A novel bidirectional add/drop module using waveguide grating routers and wavelength channel matched fiber gratings

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel bidirectional add/drop module for single-fiber bidirectional self-healing wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) ring networks. The key components of this module are waveguide grating routers (WGRs) and fiber gratings. Using two circulators, the bidirectional fiber link is transformed into two separated unidirectional transmission paths within the module. The module can operate in two different WDM schemes: nonoverlapping scheme and overlapping scheme. The feasibility of these operation schemes has been confirmed by the experimental results.

Polarization insensitive waveguide grating routers in InP

We demonstrate a 16-channel waveguide grating router (WGR) in the InP-based material system. The channel spacing of the WGRs is 100 GHz and the maximum interchannel crosstalk is -28 dB. The polarization related (TE-TM modal) wavelength shift is approximately 0.08 nm and the polarization dependent variation in peak signal is less than 0.2 dB. 2.60-/spl mu/m-wide /spl times/1.90-/spl mu/m-thick raised-stripe InGaAsP Quaternary (/spl lambda//sub g/=1.17 /spl mu/m) waveguides on an n-type InP substrate make up the basis paths of the WGR. In this letter, we describe the design, fabrication and the results of measurement of the 16-channel polarization-insensitive WGR.

Wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network based on spectrum-slicing techniques

We propose and demonstrate a new wavelength division-multiplexed (WDM) passive optical network (PON) architecture that uses N×N waveguide grating routers (WGRs) in the remote node and central office for simultaneous multiplexing and demultiplexing of N-1 channels in each direction. In the demonstrated network, a spectrum-sliced fiber amplifier light source was used to transmit 15 downstream channels operating at 500 Mb/s. The 155-Mb/s upstream channels used 1.5-μm LED's. In addition, an erbium-doped fiber amplifier was used at the, central office to compensate the slicing losses of low-power LED's. The crosstalk, caused by using WGR's for both multiplexing and demultiplexing channels, was suppressed to a negligible level by using two types of bandpass filters. There was no significant degradation in the receiver sensitivity caused by this crosstalk.

High-speed point-to-point and multiple broadcast services delivered over a WDM passive optical network

Tailoring broad optical sources to the free spectral range of a waveguide-grating router, we show that multiple independent broadcast services can be delivered efficiently over a common wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (PON). In addition to 1) delivering two independent video services, each comprising 80 digital video channels, we further exploit the periodicity property of the router to simultaneously deliver; 2) bidirectional 50-Mb/s baseband conventional PON service; 3) a limited (50 channel) digital broadcast video service; and 4) an individual 2.5-Gb/s bidirectional link to a "business" subscriber, demonstrating several distinct upgrade paths. Bit-error-rate performance and dispersion measurements are presented.

Dispersion-Compensation Device with Waveguide Grating Routers

A compact transmissive waveguide-type dispersion compensation device that uses waveguide grating routers is proposed. This device provides dispersion compensation in long-haul fiber transmission lines and can also be used as a pulse compressor for ultrashort optical pulse generation. A device for the pulse compression of picosecond-length optical pulses has been designed and is numerically analyzed. The proposed device works as a compact (on the centimeter order) and transmissive pulse compressor for picosecond optical pulses.

Waveguide grating routers for dispersionless filtering in WDM system at channel rate of 10 Gbit/s

Waveguide grating routers (WGRs) are shown to be dispersionless optical filters. A system experiment at a data rate of 10 Gbit/s confirms that the dispersive penalty due to such a filter is negligible. Furthermore, since WGRs are inherently linear phase filters, in principle, arbitrarily square and dispersionless filters may be designed.

Passive optical network architecture based on waveguide grating routing

We explore an optical network architecture which employs dense wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology and passive waveguide grating routers (WGRs) to establish a virtual topology based on lightpath communication. We examine the motivation and the technical challenges involved in this approach, propose and examine the characteristics of a network design algorithm, and provide some illustrative performance results.

Demonstration of a 12 x 155 Mb/s WDM PON under outside plant temperature conditions

A 12-channel wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) passive optical network (PON) at 155 Mb/s with 63 km of standard single-mode fiber (SMF) was demonstrated under simulated outside plant temperature conditions. A multifrequency laser (MFL) was used as the transmitter and a waveguide grating router (WGR) as the demultiplexer. A 20/spl deg/C/h temperature change of the WGR could be tracked by changing the MFL temperature and resulted in a power penalty in the detected bit-error rate (BER) of less than 0.75 dB. A scheme to increase the tracking sensitivity by multiple WGR passes is demonstrated.

Parallel-optical-interconnecting multiwavelengthstar network (POIMS Net) for high-capacity switching

The POIMS Net is a multiple-fibre star network that combines optical space-, time-, and wavelength-division techniques to provide n/spl times/n cell switching with port bandwidth >10 Gbit/s, and sub-Tbit/s total capacity. An implementation with arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) routers and semiconductor electroabsorption gate switches demonstrates cell switching at 10 Gbit/s/port.

12 frequency WDM laser based on a transmissive waveguidegrating router

A digitally tunable laser that is based on a 12*12 waveguide grating router integrated with semiconductor optical amplifiers is demonstrated. The device emits on 12 wavelengths spaced exactly by 3.2 nm. ASE and sidemodes are suppressed by more than 40 dB. This laser is suitable for simultaneous multifrequency operation.
