Strategies for improvement of water quality in urban lakes

Urban lakes play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance and improving environmental conditions within cities. They also contribute to socio-economic development by providing recreational opportunities and attracting visitors. However, there are many issues that lead to adverse effects on the water quality in the lakes. Strategies to improve the water quality have to be identified. Implementation of the strategies is dependent on the support from construction professionals. Therefore, in the present study, the levels of support towards the implementation of the strategies are investigated by means of a questionnaire survey among construction professionals. Results revealed that, draining the lake to clean out accumulated waste, pumping in clean water to artificially raise the water level, and planting more shoreline vegetation, obtained the highest levels of support. They also highlighted the importance of implementing a combination of the strategies for a successful overall improvement in the water quality.

Linking sediment geochemistry with catchment processes, internal phosphorus loading and lake water quality

Research in the field of sediment geochemistry suggests potential linkages between catchment processes (land use), internal phosphorus (P) loading and lake water quality, but evidence is still poorly quantified due to a limited amount of data. Here we address the issues based on a comprehensive data set from 27 lakes in southern Finland. Specifically, we aimed at: 1) elucidating factors behind spatial variations in sediment geochemistry; 2) assessing the impact of diagenetic transformation on sediment P regeneration across lakes based on the changes in the vertical distribution of sediment components; 3) exploring the role of the sediment P forms in internal P loading (IL), and 4) determining the impact of IL on lake water quality. The relationship between sediment P concentration and field area percentage (FA%) was statistically significant in (mainly eutrophic) lakes with catchments that included more than 10 % of fields. We found that sediment iron-bound P (Fe-P) increased with increasing FA%, which agrees with the high expected losses from the cultivated areas. Additionally, populated areas increased the pool of sediment Fe-P. Internal P loading was significantly positively related to both sediment Fe-P and sediment organic P (Org-P). However, Org-P was not significant (as the third predictor) in models that had a trophic state variable as the first predictor and Fe-P as the second predictor. Further, the vertical profiles of sediment components indicated a role of diagenetic transformations in the long-term sediment P release, especially in lakes with deeper maximum depth and longer water residence time. Finally, IL was significantly positively correlated to water quality variables including phytoplankton biomass, its proportion of cyanobacteria, chlorophyll a concentration and trophic state index. Our findings suggest that reduction of P losses from the field and populated areas will decrease internal P loads and increase water quality through a reduced pool of Fe-P.

Temporal variations in dissolved organic matter properties in a eutrophic lake under water dilution and aquatic plant litter decomposition: A simulated microcosm study revealing the environmental and microbial driving factors

Dilution by importing external clean water and restoration of aquatic vegetation are widely applied strategies for improving water quality of eutrophic lakes, while the influence of dilution or aquatic plant litter decomposition on dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties, which is closely associated with the health of aquatic ecosystems, is rarely known. In this study, the temporal variations of DOM properties in the overlying water of a eutrophic lake (Yilong lake in Yunnan, southwest China) under water dilution and aquatic plant litter decomposition were comparatively investigated via a simulated microcosm study using in situ samples. The results showed that water dilution reduced DOM concentration and bioavailability in the overlying water in a short term (about 45 d), and increased DOM humification, but such effect diminished over time. DOM concentration increased substantially during aquatic plant litter decomposition, and reed litter released much more amounts of DOM than that of cattail litter, which dominated by protein-like substances and characterized by high bioavailability and low humification degree. Nutrient (available phosphorus (AP), NH4+-N and TN) contents in the sediment indirectly affected DOM properties by remarkably influencing microbial community compositions and enzyme activities. The strong correlations between the relative abundances of dominant genera Bacillus and Clostridium and concentrations of DOM components implied the important roles of these taxa in DOM transformations. Our findings highlighted the effects and potential mechanisms of dilution and aquatic plant litter decomposition on DOM properties in eutrophic water bodies, and the necessity of proper water diversion and plant litter harvest to reduce endogenous organic pollution in lakes.

Assessment of the ecological status of the river water system in European North under conditions of ultra-fresh humus waters using biotic indices (Suna River, Lake Onega Basin, Russia).

