Application and Expression of White Painting in Yuan Blue and White Ceramic Painting

Yuan blue and white ceramics, as a shining pearl in the treasure house of Chinese ceramic art, is famous for its unique artistic style and exquisite craft technology. In the painting of blue and white ceramics in the Yuan dynasty, the use of white painting techniques is particularly eye-catching. The white painting, with its simple and bright lines, Outlines the outline and verve of the image, adding a different artistic charm to the picture of the Yuan blue and white ceramics. This paper aims to deeply explore the application and performance of white painting in Yuan blue and white ceramic painting, through a detailed analysis of the characteristics of white painting technique and its specific application in Yuan blue and white ceramic painting style, reveal the richness and improvement of white painting style. At the same time, this paper will also discuss the artistic value and aesthetic significance of the white painting in the Yuan blue and white ceramics, in order to provide a new artistic perspective for readers to appreciate the unique charm of the Yuan blue and white ceramics.

A Study on the Materials Used in Ancient Wooden Architectural Paintings at DaZhong Gate in Confucius Temple, Qufu, Shandong, China.

This study analyzes the pigments and binders used in the painted wooden structure of DaZhong Gate in the Confucius Temple in Qufu, Shandong Province, China. Five samples were collected from the building and analyzed using techniques such as polarized light microscopy (PLM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), micro-Raman spectroscopy (m-RS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The findings reveal that the red, yellow, green, and blue pigments are identified as lead red, lead chromate yellow, emerald green, and ultramarine, respectively. The white pigment is determined to be a combination of chalk and lead white or anglesite. Considering the production period of the yellow and green pigments, it is inferred that architectural paintings underwent restoration or repainting during the late Qing Dynasty. The analysis of the binder in the pigment using pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) reveals that the binder employed is a protein-based glue. Additionally, the detected presence of Heat-bodied tung oil suggests a potential connection to traditional Chinese painting techniques on wooden surfaces. This discovery not only contributes to the historical research of the Confucius Temple but also provides crucial data for the conservation and restoration efforts of this culturally significant heritage site.

Technological research of Adalbert Erdelyi’s still life of the post-Budapest period

The study’s relevance lies in obtaining valuable information about Adalbert Erdelyi’s painting, which enhances the understanding of his artwork, supports efforts at accurate attribution, and enriches the study of art history. The purpose of this study was to characterise artist’s painting materials and technique of the post-Budapest period and introduce obtained results into scientific circulation. The research methodology was based on an integrated general scientific approach that combines theoretical and empirical methods, including art-critic and comparative analyses as well as optical and physicochemical methods. X-ray fluorescence analysis and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy were used to determine the artist’s pigment palette. Until now, only a few works of Adalbert Erdelyi’s early creative stage have been known and introduced into scientific circulation. A comprehensive study of Adalbert Erdelyi’s still life was carried out. The stylistic and technological features of the painting that were inherent in the post-Budapest period were established. It has been shown that cardboard made from a mixture of rag fibers and wood pulp was used as the painting support. The type of cardboard gluing and fillers were determined. The still life was painted wet-on-wet on the unprimed support without applying underdrawings. The analysis of the organic binder has shown that the painting was executed in the oil painting technique. Pure lead white was identified in white paints. Lead white with an admixture of zinc white, a mixture of lead white and zinc white, chrome yellow (lead chromate), vermillion, alizarin crimson, ocher, Emerald green (copper acetoarsenite), and Prussian blue were found in the paint layer. The identified pigments and a comparative analysis of oil polymerisation in lead white paint allowed us to confirm that the painting was created in 1918. It is shown that the artistic and style characteristics of the painting correspond to Adalbert Erdelyi’s post-Budapest period. Thus, “Still Life with Glasses on a Tray” can be considered the first known image of glasses with water in the artist’s creative heritage. The results of carried out research are an important informative source in the analysis of the artist’s early works and can be useful for art historians a nd curators of museum collections

Is paper bag plastic-free, without plastic in colourful logo area?

