'A journal with ambitions': Health Libraries Review and Shane Godbolt.

In 1978, the UK Library Association's newly formed Medical, Health and Welfare Libraries Group decided to establish a newsletter for its members. This paper sets out to describe how that newsletter evolved into Health Libraries Review (subsequently Health Information and Libraries Journal) and became the premier European journal for health-care information professionals. Drawing on both published accounts and personal reminiscences, it focuses on the role played by Shane Godbolt as the Review's founding editor. It analyses and discusses the factors that influenced her work, and concludes by summarising the lasting importance of her achievements as editor.

The nursing interest subgroup: beginning the organization of nursing librarians.

The Nursing Interest Subgroup (NISG) was established in 1980 to act as a focus for librarians providing services to nurses and to encourage understanding between the two professions. The NISG held social events, study days and produced regular newsletters for members. Relationships were developed with NHS Regional Librarians, where they existed, and links made with overseas colleagues. As a subgroup of the Medical, Health and Welfare Libraries Group of the Library Association, the NISG was called to comment upon developments in nurse training and education. Particular concerns were the generally inadequate level of resourcing for library provision, especially for qualified nurses, and the salary scales of nursing librarians. The NISG facilitated the sharing of experience, provided opportunities for professional and educational development and served to raise the profile of nurses' libraries. In 1986 the group was renamed and lives on today as 'Libraries for Nursing'.

Health information services: a submission to LISC (Library Information Services Council) by the Library Association on behalf of its Medical, Health and Welfare Libraries Group.

The Library Association Medical, Health and Welfare Libraries Group was asked by the Library and Information Services Council (LISC) for England to submit a paper on health information services for the lay person and this presented a timely opportunity to consider the situation thus far and possibilities for the future. A working group was set up from amongst those active in the field to pool ideas and experience, and it was fortunate also in being able to include consideration of Elaine Kempson's recently published study Informing health consumers. It was felt particularly that whilst a number of worthwhile services were developing there was no guarantee of adequate local provision and that in the absence of any sort of framework there was considerable danger of duplication of effort and isolation on the part of the practitioners. The paper was considered by LISC in October 1988 and in the intervening period our recommendation that public library development incentive funding might be used to enable a public library to co-operate with other local statutory and voluntary agencies in the setting up of a pilot local health information centre, perhaps capitalizing on existing expertise by buying-in a database such as that of Help for Health, has been fulfilled by the establishment of the Dorset Health Information Service whose progress will be watched with interest. Nevertheless there is still much to be achieved in this field and it is hoped that this paper will prove a useful basis for continued discussion.
