Skills Required of Academics to Use Digital Technologies in Open Distance Learning Institutions

AbstractIn this paper, we discuss the skills required for academics to effectively utilize digital technologies within open distance learning institutions in South Africa. The growing prevalence of activities within these institutions has led to shifts in academic skill requirements, particularly as academics increasingly work remotely from home or in distant areas. Core academic responsibilities such as teaching and learning, research, academic citizenship, and community engagement have undergone various transformations. Drawing from the practical experiences and insights of the authors, who have extensive backgrounds in open distance learning, it becomes evident that many academics encounter challenges in adapting to and adopting digital technologies for their work. We utilized both quantitative and qualitative research methods in this study. We found out that key skills of adaptability in workplace learning, proficiency in innovative technologies, development of new module strategies, and effective time management are fundamental for academics working in open distance learning institutions. Various digital tools such as learning management systems, iPads, computers, audio/video conferencing, multimedia, online learning platforms, web-based management systems, webinars, and applications like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and WhatsApp are prevalently used, with emerging technologies like Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence, and machine learning gaining influence. These technologies have significantly enhanced teaching, research, and social networking within academic contexts. The study recommends the importance of reskilling among academics to ensure proficiency in utilizing contemporary digital tools for improved service delivery.

Development of a Framework to Implement a Web-Based Thesis Management System in Colleges of Education in Nigeria

This study investigates the challenges of the manual thesis management process in colleges of education in Nigeria and explores the potential benefits and barriers to adopting a web-based thesis management system. This study employed a mixed-methods research design and data were collected through questionnaire and interview. The findings highlight the need for automation to improve efficiency and consistency. Despite the identified advantages of a web-based system, such as streamlined processes, enhanced communication, and improved quality control, the study also uncovered significant barriers to adoption. These include underdeveloped IT infrastructure, limited human resources, high implementation costs, and resistance to change. The study emphasizes the importance of institutional readiness, with a focus on improving internet connectivity, expanding IT resources, and securing external funding to address financial constraints. A framework for adoption is proposed, encompassing key stages such as assessment and planning, technical requirements, training and support, and continuous monitoring and evaluation. The study concludes that a web-based thesis management system can greatly enhance the efficiency and quality of thesis processes if implemented with proper resource allocation, training, and long-term sustainability planning.

Development of a Web-Based Educational Management System for a Technology Vocational High School in Banda Aceh, Indonesia

This study explores developing and implementing a web-based Management Information System (MIS) tailored for SMK Negeri 2 Banda Aceh, a vocational school in Indonesia. To enhance administrative efficiency and address unique challenges in vocational education, the system centralizes tasks such as attendance tracking, academic record management, and internship coordination. Employing the waterfall model, this project proceeded through structured phases, including requirements analysis, system design, development, and usability testing. A sample of 50 users, comprising students, teachers, and school operators, evaluated the system based on usability, interface design, and information clarity through a questionnaire, yielding high satisfaction scores. Reliability testing and correlation analysis revealed strong internal consistency across questionnaire items and identified critical factors influencing user satisfaction, such as interface appeal and effective error resolution. The results indicate that the system meets core user needs and contributes to a streamlined, user-friendly school management process. With implementation planning, user training, and ongoing maintenance, this MIS offers a sustainable solution that can serve as a model for vocational schools across Indonesia, showcasing the potential of digital solutions in advancing educational administration and supporting career readiness in vocational education.

Safety of the bivalent COVID-19 mRNA booster vaccination among persons aged over 18 years in the Republic of Korea.

The aim of this study was to disseminate information about the safety of bivalent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mRNA booster vaccines administered to adults in the Republic of Korea. Two databases were used to assess the safety of COVID-19 booster doses of Pfizer BA.1, Pfizer BA.4/5, Moderna BA.1, and Moderna BA.4/5 vaccines for adults aged 18 years and older. Adverse events (AEs) were analyzed using data reported to the web-based COVID-19 vaccination management system (CVMS) and a self-reported text-message survey. Between October 11, 2022 and March 30, 2023, the CVMS received reports of 2,369 (93.7%) non-serious AEs from vaccinated adults, along with 158 (6.3%) serious AEs, which included 5 cases of anaphylaxis and 33 deaths. From October 11, 2022 to January 27, 2023, 40,022 people aged 18 and older responded to a survey conducted via text message. The booster doses were associated with fewer local and systemic AEs compared to the original vaccines. After receiving the bivalent vaccine, the most commonly reported AEs were pain at the injection site, headache, fatigue, and myalgia. Overall, bivalent vaccines exhibited fewer AEs compared to the original vaccines. The majority of AEs were non-serious, and serious AEs were rare among adults aged 18 years and older following vaccination with the Pfizer and Moderna bivalent vaccines.

