Forgotten alliances: Japan’s role in World War I and its enduring impact on Southeast Asian geopolitics

Vector competence of Aedes albopictus field populations from Reunion Island exposed to local epidemic dengue viruses

Dengue virus (DENV) is the most prevalent mosquito-borne Flavivirus that affects humans worldwide. Aedes albopictus, which is naturally infected with the bacteria Wolbachia, is considered to be a secondary vector of DENV. However, it was responsible for a recent DENV outbreak of unprecedented magnitude in Reunion Island, a French island in the South West Indian Ocean. Moreover, the distribution of the cases during this epidemic showed a spatially heterogeneous pattern across the island, leading to questions about the differential vector competence of mosquito populations from different geographic areas. The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of the vector competence of the Ae. albopictus populations from Reunion Island for local DENV epidemic strains, while considering their infection by Wolbachia. Experimental infections were conducted using ten populations of Ae. albopictus sampled across Reunion Island and exposed to three DENV strains: one strain of DENV serotype 1 (DENV-1) and two strains of DENV serotype 2 (DENV-2). We analyzed three vector competence parameters including infection rate, dissemination efficiency and transmission efficiency, at different days post-exposition (dpe). We also assessed whether there was a correlation between the density of Wolbachia and viral load/vector competence parameters. Our results show that the Ae. albopictus populations tested were not able to transmit the two DENV-2 strains, while transmission efficiencies up to 40.79% were observed for the DENV-1 strain, probably due to difference in viral titres. Statistical analyses showed that the parameters mosquito population, generation, dpe and area of sampling significantly affect the transmission efficiencies of DENV-1. Although the density of Wolbachia varied according to mosquito population, no significant correlation was found between Wolbachia density and either viral load or vector competence parameters for DENV-1. Our results highlight the importance of using natural mosquito populations for a better understanding of transmission patterns of dengue.

New COI-COII mtDNA Region Haplotypes in the Endemic Honey Bees Apis mellifera intermissa and Apis mellifera sahariensis (Hymenoptera: Apidae) in Algeria.

The practice of beekeeping in Algeria is of great cultural, social, and economic importance. However, the importation of non-local subspecies reported by beekeepers has disrupted the natural geographical distribution area and the genetic diversity of the native honey bees. To assess the genetic diversity of A. m. intermissa and A. m. sahariensis, and their relationships with African and European subspecies, the COI-COII intergenic region was analyzed in 335 individuals, 68 sampled in Algeria, 71 in Europe, Madagascar, and the South West Indian Ocean archipelagos, and 196 sequences recovered from GenBank. The results show the presence of the A lineage exclusively in Algerian samples with the identification of 24 haplotypes of which 16 are described for the first time. These haplotypes were found to be shared by both subspecies, with A74 being the most common haplotype in the population studied. The sequence comparison indicates the existence of three polymorphisms of the COI-COII marker: P0Q, P0QQ, and P0QQQ. One new haplotype was identified in the M lineage in samples from France. No evidence of genetic introgression within the Algerian honey bee population was detected. These data enhance our knowledge of the genetic diversity and emphasize the importance of protecting these local subspecies.

Environmental conditions affecting air pollution dispersion over Richards Bay, South Africa

Air pollution dispersion over Richards Bay, South Africa is studied using satellite, reanalysis and in-situ measurements. Near-surface concentrations of trace gases and particulates reach high concentrations under dry stable ‘berg’ winds. Temporal records of CO, NO2, O3, PM2.5, SO2 (2000-2023) exhibit no trend and short-term dose exceedances of individual pollutants are rare and confined to winter mornings. Regional point-to-field correlation maps of a Richards Bay winter air pollution index found that anomalous warming of the west Indian Ocean accelerates the jet stream over Madagascar and pulls smoke- and dust-laden north-westerly winds across the South African plateau, implicating long-range transport. At daily and hourly time scales dewpoint temperature and boundary layer height best indicate changes in local air pollution dispersion that impact respiratory health. A case study of 15-17 June 2021 revealed a 10ºC thermal inversion caused by negative sensible heat fluxes of -40 W/m2 through the night, leading to SO2 concentrations above 100 ppb in the morning along the main access road (28.8ºS, 32ºE). Poor dispersion seldom happens in the summer when turbulent mixing and rainfall cleanse the air.

