Concepts for waterfront developments, focusing on Siofok, Hungary

The paper shows a general introduction about the connection of cities, particularly Siofok, the ‘capital’ of Lake Balaton and water surfaces through three topics: the first part deals with the past and present of waterfronts, by exploring the most important principles in their design, then describes the significant tools and methods of the Hungarian cities around Lake Balaton, the most important water surface of Hungary, related to the areas adjacent to the water. Finally, it reveals a complex design work by the authors for refurbishing the waterfront in Siofok, based on a national competition.

Strategic planning harnessing urban policy mobilities: the gradual development of local sustainability fix

ABSTRACTThe aim of our article is to follow how global policy models affect local policy making. Each city has unique local challenges in promoting development, e.g. economic growth, but also needs to find a balance between these targets and demands for sustainable city solutions. In our empirical study, we follow how ideas of waterfront development – to attract new inhabitants and promote economic growth – and global demands of carbon control were used interactively in a strategic spatial planning process in the city of Tampere, Finland. During the six-year planning process, these two policy targets became interdependent, created a new policy-making domain, and led to a combinatorial development of sustainability elements arising from this domain. These findings demonstrate the serial use of global policy models in the creation of a local urban ‘sustainability fix’. To conclude, the intertwinement of diverse global policy models in a city planning process creates easily a recursive cycle that redefines urban sustainability within cities and intercity networks. This perspective makes local policy narratives and strategic planning highly important in urban sustainability research as promoting urban sustainability becomes an inherently ambivalent practice.

Lighthouse tourism: is there a “dark” side?

PurposeThe lighthouse tourism, which has been flourishing in several coastal areas and port cities with waterfront, provides the ideal scenario for escape experiences. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the implicit (dark tourism) meanings, symbolisms and emotions evoked by lighthouses, in particular those related with recreational storm chasing, “land’s ends” pilgrimage and gaze upon dystopic places.Design/methodology/approachUsing a qualitative approach such as filmography’s content analysis (filtered by IMDb database), photo elicitation and engagement with lighthouses promotion websites, this study searched for evidences supporting the classification of lighthouse tourism as a “lighter” dark tourism product.FindingsThe qualitative information gathered from different sources provided support for a taxonomy of motives for engaging (dark) lighthouse experiences: risk recreation; isolation and loneliness; pilgrimage; shipwrecking; memorials; dystopia; and gaze for “ice palaces.”Research limitations/implicationsThis conceptual paper suggests a taxonomy for a systematic classification of dark lighthouse experiences and suggested some research propositions for further research.Practical implicationsPublic decision makers, maritime authorities and tourism operators may acknowledge the theoretical and practical contributions provided by this paper and develop innovative escape experiences.Social implicationsThe lighthouse tourism is an innovative and creative way to promote the sustainable development of waterfronts of port cities, giving more “energy” to these coastal and often peripheral areas.Originality/valueThe paper fills a gap in the literature that so far never had deeply explored the relationship between the lighthouses’ meanings/experiences and dark tourism and introduces the innovative concept of (dark) lighthouse tourism.

Construction Technology Used for the Reclamation of Seri Tanjung Pinang (Phase 2)

The second phase of Seri Tanjung Pinang (STP2) aims to be an exemplar water front development that encapsulates the best of island living in Penang, Malaysia. STP2 offers a range of residential, commercial and leisure facilities to both local and international investors. Based on the geographical area, STP2 is divided into three packages, which are Package 2A (foreshore of Gurney Drive and the western region of the sand island), Package 2B (the southeast region of the sand island) and Package 2C (the northeast region of the sand island). It is an extension of the fully developed STP1 (Phase I) consisting of 240 acres of land reclamation works. Reclamation of the 253-acre STP2 Package 2A commenced in 2016 and is still underway, and reclamation of the remaining packages with the reclamation size of 507-acres shall kick off at a later stage. The main intention of this paper is to address the construction technology adopted since the commencement of the STP2 Package 2A reclamation. Prior to introduction to the various construction technologies used, the background of this reclamation project is first described. The overall construction sequence for the reclamation is also provided. The construction technologies applied for this project including turbidity control measures, delivery modes for construction materials, perimeter bund construction, placement of filled materials, soil improvement, sheet pile installation and construction of revetment, are respectively detailed in this paper.

