The main problems of the functioning of existing water supply and water distribution systems in Ukraine

The article analyzes the urgent problems of water supply and drainage, separately in wartime conditions. To solve them, a new scientific approach is proposed, the final result of which will be a single method for optimizing the water supply and drainage systems of settlements. Mandatory components of this methodology are proposed: design and construction of duplicate water supply and drainage systems of settlements, organization of installation and arrangement of pump stations as spare independent water supply systems of settlements. Scientific substantiation of alternative scenarios for individual populated points is proposed, of which the most optimal scenario for the sustainable operation of the system in the long term will be recommended to the local self-government body. In addition, it is proposed for settlements to carry out a risk analysis with the filling of forms according to which water supply and drainage enterprises will work.

ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF LAND COVER AND LAND USE CHANGE ON URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE RESILIENCE IN ABUJA, NIGERIA: A CASE STUDY FROM 2017 TO 2022

The remarkable feature of rapid urbanisation, which has fundamentally altered the distribution of land cover and land use (LULC), is what sets the contemporary era apart. The impact of these modifications on the resilience of Abuja’s metropolitan infrastructure from 2017 to 2022 is examined in this study. Our study examined the dynamic changes in LULC using information from remote sensing, geospatial analysis software, and land cover categorization techniques. The findings indicate major changes in Abuja’s topography, including a decrease in the number of water bodies, a decrease in the number of trees, the expansion of urban areas, changes in agricultural land use, and fluctuations in the amount of grazing land. The previously mentioned changes have significant consequences for urban infrastructure resilience, affecting various sectors such as water supply, transportation, housing, utilities, and food distribution systems. The infrastructure supporting water supply and sanitation may be severely stretched as the number of water bodies decreases, affecting the quantity and quality of accessible water supplies. As metropolitan areas expand, greater strain is placed on transportation infrastructure, exacerbating traffic congestion and complicating road maintenance ifficulties. Changes in agricultural land use can have an impact on food production and distribution, hence affecting food security. Deforestation can cause ecological deterioration, affecting a variety of aspects such as temperature regulation, biological diversity, and atmospheric purity. Adaptive approaches, green infrastructure, and adopting sustainable urban design can all strengthen the resilience of urban infrastructure, according to this study. The significance of renewable energy adoption, community participation, green building laws, the establishment of public-private partnerships, integrated water resource management, and data-driven decision-making is emphasised. Improving legal frameworks that prioritise resilience and sustainability is critical. It is critical to have a complete grasp of the complicated links between changes in LULC, and the resilience of urban infrastructure in order to enable educated urban design and decision-making processes. Policymakers and urban planners may address and minimise the negative consequences of climate change while improving the overall quality of life in cities by using sustainable development practises. The findings of this study have the potential to dramatically improve Abuja’s people’s well-being and sustainability, especially given the variety of urban difficulties they encounter.

Performance evaluation of water supply distribution system: a case study of Muke Turi town, Oromia region, Ethiopia

Abstract Adequate and sustainable supply of potable water in urban areas of developing countries is often a challenge. This study assessed the performance of the water supply system in Muke Turi town, Oromia, Ethiopia. The Water Geospatial Engineering Modeling System (WaterGEMS) model was used for hydraulic analysis of the distribution network. The water losses were determined by different indicators including non-revenue water (NRW), losses per pipe connection (LPC), losses per main pipe length (LMPL), unavoidable annual real losses (UARL), and infrastructure leakage index (ILI). The water supply coverage of the town was found as 43.34%, which is considerably low. From the hydraulic analysis, the velocity of flow in 54.2% of the pipe and pressure at 60% of the nodes were found within the recommended ranges. The NRW was estimated at 37.61%, which is above the acceptable limit. Of which, the real losses are the major ones with 37.14%. Moreover, the LPC and LMPL were found to be 298 l/d and 29,709 l/km/d, respectively, which are again above the recommended limits. Based on ILI, the annual real losses were estimated to be 4.31 times the UARL. Finally, it was concluded that access to water in the town is inadequate which is exacerbated by high losses.