The concern over plastic contamination has led to bans on plastic shopping bags, often replaced by paper ones. However, logos painted or printed on paper bags may still contain plastics, as investigated herein. In some logos, for example, white pigment of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles are bound with plastic binder onto the cellulose surface of the paper. This hybrid of plastic and nanoparticle is examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM) to characterise morphology physically, and Raman imaging to identify and visualise them chemically. Raman imaging scans the sample to separate images and identify not only plastic but also the co-formulated pigment. The scan generates a hyperspectral matrix containing hundreds to thousands of spectra, and subsequent analysis can enhance the signal-to-noise ratio. Decoding the hyperspectral matrix using chemometrics like principal component analysis (PCA) can effectively map plastic and pigment separately with increased certainty. The image can be further refined through 3-dimensional surface fitting for deconvolution, providing direct visualisation of the plastic-nanoparticle hybrid at a density of approximately 7.3 million particles per square millimetre. Overall, caution should be exercised when using paper bags, as they may not be entirely free of plastics. Raman imaging proves to be an effective method for identifying and visualising complex components, including plastics and nanoparticles. Environmental ImplicationThe concern over plastic contamination has led to bans on plastic shopping bags, replaced by paper alternatives. However, some logos on paper bags may still contain plastics, which is investigated to confirm the presence of plastic-nanoparticle hybrid using SEM and Raman imaging. By employing decoding algorithms such as PCA to separately map plastic and pigment, and utilising 3D surface fitting to deconvolute the image, the hybrid plastic-nanoparticle is estimated at a density of approximately 7.3 million particles per square millimetre. It's important to exercise caution and not assume these items are plastic-free. This aspect of plastics may have been overlooked as another potential source of contamination.

The Morphological and Thermal Characteristics of Hollow-Glass-Microsphere-Coated Phase Change Material–Cow Pie Embedded Recycled Plastic Tiles for Cool Roofs

This study addresses the global plastic waste crisis and the urban heat island effect by developing an innovative solution: recycled plastic roof tiles embedded with phase change material (PCM) and coated with hollow-glass-microsphere-based white paint. The samples were fabricated with cow pie fibers, OM37 and OM42 PCM materials with different wt./vol. values, i.e., 15/50, 20/50, 25/50, 30/50 ratios. The fabricated tiles were coated with hollow glass microspheres to provide a reflective layer. The tiles’ effectiveness was evaluated through morphological examination and thermal analysis. The SEM analysis revealed an excellent bonding ability for the PCM blend, i.e., OM37 and OM42 at a 20/50 ratio (wt./vol.) with cow pie fibers. Adding cow pie fibers to the PCM shifted the melting points of OM37 and OM42, indicating an increased heat storage capacity in both blends. The thermal conductivity results revealed decreased thermal conductivity with an increased cow pie fiber percentage. The recycled plastic roof tile of the PCM composite at a 20/50 (wt./vol.) ratio showed good thermal properties. Upon testing in real-time conditions in a physical setup, the roof tiles showed a temperature reduction of 8 °C from outdoors to indoors during the peak of summer. In winter, cozy temperatures were maintained indoors due to the heat regulation from the roof.

Technical note: Visual, rapid, scintillation point dosimetry for in vivo MV photon beam radiotherapy treatments.

While careful planning and pre-treatment checks are performed to ensure patient safety during external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), inevitable daily variations mean that in vivo dosimetry (IVD) is the only way to attain the true delivered dose. Several countries outside the US require daily IVD for quality assurance. However, elsewhere, the manual labor and time considerations of traditional in vivo dosimeters may be preventing frequent use of IVD in the clinic. This study expands upon previous research using plastic scintillator discs for optical dosimetry for electron therapy treatments. We present the characterization of scintillator discs for in vivo x-ray dosimetry and describe additional considerations due to geometric complexities. Plastic scintillator discs were coated with reflective white paint on all sides but the front surface. An anti-reflective, matte coating was applied to the transparent face to minimize specular reflection. A time-gated iCMOS camera imaged the discs under various irradiation conditions. In post-processing, background-subtracted images of the scintillators were fit with Gaussian-convolved ellipses to extract several parameters, including integral output, and observation angle. Dose linearity and x-ray energy independence were observed, consistent with ideal characteristics for a dosimeter. Dose measurements exhibited less than 5% variation for incident beam angles between 0° and 75° at the anterior surface and 0-60 at the posterior surface for exit beam dosimetry. Varying the angle between the disc surface and the camera lens did not impact the integral output for the same dose up to 55°. Past this point, up to 75°, there is a sharp falloff in response; however, a correction can be used based on the detected width of the disc. The reproducibility of the integral output for a single disc is 2%, and combined with variations from the gantry angle, we report the accuracy of the proposed scintillator disc dosimeters as ±5.4%. Plastic scintillator discs have characteristics that are well-suited for in vivo optical dosimetry for x-ray radiotherapy treatments. Unlike typical point dosimeters, there is no inherent readout time delay, and an optical recording of the measurement is saved after treatment for future reference. While several factors influence the integral output for the same dose, they have been quantified here and may be corrected in post-processing.

Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii, the causative agent of Thai jackfruit’s bronzing disease and its possible host range in Vietnam

The bronzing disease of Thai jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.) has recently appeared in Vietnam, causing a significant loss for farmers, but its control method is still restricted. In this study, we identified pathogens based on morphological and molecular characterizations. A total of 25 bacterial isolates were isolated from diseased samples. The bacterium produces white or yellow pigment in culture, is gram-negative, slightly pleomorphic, non-motile, facultatively anaerobic, short-rod, and catalase-positive. It hydrolyzes gelatin and starch but not tween 80, and produces acid from glucose, sucrose, and lactose. The bacterium does not produce indole and does not produce hypersensitivity to tobacco. The results of sequencing of the encoded region of synthesis of capsular polysaccharide (cpsD) and pathogenicity-related genes HrpS confirmed that the causative agent is Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii. The pathogen’s possible host range could be traditional jackfruit varieties, fruits, and crops such as durian, longan, mango, tomatoes, broccoli, pumpkin, cucumber, corn, rice, sweet potatoes, water spinach, peanuts, and green beans. The P. stewartii subsp. stewartii could enter the host plant cell through open wounds or natural openings such as stomata. The results confirmed the presence of P. stewartii subsp. stewartii in Vietnam and suggest that the jackfruit tree should not be planted in plantations with these crops to prevent cross-contamination and the spread of pathogens.

Fracture toughness of aged oil paints

The fracture toughness in opening mode GIc for selected oil paints from Mecklenburg's Paint Reference Collection after approximately 30 years of natural ageing was determined using the procedure adopted from the ASTM D5528–13 standard in which double cantilever beam specimens are split in tensile tests. The careful reglueing procedure allowed multiple fracturing tests to be carried out that not only improved statistics of the measurements but also provided insight into the variation of the fracture toughness across the paint film observed for some paints. The latter was due to pigment sedimentation or chemical change of the oil binder as a result of the easier access of oxygen from the side open to the air. For the lead white paint, used over centuries both in paint films and oil grounds, the GIc values more than doubled from 18 to 39 J/m2 for three consecutive cracks formed at an increasing distance from one side of the paint film. The study demonstrated that fracture toughness corresponding to the first crack formation in aged oil paints ranged between 10 and 40 J/m2, relatively low values compared to the animal glue-based ground in paintings. In consequence, oil paints are more vulnerable to crack initiation and growth induced by tensile stress than the ground layer. The measurements filled the gap in the knowledge required for the analysis of fracturing or delamination processes in paintings.

Assessment of TiO2 (nano)particles migration from food packaging materials to food simulants by single particle ICP-MS/MS using a high efficiency sample introduction system

