Investigations on implementation of web applications with different techniques

Investigations on implementation of web application with different techniques are essential for developers’ as well as users’ perspective. As such, the authors propose to investigate the same by implementing two prototype research web applications based on two different implementation techniques. One of the web applications has been implemented based on the Microsoft .NET technique and the other based on the Java technique. Our objective is to carry out a detailed comparative study of both the techniques in terms of efficiency, reliability, performance, scalability, stability and time to market features of both the techniques. Load and stress testing are performed for both the web applications using Mercury LoadRunner. The statistical analysis of recorded data for both the applications is carried out to study the feasibility of the work. In this study, the authors present in detail the results of the authors’ comparative study on the two techniques.

Cloud Computing: Case Studies and Total Cost of Ownership

This paper consists of four major sections: The first section is a literature review of cloud computing and a cost model. The next section focuses on detailed overviews of cloud computing and its levels of services: SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS. Major cloud computing providers are introduced, including Amazon Web Services (AWS),Microsoft Azure, and Google App Engine. Finally, case studies of implementing web applications on IaaS and PaaS using AWS, Linode and Google AppEngine are demonstrated. Justifications of running on an IaaS provider (AWS) and running on a PaaS provider (Google AppEngine) are described. The last section discusses costs and technology analysis comparing cloud computing with local managed storage and servers. The total costs of ownership (TCO) of an AWS small instance are significantlylower, but the TCO of a typical 10TB space in Amazon S3 aresignificantly higher. Since Amazon offers lower storage pricing for huge amounts of data, the TCO might be lower. Readers should do their own analysis on the TCOs.

Investigation on performance testing and evaluation of PReWebN: a Java technique for implementing web application

Performance testing of web application is essential from the perspective of users as well as developers, since it directly reflects the behaviour of the application. As such the authors have developed a prototype research web application based on Java technique to study the performance and to evaluate the technique used for developing the web application. The application is called as PReWebN (prototype research web application in netbeans platform). Load and stress testing have been carried out on PReWebN using Mercury LoadRunner to study the performance, stability, scalability, reliability, efficiency and cost effectiveness of the technique. The performance depends on metrics such as hits/s, response time, throughput, errors/s and transaction summary. These metrics for the application are tested with different stress levels. The statistical testing on the recorded data has been carried out to study the stability and quality of the application. The present study reveals that the web application developed with Java technique is more stable, reliable, scalable and cost effective than its other counterpart such as Microsoft .NET technology. The authors present the architecture, testing procedure, results of performance testing as well as the results of statistical testing on recorded data of PReWebN.

Investigation on performance testing and evaluation of PReWebD: a .NET technique for implementing web application

A prototype research web application based on Visual Studio platform is developed with .NET as framework, Internet Information Server (IIS) (Version: 5.1) as web server and Microsoft Standard Query Language (SQL) Server (Version: 2005) as database server to study the performance and evaluation of the .NET technique used for developing the web application. The authors call it the PReWebD. As the performance is one of the most important features of a web application, to evaluate the performance, testing of PReWebD has been carried out using Mercury LoadRunner (Version 8.0) for validation and to study some other attributes like scalability, reliability etc. The performance depends on parameters such as hits/s, response time, throughput, errors/s etc. These parameters for PReWebD are tested with different stress levels. The statistical testing and analysis is done to assure the stability, reliability and quality of the application. Here the authors report in details the architecture, testing procedure, result of performance testing as well as the results of statistical analysis on recorded data of PReWebD.

Towards generic representation of web applications: solutions and trade‐offs

AbstractServer pages (also called dynamic pages) render a generic web page into many similar ones. The technique is commonly used for implementing web application user interfaces (UIs). Yet our previous study found a high rate of repetitions (also called ‘clones’) in web applications, particularly in UIs. The finding raised the question as to why such repetitions had not been averted with the use of server pages. For an answer, we conducted an experiment using PHP server pages to explore how far server pages can be pushed to achieve generic web applications. Our initial findings suggested that generic representation obtained using server pages sometimes compromises certain important system qualities such as run‐time performance. It may also complicate the use of WYSIWYG editors. We have analysed the nature of these trade‐offs, and now propose a mixed‐strategy approach to obtain optimum generic representation of web applications without unnecessary compromise to critical system qualities and user experience. The mixed‐strategy approach applies the generative technique of XVCL to achieve genericity at the meta‐level representation of a web application, leaving repetitions to the actual web application. Our experiments show that the mixed‐strategy approach can achieve a good level of genericity without conflicting with other system qualities. Our findings should open the way for others to better‐informed decisions regarding generic design solutions, which should in turn lead to simpler, more maintainable and more reusable web applications. DaVinci ‐ A model‐driven web engineering framework

The World Wide Web has undergone a rapid transition from the originally static hypertext to an ubiquitous hypermedia system. Today, the Web is not only used as a basis for distributed applications (Web applications), moreover it serves as a generic architecture for autonomous applications and services. Many research work has been done regarding the modeling and engineering process of Web applications and various platforms, frameworks and development kits exist for the efficient implementation of such systems. Concerning the modeling process, many of the published concepts try to merge traditional hypermedia modeling with techniques from the software engineering domain. Unfortunately, those concepts which capture all facets of the Web’s architecture become rather bulky and are eventually not applicable for a model‐driven Web application development. Moreover, there is a need for frameworks which address both, the modeling process and the implementation task and allow a model driven, semi‐automatic engineering process using CASE tools. This paper outlines the DaVinci Web Engineering Framework which supports the modeling as well as the semi‐automated implementation of Web applications. The DaVinci Architectural Layer specifies a persistent, hierarchical GUI model and a generic interaction scheme. This allows the elimination of the hypermedia paradigm, which turned out to be rather practical when building Web applications.