Water challenges of Dire Dawa city of Ethiopia: An assessment of urban growth and groundwater supply

Urbanization in Ethiopia is increasing rapidly, leading to environmental changes and necessitating improved urban infrastructure. Dire Dawa, the second most populous city in Ethiopia, has a high rate of urban growth. This study focuses on three main areas: remote sensing analysis of urban growth, urban water supply and water distribution system, and groundwater resources management. Land use and land cover (LULC) analysis over four different time periods showed significant and rapid expansion of the city. The current and future water demand and supply analysis found that the water supply is three times less than the water demand, indicating that existing water sources are not adequate for the future expansion of the city. Moreover, the hydraulic performance of the existing distribution system as analyzed by WaterGems software found that pressure at 22.41% of nodes and velocities at 29.83% of pipes are sufficient to provide water for the study area. Finally, the study investigated the discharge and water level and water quality of each borehole in Dire Dawa City. Overall, this study showed that high urbanization rate together with the population growth has put pressure on the existing water supply source and existing water distribution system calling for feasible water management strategy for the city.

Evaluating the Hydraulic Performance of Existing Water Supply Distribution System: The Case of Tebela Town of Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia

The adequate and reliable water supply in the developing towns of Ethiopia is becoming a challenge for most water utilities especially public service providers like Tebela town. The main objective of this research was to check the hydraulic performance of Tebela town's water distribution system by evaluating water demand and production, losses of water, and hydraulic parameters. Both secondary and primary data sources were used for this study. Primary data was collected through field surveys and photographs of relevant sites and infrastructures. The secondary data was collected from design documents, literature, journals, and office. Moreover, to analyse the existing water distribution system, a model was developed by using WaterGEMSv8i software. The model simulation run was performed for peak and low demand scenarios to analyze the distribution system. The analysis shows that the water supply coverage was 25.9%. The water loss of the town was 17.2% from the total water production. Modeling results showed violation of maximum and minimum pressure and velocity criteria at different junctions and pipes. After modifying the existing water distribution system, 96.23% of the junctions are in the recommended pressure range and 73.50% of the pipes are in the recommended velocity range at minimum hourly consumption. Generally the result of the analysis shows that the overall hydraulic performance of water distribution of the town was moderate, which is reflected by medium water production rate, water consumption, and nonrevenue water, also low water coverage, some velocity and pressure is not in permissible range. Therefore, it is important to rehabilitate and improve the water distribution system capacities, establish pressure zones, increase pumping rates, and drill additional boreholes to meet the current water demand and future demand.

Physicochemical Parameters in the Generation of Turbidity Episodes in a Water Supply Distribution System

Water is necessary for the development and support of human life. The ability of water to supply the different populations has different origins: water taken from river diversions, water from underground catchments, water from lakes and reservoirs, water from the recirculation of treated water, etc. Episodes of turbidity and color changes in the water supply in pipe distribution systems are non-isolated problems that occur in many cities and towns. In particular, sedimentation in water supply pipelines and the subsequent resuspension of these particles in the system have created the need to investigate the processes and variables that promote turbidity episodes, including why, when, and where these episodes occur. In this study, different physicochemical parameters were investigated and analyzed in the water supply distribution network of the city of La Coruña (northwest Spain) through a pipe monitoring panel under real operating conditions. The supply waters come from the Mero river basin, a basin made up of siliceous materials, a unique condition with respect to the majority of studies that have been carried out using waters coming from basins made of basic materials. In this case, the relationships between different variables were studied, including the number of particles, particle size, turbidity, color, concentration of particulate materials, and mineralogy. In this article, only those parameters that are better correlated have been noted. The results revealed a predominant relationship between color and the concentration and mineralogy of particulate materials, as well as between turbidity and the number and size of particles.

