Living the Apostolic Faith Together Today

AbstractAs the Commission on Faith and Order of the World Council of Churches (WCC) prepares to mark the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea in 2025, its distinctive task is to invite the churches to commemorate ecumenically and to consider the search for visible unity under the theme “Living the apostolic faith together today.” Recognizing the diverse expectations of Christians for this anniversary, Faith and Order is planning a year of ecumenical events and opportunities, including a World Conference on Faith and Order with both in‐person and livestreamed participation. The 2025 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will focus on the Nicaea commemoration, and Faith and Order will collaborate with other WCC units and the churches. Topics for discussion are grouped under three themes: faith, unity, and mission. Online activities will enhance the opportunities for Christians around the globe to encounter one another in a spirit of love and reconciliation.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity from a Romanian Orthodox Perspective: A Historical and Missiological Analysis of Common Prayer

Every year, the member Churches of the World Council of Churches (WCC) are called to actively participate in the meetings organized in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. From my perspective, these moments are an extraordinary opportunity to share in the richness of the Orthodox tradition, which means an act of confession and authentic witness. In the first part, I will present critically the canonical synthesis of the Orthodox, the concept of “Ecumenical Eucharist” and of Lima Liturgy, followed by the recommendations of the Special Commission for Orthodox participation in the WCC regarding confessional and interconfessional common prayer. Then, this article will make a historical presentation of the week of prayer. It is very important to know how this initiative started and how it was accepted at the beginning and over the years. At least in Romania, where we have an Orthodox majority, this week has become a controversial issue produced by those who are against ecumenical dialogue. A special attention is for the actual practice approved by the Romanian Patriarchate. Finally, the article will present the statements of the new Orthodox documents and it will end with some conclusions about this moment of common Christian witness.

Population Based Survey of the COVID-19 Outbreak in the Haut-Rhin Department from January to April 2020

Background: The department of Haut-Rhin is identified as one of the first clusters of the COVID-19 outbreak in France. The alert was raised by local sanitary authorities on March 3rd, following a week of prayer organized by a Christian church which gathered about 2000 people from February 17th to 21th 2020 in Mulhouse, France and identified as the origin of the epidemic in Haut-Rhin. Our aim was to document the temporal distribution of the COVID-19 cases, to identify the beginning of the outbreak and to evaluate the potential role played by the Christian gathering on the virus propagation. Methods: We conducted an online population-based survey to evaluate if people had symptoms commonly experienced in case of COVID-19 infection and when. The reproduction number was approximated by the number of cases induced in one family. The generation interval was computed as the difference between the occurrence days of successive family cases. The epidemic threshold was estimated from the upper limit of the 95% confidence interval of the incidence moving mean on the last seven days, using December 15th 2019 to January 15th 2020 period as reference. Results: Preliminary results were obtained from data reported by 1244 families representing almost 3.300 individuals. Reproduction number is estimated to 1.4 and generation interval to 4 days. The curve of incidence shows that the epidemic begun before the sanitary alert was given and that some of the attendees to the Christian week of prayer displayed symptoms before the event. The curve of the seven days moving average shows a crossing of the epidemic threshold on January 27th, with a first wave until February 17th. The second wave, much more important, immediately followed with a maximum after mid-March. The epidemic then diminishes rapidly later in March, crossing again the epidemic threshold on April 6th. Discussion: Our results are preliminary and the survey is still ongoing. The epidemic in Haut-Rhin started five weeks before the sanitary alert and the Christian meeting played a secondary role. These results highlight the interest of coupling population-based surveillance to hospital disease surveillance to trigger an alarm earlier in case of emerging disease.

Czai obecne są zagadnienia,które wynikają z realizacji takich zadań katechezy, jak: rozwój poznania wiary, wprowadzeniedo misji, wychowanie do modlitwy oraz wychowanie do życia wspólnotowego.

Mística da unidade, dimensões da espiritualidade ecumênica e da oração em comum entre todos os cristãos

O trabalho do movimento ecumênico pela unidade cristã possui uma dimensão que atua na sensibilidade para o restabelecimento da unidade: a espiritualidade ecumênica. O artigo trata dos elementos da mística da unidade e suas principais características: sua base trinitária, sua expressão como ato de fé, de conversão, de humildade e de sacrifício; das dimensões da espiritualidade ecumênica: a conversão, que se expressa na metanoia evangélica; o diálogo como tarefa de todos os cristãos; e o serviço orientado ao mundo e como testemunho à humanidade. Apresentam-se algumas iniciativas de oração em comum da história do cristianismo, o histórico da Semana de Oração pela Unidade Cristã (SOUC), as dimensões da prece em comum entre os cristãos na perspectiva de Paul Couturier: como prece universal, contemplativa e eficaz; e orientações sobre como viabilizar a oração em comum pela unidade.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity: Its History and Concerns for the Future

This article considers critically the role of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in the current wintry climate of ecumenism. Its history, theological basis, the relevance of spiritual ecumenism and the current praxis of the Week are examined in the context of present ecumenical issues.

Effects of fishing power and competitive interactions among vessels on the effort allocation on the trip level of the Dutch beam trawl fleet

Variations in catch rates in relation to the spatial distribution of beam trawlers were analyzed using mandatory logbook data from the Dutch fleet for 1990-1996. Catch rates by trip, corrected for differences in market value, showed a consistent seasonal pattern with the highest values found during autumn and winter. Catch rates showed a log-linear relationship with engine power, indicating differences in competitive abilities among vessels. In 65% of the fishing trips, catch per unit of effort is equalized among fishing grounds. In the remaining trips, catch rates were below average, suggesting that vessels showed exploratory fishing. These results corroborate predictions of the ideal free distribution theory. More powerful vessels were over-represented on better fishing grounds as compared with less powerful vessels. As a special case the effect of vessel density on catch rate was investigated utilizing the convenient fact that a segment of the Dutch fleet stayed in port during one week each year ('week of prayer'). The catch rate of vessels that continued fishing was 10% higher than in the week before or following the week of prayer. No such differences were observed in a reference area where no change in vessel density was observed. Implications of this evidence of competitive interactions among vessels in relation to fisheries management are discussed. (C) 2000 International Council for the Exploration of the Sea.

We are realizing ever more sharply the scandal of the divisions in Christianity, ever more urgently the need to work towards reconciliation and unity. The Ecumenical Movement is gaining ground, finding its widest expression in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity from the 18th to the 25th of January. Only Christ himself through his Spirit can perfect his movement towards peace, inspiring, accepting and making use of our penitence, humility, love and efforts to understand one another. But this is not the primary breach within the People of God: that between Jews and Gentiles is earlier and more fundamental still, a continuation into contemporary history of a separation that was necessary at one stage of the history of salvation. Here too Christ is, and is to be, the source of peace and reconciliation.