Biogenic and lithogenic silicon along the GEOTRACES south West Indian Ocean section (SWINGS-GS02) and the islands mass effect on regional Si biogeochemical cycle

The distribution and cycling of biogenic silica (BSi) and lithogenic silicon (LSi) in the ocean play crucial roles in the global silicon cycle and marine ecosystem dynamics. This is especially the case in the Southern Ocean where diatoms constitute the predominant phytoplankton and participate in a major way to the biological carbon pump. This study presents an assessment of BSi and LSi concentrations along the GEOTRACES South West Indian Ocean Section (SWINGS, late austral summer 2021), where several and contrasting regions were encountered: oligotrophic Mozambique basin, HNLC (High Nutrient Low Chlorophyll) areas and regions fertilized by the Subantarctic islands. Suspended particles were sampled from Niskin bottles and in situ pumps, along with scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations and specific pigments measurements to support BSi and LSi analyses. With samples coming from a contrasting study area prone to diverse continental influences, our BSi and LSi results showed a reproducibility of 13 ± 7%, in the same range as the established protocol. BSi concentrations show a north-south gradient with maxima encountered in the Antarctic Zone, and contrasted results between HNLC open ocean areas and naturally fertilized regions in the vicinity of the Subantarctic islands. Some open ocean stations have unusually high BSi (e.g. > 5 μmol L−1) likely resulting from fertilization by aerosols, upwelling or island mass effect when they are downstream of the islands. Coupling of BSi with SEM observations and pigments measurements respectively showed diatoms were the most representative of the carrying phase of BSi and suggested silicification changes, induced either by heavily silicified diatoms or by micronutrient limitation in HNLC regions. BSi is often dominated by the smallest size fraction (0.45–5 μm) which represent 47 ± 23% of the total BSi based on 29 measurements on size fractionated samples. LSi results highlighted atmospheric inputs at the surface and nepheloid layers in the water column, which makes LSi overall a good indicator of the origin of lithogenic materials. SEM observations supported these results, enabling characterization of the diversity of lithogenic materials in the vicinity of the Subantarctic islands, more specifically volcanic ash around Heard Island, and within the nepheloid layers.

Influence of convective parameterization on the simulation of tropical cyclones over the South West Indian Ocean: A case study of tropical cyclone Idai (2019)

Proper configuration of the physical parameterization scheme is important for accurate outcomes of mesoscale weather forecasting model. This study evaluates the performance of four distinct cumulus parameterization schemes: the Kain-Fritsch (KF), Grell 3D ensemble (GR3D), Modified Tiedtke (MTIEDKE) and Modified Kain-Fritsch (MKF) schemes, in simulating Tropical Cyclone (TC) Idai (2019) in the Southern Indian Ocean. Utilizing the Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) model and TC best-track and satellite precipitation datasets, the research assesses the models' efficacy in replicating Idai's observed track and intensity. Results indicate that the KF, MTIEDKE, and MKF schemes reasonably capture Idai's southwestward track, with MKF demonstrating superior accuracy in reproducing observed intensity evolution. Conversely, the GR3D simulation exhibits a northwestward deviation, leading to notable track and intensity errors. Further investigations suggest that the smaller track and intensity differences in the MKF simulation are linked to the more accurate simulation of rainfall in both the surrounding environment and the TC inner-core region. The two factors exert strong influences on the large-scale steering flow and TC secondary circulation, respectively. The findings underscore the importance of selecting appropriate convective parameterization schemes for precise tropical cyclone simulations in the Southern Indian Ocean. This research contributes valuable insights into the intricate interaction between convective processes and atmospheric dynamics, offering implications for enhancing tropical cyclone prediction models in the region.

Environmental DNA recovers fish composition turnover of the coral reefs of West Indian Ocean islands.

Islands have been used as model systems to study ecological and evolutionary processes, and they provide an ideal set-up for validating new biodiversity monitoring methods. The application of environmental DNA metabarcoding for monitoring marine biodiversity requires an understanding of the spatial scale of the eDNA signal, which is best tested in island systems. Here, we investigated the variation in Actinopterygii and Elasmobranchii species composition recovered from eDNA metabarcoding along a gradient of distance-to-reef in four of the five French Scattered Islands in the Western Indian Ocean. We collected surface water samples at an increasing distance from reefs (0 m, 250 m, 500 m, 750 m). We used a metabarcoding protocol based on the 'teleo' primers to target marine reef fishes and classified taxa according to their habitat types (benthic or pelagic). We investigated the effect of distance-to-reef on β diversity variation using generalised linear mixed models and estimated species-specific distance-to-reef effects using a model-based approach for community data. Environmental DNA metabarcoding analyses recovered distinct fish species compositions across the four inventoried islands and variations along the distance-to-reef gradient. The analysis of β-diversity variation showed significant taxa turnover between the eDNA samples on and away from the reefs. In agreement with a spatially localised signal from eDNA, benthic species were distributed closer to the reef than pelagic ones. Our findings demonstrate that the combination of eDNA inventories and spatial modelling can provide insights into species habitat preferences related to distance-to-reef gradients at a small scale. As such, eDNA can not only recover large compositional differences among islands but also help understand habitat selection and distribution of marine species at a finer spatial scale.