Arc suppression and resonance elimination device was used more and more widely in distribution power systems. The performance for limiting overvoltage and eliminating arc are better than arc suppression coil. But when the device not work properly,it would cause more great risk on the safe of the distribution network. It was analysed that an event of power failure of pair circuits distribution network installed with arc suppression and resonance elimination device. As an example, the simulation model was established with PSCAD software, and the working mechanism of the device was discussed. The overvoltage risk of the distribution system for water supply pump station was analysed. According to the analysing results, it is proposed that routine maintenance method and typical configuration of the device.

Failure assessment for drinking water distribution system in the case of Bahir Dar institute of technology, Ethiopia

In this paper, the issue of failure assessment in the drinking water distribution system was presented. This specific study was conducted on the water distribution system on the campus of Bahir Dar Institute of Technology. The current problem in Bahir Dar institute of technology is that the water infrastructure is aging and has not been spending adequate to repair, replace, or rehabilitate drinking water distribution systems. This develops higher stresses on the water distribution network causing pipes to crack, or rupture permanently while in service. Due to this problem, the whole water supply components in the distribution network led to increased water loss and quality reduction. The general objective of this study is to assess the risk of the water distribution system in the Bahir Dar Institute of technology water supply distribution system. In this study, a structural risk assessment was developed by using ARC GIS 10.5 and Water Cad V8i to get prioritize maps of the water distribution system and hydraulic analysis of the drinking water distribution system of the institute. In developing this assessment, the score was established based on the preset criteria to evaluate customer point risk and structural point risks such as water quality, water availability, pressure head adequacy, the flow rate of water, pipe, storage facility, and pump. Based on the result obtained from an equal weight approach, the score of the drinking water distribution system risk index is a medium level (2.56) with a low level of structural risk (2.5) and a medium level of consumer point risk (2.62). The results evaluated by the AHP method, structural risk has had the highest weight score (76%) which means it needs more priority than consumption point risk (24%), and the result of drinking water distribution system risk index laid at the medium level (2.7), it indicates the institution drinking water distribution system put at the satisfactory condition with the sum up the effect of medium structural risk index (2.65) and medium consumption point risk (2.82). Based on the findings and conclusions of the study, the components of the campus water supply distribution system, particularly parts of the pipe and the majority of the pump, should be replaced before they become obsolete, and suitable preventive measures should be taken.

Hydraulic Modelling of Water Distribution System of Aksum Town, Ethiopia

Intermittent water distribution is the key problem of many water authorities in developing countries including Ethiopia. Hence, this research was conducted to carry out the hydraulic modeling of the Aksum town water distribution system which is located in the Central Tigray region of Ethiopia. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the hydraulic performance of the water supply distribution system by assessing the situation of the existing water supply distribution system. Water GEMS V8i software was used as a tool to model the water distribution system. The model can be used to identify the high pressure and low pressure in the junctions and the magnitude of velocity through pipes was used as a base to evaluate the hydraulic performance. Modeling results showed a violation of maximum and minimum pressure and low-velocity requirements. High pressures in the system occurred both during low demand and peak demand have to be identified. The simulation result of the existing system about 38.6% of the junctions was failed to satisfy the allowable pressure and the velocity of about 34.9% was failed out of range during the peak consumption hour. The model performance measures were checked based on the coefficient of determination. In general, it was concluded that the existing water distribution network systems of Aksum town categorized under satisfactory hydraulic performance situation and were not supply adequate water to various demand categories of the town. In the modified system, the network runs hydraulic parameters are radically improved using the Pressure Reducer Valve added in the system to reduce high-pressure impacts on water distribution system. The results of the simulation show that the hydraulic simulation about 43.4% of pipes of diameter from the total water distribution system pipe diameters needed to be upgraded.

