Spatial and mode selective switch for orbital angular momentum mode division multiplexing.

In analogy to a wavelength selective switch in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) optical fiber communication systems, a spatial and optical mode selective switch (SMSS) would be an important component in future ultrahigh capacity optical fiber communication systems based on space and mode division multiplexing. In this work, a free-space SMSS for orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The SMSS consists of a separating part for transforming OAM modes to spatial modes and a recombining part for selecting and recombining the modes to any spatial channel. The SMSS is able to implement strictly non-blocking switching between a total of 36 SDM/MDM channels configured as four spatial channels each supporting nine OAM mode channels.

Beam swinging coherent Doppler wind lidar utilizing wavelength switching through a single telescope.

We have developed a new, to the best of our knowledge, beam swinging coherent Doppler wind lidar (BS-CDWL) by employing a wavelength switching method using mass-produced components for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication systems. This BS-CDWL also has a single and position-to-angle conversion telescope for multiple LOS measurement which contributes to cost-effectiveness. Preliminary wind sensing result is shown with measurable range of up to 350 m.

Wavelength-interval switchable Brillouin–Raman random fiber laser through Brillouin pump manipulation

Abstract A wavelength-interval switchable Brillouin–Raman random fiber laser (BRRFL) based on Brillouin pump (BP) manipulation is proposed in this paper. The proposed wavelength-interval switchable BRRFL has a full-open cavity configuration, featuring multiwavelength output with wavelength interval of double Brillouin frequency shifts. Through simultaneously injecting the BP light and its first-order stimulated Brillouin-scattered light into the cavity, the laser output exhibits a wavelength interval of single Brillouin frequency shift. The wavelength-interval switching effect can be manipulated by controlling the power of the first-order stimulated Brillouin scattering light. The experimental results show the multiwavelength output can be switched between double Brillouin frequency shift multiwavelength emission with a broad bandwidth of approximately 60 nm and single Brillouin frequency shift multiwavelength emission of 44 nm. The flexible optically controlled random fiber laser with switchable wavelength interval makes it useful for a wide range of applications and holds significant potential in the field of wavelength-division multiplexing optical communication.

4*10 Gbps WDM communication system based on a tunable V-cavity semiconductor laser.

This paper is about the V-cavity tunable semiconductor laser with a 1550 nm band used as a transmitter to build a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical fiber communication link. In the experiment, a 20 km optical fiber communication link with a reasonable eye diagram and low bit error rate (BER) transmitted by 40 Gbps can be established. The experimental results show that a single laser can achieve a wavelength tuning range of 25 nm, reach 32 channels at a 100 GHz frequency interval, and the average side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is above 39 dB. The advantages and application potential of V-cavity tunable semiconductor laser (VCL) for wavelength routing in optical communication networking are verified by experiments.

Design and Performance Analysis of Simple WDM Optical Fiber Communication System

WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) is used in this project to simultaneously send data over several channels at high speed. Single mode fiber is favored over Multimode fiber for long-distance communication. As data rate and optical fiber length grow, the quality factor falls. Dispersion effects on an 8-channel dense WDM system at a high data rate will be examined using the Optisystem 10 simulator. A dispersion compensation fiber (DCF) and an Erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) are used to compensate for the dispersion and attenuation in the transmitted optical signal, respectively. Bit error rate (BER) and eye diagram analyzers were used to evaluate the optical communication system's performance.

Machine learning‐based regression models for predicting signal quality of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical communication network

SummaryOver the years, optical communication systems have been a significant source of fast and secure communication. However, factors like noise and mitigation error can degrade the bit error rate (BER) and quality factor (Q factor) of optical communication systems. Predicting the optimal threshold, Q factor, and BER is usually a difficult task. Therefore, in this paper, machine learning‐based linear regression, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression, and Ridge regression have been used for a dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM)‐based optical communication network to predict the signal quality. These techniques have been used to predict the desired BER, Q factor, threshold, and eye height of the system. To demonstrate this research concept, a DWDM‐based optical communication network of 50 km length is designed and simulated using Optisystem‐14.0. After data preparation, regression models have been developed and validated through diagnostic plots. Results show that mean square error (MSE) has a significant decline with an increase in the number of epochs for all four models. LASSO and Ridge regression have effectively resolved the issue of overfitting, which occurred in the linear regression case. Furthermore, the mean MSE plot proved the significant reduction of mean MSE in the case of LASSO regression. Results show that min BER for LASSO regression came out to be −173,627.14, providing a robust and cost‐efficient process.

