Sir James Crichton Browne, 1840-1938

On 31 January 1938, Sir James Crichton-Browne died a few months after his 97th birthday. In him the Royal Society lost its oldest Fellow, both in age and in membership, for he was elected Fellow in 1883, Charles Darwin being one of his proposers. His father, Dr W. A. F. Browne, who was the first Medical Superintendent of the Crichton Royal Mental Hospital at Dumfries, was largely responsible for the high standard of care and treatment of the insane for which this institution has since been famous ; later he became Commissioner in Lunacy in Scotland. It was therefore not surprising that after qualifying in medicine in Edinburgh University at the age of 22, his son decided to devote himself to the study of mental disorders. After serving in junior posts in various county Mental Hospitals he was appointed in 1866 Medical Superintendent of the West Riding Asylum, at Wakefield, a post he held until 1875. It was here his most valuable researches and pioneering work was done.

Statistical Observations on General Paralysis

There is a fairly general opinion amongst those engaged in asylum work that the classical type of general paralysis is less frequently met with relatively than formerly. This may be due partly to an increased number of so-called atypical cases, and possibly also to cases now being diagnosed as general paralysis, either ante or post mortem, which were not formerly looked upon as such. With a view to finding out the frequency of the chief phenomena of the disease as it is now met with in asylum practice, the following data, both pathological and clinical, have been compiled. The cases examined were (1) all the male cases admitted to the West Riding Asylum, Wakefield, from January 1st, 1896, to December 31st, 1902; (2) all the male cases admitted to the London County Asylum, Horton, Epsom, from its opening in the early part of 1902 to March 31st, 1905; and (3) all the female deaths at Horton.

John Bywater Ward

Dr. Ward was a native of Leeds. He was the second son of Mr. William Sykes Ward, solicitor, of that city, and his wife Caroline, daughter of Mr. John Bywater, also of Leeds. In 1856 he entered the Leeds Grammar School, where he received the early part of his general education. On leaving the grammar school he became a student at the Leeds School of Medicine. He then entered at Caius College, Cambridge, as a Scholar, and graduated B.A. in 1867, taking a Second Class in Natural Science. He took the degree of M.B. in 1868, and became M.D. in 1872. He also held the diplomas of M.R.C.S.Eng., and L.S.A. His education being finished, Dr. Ward became one of the house surgeons to the Sheffield Infirmary, a post which he appears to have held for about two years. He then accepted a clinical clerkship at the West Riding Asylum under the directorship of Dr. (now Sir) James Crichton Browne. At this time he contributed to the West Riding Asylum Reports a paper on the “Hypodermic Injection of Morphia in the Treatment of Insanity.” He was next appointed Assistant Medical Officer to the Warwick County Asylum, under the late Dr. Parsey, as Medical Superintendent, and here he remained for four years.

The Specific Gravity of the Insane Brain

This paper is only intended to be a preliminary note upon the specific gravity of the brain in the insane, and contains the results of experiments upon thirty cases conducted at the West Riding Asylum, Wakefield, during the early part of this year. Over 1400 investigations have been made upon these brains, and as the inclusion of data from different parts of the country might cause scientific inaccuracies, it has been thought advisable to publish the present results separately, prior to the initiation of a further series of experiments.

An Analysis of 131 Male Criminal Lunatics admitted to the West Riding Asylum, Wakefield, during the years 1884–1896, inclusive. Being a Graduation Thesis presented to the University of Edinburgh.∗

The period chosen is from the introduction of “The Criminal Lunatics Act, 1884,” to the end of the year 1896, and male cases only are considered.

The Insanity of the Climacteric Period

Although much of a speculative kind appears to have been written upon the subject of climacteric insanity, more especially as regards the pathology of the disorder, the accumulation of actual facts, bearing upon its genesis, symptomatology, and terminations is comparatively small. Exception must be made for the highly practical paper lately read by Dr. Savage at the Medical Society. A further contribution dealing as far as possible with matters of observation may be serviceable. For the purpose of this paper, in addition to the cases coming under the direct observation of the writers, the records of Bethlem (10 years, 102 cases) and the West Riding Asylum, Wakefield (10 years, 120 cases) have been drawn upon. We are indebted to Dr. Salter, Clinical Assistant, Bethlem Hospital, for much assistance in collecting the cases, and Dr. Percy Smith for permission to use the records of Bethlem.
