Removal of As(V) from aqueous solutions using calcium-alginate microspheres with encapsulated iron nanoparticles

Abstract This work investigated As(V) removal from aqueous solutions using calcium alginate microspheres with encapsulated iron nanoparticles (FeNPs) in batch systems. The kinetic, equilibrium, and thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption process were evaluated. Adsorbents were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Zeta Potential techniques. The FeNPs were obtained by a simple and low-cost method and they were successfully encapsulated and uniformly dispersed over the microspheres' surface. Significantly fast adsorption kinetic rates were observed due to microspheres' particle size and FeNPs encapsulation. The chemisorption mechanism was recognized in both adsorbate-adsorbent systems. The As(V) isotherms data suggested that the process is associated with heterogeneous adsorption. Available sorption sites with different adsorption energies were related to the functional groups involved in removing As(V), such as hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. Significantly high adsorption capacities were obtained for both materials, suggesting they can be competitive compared to conventional adsorbents, even at low FeNPs concentrations. Besides FeNPs encapsulation enhancing arsenate removal, higher adsorption was obtained at slightly acidic pH values and, together with their small particle size, suggests that the microspheres have a great potential to be used as arsenate adsorbents in the water treatment for human consumption.

Evaluation of the use of plantain starch as a natural coagulant for the removal of colour and turbidity in water for human consumption

Aim. To evaluate the effect on pH, removal of turbidity and colour, using plantain starch as a natural coagulant, extracted by wet and basic route, in a sample of synthetic water. Materials and methods. The starch was extracted by placing the pre-treated biomass in contact with water or a NaOH solution for 20 h at 18 ° C, and then separating by filtration. The efficiency in the removal of turbidity and colour was carried out using a jug test, varying the initial concentration of coagulant and the stirring rate. Results. It was found that the starch obtained by the wet route presented a higher level of turbidity reduction compared to that obtained with NaOH, reaching an efficiency of 94.6%; using 150 mg/L of coagulant and 40 rpm, and having a better performance than the synthetic coagulant aluminium sulphate (Al2(SO4)3). Conclusions. The variable evaluated with the highest linear influence is the combination of stirring rate and coagulant concentration. The use of plantain starch extracted by wet route is recommended for use in water treatment for human consumption, highlighting its nature as an advantage over Al2(SO4)3.

Changes in groundwater dissolved organic matter character in a coastal sand aquifer due to rainfall recharge

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in groundwater is fundamentally important with respect to biogeochemical reactions, global carbon cycling, heavy metal transport, water treatability and potability. One source of DOM to groundwater is from the transport of organic matter from the vadose zone by rainfall recharge. Changes in precipitation patterns associated with natural climate variability and climate change are expected to alter the load and character of organic matter released from these areas, which ultimately impacts on groundwater quality and DOM treatability. In order to investigate potential changes in groundwater DOM character after rainfall recharge, we sampled shallow groundwater from a coastal peat-rich sand aquifer in New South Wales, Australia, during an extended period of low precipitation (average daily precipitation rate < 1.6 mm day−1 over the 8 months prior to sampling), and after two heavy precipitation events (84 mm day−1 and 98 mm day−1 respectively). We assess changes in DOM composition after correcting for dilution by a novel combination of two advanced analytical techniques: liquid chromatography organic carbon detection (LC-OCD) and negative-ion electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). We also assess changes in water chemistry pre- and post-rainfall. Post-rainfall, we show that the dilution-corrected amount of highly aromatic DOM molecular formulae (i.e. those categorised into the groups polyphenolics and condensed aromatics) were 1.7 and 2.0 times higher respectively than in pre-rainfall samples. We attribute this to the flushing of peat-derived DOM from buried organic material into the groundwater. We also identify that periods of low precipitation can lead to low hydrophilic/HOC ratios in groundwater (median = 4.9, n = 14). Redundancy analysis (RDA) was used to compare the HOC fraction with FT-ICR MS compound groups. We show that HOC has a more aromatic character in pre-rainfall samples, and is less similar to the aromatic groups in post-rainfall samples. This suggests that the decline in water-borne hydrophobics observed post-rainfall could be associated with preferential adsorption of the hydrophobic aromatic DOM, making post-rainfall samples less treatable for potable water supply. Post-rainfall we also observe significant increases in arsenic (leading to concentrations greater than 3 times the World Health Organisation drinking water limit of 10 μg / L). Increases in coastal rainfall due to climate change may therefore alter the composition of groundwater DOM in coastal peatland areas in ways that may impact DOM bioavailability, and increase arsenic concentrations, reducing the ease of water treatment for human consumption. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to identify the chemical and molecular changes of shallow groundwater DOM pre-rainfall and post-rainfall in a sedimentary organic carbon rich environment through multiple analytical techniques.

O uso da cavitação hidrodinâmica aplicado ao tratamento de água

A cavitação hidrodinâmica se apresenta como um processo oxidativo avançado (POA), permitindo integrar-se aos processos de tratamento de água para consumo humano. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo investigar os efeitos de diferentes reatores de cavitação hidrodinâmica para tratar água contaminada com esgoto doméstico, avaliando a contaminação microbiológica e os parâmetros físico-químicos. Foram construídos três modelos de reatores com diferentes rotores (R1, R2 e R3). Os resultados obtidos nos reatores R1, R2 e R3 mostraram redução nas concentrações dos parâmetros químicos em todas as amostras, particularmente nitritos, nitratos, bicarbonatos e dureza total, ao passo que a contaminação microbiológica teve inativação completa dos microrganismos estudados (coliformes totais e Escherichia coli).

Application of zeolitic volcanic rocks for arsenic removal from water

Natural zeolitic rocks consisting mainly of chabazite-phillipsite, clinoptilolite, and volcanic glass have been evaluated by means of batch methods to remove arsenic from waters with different mineralization degree (from deionized water to natural water with a specific conductivity of 1,600 μS cm − 1 ). Arsenic was previously spiked in the studied waters at concentrations of about 100 µg l − 1 to simulate actual cases. The compositional range of natural waters is representative of large hydrogeochemical regions around the world. The experiments were focussed on the application of natural common zeolitic rocks to water treatment for human consumption. The removal efficiency observed rises, in the better cases, 60–80% for chabazite-phillipsite raw materials whereas is 40–60% for clinoptilolite-bearing ones. The arsenic removal tends to increase with water mineralization degree, independently of the zeolitic rock type. A large zeolitic content in the chabazite-phillipsite raw materials increase the removal. Instead, the inverse situation is observed in the clinoptilolite-bearing rocks. The relevance of the quantitative mineralogical analysis, determining also the content of volcanic glass, as well as the use of natural waters in the removal tests has been demonstrated.
