Mechanism of mass‐transfer enhancement in textiles by ultrasound

AbstractThe intensification of wet textile processes, such as cleaning and dyeing, by application of ultrasound is well known. In these processes, mass transfer in the interyarn and intrayarn pores of the textile is the basic physical phenomenon. The results of experiments on textile cleaning, based on basic principles of acoustics and cavitation, coupled with analysis of the surface and cross section of the ultrasound‐treated textile and high‐speed imaging of the cleaning process, are reported. It is revealed that transient cavitation in the vicinity of the textile surface, and not the ultrasound wave itself, is the physical mechanism responsible for the enhanced cleaning effect. Intense microconvection due to the transient bubble motion driven by ultrasound enhances fluid flow and, thus, mass transfer through the textile. © 2004 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 50: 58–64, 2004

INTENSIFICATION OF MASS TRANSFER IN WET TEXTILE PROCESSES BY POWER ULTRASOUND

Abstract In industrial textile pre-treatment and finishing processes, mass transfer and mass transport are often rate-limiting. As a result, these processes require a relatively long residence time, large amounts of water and chemicals, and are also energy-consuming. In most of these processes, diffusion and convection in the inter-yarn and intra-yarn pores of the fabric are the limiting mass transport mechanisms. Intensification of mass transport, preferentially in the intra yarn pores, is key to the improvement of the efficiency of wet textile processes. Power ultrasound is a promising technique for accelerating mass transport in textile materials. In this paper, the intensification of mass transfer in textiles under the influence of ultrasound on the basis of a total system approach is described. EMPA 101-test fabric was selected as a model for the cleaning process. This study focuses on two aspects, the mechanism of the ultrasound-assisted cleaning process and the effect of the presence of the cloth on the ultrasound wave field generated in a bath. It has been found that the dissolved gas content in the system plays a dominant role in the cleaning process. The cleaning effects observed are explained by two different mechanisms: small-amplitude acoustic bubble oscillations and micro-jets (resulting from the collapse of acoustic bubbles in the boundary layer between the fabric and the bulk fluid) that give rise to convective mass transfer in the intra-yarn pores. It has also been observed that the overall power consumption of the system varies with the position of the fabric in the acoustic field. This variation is explained on the basis of a model involving the specific flow resistance of the fabric and the physical properties of the standing waves.

Laundry process intensification by ultrasound

In domestic textile laundering processes, mass transfer and mass transport are often rate limiting. Therefore, these processes require a long processing time, large amounts of water and chemicals, and they are energy consuming. In most of these processes, diffusion and convection in the inter-yarn and intra-yarn pores of the fabric are limiting mass transport mechanisms. Intensification of mass transport, preferentially in the intra-yarn pores, is the key in the improvement of the efficiency of wet textile processes. Conventional methods of intensification of mass transport (e.g. operation at elevated temperatures) are not always feasible due to the undesired side effects such as fabric damage. Increasing the flow rate does not deliver the desired effect due to the multi-porous complex structure of textile materials. Van der Donck et al. [Tenside Surf. Det. 35 (1998) 119; 36 (1999) 222] reported that the deformation of yarns by placing a fabric in a pulsating flow or repeated mechanical elongation of the yarns improved mass transport. However, the additional mass transport caused by deformation is limited in practice. Power ultrasound is a promising technique to accelerate mass transport in textile materials. Several papers appeared in this field, which report an improvement in energy efficiency and processing time of the wet textile processes in the presence of ultrasound. In this paper, the different time and length scales are discussed in the intensification of the mass transport in laundry processes in the presence of ultrasound and compared with more conventional processes. It has been concluded that the characteristic mass transport rates in textiles can be increased by a factor of 6 applying ultrasound.

Progress in Supercritical Co2Dyeing

Supercritical fluids have special properties that could lead to substantial improvements when utilized as replacements for water in wet processing of textiles. These fluids have densities and solvating powers similar to liquid solvents combined with viscosity values and diffusion coefficients like those observed for gases. In particular, these properties make supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) one of the most beneficial and environmentally acceptable solvents used in manufacturing processes today. Therefore, it is anticipated that commercial textile processes using SC-CO2will have many advantages when compared to conventional aqueous processes.Succesful commercialization of SC-CO2processing will improve the economics of dyeing and other textile chemical processes by eliminating wastewater discharges, reducing energy consumption, eliminating drying, and reducing air emissions. As a result, the use of SC-CO2is expected to make textile processing more economical and environmentally friendly.Research groups throughout the world are investigating SC-CO2textile processing. Succesful pilot dyeing machines have been operated and even publicly exhibited within the past few years. Research focused to developing a commercial dyeing process for polyester yarn packages is in its sixth year within the College of Textiles at North Carolina State University. Process development has been accomplished using a single-package SC-CO2dyeing machine located in the Model Manufacturing Facility of the College. This paper provides an overview of the status of the research and discusses the technical and economic factors important to the successful commercialization of an SC-CO2polyester yarn package dyeing process.

Dynamic behaviour of dyeing machinery and computer simulation — some examples

A summary of two studies of different types of well‐known dyeing machinery is presented. Logical analysis and experimental studies of fluid flow in wet textile processes give a clear understanding of machine operation. This fundamental information combined with present knowledge of dye‐fibre chemistry then allows the operation and control to be simulated in ways not previously possible.

SOME RECENT PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES OF CONTINUOUS PROCESSING

The authors review their practical experiences of continuous processing, with particular reference to narrow fabrics, nylon hose, slubbing, and woven wool fabrics. Attention is drawn to certain essential aspects to be borne in mind when developing continuous methods of wet processing of textiles.