Performance Investigation of DP-16QAM Ultra-wideband- Wavelength-Division Multiplexing Communication System: Optimum Power Consideration

Recently, there is increasing interest in using the 18 THz bandwidth offered by S+C+L band to increase the transmission capacity of fiber communication systems. This leads to the generation of ultra-wideband (UWB) wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication systems. In these advanced systems, stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) causes a power transfer from high-frequency channels to low-frequency channels. This effect leads to an increase in the nonlinear interference (NLI) between the UWB-WDM channels. Power optimization techniques are required to balance transfer power between band channels, thus increasing the maximum transmission reach (MTR) along with increasing system capacity. In this paper, the transmission performance of S+C+L band system operating with dual-polarization 16-QAM signaling is investigated using enhanced Gaussian noise model. The transmitter and receiver for each DP channel use a -polarized laser and incorporate two identical configurations, one for x- and the other for y-state of polarization (SOP). The results are presented for two values of symbol rate, 40 and 80 GBaud, where the system carries 360 (=160+80+120) and 180 (=80+40+60) channels, respectively. The results revel that the MTR of both cases is equal to 12 100 km-spans when the channel lunch power equals to -4 and -2 dBm, respectively. This work also shows the effect of NLI components as a function of the number of spans, channel spacing, and channel launch power. The results show that the cross-phase modulation component of the NLI has high accumulated value with transmission distance, while the self-phase modulation component is almost constant.

Polarization-independent wavelength demultiplexer based on a single etched diffraction grating device

Polarization-compatible receivers are indispensable in transceivers used for wavelength division multiplexing optical communications, as light polarization is unpredictable after transmission through network fibers. However, the strong waveguide birefringence makes it difficult to realize a polarization-independent wavelength demultiplexer in a silicon photonic receiver. Here, we utilized the birefringence effect for simultaneously demultiplexing wavelengths and polarizations, and experimentally demonstrated a polarization-independent wavelength demultiplexer with a single device on a SiPh platform. The principle was validated on an etched diffraction grating, which successfully split the arbitrarily polarized light containing four wavelengths into eight channels with single-polarization and single-wavelength signals. Polarization-dependent losses of 0.5–1.8 dB, minimum insertion loss of 0.5 dB, and crosstalks lower than −30 dB were experimentally measured for the fabricated etched diffraction grating. Thus, a promising general solution was developed for implementing polarization-independent wavelength division multiplexing receivers and other polarization-independent devices on photonics platforms with birefringent waveguide devices.

Octave-Spanning Optical Frequency Comb Generation Using a Directly-Modulated Microlaser Source

A coherent optical frequency comb with a gigahertz line spacing is important in diverse fields, such as calibration of astronomical spectrographs and wavelength division multiplexing optical communications. In this paper, we realize octave-spanning 10-GHz optical combs using a directly-modulated 1.55 μm microlaser as a seeding source. A 6.4 ps transform-limited pulse is successfully generated from the directly-modulated laser output through optimal chirp compensation in a fiber. Moreover, after amplifying by an EDFA, the optical pulse width is further reduced to 140 fs by combing the self-phase modulation effect and the anomalous group velocity dispersion in commercial fibers. Finally, a coherent optical comb spanning from 900-2400 nm is produced in a home-made fluorotellurite fiber using the 140-fs pulse boosted to a few Watts as a seeding source. The experimental results demonstrate that optical combs generated from the directly-modulated microlaser have the potential for a fully stabilized frequency comb.

10.83 Tb/s Over 800 Km Nonlinear Frequency Division Multiplexing WDM Transmission

Nonlinear frequency division multiplexing (NFDM) transmission scheme has attracted great interest in optical fiber communication systems due to its potential for surpassing the Kerr nonlinearity limit. There have been very active studies on single-channel NFDM transmission systems recently. However, up to now, few experiments have validated the feasibility of applying NFDM into wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication systems toward high-capacity transmission for wideband coverage. Moreover, the overall performance of the NFDM system is restricted due to many challenges in theoretical design and practical implementation. Novel neural network-based equalization methods contribute to eliminating multi-dimensional crosstalk, hence prompting the NFDM system performance. In this article, we experimentally demonstrate a high-capacity NFDM-WDM transmission system enabled by the newly developed digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms. With data modulation on the continuous spectrum in nonlinear frequency domain, a 25-channel WDM system with polarization division multiplexing (PDM) 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) transmitting over 800 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) is successfully achieved. To mitigate the undesirable correlations between the nonlinear continuous spectral components, a nonlinear spectrum equalization scheme based on artificial neural network (ANN) is utilized in the receiver side DSP. Through this ANN-based spectrum equalization, a 0.63 dB Q <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> -factor gain is achieved compared to the conventional equalization scheme. A record transmission capacity of 10.83 Tb/s is achieved in a 25-channel WDM system over 800 km SSMF, with a remarkable single-channel line rate of 433.3 Gb/s. Our work reports the highest capacity NFDM-WDM transmission up to date and helps to further explore the inherent ability of NFDM to resist fiber channel nonlinearity.