Geospatial modeling of water supply distribution system: A case study of Dehradun city, India

Abstract Water utilities form the core part of any urban infrastructure. A spatial database of the water distribution system (WDS) for Dehradun city has been created in a geographic information system (GIS) environment, while drawing data inputs from diverse sources and water supply-demand gap analysis has been performed. Environmental Protection Agency Network (EPANET, 2.0) has been used to analyze the WDS to explore its reliability in current and future scenarios. Mapping of the existing 564 km long distribution network revealed that more than three-quarters of the system has outdated water pipelines. An accuracy of 93% for pipe diameter estimation has been obtained upon validation by ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey. Water supply-demand gap analysis confirmed that although Dehradun city has surplus supply, it suffers from scarcity, mainly due to the unsatisfactory condition of the existing WDS. Twenty-seven percent of the existing pipes are smaller than the prescribed standards; there is an undesirable practice of direct pumping of water from tube wells into the network and storage tanks are required for at least 29 locations in the network. A 24-hour extended period EPANET simulation helped to identify the areas where the water supply network experienced very low or negative pressure.

Decentralized Urban Governance and Water Supply Service Delivery in Ethiopia: The Case of Adama City

Through devolving political powers, financial resources and administrative responsibilities to urban local government level, municipal decentralization in Ethiopia is largely intended to improve public service delivery. In this perspective, the aim of this study is to analyze whether the decentralization process has empowered the urban local governments to meet the demands for potable water supply services. The study relies on a case study design with particular reference to the city of Adama. It uses an extensive data collection, including key informant interviews, administrative and fiscal data. The analysis makes effective use of all these materials to investigate the effect of decentralization policy on water supply service delivery and local governance processes in Adama. The study found out that decentralized urban governance has been ineffective in the delivery of water supply service in Adama. This is because; firstly, the city lacks legal and institutional security. This makes it politically dependent upon the upper level regional state government. Secondly, contrary to the logic of ‘Enterprise model’ of water supply, the hierarchical political culture and the upward accountability of the Enterprise’s Manager have reinforced the political control from above. Thirdly, the power to determine the structure, technical and financial sources of the city’s water-supply project has been granted to regional water Bureau, while Adama water supply enterprise is practically required to provide water supply service to the residents. Fourthly, the decentralized urban water-service delivery is incompatible with the rapid and mostly informal pace of urbanization of Adama; and the city’s horizontal physical expansion and demographic changes have already gone beyond the pressure zones for the water supply distribution system. Finally, the coordination and partnership among the multilevel water institutions -at federal, state and local governments- were mainly observed at times of water crises to moderate political and electoral contingencies. The implication is that for the urban local government to deliver effective water-supply service, this study contends, decentralization process needs to ensure adequate local capacity and effective coordination and partnership between the multilevel water institutions and stakeholders.

Secure State Estimation and Control of Cyber-Physical Systems: A Survey

Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) empower the integration of physical processes and cyber infrastructure with the aid of ubiquitous computation resources and communication capabilities. CPSs have permeated modern society and found extensive applications in a wide variety of areas, including energy, transportation, advanced manufacturing, and medical health. The security of CPSs against cyberattacks has been regarded as a long-standing concern. However, CPSs suffer from extendable vulnerabilities that are beyond classical networked systems due to the tight integration of cyber and physical components. Sophisticated and malicious cyberattacks continue to emerge to adversely impact CPS operation, resulting in performance degradation, service interruption, and system failure. Secure state estimation and control technologies play a vital role in warranting reliable monitoring and operation of safety-critical CPSs. This article provides a review of the state-of-the-art results for secure state estimation and control of CPSs. Specifically, the latest development of secure state estimation is summarized in light of different performance indicators and defense strategies. Then, the recent results on secure control are discussed and classified into three categories: 1) centralized secure control; 2) distributed secure control; and 3) resource-aware secure control. Furthermore, two specific application examples of water supply distribution systems and wide-area power systems are presented to demonstrate the applicability of secure state estimation and control approaches. Finally, several challenging issues are discussed to direct future research.