A Holistic Approach to Cardiometabolic and Infectious Health in the General Population of Reunion Island: The REUNION Study.

Reunion Island is a French overseas department in the South West Indian Ocean with a unique multi-ethnic population. Cardiovascular diseases are the most common chronic conditions with higher prevalences of hypertension and diabetes compared to mainland France. Moreover, Reunion Island is particularly exposed to vector-borne diseases such as chikungunya and dengue. Our objective is to describe the prevalence of cardiometabolic and infectious diseases in Reunion Island and explore causal mechanisms linking these diseases. The REUNION study is an ongoing French prospective study. From January 2022, 2,000 consenting participants (18-68 years old) are being recruited from the general population according to polling lists and random generation of cellphone number. Baseline examination consists of (i) general health examination, assessment of cardiovascular risk factors, markers of subclinical atherosclerosis, bronchial obstruction, neuropathic and autonomic dysfunction, (ii) questionnaires to determine sociodemographic characteristics, diet, exposure to vector-borne diseases, mental health and cognitive functions, social inequalities in health and ethnic origins, (iii) biological sampling for determination of cardiovascular risk factors, seroprevalence of infectious diseases, innovative lipid biomarkers, advanced omics, composition of intestinal, periodontal and skin microbiota, and biobanking. The REUNION study should provide new insights into the prevalence of cardiometabolic and infectious diseases, as well as their potential associations through the examination of various environmental pathways and a wide range of health aspects.

The first assessment of marine litter on Somalian coast: The case of Liido Beach, Mogadishu

This paper presents the first assessment of marine litter in the Mogadishu coastal area of Somalia. Samples were collected monthly using 100 m × 40 m transect and classified following OSPAR Marine Litter Survey Guide while litter sources were identified using Ocean Conservancy Marine Debris Index. The results showed a total of 119873 items consisting of plastics (89.47%), clothing items (7.53%), and others (3.00%) recovered from Liido Beach. Litter density ranged from 2.19 items/m2 to 14.18 items/m2 with a mean of 6.25 items/m2 and Clean Coast Index (CCI) suggesting that Liido Beach is extremely dirty (>20 items/m2). In addition, the primary sources of marine litter at the beach are local recreational and shoreline activities (54.12%), and dumping (36.61%). The dominance of plastic litter on the beach poses potential threats to marine biodiversity in the Somalia coastal area and the West Indian Ocean. It is recommended that effective strategies and solutions to mitigate litter on the beach and other coastal areas in Somalia should be developed and compensated with public education and awareness campaigns across the country.

Dissolved Organic Radiocarbon in the West Indian Ocean

AbstractWe report marine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations, and DOC Δ14C and δ13C in seawater collected from the West Indian Ocean during the GO‐SHIP I07N cruise in 2018. We find bomb 14C in DOC from the upper 1,000 m of the water column. There is no significant change in ∆14C of DOC in deep water northward, unlike that of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), suggesting that transport of deep water northward is not controlling the 14C age of DOC. Variability of DOC ∆14C, including high values in the deep waters, is more pronounced than in other oceans, suggesting that dissolution of surface derived particulate organic carbon is a source of modern carbon to deep DOC in the West Indian Ocean. Low δ13C are present at two of the five stations studied, suggesting a source of low δ13C DOC, or additional microbial utilization of deep DOC.

Reproductive Biology and Distribution of the Blue Shark (Prionace glauca) in the Western Indian Ocean.

Due to the limited biological research on the blue shark in the Indian Ocean, such as the lack of a clear understanding of its reproductive biology and distribution, our study analyzed and evaluated the fork length distribution, sexual maturity length, reproductive capacity, and spatiotemporal distribution of blue sharks based on biological data and capture location information collected in the western Indian Ocean from 2010 to 2020. The objective of this study is to provide reliable biological information important in performing future stock assessments vital for species conservation in this region. A total of 791 male (33-249.5 cm FL) and 803 female (12-349.6 cm FL) blue sharks were collected in the West Indian Ocean. We used the morphology of the sexual organs to ascertain their sexual maturity. Results show that the observed size at 50% sexual maturity of male blue sharks in the West Indian Ocean was 161.4cm FL (192.4 cm TL) for males and 179.3 cm FL (213.9 cm TL) for females based on logistic curve analysis. The average litter size of pregnant blue sharks was 33.7 pups. There were significant differences in the distribution of blue shark individuals with different sexual maturity levels in different quarters (p < 0.05). This study suggests that the area near the equator in the Indian Ocean from October to March of the following year may be the mating ground for blue sharks, while the temperate waters in the Indian Ocean are the nursery ground and parturition ground for pregnant and juvenile throughout the whole year. Therefore, it is recommended to adopt a more scientific and reasonable operational method in these areas.