Urban Water Body Recreational Development and Revitalizing Program in Sri Lanka: Public Perception and Willingness to Pay

Urban water body recreational areas add varied socio- economic and environmental benefits to the urban lives. This study explores public perception and their willingness to pay for open water area recreational development at Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, Sri Lanka. A total number of 300 questionnaire surveys were carried out with users and non users of the recreational area. The monetary value of urban water front development was gauged by the contingent valuation method using payment card approach. Enjoying peace and relaxation, taking children to play and breath clean air were mentioned as most important aspects of open water body areas. More frequent visits occur to enjoy peace and relaxation, breath clean air and enjoy the natural landscape. Almost all the participants were agreed upon conserving open water body areas in urban settings. Willingness to pay was significantly associated with income and occupation status. It yielded a monthly average payment of Rs. Rs.446.93 per household for another five years time. There were 33 percent of zero bids. Limited budget was the main reason for not willing to pay. This study indicates the applicability of contingent valuation method in valuing economic value of non market goods in developing countries. The findings could assist future open water body development and conservation and argue the need of considering community views and expectations in relevant public spaces and policies. This paper is significant as there is no contingent valuation method study has been carried on water body development in Sri Lanka.

Main issues of pile foundation at waterfront development and its prevention method

Pile foundation is widely used in construction and building marine structures. This is because pile foundation is an important structure and should have long-term durability. However, in waterfront development, a lot of issues from the seawater should be considered distinctively because it consists of many problems that can affect the building structure especially the foundation of the building. Thus, a research should be conducted to identify issues of pile foundation at waterfront development and determine its prevention methods. The research was carried out through interviews with the developers and contractors from the projects of Lexis Hibiscus at Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan and Redevelopment for Deep-Water Facilities at Quay 6 in Pasir Gudang, Johor, Malaysia. The objectives of this research are to identify issues of pile foundation and to determine the prevention methods of pile foundation issues at waterfront development. All respondents agreed that the main issues of pile foundations at waterfront development are the wave and tide condition. The prevention methods of the issue faced at waterfront development that are most frequently used for the pile foundation are coating system and concrete cover. This research is beneficial to all developers and contractors to ensure pile foundations at waterfront development can be protected by using the prevention methods.

To Construct Buildings Onto Seabed Directly Without Land Reclamation

After shifting of the existing city seaport terminals from southern side of Singapore to Tuas South at western side of Singapore after 2027, the existing seaport areas including the sea spaces can be released for Southern Waterfront Development, as announced by Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) on 28 July 2016. URA has indicated in their Master Plan – Greater Southern Waterfront which could be built up for new housing, commercial, cultural and entertainment uses, cementing Singapore’s growing reputation as a world-class city for its people to live, work and play.In this Paper, the Author has given several ideas to construct buildings onto seabed directly without land reclamation. These structural systems will eliminate the energies for excavation, transportation, reclamation and compaction for the fill materials.

A view from the wharf: historical perspectives on the transformation of urban waterfront space in Stockholm during the twentieth century

ABSTRACT:This article examines the development of Hammarby Lake City in southern Stockholm on a former industrial, waterfront site during the 1990s. The setting may resemble recent global redevelopments of urban waterfronts and docks; however, in it Stockholm needs to be viewed against longer cultural, aesthetic and historical influences. This includes early twentieth-century precedents rooted in civic and residential engagement with the modern and industrial shoreline. In addition, an informal human interaction with the abandoned southern Hammarby harbour evolved during the 1950s through reoccupation by an itinerant community of workers. Such forerunners have often been overlooked in accounts of a late twentieth-century dramatic transformation of industrial waterfronts. The article concludes that there is scope to align the theme of waterfront development more closely to the longer history of the twentieth-century city. This perspective provides a useful counterpoint to the leading view of such spaces as an expression of late capitalism.

