Injuries from the Wichita Falls Tornado: Implications for Prevention

We examined the circumstances of death and injury among victims of the tornado that struck Wichita Falls, Texas, on 10 April 1979. We also assessed the protective measures taken by a representative sample of community residents who suffered no major injury in order to estimate the relative risk of injury to people directly in the tornado's path. Twenty-six (60 percent) of the 43 traumatic deaths and 30 (51 percent) of the 59 serious injuries occurred in people who, despite ample warning, went to their cars to drive out of the storm's path. These people had a risk of serious or fatal injury of 23 per 1000. People who remained indoors and in stationary homes were at relatively low risk (3 per 1000) if they took simple precautions; people in mobile homes were at greatest risk (85 per 1000). Current safety recommendations and housing codes for single family homes and mobile homes need to be amended to decrease the impact of future tornadoes on human health.

NASA's Participation in the AVE-SESAME ‘79 Program

NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) participated with its AVE (Atmospheric Variability Experiment) in a large interagency mesoscale and severe storms experiment identified herein as AVE-SESAME ‘79 (Atmospheric Variability Experiment-Severe Environmental Storms and Mesoscale Experiment 1979). A primary objective of NASA was to support an effort to acquire carefully edited sets of rawinsonde data during selected severe weather events for use in correlative and diagnostic studies with satellite and radar data obtained at approximately the same times. Data were acquired during six individual 24 h experiments on both the regional and storm scales over a network in the central United States that utilized approximately 20 supplemental rawinsonde sites meshed among 23 standard National Weather Service sites. Included among the six experiments are data obtained between 1200 GMT on 10 April and 1200 GMT on 11 April, encompassing the formation and development period for the tornado-producing systems that devastated Wichita Falls, Tex., and other sections of Oklahoma and Texas. The other dates for which data sets are available are 19–20 and 25–26 April, 9–10 and 20–21 May, and 7–8 June 1979.

William Maurice Ewing, 12 May 1906 - 4 May 1974

William Maurice Ewing was born on 12 May 1906 in Lockney, a town of about 1200 inhabitants in the Texas panhandle. When he grew up he rarely used the name William and was always known as Maurice. His father’s parents came from Kentucky, which they left after the defeat of the South in the Civil War. His mother’s family came to Texas from Illinois and Arkansas. Both families were among the earliest settlers along the edge of the high plains of northern Texas. His father Floyd Ford Ewing was a gentle, handsome, intellectual man with a liking for literature and music, whom fate had cast in the unsuitable roles of cowboy, dryland farmer and dealer in hardware and farm implements. He is spoken of with great affection by all who knew him;he was a talented violinist and also enjoyed fiddling in the Southern style with the instrument on his knee. His mother (born Hope Hamilton) was a small energetic woman. She married when she was 19 and her husband 22; they started their married life with a homesteading venture in New Mexico. The story of the ensuing disasters has been told with great skill and sympathy by Maurice’s brother, Floyd, who was a professor of history at Wichita Falls, Texas (F. Ewing 1963). In 1904 they returned to Texas. Maurice was the fourth of ten children. The three oldest had died very young in New Mexico so that he grew up as the eldest of seven children. Mrs Ewing was determined that her children should receive a good education and should have a wider choice of careers than was to be found in a small west Texas town. In fact all but one, the eldest daughter Ethel, went to university and had professional or academic careers. Ethel married very young and for many years was a most successful teacher of the piano in Tulia, Texas.

A New Pleistocene Local Fauna from Motley County, Texas

In the late fall of 1958, Mr. Gene Wilson of Ringgold, Texas, brought to Midwestern University some teeth of an extinct camel that he had found in the bed of a small arroyo tributary to Quitaque Creek, in the northeastern corner of Motley County. This locality is at the base of the Texas Panhandle, approximately 135 miles west of Wichita Falls. Mr. Wilson showed me where he had found the teeth, and much of the skull of the camel was recovered. On subsequent visits to the area additional vertebrate fossils were found, and a ton of gray clay matrix was washed and sorted (Hibbard, 1949) to recover the fossils of mollusks and small vertebrates. An Unusual Ungulate Jaw from the Pliocene of Texas

Recent excavations at the Coffee Ranch quarry, nine miles north of Miami, Hemphill County, Texas, have yielded a quantity of fossil bones of early-middle Pliocene age. This site is the locality 20 of Reed and Longnecker (1932) and probably has furnished the best known sample of the Hemphillian fauna (see Matthew and Stirton, 1930a, 1930b, Burt, 1931, Matthew, 1932). Where worked by Midwestern University, there is a layer of volcanic ash more than 6 feet in thicknss, and dirctly under the ash bed a layer of glauconitic clay varying from one to four feet in depth. Beneath the clay bed is an unconsolidated greenish sand, six feet or more in thickness and with numerous pockets rich in fossil bones. Past workers seem to have devoted most attention to the greenish sand layer. The clay bed contains numerous fragments of fossil bones, mostly greatly broken and rarely more than a fraction of an inch in diameter. Among the fragments of larger bones are some teeth and jaw fragments of insectivors, rabbits, rodents and small carnivors, with an occasional tooth or jaw of a larger mammal. Through the kindness of the Hardin Foundation of Wichita Falls, Texas, and the Midwestern University Faculty Research Committee, funds were made available to permit the quarrying and washing of the clay, to recover the remains of small mammals present. In the course of quarrying operations, a most unusual ungulate lower jaw was discovered. The incisors and the extreme anterior tip of the jaw are missing, as is the ramus posterior to the last molar. The cheek-tooth dention, however, is complete. The teeth had all been broken off just above the roots, and were firmly encased in clay matrix. The remainder of the jaw was collected in another large piece of clay. The breaks were clean and the teeth fitted closely to the broken roots. The jaw is unusual in the presence of alveoli for seven cheekteeth. As exposed when first discovered, the roots showed clearly and all four premolars have double roots. In the laboratory, the jaw was sketched before the teeth were restored (fig. 1).