Resilient and secure remote monitoring for a class of cyber-physical systems against attacks

This paper is concerned with the resilient and secure remote monitoring of a cyber-physical system of a discrete time-varying state-space form against attacks. The specific statistical characteristic, magnitude, occurring place and time of the attack signals are not required during the monitor design and attack detection procedures. First, an optimal ellipsoidal state prediction and estimation method is delicately developed in such a way that the recursively computed prediction ellipsoid and estimate ellipsoid can both guarantee the containment of the true system state at each time step regardless of the unknown but bounded input signal. It is expected that the two ellipsoids can resist certain attacks as the calculated state prediction and state estimate are sets in state-space rather than single pointwise vectors, thus potentially enhancing the resilience of the remote monitoring system. Second, a set-based evaluation mechanism in combination with a remedy measure are proposed to provide timely detection of certain attacks. Furthermore, a numerically efficient algorithm is established to achieve resilience and attack detection of the remote monitoring system. Finally, it is shown through several case studies on a water supply distribution system that the proposed methods can provide quantitative analysis and evaluation of the potential consequences of various attacks on the remote monitoring system.

Design and Analysis of Rural Water Supply System Using Loop 4.0 and Water Gems V8i for Nava Shihora Zone 1

The study presents the hydraulic design and analysis of Rural Water Distribution System (WDS) for Nava shihora region of zone 1 of the state of Gujarat, India. Water supply distribution system is designed for this study for population estimated for future 30 years. LOOP 4.0 and Water Gems v8i software have been used and the results are compared to determine the economical size of pipes for water distribution system. The economical size of pipes of water supply distribution system is designed by considering the constraints; residual pressure at each node, velocity of flow in pipe, head loos in pipes, material of pipes, elevated service reservoir level, peak factor and available commercial pipe diameters. Further water distribution system has been analyzed for extended period simulation (EPS) for the present population scenario for intermittent water supply using Water Gems v8i. Further water supply system is analyzed the residual chlorine concentration at nodes and in the pipe links and also the total cost of water supply system of rural region is estimated.

Modeling of Urban Water Supply and Water Loss in Distribution System of Adwa Town Using Hydraulic Simulation, Ethiopia

The main objective of this Research is to modeling of urban water supply and water loss in the distribution system of Adwa town under its major water supply source of Midmar Dam. This Research is conducted in Adwa town to model the water supply distribution system, the existing water distribution system of the town is both pump and gravity system. the water from the treatment plant of Adiabun to the storage reservoir by the pump. Then, the stored water is distributed by DCI, PVC, and GI pipe materials to the town by gravity. The research also depends on secondary data from the CSA Census report, and the meter reading reports at the District offices of Adwa town. In this study the data is entered, coded and analyzed using Bentley water GEMS V8i (SELECT series5.The analysis result shows the domestic and non-domestic water supply coverage of the town is 56.13%. The hydraulic Simulation in the existing water system to satisfy the Adwa town has been approved for hydraulic parameters such as head, pressure, and flow rate. The collected data on the number of water losses, causes of water losses, to reduce losses, and the challenges ahead have been collected and analyzed taking international the association best practice of water loss strategies. A Tale of Two Water Supplies in China: Finding Practical Solutions to Urban and Rural Water Supply Problems.