TiO2 is the most widely used white pigment in plastics and food packaging industry, thus the question of its migration towards food and hence the impact on consumers is raised. Since recent research indicate its potential toxicity, it is necessary to study TiO2 contamination as a consequence of food storage. For this purpose, plastic containers from commercially-available dairy products and custom-made TiO2-spiked polypropylene materials were put in contact with 50% (v/v) ethanol and 3% (w/v) acetic acid, which were used here as food simulants. The migration assays were carried out under standard contact conditions of packaging use (as recommended by Commission Regulation (EU) N° 10/2011 for food contact migration testing), and under conditions of extreme mechanical degradation of the packaging. The TiO2 (nano)particles released in the food simulants were analysed by single particle inductively coupled plasma-tandem mass spectrometry in mass-shift mode and using a high efficiency sample introduction system (APEX™ Ω) to avoid matrix effects from food simulants. For the dairy product containers and for the spiked polypropylene, results showed release of TiO2 particles of rather large sizes (average size: 164 and 175 nm, respectively) under mechanical degradation conditions, i.e. when the polymeric structure is damaged. The highest amounts of TiO2 were observed in 50% ethanol after 10 days of storage at 50 °C (0.62 ng cm−2) for the dairy product containers and after 1 day of storage at 50 °C (0.68 ng cm−2) for the spiked polypropylene. However, the level of Ti released in particle form was very small compared to the total Ti content in the packaging and far below the acceptable migration limits set by European legislation. Release under standard contact conditions of use of the container was not measurable, thus the migration of TiO2 particles from this packaging to dairy products among storage is expected to be negligible.

Selective damage induced by pigment-medium interactions in a Neoplasticist oil canvas painting: Composition dans le cône avec couleur orange by G. Vantongerloo (1929)

This research focuses on the study of pigment-medium interactions in the film forming, ageing and degradation mechanisms of modern white oil paints observed in the Neoplasticist painting Composition dans le cône avec couleur orange by G. Vantongerloo (1929), conserved in the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern (IVAM). The observation of selective vertical cracks and the significant presence of protrusions in the painting suggested that the observed degradation phenomena were specific to the coloured area. To understand the composition of pigments governing the film formation processes and later degradation phenomena in the oil paint films, a hybrid experimental approach was taken, aimed at understanding the physical, chemical and mechanical mechanisms involved. For this purpose, digital portable microscopy and multiband imaging analyses were carried out. Furthermore, the technical study involved the use of micro-invasive analysis such as μ-Raman, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and GC–MS analysis for a more comprehensive understanding of the nature of the binding media and products resulting from the auto-oxidation, film-forming, hydrolysis, and degradation processes of the lipidic binding media. The results obtained suggest that on-going degradation phenomena are closely linked to the chemical interaction between pigment and binding medium.

Tween 80-mediated size-controlled self-assembly of resistant starch particle: A green and biodegradable white pigment for food applications

Titanium dioxide (E171) is a widely used food additive white pigment. However, its potential toxicity necessitates an urgent quest for alternative substances. In this study, we present the Tween 80-mediated size-controlled self-assembly of well-defined resistant starch particles (TRSP) as a promising alternative white pigment. The self-assembly process yields TRSP with a highly ordered structure, exhibiting enhanced thermal stability compared to native starch. These particles have optimal reflectance and whiteness when the particle size reaches approximately 1 μm, leading to notable whiteness values of 76.3 and 89.4 for simulated hard and jelly candies, respectively. In vitro cytocompatibility assays confirm the excellent biocompatibility of TRSP. In vitro digestion assays demonstrate the presence of high-level resistant starch in TRSP, highlighting their potential benefits for gut health. Thus, TRSP not only serve as a low-calorie pigment alternative to food-grade TiO2, but they also function as potential health-beneficial ingredients in a variety of food applications.

A calcined aluminum silicate micro-based pigment as titanium dioxide replacement in waterborne coatings

This research is focused on evaluation of kaolin (Calcined Aluminum Silicate) micro-based pigment or filler that can substitute titanium dioxide in waterborne paints. Calcined aluminum silicate has shown ability for partial replacement of titanium dioxide by fractionally and runnability. Titanium dioxide is very essential white pigment that has highest hiding power in waterborne coatings. But titanium dioxide is most expensive pigment. Our purpose was to find inexpensive pigment for replacement of titanium dioxide that does not affect properties of waterborne coatings but reduce cost of titanium dioxide in paint formulation. Fillers or calcined aluminum silicate has effect on properties of coatings like gloss, textures, viscosity, emulsion and tinting or coloring strength of paint. Our research main focus was that these properties of paint will not be affected by replacement of TiO2. To evaluate new pigment five samples are prepared in laboratory using high speed disperser. These samples were prepared at room temperature with same period of time in mixer. One sample is prepared as standard with no replacement of TiO2, other four sample were prepared with TiO2 replacement about 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% in coatings. Additives, binder and fillers were added according to paint basic formulation. Tests includes gloss, appearance, opacity, density, viscosity, smoothness, scrub resistance and whiteness or brightness. Results of these samples show that calcined aluminum silicate has potential to replace titanium dioxide in paint. The rheological, optical, mechanical and weathering properties were studied. Other properties like gloss, opacity, density, viscosity, brightness, scrub resistance, brushability, light fastness and reflectivity values were in range. In our study it is shown that titanium dioxide can be replaced from 5% to 20% in waterborne coatings without any effect on properties of paint. Replacement of titanium dioxide give better quality and economically favorable.