Common web application attack types and security using ASP.NET

Web applications security is one of the most daunting tasks today, because of security shift from lower levels of ISO OSI model to application level, and because of current situation in IT environment. ASP.NET offers powerful mechanisms to render these attacks futile, but it requires some knowledge of implementing Web application security. This paper focuses on attacks against Web applications, either to gain direct benefit by collecting private information or to disable target sites. It describes the two most common Web application attacks: SQL Injection and Cross Site Scripting, and is based on author?s perennial experience in Web application security. It explains how to use ASP.NET to provide Web applications security. There are some principles of strong Web application security which make up the part of defense mechanisms presented: executing with least privileged account, securing sensitive data (connection string) and proper exception handling (where the new approach is presented using ASP.NET mechanisms for centralized exception logging and presentation). These principles help raise the bar that attacker has to cross and consequently contribute to better security.

Model-driven design and deployment of service-enabled web applications

Significant effort is currently invested in application integration, enabling business processes of different companies to interact and form complex multiparty processes. Web service standards, based on WSDL (Web Service Definition Language), have been adopted as process-to-process communication paradigms. However, the conceptual modeling of applications using Web services has not yet been addressed. Interaction with Web services is often specified at the level of the source code; thus, Web service interfaces are buried within a programmatic specification.In this article, we argue that Web services should be considered first-class citizens in the specification of Web applications. Thus, service-enabled Web applications should benefit from the high-level modeling and automatic code generation techniques that have long been advocated for Web application design and implementation. To this end, we extend a declarative model for specifying data-intensive Web applications in two directions: (i) high-level modeling of Web services and their interactions with the Web applications which use them, and (ii) modeling and specification of Web applications implementing new, complex Web services.Our approach is fully implemented within a CASE tool allowing the high-level modeling and automatic deployment of service-enabled Web applications.

Conceptual modeling of device-independent Web applications

Existing tools for building and deploying complex Web sites are inadequate for dealing with the software production process that involves connecting with underlying logic in a unified and systematic way. As a solution, we propose the OO-H method, an object-oriented software approach that captures relevant properties involved in modeling and implementing Web application interfaces.

Issues in the development and implementation of web applications for product design and manufacture

There have been considerable interests in providing the state-of-the-art product design and manufacture techniques and methods accessible on the Internet from web browsers. Many believe that the development and implementation of web applications is merely a matter of programming. While programming is undoubtedly an important step, the web technology has evolved so rapidly that it becomes difficult to select the suitable features for implementing application systems. Researchers in the field of product design and manufacture would not usually have much time and efforts to investigate the web features in great detail. Instead, they have to focus on the development of the product design and manufacture methodologies. This article aims to discuss the issues that arise in the design and implementation of such web applications. The three-tier architecture for web applications is discussed. The two most popular web technologies, i.e. ActiveX and Java, are then discussed in terms of their main constructs. The methods for the deployment of web application clients and servers are highlighted. Remote database access and connection deserve clarification because many web applications in product design and manufacture involve product, process and resource data. It is hoped that this article will assist researchers to develop their proof-of-the-concept prototype web applications for their methodologies after considering these issues discussed in this paper.

Early Supplier Involvement in New Product Development on the Internet: Implementation Perspectives

WeBid is a prototype web-based framework for supporting early supplier involvement in new product development on the Internet. It provides a suite of tools for establishing and managing the customer-supplier relationships in new product development pro cess. Through WeBid, this paper discusses the issues related to the development and implementation of web applications in product de sign and manufacture. The typical 3-tier architecture is explained to show how the main WeBid components work together to achieve the intended functionality. A number of Java features are discussed for their suitability for implementing and deploying particular application components. Various options for the connection and deployment of the remote databases are compared in terms of their strengths and limitations. The paper provides some useful guidelines for those who are interested in developing and applying web applications in prod uct design and manufacture in a supply chain or extended enterprise environment.

Intermediaries: An approach to manipulating information streams

Information flows all around us all the time. Whether on computer networks, on telephone lines, or within the wiring of everyday devices such as coffeemakers or gas pumps, data are constantly being transmitted from one place to another. Much of the time, such data flow directly between information producers and information consumers. Sometimes, however, intermediary processes stand in the way of a simple data flow, for instance, to monitor traffic, to bridge between incompatible communication streams, or to customize or extend the functions that are natively available on a stream. Intermediaries can turn ordinary information streams into smart streams that enhance the quality of communication. Because information flows are now everywhere, there is a new opportunity for taking advantage of intermediary computation, but general principles and approaches have not yet been developed. This paper provides an introduction to the intermediary approach, describes an implemented Web intermediary framework and applications, and proposes extending intermediaries to other information streams.