Access to safe drinking water is among the 17 United Nations sustainable development goals. As the largest developing country, China has confronted large challenges to providing safe and sufficient drinking water to its population of 1.4 billion under the conditions of limited water sources and ubiquitous water contamination. This Account outlines these challenges as well as the practical solutions implemented by Chinese water professionals. We first provide a general introduction of the water supply in China. Next, we describe the main challenges of water source shortages and source water contamination. The practical solutions developed by Chinese water professionals are the core part of this Account, to which we have devoted ourselves to and contributed in some issues and cases. The water supply in China is a binary system that reflects the gap between urban and rural communities. Both urban and rural water supplies have been subject to water source shortages and contamination. Water shortages are mainly solved by long-distance water transportation projects. Urban water utilities generally pay attention to organic matter, ammonia, algae, and chemical spills in source water while also focusing on micro-organisms and disinfection byproducts in tap water. Micro-organisms are a widespread concern for rural water supplies, whereas arsenic, fluoride, and ammonia are an endemic concern in some rural communities. Investment in updating of treatment processes significantly benefits urban water supplies, and advanced treatment of ozonation and biologically activated carbon processes are now commonly used to ensure that strict drinking water quality standards are met. However, this is not the case for rural water supplies, where expensive advanced treatment is not affordable. Thus, improving rural water supplies requires approaches such as searching for sources with better water quality, using automated ultrafiltration instruments, or connecting to urban water supply distribution systems. For rural areas with high concentrations of arsenic or fluoride in source water, specific adsorbents are a practical way to help farmers. Similar challenges will be encountered elsewhere in the world; therefore, the practical solutions applied in China will be useful to other countries in different stages of development.

Reliability Analysis for Water Supply Distribution and Storm Water Drainage Systems: State of the Art Review

For urban community, the water supply system is one of the vital services. Hydraulic design of reservoirs, tanks and the water distribution or wastewater networks is carried out for the design capacity. Codes and standards generally lack the provisions for incorporating concept of reliability in design. A very important hydro system for urban life, especially for coastal cities experiencing torrential rains like Mumbai, is the storm water drainage system. Reliability estimates for the storm water drainage network under the extreme event conditions form another challenge. The various uncertainties involved in water supply systems would include temporal variations of the demand, structural failure of the pipeline or storage tanks, malfunctioning of the valves or pumps, data handling and modelling uncertainties. In case of the storm water drainage systems, the uncertainties could be the storm characteristics, the infiltration and local detentions, or the local choking of the drainage network. The reliability approaches adopted for hydro systems over last few decades include: probability distribution functions and joint probability distributions functions, variance-based methods, perturbed physics models, capacity weighted reliability index, copulas, rank histogram and rank bipolar diagram, method of least square technique, Monte Carlo simulations, fuzzy logic, artificial neural network, functional resonance analysis method, ensemble techniques, Advanced First Order Second Moment method and Bayesian approaches. In this article, the state of the art is presented for reliability estimation for the different essential systems related to water supply, wastewater network, and storm water drainage and flood risk assessment for urban areas.

Diversidad de especies de micobacterias no tuberculosas aisladas en ambientes acuáticos de la ciudad de General Pico, La Pampa, Argentina

Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are studied not only for their importance as emerging opportunistic pathogens but also for their applications in biotechnology and bioremediation. Our aim was to determine the occurrence and diversity of mycobacteria in different aquatic habitats of General Pico city, Province of La Pampa. The percentage of samples with positive cultures for mycobacteria were the following: 37.5% recovered from the water supply distribution system; 32.6% from the aquifer that supplies water to the distribution system; 36.8% from rain water; 53.1% from the two wetlands in the area of influence; 80% from indoor swimming pools; and 33.3% from water fountains in downtown public squares. Of the 90 NTM isolates, 8.9% could not be identified at the species level with any of the used methods, phenotypic tests and molecular methods. Mycobacterium fortuitum and Mycobacterium gordonae were the most frequently isolated species. Some of the identified species such as, M. fortuitum, M. gordonae, M. intracellulare, M. vaccae, M. lentiflavum and M. nonchromogenicum, have been reported in cases of mycobacteriosis in Argentina. Mycobacteria with values higher than 0.8mg/ml of residual active chlorine were not recovered from the drinking water supply network, whereas in the swimming pools the presence of up to 1.5mg/l was not a constraint. Based on our results, the presence of mycobacteria in aquatic environments is close to 35% and their occurrence and diversity is affected both by contact with man and his activities as well as by the existence of animal life.