Fast and Accurate Waveform Modeling of Long-Haul Multi-Channel Optical Fiber Transmission Using a Hybrid Model-Data Driven Scheme

The modeling of optical wave propagation in optical fiber is a task of fast and accurate solving the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE), and can enable the optical system design, digital signal processing verification and fast waveform calculation. Traditional waveform modeling of full-time and full-frequency information is the split-step Fourier method (SSFM), which has long been regarded as challenging in long-haul wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical fiber communication systems because it is extremely time-consuming. Here we propose a linear-nonlinear feature decoupling distributed (FDD) waveform modeling scheme to model long-haul WDM fiber channel, where the channel linear effects are modelled by the NLSE-derived model-driven methods and the nonlinear effects are modelled by the data-driven deep learning methods. Meanwhile, the proposed scheme only focuses on one-span fiber distance fitting, and then recursively transmits the model to achieve the required transmission distance. The proposed modeling scheme is demonstrated to have high accuracy, high computing speeds, and robust generalization abilities for different optical launch powers, modulation formats, channel numbers and transmission distances. The total running time of FDD waveform modeling scheme for 41-channel 1040-km fiber transmission is only 3 minutes versus more than 2 hours using SSFM for each input condition, which achieves a 98% reduction in computing time. Considering the multi-round optimization by adjusting system parameters, the complexity reduction is significant. The results represent a remarkable improvement in nonlinear fiber modeling and open up novel perspectives for solution of NLSE-like partial differential equations and optical fiber physics problems.

Silicon photonic flat-top WDM (de)multiplexer based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometers for the 2 µm wavelength band.

The 2 µm wavelength band has proven to be a promising candidate for the next communication window. Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission at 2 µm can greatly increase the capacity of optical communication systems. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a high-performance silicon photonic flat-top 8-channel WDM (de)multiplexer based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometers for the 2 µm wavelength band. A three-stage-coupler scheme is utilized to provide passbands and reduce channel crosstalk, and 11 thermo-optic phase shifters have allowed active compensation of waveguide phase errors. The fabricated device shows low insertion loss (< 0.9 dB), channel crosstalk (< 20.6 dB) and 1-dB bandwidth of 2.3 nm for operating wavelength ranging from 1955nm to 1985nm. The demonstrated (de)multiplexer could potentially be used for WDM optical data communication in the 2 µm spectral band.

Numerical studying of broadband tunable dispersion compensation based on photonic crystal fiber

We propose a broadband tunable negative dispersion photonic crystal fiber (BT-ND-PCF) for dispersion compensation over the S + C + L wavelength bands. BT-ND-PCF is a dual-core structure in which air holes are arranged with a hexagonal lattice and temperature-sensitive liquid is infiltrated into the air holes of the fourth layer. The performance of BT-ND-PCF is numerically analyzed by the finite element method with an anisotropic perfect matching layer. The results show that BT-ND-PCF has a broadband negative dispersion coefficient of −1533.2 to −2836.4 ps / km / nm over the S + C + L wavelength bands, a dispersion coefficient of −2268.9 ps / km / nm at 1550 nm, and a kappa value of 287.9 nm at 1550 nm, which matches with Corning single-mode fiber 28 (SMF). The residual dispersion (RD) after compensating for the dispersion of 1 km SMF is in the range of −0.22 to +0.16 ps / nm. In addition, the dispersion coefficient is changed by 0.679 ps/km/nm per 1°C by controlling the temperature, which is conducive to the accurate compensation of RD. Due to its unique optical properties, BT-ND-PCF can be used in broadband dispersion compensation for dense wavelength division multiplexing optical fiber communication systems.

A photonic integrated circuit-based erbium-doped amplifier.

Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers revolutionized long-haul optical communications and laser technology. Erbium ions could provide a basis for efficient optical amplification in photonic integrated circuits but their use remains impractical as a result of insufficient output power. We demonstrate a photonic integrated circuit-based erbium amplifier reaching 145 milliwatts of output power and more than 30 decibels of small-signal gain-on par with commercial fiber amplifiers and surpassing state-of-the-art III-V heterogeneously integrated semiconductor amplifiers. We apply ion implantation to ultralow-loss silicon nitride (Si3N4) photonic integrated circuits, which are able to increase the soliton microcomb output power by 100 times, achieving power requirements for low-noise photonic microwave generation and wavelength-division multiplexing optical communications. Endowing Si3N4 photonic integrated circuits with gain enables the miniaturization of various fiber-based devices such as high-pulse-energy femtosecond mode-locked lasers.