Design and Testing of a Web-Based Student Information Management System

Politeknik Piksi Ganesha is an institution of higher learning located in Bandung, Indonesia, specializing in engineering and technological curricula. The research's general objective is to describe the design and implementation of the web-based Student Information Management System (SIMS) to manage student data at Politeknik Piksi Ganesha Bandung. The functional and non-functional specifications are represented using Unified Modeling Language (UML) based on broad data collection through observation, interviews, and a literature review. It also entails black-box testing, which measures the system's performance against set criteria, focusing on the output without the details of its internal workings. The significant findings indicate that SIMS enhances highly administrative processes, accuracy in data, and good communication among stakeholders by applying clear UML diagrams of the system. This successful system development meets the institution's requirements and adds to the bar for other developments within the educational technology sector. The result has also emphasized the need for practical design methodologies and testing frameworks to develop reliable information systems to improve decision-making in academic institutions. The research has contributed significantly to the discipline because it has shown how different technological innovations can alleviate the problems surrounding managing student information at higher education levels.

Advancing Parkinson's Disease Research in Canada: The Canadian Open Parkinson Network (C-OPN) Cohort.

Enhancing the interactions between study participants, clinicians, and investigators is imperative for advancing Parkinson's disease (PD) research. The Canadian Open Parkinson Network (C-OPN) stands as a nationwide endeavor, connecting the PD community with ten accredited universities and movement disorders research centers spanning, at the time of this analysis, British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec. Our aim is to showcase C-OPN as a paradigm for bolstering national collaboration to accelerate PD research and to provide an initial overview of already collected data sets. The C-OPN database comprises de-identified data concerning demographics, symptoms and signs, treatment approaches, and standardized assessments. Additionally, it collects venous blood-derived biomaterials, such as for analyses of DNA, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), and serum. Accessible to researchers, C-OPN resources are available through web-based data management systems for multi-center studies, including REDCap. As of November 2023, the C-OPN had enrolled 1,505 PD participants. The male-to-female ratio was 1.77:1, with 83% (n = 1098) residing in urban areas and 82% (n = 1084) having pursued post-secondary education. The average age at diagnosis was 60.2±10.3 years. Herein, our analysis of the C-OPN PD cohort encompasses environmental factors, motor and non-motor symptoms, disease management, and regional differences among provinces. As of April 2024, 32 research projects have utilized C-OPN resources. C-OPN represents a national platform promoting multidisciplinary and multisite research that focuses on PD to promote innovation, exploration of care models, and collaboration among Canadian scientists.

The Development of an Integrated Cloud-based System to Enhance Internship Management

The internship program is commonly imposed as the partial fulfilment of a degree at the university level. It is a platform where knowledge and theory learned in the classroom can be applied to real working environments, indirectly preparing the students for their future careers. However, the increasing complexity of managing intern attendance and performance tracking in internship programs necessitates a streamlined and efficient solution. More attention should be paid to internship programs to meet the growing competitive job market's needs and fulfil the university requirements. This paper presents the development of E-Kehadiran, a web-based management system to address these challenges. The primary objective of this system is to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of attendance tracking and logbook submissions, thereby improving the overall management of internship programs. The development process involved creating a comprehensive use case diagram to identify and define the interactions between key actors: Super Admin, Supervisor, and Intern (Student). The system features robust functionalities including user registration, secure login, attendance management and logbook handling. Initial deployment and user feedback demonstrate that E-Kehadiran significantly improves administrative processes, ensures accurate record-keeping, and facilitates effective performance monitoring by university and company supervisors. This system fosters better communication and collaboration between educational institutions and industry partners, ultimately supporting the success and development of interns.

HeritageRoots: Developing Interconnected Immersive Experiences for Cultural Preservation and Education

In this paper, we present technical implementation details, describe the virtual world procedural generation pipeline, and discuss potential uses in cultural preservation, museum exhibits, and education of HeritageRoots, an innovative software infrastructure designed for preserving indigenous narratives and oral histories. HeritageRoots consists of two interconnected systems - (1) a web-based knowledge graph (KG) data collection and management system which stores, connects, and presents indigenous traditional knowledge (ITK) in the form of narratives, myths, and testimonies from multiple cultures and languages; (2) a virtual environment rendering pipeline which utilizes large language models (LLM), Unity3D, and Meta Quest software development kit (SDK) to procedurally generate virtual worlds from the KG data. Preliminary system evaluation with Ecuadorian Kichwa narratives showed promising results in (1) academic community interest and support, (2) the possibility of developing an infrastructure capable of connecting indigenous narratives with modern scientific knowledge via KGs and (3) procedurally generating virtual worlds from KG.