Protecting rivers and lakes from pollution is crucial for maintaining the health of aquatic ecosystems and ensuring the well-being of both wildlife and humans. Present study intends to examine the water quality of the Suna River (Eastern Fennoscandia in the European North of Russia) to assess the ecological risk. Widespread methods for assessing water quality based on macrozoobenthos and phytoperiphoton were applied. It was found that in conditions of ultra-fresh waters with high humus content, biotic indicators may indicate pollution of water bodies that do not actually experience significant anthropogenic impact. Ratings ranging from 'poor' to 'excellent' were obtained for different stations, reflecting the influence of natural features of different sections of the river. 'Good' water quality was noted at the river stones biotopes. In river gravel, sand and silt biotopes, as well as all lake biotopes, 'mediocre' water quality was found. The low anthropogenic income on the river catchment allows us to conclude that most indices for assessing water quality significantly underestimate the results in the natural conditions of Eastern Fennoscandia. Biotic indices EPT, BBI and EBI are most accurate for assessing the water quality of rivers and lakes in Eastern Fennoscandia.

Geospatial analysis of volcano-tectonic interactions: implications for spatiotemporal variations in water quality and quantity at Lake Beseka, East Africa, Ethiopia

ABSTRACT Water quality deterioration in the Main Ethiopian Rift Lakes is a problem affecting the area’s public health and socioeconomic development. The present study aimed to assess the water level rise in Lake Beseka using Landsat images from 1975 to 2023 and dilution trends at the pumping site from 2004 to 2022. In addition, the spatial water quality parameters, including pH, EC, TDS, and water surface temperature, for the years 2007, 2018, 2021, and 2023 were determined. The water level increased dramatically from 3 km2 in the 1960s to 27.5 km2 in 1980 following the construction of the Koka dam and the beginning of irrigation activity (sugarcane plantation) for the Metehara sugar estate factory. The water level reached a maximum (50 km2 in the dry season) in the mid of 1910s and become decreased and fluctuated after 2015. The observed pH, EC, and TDS were higher in the central portion of the lake, grouped under brackish water, and lower in the southwest, south, and northeast shores. The EC and TDS were higher in 2007, decreased in 2018, and fluctuated. The geothermal anomaly of the area varies from 23.1 to 47.9°C with the highest anomaly occurring at the northern side of the lake at a recent volcanic area that interlinked with geological structures. However, the observed and estimated water temperatures of the lake decreased from west to east due to hot spring discharge from the southwest shore of the lake. The series of hot springs in the southwest and west shores of the lake with high discharge rates indicate the presence of structural connectivity that leads to the emission of heat from a deep-seated source and heated groundwater of the area recharged from irrigation activity. Overall, spatiotemporal lake water quality variations were due to anthropogenic and geogenic factors, including hot springs and groundwater discharge to the lake, water level rise and bathymetric depth variation, evaporation, and irrigation activity. This study is significant in continuously estimating water level fluctuations and providing early warnings and preparedness to maintain the region's socioeconomic development.

Study of biological quality of lake waters based on phycocyanin using tree‐based methodologies

AbstractThe provision of drinking water, agricultural, and industrial applications by reservoirs has made lake exploration and monitoring unavoidable. The features of the ecosystem, particularly physical and chemical elements, influence the evaluation of the quality of water resources. Lakes undergo extensive qualitative changes due to their vast amount of water. In general, these bodies of water represent geological conditions as well as water contamination produced by natural and human activities. In the present research, the prediction of the amount of phycocyanin (fPC) in the water of Lake Michigan has been implemented employing four tree‐based machine learning techniques based on seasonality factors. Phycocyanin has significant effects on quality parameters such as turbidity, chlorophyll concentration, algal bloom, and dissolved oxygen in water by affecting the photosynthesis process of algae. Therefore, in this study, the prediction of the amount of phycocyanin dissolved in the lake water using the mentioned variables, along with the temperature of the water, specific conductance, and pH, has been able to interpret the quality of the water and the occurrence of phenomena such as algal blooms. The results of the models in predicting fPCs equal to 0.44 and 0.55 μg/L were consistent with the natural conditions of the lake, and it seems that ensemble tree–based models, along with the biological index of fPC, formed the right combination of input and output parameters in modeling and obtained the lowest prediction error (root‐mean‐square error [RMSE] boosted trees = 0.0140 and RMSE random forests = 0.0141 μg/L).