Effect of chronic prenatal exposure to the food additive titanium dioxide E171 on respiratory activity in newborn mice.

Nanoparticles (NPs) possess unique properties that make their use valuable in all industries. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) NPs are extensively used as a white pigment in food (labeled under the European number E171) and personal care products, which creates a significant potential for chronic consumer exposure. Concerns about the potential toxic effects of TiO2 NPs have arisen, particularly in vulnerable populations, including pregnant women and infants. Recently, human materno-fetal transfer of E171 was demonstrated, and simultaneously, we reported that chronic prenatal exposure to reference P25 TiO2 NPs was found to alter the developing respiratory neural networks. In this study, using whole body plethysmography from postnatal day (P) 0 to P7, we assessed the respiratory function of newborn mice born to mothers fed with E171 during pregnancy. We also evaluated the potential alterations to respiratory centers by using brainstem-spinal cord electrophysiological recordings from P0 to P6. Our study reveals that E171-prenatally exposed animals displayed an abnormally elevated breathing rate from P3 onwards. From P5 to P6, the respiratory-related burst frequency generated by the isolated brainstem-spinal cord preparations was significantly higher in E171-exposed animals than in non-exposed animals. These findings demonstrate prenatal toxicity of E171 to the developing respiratory function and may contribute to policy-making regarding the use of TiO2 NPs.

Solar Spectrum Reflectometer Measurements on Profiled and Small Samples: Design and Testing of Adapters

AbstractTesting solar reflective building materials is mainly performed in laboratories using Solar Spectrum Reflectometer (SSR) or spectrophotometry. To obtain aged materials values, after exposing materials in test farms for natural ageing or applying ASTM-D7897, treated samples shall be tested again using SSR. On-site measurements of new and aged surfaces is allowed using pyranometers or albedometers, which present issues caused both by high-pitched roof and by solar and sky requirements in several locations such as at southern and middle Europe latitudes, where clay tiles are a typical coverage of roof surfaces. The use of battery-powered SSR offsite could be a solution to obtain reliable measurements in every climate, lighting, and slope condition. However, the shape of roof surfaces remains an issue since most of the tiles are characterized by elaborated morphologies that cannot fit the measurement head of the SSR. In this study, two sets of cylindrical adapters for SSR, made via Fused Deposition Modeling and coated with solar reflective white diffuse paint or specular reflective coating were produced and tested to overcome this problem. The adapters were attached to the top of the measurement head and measurements were performed according to ASTM-C1549. These adapters were tested with samples characterized by ASTM-C1549, analyzing the output from all 6 detectors of SSR, and by spectrophotometry according to ASTM-E903, using both AM1GH and ASTM E891-87 irradiance spectra. Aluminum-coated adapters proved ideal due to non-impact on measurements. Solar reflectance showed strong linear correlation for 30–50 mm adapter lengths, indicating minimal signal damping. They will allow testing most of the samples that cannot be tested with standard methods, especially aged ones, without altering their surface.