Web-based human-robot collaboration digital twin management and control system

Human-robot collaboration presents a promising application in customized production. The utilization of digital twin technology, an advanced form of virtual reality interaction, is pivotal in augmenting the capabilities of human-robot collaboration by enhancing perception and interaction dynamics. Human-robot collaboration digital twins have been proposed to create collaboration strategies, simulate collaborative processes, and guarantee individual safety. Nevertheless, there remain obstacles in the implementation of digital twins within human-robot collaboration. One notable challenge involves developing a user-friendly and easily accessible digital twin management and control system that is well-suited for human-robot collaboration. The human-robot collaboration digital twin is a sophisticated system that encompasses both physical and virtual environments. Effectively managing diverse resources within this system, devising collaboration strategies, and overseeing the collaboration process is essential for the standardized utilization of digital twins in human-robot collaboration. In response to the specific requirements of digital twins in this context, a web-based system has been conceptualized and implemented for managing and controlling human-robot collaboration digital twins. The system is structured based on the browser/server architecture model. Its functional design is implemented through a modular approach. The server-side database management system chosen is MySQL, while the programming and development of the control system are carried out using the Microsoft.Net Framework 4.8 on the Visual Studio 2022 platform. The system’s functional modules are exemplified through a case study on human-robot collaborative assembly. The findings of this study offer insights that can guide the standardized management and application of digital twins within the realm of human-robot collaboration.

Enabling Precision Agriculture through a Web-Based Fertilization Management System for Nawungan Selopamioro Fruit Orchards

Precision Agriculture (PA) is an integrated farming system based on information and technology for managing agriculture to identify, analyze, and manage spatial and temporal diversity information in specific locations to obtain optimum and sustainable benefits while minimizing unwanted environmental impacts. Fertilization is one of the crucial phases in agricultural production process considering technical cultivation aspects, costs, and environmental impacts. The current fertilization process at Kebun Buah Nawungan Selopamioro (KBNS) is still conventional, so there is no standard rule in determining the fertilization dose. Therefore, a PA approach is needed to provide suitable fertilizer doses for agricultural production needs. This objective of this study was to develop of a web-based fertilizer management system, integrating with orchard management to enhance accessibility and decision-making. The system calculates fertilizer requirements by analyzing soil nutrient availability (N, P, K), cultivation area, crop type and age, and available fertilizer types. The development followed the waterfall methodology, encompassing stages from requirement analysis to system maintenance. The outcome is a web application that manages land assets, administrative activities, and fertilizer needs tailored to specific land blocks, crop characteristics, and nutrient inventories. Subsequent validation against field conditions ensures the accuracy of its recommendations. Although comprehensive testing confirmed a 100% success rate in functionality, the system currently operates within a limited scope of variables. Future enhancements are planned to incorporate broader agronomic factors, such as soil pH and texture, to augment the system's precision. Despite its limitations, this system represents a significant technological advance in precision agriculture, promising to improve fertilizer application efficiency and support sustainable farming practices.

A Web-based decision support system for sustainable urban planning and management

Urban and territorial planning processes are characterized by a high level of complexity that makes tools management dif?cult. This research presents a Web-GIS prototype for supporting urban planning and management decision-making processes towards social, economic and environmental sustainability. It is designed according to open-source technology and aims to de?ne new planning top-down and bottom-up approaches. The design criteria of this innovative platform respond to the essential principles of transferability, modularity, scalability, and data interoperability. This new tool is applied to a case study to demonstrate how it can support planners and local authorities in urban planning and management processes.

A web-based travel package management system integrated with QR code

The tourism industry is associated with people travelling either domestically or abroad, for business, social, or recreational reasons. This industry integrates numerous services and activities such as tourism organization, marketing, hotel industry, transportation services, food and beverage activities, retail stores and various other activities under one umbrella. In addition to generating income and jobs, tourism is the best way to promote the nation's image. As the economy and living conditions have improved, so too has the tourist sector, and more people are turning to vacations as a way to alleviate stress and unwind. Currently, travel agencies handle a lot of data with low efficiency and a lot of mistakes. Therefore, this study developed a comprehensive integration of QR code for package travel management system that caters to users in Malaysia, offering functionalities such as itinerary customization, QR code generation and access to essential travel information. The development of this project adopts the Waterfall Methodology, encompassing phases such as planning, requirement analysis, design, implementation and testing. The application is crafted using the Visual Studio Code. The study conducted a User Acceptance Testing (UAT) using questionnaires to evaluate the system's effectiveness and user-friendliness to thirty respondents including family members of frequent travellers and randomly selected community members. Positive feedbacks with Perceived Ease of Use (PEU) scoring 3.6, Attitude of Using (ATT) at 3.7, Perceived Usefulness (PU) scoring 3.4, and Intention to Use (IU) obtaining 3.9, were gathered from the analysis and findings that emphasizing the QR code system's potential as a cost-effective and efficient solution for travellers to monitor and optimize their travel experiences. Future work involves adding maps for easy navigation and implementing augmented reality (AR) for virtual destination previews.