High spatial resolution inversion of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) concentrations in Ebinur Lake of arid Xinjiang, China: Implications for surface water quality monitoring

Utilizing satellite remote sensing for the assessment and temporal-spatial analysis of Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) is vital for overseeing lake water health and devising management plans. This study focused on the saline, turbid and arid Ebinur Lake, located in China’s northwestern region. The Random Forest (RF) and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model algorithms were compared to select the one with the highest accuracy. It combined Sentinel-2 remote sensing data and in situ measurement data for the quantitative inversion of CDOM. Monthly CDOM distribution maps were generated with a 10 m resolution for the non-frozen months of May to October from 2018 to 2022, followed by a comprehensive analysis of temporal trends. The primary conclusions are: (1) The XGBoost model yielded highly accurate CDOM estimates, with a training set coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.94, a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.06 mg/L, Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 6.05 %, Relative Percent Difference (RPD) of 4.07; the test set demonstrated an R2 of 0.41 with an RMSE of 0.22 mg/L, MAPE of 22.74 %, RPD of 1.35; (2) Throughout the study period, the main lake portion displayed variable CDOM spatial patterns and trends. The inversion indicated higher CDOM concentrations in the central part than nearshore areas and decreasing CDOM in tandem with seasonable water-surface shrinkage. The findings offer hints for an accurate evaluation of water color parameters of Ebinur Lake and practical references for monitoring arid-region lake water quality via remote sensing.

Spatiotemporal variability of lake surface water temperature and water quality parameters and its interrelationship with water hyacinth biomass in Lake Tana, Ethiopia.

Urbanization, agriculture, and climate change affect water quality and water hyacinth growth in lakes. This study examines the spatiotemporal variability of lake surface water temperature, turbidity, and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and their association with water hyacinth biomass in Lake Tana. MODIS Land/ Lake surface water temperature (LSWT), Sentinel 2 MSI Imagery, and in-situ water quality data were used. Validation results revealed strong positive correlations between MODIS LSWT and on-site measured water temperature (R = 0.90), in-situ turbidity and normalized difference turbidity index (NDTI) (R = 0.92), and in-situ Chl-a and normalized difference chlorophyll index (NDCI) (R = 0.84). LSWT trends varied across the lake, with increasing trends in the northeastern, northwestern, and southwestern regions and decreasing trends in the western, southern, and central areas (2001-2022). The spatial average LSWT trend decreased significantly in pre-rainy (0.01 ℃/year), rainy (0.02 ℃/year), and post-rainy seasons (0.01℃/year) but increased non-significantly in the dry season (0.00 ℃/year) (2001-2022, P < 0.05). Spatial average turbidity decreased significantly in all seasons, except in the pre-rainy season (2016-2022). Likewise, spatial average Chl-a decreased significantly in pre-rainy and rainy seasons, whereas it showed a non-significant increasing trend in the dry and post-rainy seasons (2016-2022). Water hyacinth biomass was positively correlated with LSWT (R = 0.18) but negatively with turbidity (R = -0.33) and Chl-a (R = -0.35). High spatiotemporal variability was observed in LSWT, turbidity, and Chl-a, along with overall decreasing trends. The findings suggest integrated management strategies to balance water hyacinth eradication and its role in water purification. The results will be vital in decision support systems and preparing strategic plans for sustainable water resource management, environmental protection, and pollution prevention.

Impacts of droughts and human activities on water quantity and quality: Remote sensing observations of Lake Qadisiyah, Iraq

Water quantity and quality in lakes are closely linked to the compounding effects of climate change and human activities in their catchments, especially for lakes located in semi-arid and arid regions where water resources are scarce. Whilst knowledge gaps exist for these effects in semi-arid and arid region lakes due mainly to the lack of long-term in situ monitoring data. By using satellite remote sensing data, this study firstly investigated the variations of water level, chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) and turbidity in Lake Qadisiyah, Iraq between 2000 and 2019. Results showed that the average water level was 138.3 m in 2000–2019, it decreased clearly in 2001, 2009, 2015 and 2018 with the lowest value of 120 m in July 2015. The mean Chl-a was 6.3 mg/m3 and it showed an overall increasing trend during 2000 and 2019. Turbidity showed extremely high values (>10 NTU) in 2009 and 2017–2018 compared to the mean value of 3.6 NTU in 2000–2019. The boosted regression tree (BRT) was then used to explore the relationship between those variations and El Niño-Southern Oscillation, droughts, meteorological factors and land use land cover changes in the catchment. Results revealed that water level declines were mainly associated with droughts led by La Niña events. Chl-a increase in the lake were mainly explained by built-up area increase and water area decrease in the catchment, with a relative contribution of 29.2 % and 28.6 % respectively. Water area changes in the catchment were the main factor influencing turbidity explaining 55.3 % of the variation. An exception water level decline in 2014–2016 was also observed when there was no drought, which was most likely caused by the cut off of water flow upstream and the release of water from the dam during periods of war. The findings in this study underscored the impacts of climate and human activities on water quantity and quality in semi-arid region lakes. Actions such as improving water use efficiency, establishing water storages, and enhancing cross-border cooperation are therefore recommended to deal with extreme events. Pollution control measures in the catchment are also suggested to prevent water quality deterioration in the lake.

