On the Persian Wedding Invitation Genre

The present study is an attempt to conduct a genre analysis of Persian wedding invitations. Drawing on the model of genre analysis proposed by Swales, a sample of 70 Persian wedding invitation cards has been analyzed in terms of their component moves, obligatory and optional moves, and move order. The results of the analysis have revealed seven generic components by means of which Iranian inviters ritually structure their wedding invitation texts in Persian. The results of the study will shed light on how the Persian wedding invitation genre is constructed drawing on the linguistic features of its generic moves and why the wedding invitation texts are structured in this particular way in Persian providing hints of the underlying socio-cultural conventions responsible for shaping this very genre in Persian. It is hoped that the results of this study will be illuminating for raising cultural awareness.

This study was designed in order to explain the socio- cultural relationship between the wedding invitation card created by graphic designers in Yogyakarta; to reveal the contained symbolic meanings; and to examine the considerations of which the designers decided to use certain visual composition in creating their artworks and why they did it. Hermeneutic theoretical framework was applied to accomplish the research objectives. The first step done was construing the wedding invitation cards and describing the artists' life and cultural background. The invitations then were studied by exploring its' 'socio historical elements', analyzing it visually and ended by interpreting it. This study found out that wedding invitation cards created by graphic designers in Yogyakarta were works of art that could be distinguished from the common ones which were made in a mass production. Wedding invitation card was an effect of 'inviting culture' transformation in Javanese society, from inviting verbally to inviting by written invitation. However, it did not mean that the verbal invitation tradition was vanishing. The socio- cultural relationship existed in wedding card was due to the changing in the customs and manners of inviting people. In the cards made by graphic designer artists, the socio- cultural relationship is not reflected in its visual aspects. When it does, it would be managed and adapted in such a way to meet the artists' aesthetic base that they mastered from their academic experience, i.e. Western aesthetic. The creation of visual artworks was determined by the creative process undertaken by the designers. Yet, each piece of work of visual art basically was conformed the creator's style as a mean to represent the couple and to represent his own authenticity as a graphic designer. Invitations are usually printed at a certain amount and sent to relatives and friends to various parts of the city and even the country. “Your Presence at Our Wedding Is Present Enough”: Lies, Coding, Maintaining Personal Face, and the Cash Gift

In the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, the word presentation— signifying a cash wedding gift as an alternative to material objects, and usually stated on the lower right-hand corner of the wedding invitation— has become recognized, if somewhat controversial, across class, linguis- tic, and ethnocultural boundaries. Both implicit and complicit coding methods overshadow or disguise the transactional nature of the cash gift in order to make the request more polite. Presentation is echoed in such forms as rhymed cash requests and themed receptacles, which likewise disrupt the economistic undertones of the cash gift while maintaining the personal face of the wedded couple and their guests. We argue that such customs offer layered codes that not only reinforce the taboo on requesting cash, but critique capitalism's invasion of this rite of passage and its associated events.

Heather Loya started her custom designed wedding invitations business in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack, when she was no longer comfortable commuting to New York City from New Jersey for her corporate job. In the ensuing years, her business picked up to the extent that she was making a reasonable income from it. She was due to become a first time mother in July 2007. Her impending motherhood made her realize that she would not be able to work long hours in her one-person business after the birth of her child. She had started a webbased business that was set up to sell wedding invitation accessories (such as boxes, ribbons, etc.) procured from various vendors. This business was expected to take less of her time as compared to the custom business, but the custom business made better use of her creative talents. Heather now had to make a decision whether to emphasize the web-based business to compensate for the likely decrease in revenues from her custom business (because of motherhood) or to just continue her custom business in a scaled down form.

Expected utility theory and prospect theory: one wedding and a decent funeral

Choice behavior is typically evaluated by assuming that the data is generated by one latent decision-making process or another. What if there are two (or more) latent decision-making processes generating the observed choices? Some choices might then be better characterized as being generated by one process, and other choices by the other process. A finite mixture model can be used to estimate the parameters of each decision process while simultaneously estimating the probability that each process applies to the sample. We consider the canonical case of lottery choices in a laboratory experiment and assume that the data is generated by expected utility theory and prospect theory decision rules. We jointly estimate the parameters of each theory as well as the fraction of choices characterized by each. The methodology provides the wedding invitation, and the data consummates the ceremony followed by a decent funeral for the representative agent model that assumes only one type of decision process. The evidence suggests support for each theory, and goes further to identify under what demographic domains one can expect to see one theory perform better than the other. We therefore propose a reconciliation of the debate over two of the dominant theories of choice under risk, at least for the tasks and samples we consider. The methodology is broadly applicable to a range of debates over competing theories generated by experimental and non-experimental data.

Qualitative methods were used to identify characteristics of "passionately committed psychotherapists" (experienced psychotherapists who would describe themselves as having found the vocation that suits them better than any other) identified by peers in the Utah public mental health system. Six themes were identified by all 15 interviewees: balance between work and nonwork passions, adaptiveness and openness, transcendence (the belief that the practice of psychotherapy has extraordinary significance), intentional learning, personal fit with the role, and passion-supporting beliefs. These are characteristics that psychotherapists should nurture in themselves, that program supervisors should seek in potential employees, and that training programs should develop in trainees.

Religious affiliations and masculine power in Jordanian wedding invitation genre

The present study examines through a genre and critical discourse analysis a total of 200 Arabic written wedding invitations in terms of their component patterns, and the role played by the broader socio-cultural norms and values in shaping this genre. It draws on two analytic frameworks from discourse: genre analysis, and critical discourse analysis (CDA). CDA has exposed at least two interrelated aspects of culture - religion and masculine authority - that have a fundamental effect on the organizational details of this communicative event, and a detailed genre analysis has identified eight generic components that are ritually drawn upon in the process of wedding invitation production. CDA results have shown how religious affiliation and masculine kinship authority not only construct and shape text component selection but also color the lexical choices and naming practices. I hope that the results of this study will be of help in further understanding the socio-cultural aspects that constrain the communicative behavior of the target language speakers, and in providing cross-cultural contrast in intercultural communication.

Introducing Genre Analysis Using Brunei Malay Wedding Invitations

Despite a significant increase in the number of published genre analyses and a continuing refinement of genre theory, little research has been done to determine the effectiveness of genre-based pedagogy. Research that has been carried out has shown mixed results. One problem that has been identified is that a genre approach requires language learners to become genre analysts in a foreign or second language while having to learn the new language itself. One suggested solution is to prime learners for this dual approach by providing an opportunity for them to study a well-known genre in their mother tongue in order to stimulate access to their subconscious knowledge of their own language and culture. This paper aims to evaluate this solution by determining to what extent Bruneian students in a tertiary context were able to identify and explain the linguistic features of the Brunei Malay Wedding Invitation. The results show that while the students were able to accurately describe the surface linguistic features of the genre, they were less successful at explaining the use of these features in terms of the communicative purposes of the genre.
