The Covent-Garden Journal and A Plan of the Universal Register-Office , and: An Enquiry into the Causes of the Late Increase of Robbers and Related Writings (review)

Georges Noël, Mme de Graffigny's biographer of 1913, is not her distant descendant (pp. 93, 115), but is descended from Mme Durival, to whom Panpan Devaux willed the author's papers in 1796. The Rustin article does not cite English Showalter, "Les Lettres d'une Péruvienne: composition, publication, suites" (Archives et bibliothèques de Belgique 54 [1983], pp. 14—28), which quotes from some of Mme de Graffigny's yet unpublished letters. Finally, there are no references to La Correspondance de Mme de Graffigny now being published (Oxford: Voltaire Foundation, vols. 1 and 2, 1985, 1989; twelve more volumes will appear); this edition would certainly interest the authors of these papers, if only to corroborate the suspected autobiographical elements hidden in the text. Zilia's desire to renounce "les sentiments tumultueux" (lettre 41) echoes Mme de Graffigny's frequent meditations in her letters on her relationship with the volatile Leopold Desmarest, while the evocation of Zilia's sumptuous property near Paris surely represents the vivid fantasy of the impoverished author, so often obliged by circumstance to "changer de gîte." Middletown, CT: Wesleyan University Press, 1988. lxix + 517pp. Henry Fielding. An Enquiry into the Causes of the Late Increase ofRobbers and Related Writings. Ed. Malvin R. Zirker. Middletown, CT: Wesleyan University Press, 1988. cxxii + 340pp. I welcome these two latest volumes (the seventh and eighth) in the Wesleyan edition of Fielding's works. With their minute annotation, they provide a comprehensive picture of London and of Fielding's magisterial mind in his unrewarding Bow Street days. Bertrand A. Goldgar's edition contains the seventy-two issues of the Covent-Garden Journal (1752), preceded by the admittedly slight Plan written by Henry and John Fielding to promote the Universal Register Office, which combined "an employment agency, a financial institution, a real estate agency, a curiosity shop, and a travel bureau" (p. xvi), and which the Journal was originally meant to promote. Malvin R. Zirker's volume brings together all of Fielding's social and legal pamphlets. These works pose few genuinely major textual problems. The only really thorny problem arises from a text that is also one of the most helpful. The Bodleian's run of the Journal was annotated by Fielding and two other hands; twenty-six issues are missing but they are "exactly the ones reprinted" (p. Ivi) by Murphy in 1762, suggesting that Murphy is authoritative, but since not all variants could be Fielding's, Goldgar sensibly accepts 1762 substantive variants unless they clash with Fielding's usual practice. Zirker has even fewer problems with textual matters, since the second editions of his pamphlets vary little from the first. The result: fewer than two dozen substantive variants and four obvious emendations. Fredson Bowers provides a typical Wesleyan textual introduction to Zirker but none to Goldgar. The specialist textual appendices of emendations , word-division, historical collation, and bibliographical descriptions are scrupulous. Goldgar's index is more comprehensive than Zirker's, which is selective (but why?) with topics and statutes. REVIEWS 353 The Covent-Garden Journal has neither the range of the Champion, nor the narrow partisanship of the Jacobite's Journal and the True-Patriot. With a "life of its own to lead as the vehicle for the social, moral, and literary reflections of a major novelist in the last phase of his career" (Goldgar, p. xxviii), the Covent-Garden Journal shows Fielding 's preoccupation with degenerate morality, mainly in central London at mid-century. Though not parochial in content, the journal might well have been so in circulation: even Goldgar's persistence has unearthed no evidence about its sales (probably small, since it cost threepence); surviving runs are rare and only two are complete. Zirker repeats his earlier (1966) contention that Fielding approved of "fixed social roles, of class privilege and class disequalities [sic]," and had only passing sympathy with the poor (p. xxii). Narrative as Enclosure: The Contextual Histories of H. Stuart Hughes

In 1987 Wesleyan University Press reissued two important works by one of the most influential writers and teachers of Modem European Intellectual History. As sequels to H. Stuart Hughes's Consciousness and Society (1958), The Obstructed Path (1968) and The Sea Change (1975) have now been combined in a volume entitled Between Commitment and Disillusion. In 1988 Harvard University Press published Hughes's latest study of contemporary intellectual life in Europe, Sophisticated Rebels: The Political Culture of European Dissent. The time seems right for taking another look at Hughes's approach to intellectual history, and to consider it in relation to contemporary trends in the field.2 In his introduction to the Wesleyan edition of his work Hughes situates his approach to history between two others which have focused primarily on textual analysis, those associated with Lovejoy on the one hand, and Parisian structuralism and deconstruction on the other. Whereas Hughes and his cohorts laid heavy stress on context, the textualisms of his predecessors and successors have been more concerned with precision of method (ix). The school with which Hughes identifies depends less on philosophy and literary theory than it does on general on the role of human beings in the societies that have formed them and that they in turn have altered (x). How is the use of this general speculation related to the relative neglect-perhaps even suspicions aboutmethodology? And how is the knowledge produced (or the desires satisfied) by his narratives of historical context related to the knowledge produced (or the desires satisfied) by intellectual histories that focus primarily on textual analysis?

A MELUS Interview: Joy Harjo

In the summer of 1987 Joy Harjo and participated in Larry Evers' NEH seminar at the University of Arizona on American Indian Verbal Art and Literature. After reading her poetry, had looked forward to meeting and talking with her. In the course of seminar discussions and informal conversations became more aware of the scope of Joy's interests: she is a jazz musician and visual artist as well as a poet, and has been active in human rights work in this country and internationally. Joy gave a reading from her work then in progress, a collection of poems titled In Mad Love and War (Wesleyan University Press, 1990), for the NEH seminar participants. Her introductory remarks at that reading will introduce her in her own words to readers of this interview: I was born in Tulsa. I'm Creek, Muskogee. We are originally from Alabama, though the Creek Confederacy covered the southeast United States. I'm related to Alexander Posey, the Creek poet; he was my father's father's mother's cousin. So, it makes sense, suppose, that I'm very much involved right now initiating an Arts Council for the tribe with Helen Chalakee, and beginning with the Alexander Posey Award for poetry for kids. grew up in Oklahoma until was about sixteen, when went to Indian boarding school in Santa Fe, New Mexico. And I've lived in New Mexico much of my life. My son was born in Tahlequah, but moved back to New Mexico when he was 18 months old. attended graduate school in Iowa at the Iowa Writers' Workshop-did time there. But Oklahoma is my home, and New Mexico is my other home. I'm a poet and a writer because am curious about this process called living, the transformational aspects of language. Some of the conversation in this interview comes from that reading, and most of the rest from transcriptions of a tape made a day or two later. We began our conversation at a restaurant over lunch, and continued it at the university. After edited the first transcript sent it with the tapes to Joy; she went over the text carefully, clarifying her thought at many points, as did later with the introductory notes, until we were both satisfied with it.