Can remotely sensed catchment to lake area ratios predict mercury levels in subarctic fishes?

Mercury concentrations ([Hg]) in fish reflect a complex array of interacting biogeochemical and ecological variables. In northern regions where fish are a critical subsistence food, understanding and predicting fish [Hg] can be particularly difficult, largely due to a paucity of comprehensive data associated with the logistical challenges of field sampling. Building on previous work where we elucidated causal relationships between fish [Hg] and a variety of catchment, water quality, and ecological variables in subarctic lakes, we investigated whether using only ratios of catchment area to lake area (CA:LA) can predict [Hg] in northern freshwater fish species. As CA:LA can be sensed remotely, they may be more feasible and practical to obtain than field data in far northern regions. Our study included thirteen remote lakes that represent a CA:LA gradient of 6.2–423.5 within an ∼66,000 km2 subarctic region of Northwest Territories, Canada. We found that size-standardized [Hg] in three widespread fish species, including Lake Whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis), Walleye (Sander vitreus), and Northern Pike (Esox lucius), were significantly and positively related to CA:LA (p < 0.007, r2 = 67–80%), indicating higher fish [Hg] in smaller lakes surrounded by relatively larger catchments. Our findings provide compelling evidence that remotely sensed CA:LA can be used to predict [Hg] in northern fishes and aid in prioritizing understudied and subsistence fishing lakes of the Canadian subarctic for [Hg] monitoring programs.

Watershed hydrology mediates the recovery of an arsenic impacted subarctic landscape

A holistic understanding of the chemical recovery of lakes from arsenic (As) pollution requires consideration of within-lake biogeochemical cycling of As and processes occurring in the surrounding catchment. This study used a watershed mass balance approach, complemented by experimental sediment incubations, to assess the mobility and transport of As within a subarctic watershed (155 km2) impacted by more than 60 years of atmospheric mining emissions. The period of record spanned a transition from drought to high streamflow between September 2017 and September 2019, which yielded insights into the interacting effects of hydrology and within-lake biogeochemical cycling of As. Internal loading of As from contaminated lake sediments (25–46 kg As year−1) and contributions from terrestrial sources (16–56 kg As yr−1) continue to negatively impact lake water quality (19–144 μg As L−1), but the relative importance of these loads varies seasonally and inter-annually in response to changing hydrological conditions. Wet conditions resulted in greater transport of As from terrestrial reservoirs and upstream areas, shorter lake water retention time, and increased the downstream export of As. During dry periods, the lake was disconnected from the surrounding watershed resulting in limited terrestrial contributions and longer lake water residence time, which delayed recovery due to the greater relative influence of internal loading from contaminated sediments. This study highlights that changing hydroclimatic regimes will alter trajectories of chemical recovery for arsenic impacted lakes through the coupling of within-lake and watershed transport processes.

Understanding stratification and turnover dynamics of a tropical lake using extensive field observations and 3D hydrodynamic simulations

The stratification and turnover dynamics of a tropical lake were evaluated using field observations and 3D hydrodynamic simulations. Located in the Philippines, Sampaloc Lake is a 104-ha and 27-m deep volcanic crater lake with enclosed watershed, which is at risk of the impacts of intensive aquaculture, rapid urbanization and climate change. Temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) were measured at seven sampling stations using a multiprobe. Kruskal-Wallis test revealed that the three parameters are not significantly different among stations, indicating that one sampling station can represent the water quality of the whole lake. Schmidt's Stability Index (SSI) and thermocline strength, together with DO and Chl-a gradients decreased from October 2022 (stratified) to January 2023 (turnover). After successfully verifying the 3D numerical model, sensitivity analyses of water temperature to varying weather, together with particle tracking simulations, were implemented to determine the timing of isothermal state, upwelling, partial mixing, and full turnover. Compared to air temperature, variations in wind speed have more pronounced effects on the delay or progression of isothermal conditions in the lake based on SSI, Lake Number and Wedderburn Number. Isothermal conditions do not necessarily coincide with the timing of full turnover, with the latter being delayed by two days than the former, on average. Results revealed that full turnover can occur several weeks earlier with the decrease in AT and increase in WS. This study can advance the understanding of thermal and turnover dynamics of stratified tropical lakes, leading to better management of the water quality of these water bodies.