Analysis of Pigments Unearthed from the Yungang Grottoes Archaeological Excavations

The Yungang Grottoes, excavated during the 5th to 6th centuries AD, stand as a pinnacle of Buddhist sculpture, representing a precious world cultural heritage. Since their excavation, the grottoes have undergone multiple phases of painting, with a significant amount of pigment still present on the surfaces of the stone carvings. Since the 1990s, two large-scale archaeological excavations have been conducted on both the front ground and the summit of Yungang Grottoes. During these excavations, various artifacts with accompanying pigments were unearthed, encompassing stone carvings, grinding tools, architectural components, fragments of murals, and remnants of clay sculptures, spanning the historical periods of the Northern Wei, Liao-Jin, and Ming-Qing dynasties. Using portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, portable microscopy, polarizing microscopy, scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and confocal Raman microscopy, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of these painted elements. The investigation revealed the presence of hematite, vermilion, goethite, malachite, calcium carbonate, lead white, and ivory black pigments in the Northern Wei samples. The Liao-Jin samples exhibited hematite, while the Ming-Qing samples contained vermilion, minium, atacamite, lead white, and Prussian blue.

Amycolatopsis mongoliensis sp. nov., a novel actinobacterium with antifungal activity isolated from a coal mining site in Mongolia.

A novel filamentous actinobacterium designated strain 4-36T showing broad-spectrum antifungal activity was isolated from a coal mining site in Mongolia, and its taxonomic position was determined using polyphasic approach. Optimum growth occurred at 30 °C, pH 7.5 and in the absence of NaCl. Aerial and substrate mycelia were abundantly formed on agar media. The colour of aerial mycelium was white and diffusible pigments were not formed. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain 4-36T formed a distinct clade within the genus Amycolatopsis. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity showed that the strain was mostly related to Amycolatopsis lexingtonensis DSM 44544T and Amycolatopsis rifamycinica DSM 46095T with 99.3 % sequence similarity. However, the highest digital DNA-DNA hybridization value to closest species was 44.1 %, and the highest average nucleotide identity value was 90.2 %, both of which were well below the species delineation thresholds. Chemotaxonomic properties were typical of the genus Amycolatopsis, as the major fatty acids were C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and C16 : 0, the cell-wall diamino acid was meso-diaminopimelic acid, the quinone was MK-9(H4), and the main polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmethanolamine and phosphatidylethanolamine. The in silico prediction of chemotaxonomic markers was also carried out by phylogenetic analysis. The genome mining for biosynthetic gene clusters of secondary metabolites in strain 4-36T revealed the presence of 34 gene clusters involved in the production of polyketide synthase, nonribosomal peptide synthetase, ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptide, lanthipeptide, terpenes, siderophore and many other unknown clusters. Strain 4-36T showed broad antifungal activity against several filamentous fungi. The phenotypic, biochemical and chemotaxonomic properties indicated that the strain could be clearly distinguished from other species of Amycolatopsis, and thus the name Amycolatopsis mongoliensis sp. nov. is proposed accordingly (type strain, 4-36T=KCTC 39526T=JCM 30565T).

An analytical survey of zinc white historical and modern artists’ materials

This study is the first systematic survey of a large corpus of zinc white (ZnO) artists’ materials. Zinc white is a white pigment developed within the wave of 19th-century technological developments in the paint industry. The composition, particle morphology and size, and luminescence of 49 zinc white samples from artists’ materials were characterized, including three references of known synthesis methods (indirect and direct) and synthesized by the authors (ZnO nanosmoke). The corpus included historical and modern zinc white pigment powders and paint materials from the leading European and American color manufacturers. The study aims to characterize and evaluate the variability of the properties of zinc white and its paint formulations. The reference materials presented properties in agreement with the literature: indirect ZnO exhibited submicron prismoidal blue-luminescent particles of higher purity than direct ZnO, which had larger acicular green-luminescent particles. ZnO nanosmoke presented acicular (tetrapod-like) blue/green-luminescent nanoparticles. Composition, particle morphology, size, and documentary sources suggested a production via the indirect method for the analyzed corpus. However, the luminescence behavior was more complex to interpret. The fundamental emission of ZnO was not always detected, even in pure ZnO powders. Three trends were identified: smaller ZnO particles for the most recent samples; green luminescence connected to larger particle size; fewer trace elements, and of the same type (i.e., lead, sulfur) for historical materials. Another interesting finding was the detection of hydrozincite in some powders, likely a degradation product of ZnO. In terms of methodology, cathodoluminescence proved a valuable tool for pigment identification. The study provides a database of zinc white references for pigment and artwork analysis.