Geographic population structure of the honeybee microsporidian parasite Vairimorpha (Nosema) ceranae in the South West Indian Ocean

The microsporidian Vairimorpha (Nosema) ceranae is one of the most common parasites of the honeybee. A single honeybee carries many parasites and therefore multiple alleles of V. ceranae genes that seem to be ubiquitous. As a consequence, nucleotide diversity analyses have not allowed discriminating genetic structure of parasite populations. We performed deep loci-targeted sequencing to monitor the haplotype frequencies of genome markers in isolates from discontinuous territories, namely the tropical islands of the South West Indian Ocean. The haplotype frequency distribution corroborated the suspected tetraploidy of the parasite. Most major haplotypes were ubiquitous in the area but with variable frequency. While oceanic isolates differed from European and Asian outgroups, parasite populations from distinct archipelagoes also differed in their haplotype distribution. Interestingly an original and very divergent Malagasy isolate was detected. The observed population structure allowed formulating hypotheses upon the natural history of V. ceranae in this oceanic area. We also discussed the usefulness of allelic distribution assessment, using multiple informative loci or genome-wide analyses, when parasite population is not clonal within a single host.

Forecasting Magnitude and Frequency of Seasonal Streamflow Extremes Using a Bayesian Hierarchical Framework

AbstractWe develop a space‐time Bayesian hierarchical modeling (BHM) framework for two flood risk attributes—seasonal daily maximum flow and the number of events that exceed a threshold during a season (NEETM)—at a suite of gauge locations on a river network. The model uses generalized extreme value (GEV) and Poisson distributions as marginals for these flood attributes with non‐stationary parameters. The rate parameters of the Poisson distribution and location, scale, and shape parameters of the GEV are modeled as linear functions of suitable covariates. Gaussian copulas are applied to capture the spatial dependence. The best covariates are selected using the Watanabe‐Akaike information criterion (WAIC). The modeling framework results in the posterior distribution of the flood attributes at all the gauges and various lead times. We demonstrate the utility of this modeling framework to forecast the flood risk attributes during the summer peak monsoon season (July‐August) at five gauges in the Narmada River basin (NRB) of West‐Central India for several lead times (0–3 months). As potential covariates, we consider climate indices such as El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), and the Pacific Warm Pool Region (PWPR) from antecedent seasons, which have shown strong teleconnections with the Indian monsoon. We also include new indices related to the East Pacific and West Indian Ocean regions depending on the lead times. We show useful long lead skill from this modeling approach which has a strong potential to enable robust risk‐based flood mitigation and adaptation strategies 3 months before flood occurrences.

Characterizing Northeast Africa Drought and Its Drivers

This study explores the drivers of drought over northeast (NE) Africa as represented by monthly ERA5 potential evaporation during 1970–2022. The comparisons with surface heat flux and A-pan measurements suggest that potential evaporation quantifies moisture deficits that lead to drought. A principal component (PC) analysis of potential evaporation has the following leading modes: PC-1 in the Nile Basin and PC-2 in the Rift Valley. Time scores were filtered and regressed onto fields of SST, netOLR, and 500 hPa zonal wind to find teleconnections, and drought composites were analyzed for anomalous structure. The results identify that cold-phase Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) couples with the overlying zonal Walker circulation. Deep easterly winds subside at −0.1 m/s over the west Indian Ocean and NE Africa, causing desiccation that spreads westward from the Rift Valley via diurnal heat fluxes. Insights are gained on IOD modulation based on the Pacific ENSO, but long-range forecasts remain elusive.

From edenic island to endemic park: A historical political ecology of environmental degradation narratives on Réunion (West Indian Ocean)

Exploring the premise that environmental injustices date back centuries, this article provides an overview of the long trajectory of degradation narratives on Réunion, from the earliest colonial concerns in the late seventeenth century to the contemporary National Park. Through a historical political ecology approach, we identify distinct phases where degradation narratives became prominent, and sometimes entered into conflict, in the environmental history of this French overseas territory, which was a French colony until 1946. Although degradation narratives have shifted significantly over time, they have also gradually converged to a condemnation of the uplands' inhabitants. So far, this move has reproduced socio-spatial inequalities between the uplands region, dedicated to environmental policies, and the lowlands region, dedicated to a plantation economy. Such an account suggests that environmental inequalities may be constituted through a process of continuous change that involves negotiations and often conflicts among multiple dominant stakeholders. Thus, contemporary conservation regimes should not only improve their governance mode, but need to start by doing justice to conservation’ history, especially dynamics of misrecognition with colonial roots.