Integrating Remote Sensing Methods for Monitoring Lake Water Quality: A Comprehensive Review

Remote sensing methods have the potential to improve lake water quality monitoring and decision-making in water management. This review discusses the use of remote sensing methods for monitoring and assessing water quality in lakes. It explains the principles of remote sensing and the different methods used for retrieving water quality parameters in complex waterbodies. The review highlights the importance of considering the variability of optically active parameters and the need for comprehensive studies that encompass different seasons and time frames. The paper addresses the specific physical and biological parameters that can be effectively estimated using remote sensing, such as chlorophyll-α, turbidity, water transparency (Secchi disk depth), electrical conductivity, surface salinity, and water temperature. It further provides a comprehensive summary of the bands, band combinations, and band equations commonly used for remote sensing of these parameters per satellite sensor. It also discusses the limitations of remote sensing methods and the challenges associated with satellite systems. The review recommends integrating remote sensing methods using in situ measurements and computer modelling to improve the understanding of water quality. It suggests future research directions, including the importance of optimizing grid selection and time frame for in situ measurements by combining hydrodynamic models with remote sensing retrieval methods, considering variability in water quality parameters when analysing satellite imagery, the development of advanced technologies, and the integration of machine learning algorithms for effective water quality problem-solving. The review concludes with a proposed workflow for monitoring and assessing water quality parameters in lakes using remote sensing methods.

Evaluation of the Aquatic Oligochatea Fauna and Seasonal Changes in Water Quality of the Büyükçekmece Dam Lake, which Provides Water to İstanbul

This study was conducted at 4 stations in Büyükçekmece Dam lake in 2020. In this study, water and Oligochaeta samples were collected seasonally. Parameters such as secchi disk depth, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity, salinity, total hardness, nitrite nitrogen, phosphate and nitrate nitrogen were measured. Water quality parameters were qualified by SKKY (2004) ve TSWQR (2021). Also, the study, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri (Claparède, 1862) and Limnodrilus udekemianus (Claparède, 1862) species belonging to Oligochaeta were found in the dam lake. The number of individuals per m2 and % dominance ratios of species were also calculated. It is recommended that similar and more comprehensive studies be carried out periodically in the dam lake to monitor the water quality of the dam lake regularly and to determine the benthic macroinvertebrate fauna.

Effects of residential self-taxing districts on urban surface water quality

An extensive literature documents the economic benefits associated with improving the quality of inland surface waters, including lakes, streams, and rivers. Efforts to do so in urban U.S. landscapes are often limited due to laws restricting the use of property taxes for surface water management. However, programs in several states allow homeowners to establish residential self-taxing districts through referendum to fund management and improvement activities. This study investigates the effectiveness of self-taxing districts for improving lake water quality, focusing upon a long-standing program in Orange County, Florida. Results from dynamic panel data models estimated with annual measures of total nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, secchi disk depth, and trophic state from >250 lakes over 1970–2018 indicate significant differences in mean annual water quality emerge over time between taxing district lakes and un-managed lakes and that particular district objectives and best management practices are associated with significant reductions in nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations.

Water quality assessment in a large plateau lake in China from 2014 to 2021 with machine learning models: Implications for future water quality management

Amid the global surge of eutrophication in lakes, investigating and analyzing water quality and trends of lakes becomes imperative for formulating effective lake management policies. Water quality index (WQI) is one of the most used tools to assess water quality by integrating data from multiple water quality parameters. In this study, we analyzed the spatio-temporal variations of 11 water quality parameters in one of the largest plateau lakes, Erhai Lake, based on surveys from January 2014 to December 2021. Leveraging machine learning models, we gauged the relative importance of different water quality parameters to the WQI and further utilized stepwise multiple linear regression to derive an optimal minimal water quality index (WQImin) that required the minimal number of water quality parameters without compromising the performance. Our results indicated that the water quality of Erhai Lake typically showed a trend towards improvement, as indicated by the positive Mann-Kendall test for WQI performance (Z = 2.89, p < 0.01). Among the five machine learning models, XGBoost emerged as the best performer (coefficient of determination R2 = 0.822, mean squared error = 3.430, and mean absolute error = 1.460). Among the 11 water quality parameters, only four (i.e., dissolved oxygen, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total nitrogen) were needed for the optimal WQImin. The establishment of the WQImin helps reduce cost in future water quality monitoring in Erhai Lake, which may also serve as a valuable framework for efficient water quality monitoring in similar waters. In addition, the elucidation of spatio-temporal patterns and trends of Erhai Lake's water quality serves as a compass for authorities, offering insights to bolster lake management strategies in the future.