Injury risks for different road users in Nepal: a secondary analysis of routinely collected crash data

Background Road traffic injuries are the 12th leading cause of mortality globally. Nepal, one of the least developed countries in the world, has a rapidly rising rate of road traffic-related morbidity and mortality. There is incomplete reporting of traffic crashes in Nepal in the last three World Health Organization global status reports on road safety. Together with poor-quality coding of crashes, essential information to inform prevention interventions or make international comparisons is lacking. Objectives The study aimed to critically analyse routinely collected traffic police data in Makwanpur district, Nepal, to identify the road user groups most likely to be involved and injured in traffic crashes in this part of the country. Design Secondary data analysis. Setting Makwanpur district, Nepal. Data sources Road traffic crash records from the District Traffic Police Office, Makwanpur, over 2 years (April 2017–March 2018 and May 2019–April 2020). Data were extracted from paper-based records onto an electronic database, and the data were analysed descriptively using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 24.0 (IBM Corporation, USA). Results There were 291 crashes recorded in 2017–8 and 435 crashes in 2019–20. Two-wheeled vehicles (motorcycles/scooters) were the most frequently involved in police-reported crashes (35.5%). For most crashes (419/726, 58%), no cause was documented in the police record. Road users involved in crashes were mostly riders or passengers of motorised two-/three-wheelers (33.4%), four-wheeled vehicles (19.9%) or buses (16.7%). Of fatal injuries, 31.2% were riders or passengers of motorised two-/three-wheelers, and 24.8% were pedestrians. Limitations The data used represent crashes reported to the traffic police and therefore underestimate the true number of crashes and injuries. At the end of the second period of study, local movement restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown limited the traffic on the roads, resulting in fewer crashes in March and April 2020. In most crash records, there were missing data, limiting the ability to determine contributory factors with confidence. Conclusion This study contributes to the evidence gap by describing crashes and mortality data by vehicle type and road user category. The findings suggest that the number and rates of crashes may be increasing over time. Action to improve the quality and completeness of data routinely collected by the traffic police is needed; a piloted web-based Road Accident Information Management System has the potential to support improved routine data collection. Future work The data indicate crashes occurring in one district over 2 years. To better understand the apparent increase in crashes, an analysis over a longer period, and over multiple districts, would be necessary. Personal Finance Management Application

The paper presents a personal finance management mobile application developed for the Android operating system. The application is in the process of trials and test deployment among selected customers. It provides opportunities for managing a personal budget, retrieval of a financial status report for a certain period, working with expenses and income, report generation and visualization through charts, and barcode scanning. The methodology for designing and implementing the developed prototype includes pre-testing and preliminary interviews with potential customers who need convenient and easy access to manage their personal finances. Extensive research has been done on the availability of similar desktop and mobile applications. Appropriate technologies have been selected for the implementation of the program logic, software part and user interface. As a result, a mobile application has been developed that provides full integration with the web-based personal finance management system, previously created by the authors. The app is open to future improvements.

UD Asia Pratama Pekanbaru, a trading company in the building industry, is facing problems in managing inventory which is still manual, causing inefficiencies and inaccurate data. This research aims to design and implement an efficient and effective web-based inventory management system. The system development method uses the Waterfall model, including requirements analysis, design, implementation and testing. Data was collected through interviews with employees and analysis of documents related to inventory. The research results show that the system developed can increase inventory management efficiency, with real-time stock management features, recording of incoming and outgoing goods, and accurate reporting. User testing and evaluation shows that the system is acceptable and meets UD Asia Pratama's needs in overcoming inventory problems.

