are the two targeted application areas. The Cu-M-V-O family of oxide semiconductors will be discussed in this talk. Both synthetic aspects and chemical composition-property-performance correlations will be presented.Acknowledgements.