Weathering resistance of plant fiber‐reinforced high‐density polyethylene matrix composites: Effect of different pigments

AbstractThe effects of iron oxide red pigment, organic red 254 pigment, titanium white pigment, and carbon black pigment on the properties of wood fiber (WF)reinforced high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) composites under outdoor aging conditions were investigated. The results indicate the addition of pigments in the outdoor aging process has a certain physical protection effect on the composites, effectively preventing the damage of ultraviolet rays on the WF/HDPE composites, and the mechanical experiments show that the pigments protect the composites more obviously in the first 3 months. Among them, the carbon black pigment had the best color‐fixing effect on the composites, with the ∆E* value is only 4.1, and the protective effect on the composites was relatively good due to its special structure. The quality change also verified again that the carbon black pigment has a certain protective effect on the plant fiber composites in the pre‐aging period outdoors, in which the mass of the composites with added carbon black pigment increased by 0.14%. Comprehensively, it shows that the addition of pigment cannot completely prevent the photo‐oxidation reaction of the composites from occurring, but it can effectively slow down the aging process of the composites and prolong the service life.Highlights WF/HDPE‐modified composites were prepared by injection molding. The surface color of composites with pigment additions was analyzed. The addition of pigments effectively protects the composites. Mechanical and thermal properties have also been investigated.

Spectroscopic Study of White Pigments in the Decoration of Neolithic Pottery in the Region of the Thracian Valley, Bulgaria

Throughout history, ceramics have been the most abundant artifacts in archaeological discoveries. Within the Neolithic period in present-day Bulgaria, skilled artisans applied additional materials to decorate their pottery, evolving in composition and application techniques such as painting or incrustation. This study is focused on the investigation of white pigments used in decorating Early and Late Neolithic pottery from Madzherito, Kaloyanovets, and Hadzhidimitrovo—archaeological sites located in the Thracian Valley, Central South Bulgaria, affiliated with the cultural groups of Karanovo I and IV. Thirteen ceramic sherds were investigated through archaeometric techniques, including Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflection mode (ATR-FTIR) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). LIBS data underwent further analysis using principal component analysis (PCA). The results revealed that calcite, enriched with diverse fillers like quartz, clays, feldspars, and metal oxides, was the primary raw material for white decoration throughout the entire period. Talc emerged as an addition to calcite in the paint of two Early Neolithic sherds. The presence of hydroxyapatite and kaolinite in Late Neolithic pottery was also observed. The inclusion of supplementary ingredients in the primary formula for crafting white decorations signifies either the emergence of novel trends in manufacturing techniques or serves as evidence of vessels imported from adjacent territories.

Efisiensi Energi Berkelanjutan: Strategi Desain dan Perhitungan Optimalisasi Efisiensi Energi pada Selubung Bangunan

Global warming is an increase in the temperature of the Earth's surface over the last few decades. Building energy consumption is the number two contributor to global warming. About 5-13% of the energy consumed during construction and the remaining 87-95% occur during the lifetime of a building, mainly for heating, cooling, and lighting purposes. This requires the selection of building materials that are certified green or environmentally friendly to help reduce energy consumption. The aim of this study is to evaluate the energy efficiency of a variety of designs of the building cover best in the glass protector as a building wall material. The research method uses comparative research that involves comparing energy efficiency between 4 different designs and materials with the calculation of OTTV on the facade of the building. Overal Thermal Transfer Value (OTTV) is a design parameter used to measure the level of energy efficiency of a building in reducing the heat from sunlight entering through walls and roofs. The results of the study showed massive walls with a 0.8 m high parapet and 1.2 m sharpening (Aluminum 4 mm with semi-flash white paint + 30 mm airspace + 150 mm precast concrete), along with window walls using the Stopray Vision 52 T (8 mm (#2) +12 mm Anti-Shatter+6 mm Clear Glass) and horizontal shading as high as 0.4 m, as well as openings with a configuration of 8 mm (No2) + 12 mm anti-shatter + 6 mm Clear glass, showing that the Overall Thermal Transfer Value (OTTV) reached its peak with a 29% decrease from the standard value. It states the combination of these elements provides optimal thermal performance, minimizing overall heat transfer.