Yellow Fever Eradication

ABSTRACT To the Editor:— I wish to draw your attention to an error in The Journal (178:32 [Nov. 25] 1961), in the article entitled PAHO Tallies Smallpox, Urges Aedes aegypti Eradication. It states that Eight U.S. States Are Still On List Of Infested Areas.In the most recent edition of the International Sanitary Regulations, Geneva, page 98, under the heading of Yellow Fever Receptive Areas on 1 May 1961, 10 states are listed under the United States of America. These are: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Hawaii, and that part of Texas east of a line extending from Del Rio through Wichita Falls and including those cities.

Two Species of Bison Contemporaneous in Early Recent Deposits in Texas

Remains of an extinct bison, presumably Bison antiquus, were found at Wichita Falls, Texas, along with bones of small bison, referred to the modern buffalo. The time range of the genus Bison in North America is discussed. Other bones found include those of turtle, prairie dog, coyote, antelope, and whitetailed deer. Typical Pleistocene species are not represented, and the deposit is considered to be of early Recent age. For many years most of the sand and gravel used in commercial construction near Wichita Falls, Texas, has been obtained from Sangamon-age terraces of the Big Wichita River, both east and west of the city. In August, 1958, the Northwest Materials Company of Iowa Park, Texas, made a series of test borings in a lower, Recent, terrace, just west of Wichita Falls, and as a result of these tests opened a commercial quarry. The owners of the company, Mr. John W. Clapp, John W. Clapp, Jr., and L. B. Clapp, and their workmen, especially Mr. Clay Davis, have been most cooperative in saving bones of animals uncovered in their operations in the Sangamon terrace near Iowa Park. They were equally diligent in preserving the numerous bones found in the new quarry in the lower terrace. I wish to express my thanks to these men for their many courtesies. In the lower terrace the quarrying operations extended through two distinct types of deposits. The superficial materials consisted of a silty, reddish sand, without obvious bedding except for occasional pebble bands that can rarely be followed more than a few feet. The sand appears to be wind-deposited, at least in large part. The reddish sand maintains a rather uniform depth of about seven feet. Bones found in the upper part of the reddish sand are usually fibrous in appearance, etched by humic acid, and give off a strong odor of burned protein and a heavy smoke when heated to incandescence. Deeper in the reddish sand, many bones are well preserved but usually have a reddish stain. When heated to incandescence they too give off a strong odor and heavy smoke. Developments in North-Central and West-Central Texas, 1938

New developments and discoveries in north-central Texas during 1938 have materially increased the importance of the Strawn formations as major producing zones in the north-central district and have increased the scope of the Canyon and Cisco in the west-central. The most important Strawn discovery in the north-central district was the Hull-Silk pool in north Archer County. Of smaller proportion, but highly significant, was the Adams Oil Company Moer No. 1 well near the town of Scotland which was completed from the Finley zone (one of the Hull-Silk pool zones) for approximately 115 barrels per day pumping. Important extensions were made east and west of the K.M.A. field. The producing area was increased from about 10,000 acres in 1937 to 32,000 acres in 1938. This field, which was discovered in 1931 and had only five producing wells in 1935, began the year with 89 producers and ended with 890. Sinclair-Prairie opened a new pool in the Delaware Bend area of Cooke County with its Best No. 1, and Rogers and Rogers another near the town of Nocona, Montague County, with the completion of their No. 1 Burnett. Both of these are lower Strawn in age. Madden and Goldsmith and King Oil opened a new Canyon pool (Chalk Hill zone) in the Holliday district, Archer and Wichita counties. New Canyon production in Wilbarger County was also developed in the Castlebury pool from the Landreth limestone. A small Bend pool was opened by Continental and Petroleum Producers on the State Asylum Lands on the outskirts of the town of Wichita Falls. Important extensions to the James and Sims pools in southeast Young County, discoveries by Anzac Oil Company and R. V. Tidwell in southwest Young and the Wray pool in central Young served to keep interest active in the Bend areas of Young, Jack, and Throckmorton counties. A new feature of this area is the discovery of commercial Mississippian production in south Young County. In the west-central district, two new pools, Irvin and Chittenden, were discovered in western Jones County in the Swastika sand underlying the Gunsight limestone, and new, deeper production was found in this zone in the Noodle Creek field. In eastern Jones County the Avoca pool, producing from the lower Canyon limestone (Avoca pay), was extensively developed. A new pool, the Griffin, was discovered in this same zone, and three new pools, Steffens, Fox, and Akard were discovered in shallower Cisco zones. Although about the same number of wells were drilled in 1938 as in 1937, practically double the number of new pools and important extensions were reported. This was the result of more intensive application of geological and geophysical methods of exploration. In spite of the larger amount of new production in 1938, the total production for the year was slightly less than in 1937. The Red Beds between Wichita Falls, Texas, and Las Vegas, New Mexico, in Relation to their Vertebrate Fauna

During the summer of 1912 the author traveled by wagon from the north line of Oklahoma, south along the contact of the Pennsylvanian limestones and the Red Beds, to near Purcell and then west to the Wichita Mountains; from there the party turned south to Wichita Falls, Texas, and then west across the Staked Plains and eastern New Mexico to Las Vegas. It is the portion of the trip from Wichita Falls to Las Vegas that is described in this paper. Active work during recent years has resulted in abundant collections from the Permian or Permo-Carboniferous beds of Texas