Converging social classes through humanized urban edges

Urban open spaces are created to be used by people. It is a place of convergence and social activity. However, these places have transformed into places of divergence. When spaces become dehumanized, it separates social classes. As a result, underused spaces contribute to urban decay. Particularly an urban edge, the JP Rizal Makati Waterfront Area is the center of this paper. The JP Rizal Makati Waterfront Area is a waterfront development situated along the banks of one of Metro Manila’s major water thoroughfare --- Pasig River. The park and its physical form, urban design and landscape tend to deteriorate over time --- creating a further division of social convergence. Social hostility, crime, negligent maintenance and poor urban design are contributing factors to this sprawling decay in what used to be spaces of bringing people together. Amidst attempts to beautify and renew this portion of Makati City’s edge, the urban area still remains misspent.This paper attempts to re-humanize the waterfront development. It uses the responsive environment design principles to be able to achieve this goal.

Waterfront Development Concepts in Indonesia from the Perspective of Urban Planning and Environmental Sustainability

Rivers, lakes, beaches or other public water bodies have substantial and precious environmental values, and if properly managed, they can be a tremendous element towards a sustainable city. Within the context of urban planning and environmental sustainability, the harmonious balance between built and natural environment could not be avoided. The riverfront development concepts attempt to accomplish this balance by developing the necessary built environment while keeping the natural environment intact and provides ecological service. Since the concept of riverfront development is new to Indonesia or to most cities in Indonesia, it would be a good initiative to promote this concept. The riverfront development concept would bring the positive multiplier effects to urban development and ultimately to the well-being of urban citizens. This paper attempts to address the possibilities of riverfront development concept for its existence from the viewpoint of urban planning and environmental sustainability. This thought is based on personal lookout as well as relevant references. The study was carried out by observing some examples of waterfront development in some cities. Assessment on the regulations of riverfront related development was also undertaken. The study found that present approach on rivers or lakes or other public water bodies as the backyard of the development has brought to various environmental degradation. The riverfront concept is expected to reverse the situation for its numerous social, economic and environmental advantages. We suggest that this concept must be implemented elsewhere in Indonesia due to foreseeable returns towards sustainable urban development and sustainable cities.

Contested Space, Peacebuilding and the Post-conflict City

The physical renaissance of Belfast, with new waterfront developments, shopping precincts and tech-led industries, are potent signifiers of how far the region has come since the Belfast Agreement. However, the effects of regeneration have been socially and spatially uneven, and sites of modernity sit uncomfortably close to communities that are still affected by poverty, division and violence. This article identifies a range of competitive discourses on contested space, each one attempting to frame the problem in preferential but inevitably partial ways. The analysis concludes by emphasising the centrality of economics in peacebuilding, especially in the places left behind in the new post-conflict order.

Architecture competitions in an urban planning context

This paper analyzes discussions and controversy surrounding the architecture competitions that have been part of a large-scale waterfront redevelopment plan called the Fjord City plan in Oslo, Norway. Particular attention is given to the architectural competition for the new Edvard Munch Museum. The Fjord City waterfront development plan is organized through an entrepreneurial mode of planning and with clear neoliberal underpinnings. The paper looks at how architectural competitions are used and how they function within the context of contemporary planning.

Floodplain Stability Indices for Sustainable Waterfront Development by Spatial Identification of Erosion and Deposition

The abrupt rises of water level in rivers by torrential rain or storm repeatedly cause inundation damage, such as erosion and deposition in floodplains. However, studies on identifying the abrasion of waterfront facilities or the accumulation of sediment near rivers under extreme flow conditions are seldom found because floodplains are utilized in various ways in each country. In this study, novel floodplain sustainability indices by spatial classification of erosion and deposition were developed for sustainable waterfront development. The indices can provide the relative spatial distribution of erosion and deposition in a floodplain by using only kinematic flow information, such as flow depth and velocity obtained by 2D numerical analysis. Accordingly, applying a complex sediment transport model that involves numerous assumptions and parameters can be moderately replaced with the present approach. The suitability of developed indices was tested in several flow problems by comparing the predicted erosional or depositional region with measured data. In addition, the developed indices were applied to a floodplain in a natural river to examine the relative spatial distribution of the erosion and deposition for a typhoon event, and the results were compared with field monitoring data. It was found that deposition was more likely to occur than erosion in most floodplains, and the developed floodplain sustainability indices accurately quantified the erosion and deposition phenomena.

