White-collar unionization has been a subject of interest in recent years. Current discussion centers on the issue of organizing professionals, with particular emphasis on scientists and engineers because of mass layoffs, particularly in the defense industries. Predictions in trade magazines range from immediate unionization to an economic upturn that will remove the problem. This article attempts to take a step back and analyze the situation. It begins with a discussion of the professional and his peculiarities, his relationship to management, and an analysis of the management of technical industries. With this background a few of today's situations are investigated. Finally, some suggestions for management action are made; the key is action, not reaction.