Remote sensing insights for sustainable development: Water quality and landscape dynamics in Mirik Lake, Darjeeling District, West Bengal, India

The study employs remote sensing and GIS techniques to assess the water quality dynamics of Mirik Lake, located in the Darjeeling Himalayas, West Bengal, India. To analyse the impact of land use and land cover (LULC) changes on the water quality of Mirik Lake from 1993 to 2023. Landsat imagery spanning from 1993 to 2023 was used to detect significant alterations in LULC patterns. Remote sensing and GIS techniques were utilised to analyse the data, focusing on changes in LULC and their implications for water quality. The results indicate a steady increase in total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels, attributed to anthropogenic activities such as urbanisation and tourism development. LULC change analysis highlights the expanding built-up areas and agricultural lands surrounding the lake, contributing to nutrient loading and organic pollution. The spatial distribution of pollution categories underscores the influence of tourist infrastructure on water quality degradation. Integrated watershed management and sustainable development strategies are recommended to mitigate anthropogenic impacts and preserve the ecological integrity of Mirik Lake.

Analyzing the Vertical Recharge Mechanism of Groundwater Using Ion Characteristics and Water Quality Indexes in Lake Hulun

The water level of Lake Hulun has changed dramatically in recent years. The interannual interaction between groundwater and lake water is an important factor affecting Lake Hulun’s water level. Vertical recharge between groundwater and the lake is particularly important. Based on an analysis of differences between the hydrogeochemical and water quality characteristics of the spring water, the lake water, and the surrounding groundwater, the source and recharge mechanism of the spring water in the vertical recharge lake are determined. The results show that spring water is exposed at the bottom of Lake Hulun, and there are obvious differences between spring water and lake water in lake ice thickness, ion characteristics, and water quality characteristics. For example, the ice thickness at the spring site is only 6.8% of the average ice thickness of the lake, and there is a triangular area directly above the spring water area that is not covered by ice; the ion contents of the spring water at the lake bottom were less than 50% of those in the lake water; and the NH4+-N content of the spring water at the lake bottom was only 3.0% of the mean content of the lake water. In addition, the total nitrogen (TN), dissolved oxygen (DO), and NH4+-N contents of the spring water at the lake bottom all fall outside the range of contents of the surrounding groundwater. In general, the source of the spring water at the lake bottom is not recharged by the infiltration recharge of the phreatic aquifer but by the vertical recharge of the confined aquifer. Additionally, the Lake Hulun basin may be supplied with confined water through basalt channels while it is frozen. The vertical groundwater recharge mechanism may be that spring water at the lake bottom is first supplied by the deep, confined aquifer flowing through the fault zone to the loose-sediment phreatic aquifer under the lake, and finally interacts with the lake water through the phreatic aquifer.

Effects of water replenishment on lake water quality and trophic status: An 11-year study in cold and arid regions

Water replenishment is an important measure for maintaining and improving the aquatic environmental quality of lakes. The problems of water quality deterioration and water shortage can be alleviated by introducing water of higher quality. However, the mechanism of water replenishment in the improvement of the water quality and trophic status of lakes remains unclear. This study investigated water replenishment in Wuliangsuhai Lake (WLSHL) from 2011 to 2021 by collecting seasonal water samples and conducting laboratory analyses. Water replenishment was found to be capable of significantly improving lake water quality and alleviating eutrophication. It is worth noting that single long-term water replenishment measures have limitations in improving the water quality and trophic status. The whole process was divided into three stages according to the water quality and trophic status, namely the buffer period, decline period, and stable period. During the buffer period, the water quality and trophic status showed only slight improvement because of the small amount of water replenishment and the low proportion of higher-quality water from the Yellow River. In the decline period, with increasing water replenishment, the proportion of higher-quality water from the Yellow River gradually increased, leading to the most significant and stable degree of improvement. In the stable period, increases in the amount of water replenishment had little effect on improving the water quality and trophic status, which is attributable to the balance between internal pollutants (lake water–sediment), and the balance between internal-external pollutants (lake water–irrigation return flow + Yellow River water). On the premise of stable water quality, with eutrophication control as the management goal, the optimal water replenishment would be approximately 10.58 ×108 m3. Further necessary measures for solving aquatic environmental problems include the combination of sediment dredging, optimization of the water replenishment route, and implementation of quality management in water replenishment.