Effect of spatial relationship between curves on crash severity at horizontal curves in a mountainous terrain

The study aimed to model the effect of spatial relationship between adjacent curves on the severity of curve-based crashes along with driver and crash causal characteristics, reflecting driver’s short-term expectancy. The crash and other associated data was retrieved from the web-based Road Accident Data Management System available in Himachal Pradesh, India, and curvature attributes were extracted using GIS. Overall, the study included 1113 curve based crashes. The driver’s perception of the sharpness of a curve was quantified as a single representative categorical factor based simultaneously on its length and radius using K-Medoid Clustering. Separate crash severity models catering to the two possible approach directions of the subject curve were developed reflecting its independent interaction with its corresponding adjacent curve in each direction. Partial Proportional Odds models were developed to overcome the predictive limitations of Ordinal and Multinomial logit models. Indicators of spatial relationship and the intensity of sharpness of the subject curve were found to be statistically significant. A sharp approach curve (radius:40–60 m) increased the risk of fatality by 2.16 times with a similar increase (2.5 times) observed for a short (length:30–60 m) adjacent curve. Adjacent curves turning in the same direction were 2.34 times more prone to fatalities. A very sharp subject curve with radius ≤ 40 m increased the risk of fatal crashes by 2.5 times, as did the short subject curves (30–60 m) (at least 3 times). Subject curves characterized by a short length and a very sharp curvature contributed relatively 3–4 times more to fatal crashes. The identified risk factors and their impact can help the relevant stakeholders to take appropriate actions and can further assist them in identifying high risk scenarios.

Digital Healthcare Innovations and Idea Management

The aim of the paper is to analyse the global demand development and funding of digital healthcare innovations and also characterise idea management trends in the digital healthcare context. Web-based idea management systems (IMS) fall in line with the growing importance of information communication technologies, the spread of open innovation and co-innovation, etc. Especially systems, which are based on the Internet during COVID-19 have become important tools in all sectors. Plus, over the last few years the changes related to digital healthcare have taken place and now in this context the questions have been raised. How could they be linked with a web-based IMS? What are digital healthcare innovation demands and funding trends? The changes in search habits for health information over the last three years have become statistically significant. The growth of funding volumes has followed these changes because both digital health care and digital therapeutics have increased much faster during pandemic times than before. The growth in 2020 compared to 2019 reached 53.9%, but in 2021 compared to 2020 it even accounted 74.7%. The Asian region and Europe have also seen a sharp increase in the leverage over the past two years, but pre-pandemic levels were significantly lower than in the United States. Average annual volumes of investments in digital health have increased by about 4.2 Bn$ per year in the USA, by about 1.2 Bn$ per year in Asia, by about 0.83 Bn$ per year in Europe and by about 0.15 Bn$ per year in other regions. Such demand and funding could boost new innovations in healthcare with web-based idea management systems by internal, external, and mixed approaches in organisations with active and passive IMS. Plus, IMS could become a tool to create innovations in product or organisational innovation.

Methodical Approach: Building a Web-Based Warehouse Management System Using the Waterfall Method

This paper presents a comprehensive methodology for developing a web-based warehouse management system (WMS) utilizing the Waterfall method. Warehouse management is a critical aspect of business operations, and the transition to web-based systems offers numerous advantages in efficiency and accessibility. By adopting the Waterfall method, which provides a structured and linear approach to software development, this study ensures a clear framework for system implementation. The system's architecture, including its use of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP, is discussed in detail, highlighting the technical aspects of the development process. Through the analysis of various diagrams, such as Use Case, Class, and Activity diagrams, the paper demonstrates the system's functionality and its potential to enhance warehouse management practices. This research contributes to the advancement of warehouse management technology, offering insights into the implementation of web-based systems using established software development methodologies.

The concept of guest service in higher education includes various aspects aimed at welcoming, providing information, and ensuring comfort for guests who come to campus. Generally, university guest registration services are still manual, through direct visits, telephone calls, emails, or letters. Manual recording uses conventional paper logs or guest books, so it takes longer and is inefficient in archiving. In addition, security problems are caused by the lack of activities to verify the identity of each visitor. This research aims to improve the quality of service in higher education by developing a web-based visitor or guest management system (Visitor Management System). This system is designed to manage visits to the campus environment efficiently and effectively. The development method used is a prototype design-build approach. This system is expected to help monitor and control visitor traffic, facilitate the registration process, and provide accurate and timely information to visitors. Thus, this web-based visitor management system can significantly improve service quality management in higher education. The object of this research is the Directorate of Education at one of the state universities in Surabaya. The research method starts with problem identification, system design, program code design, and system testing. System requirements analysis analyses service needs, constraints, and system objectives through interviews, literature studies, and field observations. This research results in the availability of a WEB-based Visitor Management System with several user functions where each user can enter data on an online form to request to be a guest.