Water resources is a natural element that has an important role in the development of a city. Not only on the land, development of the city can be done up to the water's edge. Among the aquatic and urban development zone of interaction it is called waterfront. the principle on planning a waterfront region is to build a public open space in urban areas that are physically and visually facing to the water (beach/river/lake) and can be a forum for community activities. To establish the identity and character of the city, Cibinong Raya was designed with Situ-front City because the city has 17 lakes on its territory. Those lakes in Cibinong Raya has different size and physical condition distinct from one another that could affect the priorities in its development. The study was conducted to evaluate the area around lakes in Cibinong Raya in accordance with waterfront development concept. Assessment on the condition of lakes in Cibinong Raya applies the criteria waterfront, riparian ecosystem status criteria, and the criteria for the status of aquatic ecosystems. The results showed that there are 3 lakes is in good condition and 4 lakes in passably condition to be developed into waterfront area.

Assessing Opportunities and Challenges in Waterfront Development in Malaysia

Waterfront development is already a well-established phenomenon internationally. Nowadays, many waterfronts have been transformed from working industrial ports into commercial, recreational and tourist areas. In Malaysia, as the economy began to develop in the 1980s, so did the use of land along many of the waterfronts. The pressure of new technology coupled with urban population growth and urbanization began to force a transition from water dependent industries to a variety of non-water dependent urban developments. Residential waterfront development has taken advantage of the land made available by changed land use and has incorporated the water amenities as a feature or “selling point” of the development. However, the development of waterfront land has occurred with limited federal, state, or municipal planning guidance and in some cases has added a cost in terms of flooding and pollution. Although some waterfront development projects continue to remain profitable and also maintain a successful public access component, many have not. The focus of this study was to examine the opportunities and challenges for undertaking waterfront developments. The findings of this research were based on the questionnaires mailed and e-mailed to property development companies listed under Bursa Malaysia. The findings has identified nine opportunities that drove property development companies when undertaking waterfront development projects in Malaysia, and to introduce a new concept of development was the main reasons that motivated the respondents. Moreover, the findings has identified seven challenges for successful implementation of waterfront development in Malaysia, and the difficulty in balancing the various social, economic and financial needs of the various stakeholders was determined as a main barriers. The opportunities and challenges identified were then to be considered to balance property development right against waterfront development needs.

Urban and Social Impacts of Waterfronts Development, Case Study: Jeddah Corniche

Waterfront development has always been a common topic of interest in urban studies. Through the special nature of coastal areas, urban development of these places has its own characteristics that influenced by the typology, view, land value and environmental factors.In addition, social factors, that include community characteristics, local culture and traditions affect and receive effects from this development. Development of waterfronts plans should adhere to the notion that the waterfront is an inherently public asset.Planning a waterfront development, required the city officials or a developer to start by envisioning a network of well-connected, multi-use public spaces that fit with the community's shared goals. By orienting waterfront revitalization around public spaces, new urban design should enhance the quality of existing destinations and that results in a whole city identity that is greater than the sum of its parts.This research discusses both urban and social impacts of waterfronts development, taking Jeddah Cornish development as a case study.The research aims at pointing out the main impacts of waterfront development on both Jeddah Urban development and social development. The research's methodology follows both quantitative and qualitative methods, and conducting a community survey that measure the main impacts of Cornish Jeddah development project.The research concludes the main impacts of waterfront development to assure its sustainability.