Third-Order-Reflective Hybrid Interleaver Based on Fabry-Perot Assisted Michelson Interferometer

We present the design and experimental demonstration of a 3rd-order-reflective hybrid interleaver based on Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity assisted Michelson interferometer (FPA-MI), in which the FP cavity consists of two cascade Sagnac loop reflectors (SLRs). Through comparison, it can be seen that the flatness and rectangularity of interleaver are increased with the increase of order. When the transmission coefficient of the variable SLR is 0.1975 or 0.98, the performance of the interleaver is the best under the lossless condition. The influence of loss and transmission coefficient on the flatness of the interleaver can be evaluated by the dispersion model when the loss is considered, and when the dispersion range is 0.911, the flatness of the interleaver is the best. The reflective FPA-MI interleaver, due to its superior performance, will provide a more promising application in dense wavelength division multiplexing optical communication systems.

Performance Evaluation of WDM Optical Fiber Communication System in the presence of PMD

This paper investigates for rising optical fiber transmission strength, increasing bandwidth, and decreasing communication system weakness by using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). WDM gives today's distention speed and communication traffic. Systems using WDM faces nonlinearities, which the most intensive nonlinear attack is, four wave mixing (FWM). FWM creates and increases crosstalk between WDM channels as a result slows down and impairs the performance of the communication system. This investigation uses orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for evaluating execution of WDM fiber system by repairing Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD). We took results in the case of trying PMD-Emulator and without trying PMD-Emulator in the system design. We compared the results got in both cases. Furthermore, we compared the performance of the system with the investigations done using different ways, methods, and techniques for compensating PMD and FWM appears in WDM systems. As PMD-Emulator, helps enhancing the system design performance, and OFDM gives the feature of robustness and useful execution to the system. OFDM examined by appointing interfered orthogonal signal sets, for 16 channels; with equally spaced OFDM channels. Oure results showed that the optical fiber communication system using OFDM technique gives perfect removing FWM signal crosstalk, and accurate data transmission, comparing to other techniques used in other researches. We got a decreased FWM power to -77dBm, and the BER of -0.317. Furthermore, the system quality increased with applying PMD-Emulator and OFDM. In addition, using PMD-Emulator in the system design raised the results effectiveness. The program used in the present work is optisystem-15, and the results obtained in this study coincide with the theoretical and actual results obtained by the previous studies.

A novel quadruple-spaced multiwavelength Brillouin-erbium fiber laser

We demonstrated a compact multiwavelength Brillouin-erbium fiber laser (MBEFL) with quadruple-Brillouin-frequency spacing. The quadruple-Brillouin-frequency spacing multiwavelength is generated mainly by utilizing two four-port circulators, two coils of single-mode fiber and two erbium gain modules. The generated multiwavelength spectra were investigated through adjusting the Brillouin pump (BP) and the 980 nm pumps. In the experiments, eight stable wavelengths were produced and the wavelength spacing was 0.348 nm (about 43.5 GHz) as the wavelength and the power of the BP were 5 mW and 1548.11 nm respectively, meanwhile the two 980 nm pumps’ powers were 470 mW and 520 mW respectively. The output multiwavelength can be tuned from 1546.12 nm to 1561.01 nm, and the maximum optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of the output channel was about 37 dB. The average OSNR of the stable multiwavelength was about 27 dB. The proposed stable and wider channel spaced MBEFL has diverse applications in dense wavelength division multiplexing optical communication, microwave photonics and fiber-optic sensors.

Up to 50 Gb/s modulation of an EAM integrated widely tunable DBR laser

An electro-absorption modulator (EAM) integrated widely tunable distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser working at 1.5 µm is reported. By utilizing the RF resonance between the bonding wire and the EAM, a 28 GHz modulation bandwidth is obtained. The device is modulated with up to 50 Gb/s NRZ data. At 28 Gb/s, the power penalty to obtain a 10-10 bit error rate (BER) after a 5 Km standard single mode fiber transmission is less than 0.7 dB. Because the DBR material has a long bandgap wavelength, the wavelength tuning range of the laser is larger than 12 nm. The DBR laser is a promising low cost tunable light source for future high capacity wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication systems.

Polymer waveguide tunable transceiver for photonic front-end in the 5G wireless network

A photonic front-end in the 5G wireless network based on wavelength-division multiplexing optical communication requires low-cost tunable transceivers. By exploiting polymer waveguide Bragg-grating technology, we propose a tunable transceiver consisting of an external cavity tunable laser and a tilted grating tunable filter. In particular, a double-reflection tunable filter provides narrower reflection bandwidth and suppresses undesired mode coupling, improving the side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) and reducing adjacent-channel crosstalk. By introducing perfluorinated polymers with low birefringence, polarization independence, which is a prerequisite for wavelength filter elements, is secured, and 20 dB bandwidth of 0.69 nm, wavelength tunability over 40 nm, and SMSR of 42 dB are achieved.