Exchange of Pb from Indian to Atlantic Ocean is driven by Agulhas current and atmospheric Pb input from South Africa

Using a spatiotemporal dataset of dissolved lead (dPb) from the subtropical oceans surrounding South Africa, this study quantifies the exchange of dPb between the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Despite the absence of a major Pb source within the South Atlantic sector and the complete phase-out of leaded petroleum in Southern Africa, the ecologically important southeast Cape Basin shows an elevated surface dPb concentration (21–30 pmol kg−1). We estimated up to 90% of the measured dPb in surface waters of the Cape Basin was delivered from the Indian Ocean via the Agulhas Current (AC). Eddy dynamics and leakage at Agulhas retroflection result in an increased Pb flux from winter to summer, while a long-term (2008–2019) temporal change in dPb in the AC-derived water of Cape Basin was contemporaneous to a change in atmospheric Pb emissions from South Africa. The South African-origin atmospheric Pb, however, contributes first to the Agulhas waters in the West Indian Ocean, which is then transported to the South Atlantic, thereby regulating the dPb inventory of the Cape Basin. This indirect mechanism of Pb transfer emphasizes the importance of regulating Pb emissions from Southern Africa to protect rich fishing grounds associated with the Benguela marine ecosystem.

Evaluation of a Mesoscale Coupled Ocean‐Atmosphere Configuration for Tropical Cyclone Forecasting in the South West Indian Ocean Basin

AbstractThe performance in term of tropical cyclone track and intensity prediction of the new coupled ocean‐atmosphere system based on the operational atmospheric model AROME‐Indian Ocean and the ocean model NEMO is assessed against that of the current operational configuration in the case of seven recent tropical cyclones. Five different configurations of the forecast system are evaluated: two with the coupled system, two with an ocean mixed layer parameterization and one with a constant sea surface temperature. For each ocean‐atmosphere coupling option, one is initialized directly with the MERCATOR‐Ocean PSY4 product as in the current operational configuration and the other with the ocean state that is cycled in the AROME‐NEMO coupled suite since a few days before the cyclone intensification. The results show that the coupling with NEMO generally improves the intensity of cyclones in AROME‐IO, reducing the mean intensity bias of the 72 hr forecast of about 10 hPa. However, the impact is especially significant when the TCs encounter a slow propagation phase. For short‐term forecasts (less than 36 hr), the presence of a cooling in the initial state that has been triggered by the AROME high‐resolution cyclonic winds in a previous coupled forecast already improves the tropical cyclone intensity bias of 2–3 hPa for both coupled or uncoupled configurations.

Brewed in the African pot: the phylogeography of the toothed barnacle Chthamalus dentatus (Chthamaloidea: Chthamalidae)

ABSTRACT The toothed barnacle Chthamalus dentatus has a wide distribution in the intertidal zone along the coasts of Africa, ostensibly occurring from Madagascar and Mozambique in the West Indian Ocean to Senegal in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean. We studied the differences in the mitochondrial COI gene of 287 individuals from 15 different locations and found that this taxon, which morphologically is considered a single species, actually compromises three genetically distinct clades – the South African, the Namibian, and the Cameroonian. The genetic differences between these units are similar or larger than those found between different species of Chthamalus. We suggest that the nominal species C. dentatus is a cluster of three cryptic species. These cryptic species are separated by a series of upwelling systems that are likely to act as barriers to the distribution of propagules of C. dentatus. Based on molecular and morphological data, we indicate that C. dentatus is probably a close relative of the Caribbean and Central American species of Chthamalus.

The coral conditions contribute to the abundance and species composition of butterflyfish. This study investigates the relationship between its habitat conditions and dominance of butterflyfish in western Indonesia. Data were collected using UVC in 78 sites during 2015, 2016, and 2018 that are grouped into 2 groups. The results show group A has a lower number of species (2 - 6) but the density is high, instead, group B is 9-20 species but has a low density. Species dominant and their relations with benthic substrate were Chaetodon octofasciatus (7.2%) in group A, and group B Heniochus pleurotaenia and Chaetodon triangulum (21%). The differences in species domination might also be affected by habitat conditions, such as the period of the highest sea surface temperature. The group had different environmental conditions, which group A might be influenced by the Karimata strait and Indian Ocean west Sumatera in group B. Those 4 species have relation to SST include F. flavissimus.
