The role of safety leadership in nursing management during the pandemic

Frontline nurses experiences about human caring during pandemic of COVID-19: A directed content analysis study.

This study aims to investigate experiences of frontline nurses about human caring during COVID-19 pandemic based on the Ten Caritas Processes® of Watson's Human Caring Theory. A directed content analysis was performed. A total of 15 frontline nurses were recruited by purposive sampling from Razi hospital (north of Iran), in 2020 and semi-structured interviews were conducted. Extracted categories based on Ten Caritas Processes® included feeling satisfied in providing care to patients, effective presence with patients, moving towards self-actualization (moving towards transcendence), care with trust and compassion, experience positive and negative emotions, creativity in providing care, self-directing learning experience in the field of care, unfavourable environment for providing care, feeling acceptance and worth, uncertainty (facing the unknown). This study showed that communication skills, self-sensitivity, patient dignity, teaching-learning and problem-solving skills, holistic attention to the patient, and the provision of a healing environment are necessary for patient care.

Preferred Self-Care Behaviors of Participants Who Have Completed a Caring Science Online Course

Participant narratives from open discussion boards within a Caring Science, Mindful Practice Massive Open Online Course were analyzed to determine preferred self-care activities, and the degree to which course content supported the creation of self-care goals. Although the course explores different ways to apply Watson's Human Caring Theory, the data collected were focused on self-care activities reported by the course participants. Identifying preferred activities among participants may help facilitate self-care education for those interested in a Caring Science based approach to self-care. The focal points of the data were analyzed to assess whether participants focused on improving work-life or home-life.

Nursing Administration: Watson's Theory of Human Caring.

Watson's human caring theory is widely used in nursing clinical practice, education, and research; however, further discussion on the application of this theory in administration is needed. The authors in this article aim to substruct Watson's theory of human caring for nursing administration. Major elements of the theory-transpersonal caring dimensions, caring competencies, and caring moments-are presented in a model of substruction that links the theoretical basis to methodology. In conclusion, this theory can be used as a framework or a conceptual model in nursing administration within an organization.

The effects of clinical education program based on Watson's theory of human caring on coping and anxiety levels of nursing students: A randomized control trial.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the clinical education program based on Watson's human caring theory on coping and anxiety levels of nursing students. The research sample consisted of the intervention (n = 53) and the control (n = 53) group. A statistically significant difference was determined in anxiety mean scores (P < .001) and the self-confident approach, the social-support seeking approach, the unconfident approach, and the submissive approach subscales of coping with stress in students of the intervention group compared to the control group (P < .05). It is recommended that the clinical education program based on Watson's caring theory is used during the clinical education of nursing students.

Healthcare interprofessional team members' perspectives on human caring: A directed content analysis study

ObjectivesAs Watson's Human Caring Theory continues to evolve and guide the discipline of nursing, the challenge is to find ways to integrate it into practice. The purpose of this study is to describe interprofessional team members' perspectives on human caring based on the Ten Caritas Processes®/Caritas-Veritas Literacy of Watson's Human Caring Theory within the Unitary Caring Science. MethodsThis is a qualitative directed content analysis study, taking place in a Children's Hospital in the United States between November 2017 and April 2018. Information redundancy was utilized to guide the recruitment. Data were collected via a one-time face-to-face individual interview. A qualitative directed content analysis was conducted using Watson's Ten Caritas Processes®/Caritas-Veritas Literacy as a coding framework. ResultsTwenty-seven healthcare professionals participated in the study. Interprofessional human caring, based on the Ten Caritas Processes®/Caritas-Veritas Literacy, was referred to as performing loving-kindness to patients, each other, and self; maintaining faith-hope in teamwork; valuing inter-subjective interactions and building trust among team members; cultivating heart-centered-caring relations; acknowledging and processing positive and negative feelings non-judgmentally; applying all ways of knowing in caring; encouraging reciprocal teaching-learning; developing caring-healing environments collaboratively; respecting human dignity of patients and each other; and being open-minded to the unknowns and believing in miracles. ConclusionsWatson's Human Caring Theory can be an underlying guide to enrich human-to-human relations and create a caring-healing environment. When human caring is applied in interprofessional teams, healthcare professionals find a caring consciousness to care for oneself and each other and promote patient care.

Evolution of Watson's Human Caring Science in the Digital Age

Abstract The emergence of the digital age has expanded the role of the nurse to include frequent digital interactions with instructors, peers, patients, managers, organizations, communities, and beyond. Also, because digital resources provide expansive teaching/learning/sharing opportunities where challenges related to geography, proximity, time, language, culture, and economics do not preclude accessibility, new possibilities for establishing global caring/learning communities have emerged where transdisciplinary, multicultural, diverse cohorts from all over the world have opportunities to come together to learn about caring and share unique perspectives and experiences. Ten studies based on Watson's human caring theory, all with a focus on teaching, conveying, and sustaining caring in online nursing classrooms, have validated the applicability and relevance of utilizing Jean Watson's human caring theory to better understand the phenomenon of caring in digital settings.

Sense, Connect, Facilitate: Nurse Educator Experiences of Caring Online Through Watson's Lens

Twenty-four nurse educators spontaneously provided rich narratives in response to an online survey that asked only for brief answers to 4 questions: Is it possible to demonstrate caring online? What cues prompt you to initiate caring interventions with students? What caring interventions do you initiate in response to those cues? How do students respond to your caring efforts? Themes encompassed within these remarkable narratives include sense, connect, and facilitate. These themes correspond to key elements in Watson's human caring theory and provide a window into the philosophies and practices of 24 wise, intuitive, creative, and deeply caring nurse educators.

Graduate nurse internship program: a formalized orientation program.

The graduate nurse internship program was developed on the basis of Watson's Human Caring Theory. In this article, the author discusses how an orientation program was formalized into an internship program and how the theory was applied.

Practice in 2050: Caring Science and a Synthesis of Views

In this column nurses influenced by Watson's human caring theory and Eriksson's theory of caritative caring share their ideas about what nursing theory-guided practice will be like in 2050. Following these contributions about caring theories in 2050, is a synthesis of threads of relatedness across the volume 20 Practice Applications columns-all of which focus on possibilities for nursing theory-guided practice in 2050.

Snapshots of experience: vignettes from a nursing home.

The specific aim of this research project was to examine and describe the experience of living in a nursing home for six people of 80 years and older. 'Visit' is presented as a means of developing nursing knowledge. This research method is founded on the belief that the act of nursing involves the development of a relationship, and was created out of the author's desire for a relational research method. Philosophical support for the method is provided by Maurice Merleau-Ponty's existentialism, Sally Gadow's existential advocacy, and Jean Watson's Human Caring Theory. Authenticity is proposed as an alternative to the concepts of reliability and validity for judging the scientific merit of the method. Whether the nursing role is researcher, practitioner or educator, each person's unique and inexhaustible story provides the basis for nursing care. Nurse researchers using 'Visit' as a method of inquiry can illustrate these unique differences through a story, through the images or pictures each individual creates with his or her own words.
