Compliance Testing of Reusable Containers for Transport of Type a Packages of Radioactive Material

Transporting radioactive materials within a medical complex comes under jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Transportation when public highways are used. A strong, reusable container to safely transport radioactive material was developed and tested at Mayo Medical Center to satisfy the requirements of the U.S. Department of Transportation and Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The container successfully completed water spray, free drop, compression, and penetration tests. It has been in use for 3 y without any loss of radioactive materials.

30 (thirty) samples of rainwear from PVC sheeting of 13 trade mark with various colour and style were tested for the purpose of this research. The quality of the rainwear is determined by the decisive factors of quality that ensure the material’s strength and satisfactory wear as described in British is Standard and ASTM. The test results of the rainwear from PVC sheeting are compilled as follow : sheet thickness 0.1479 – 0.31663, transverse tear strength 7.82 – 22,42 kg/cm 2 , longitudinal tear strength 2.82 – 13.69 kg/cm2, strength of button attachment/stitch seam strength 1.19 – 4.66 kg, color fatness to daylight 111.56 – 155.10 hour at grade 4 grey scale and dimensional stability 1.66 – 6.12 %. The test result shows that the rainwear complies the requirements of blocking test as well as water penetration test.

SOIL TESTS TO DETERMINE APPLICATION RATES FOR POLYMERIC SOIL CONDITIONERS

We have developed five different soil tests that can be used in the laboratory (two of them can also be used in the field) to determine possible rates for field application of polymeric soil conditioners to achieve desirable physical properties of soil. These tests are (1) determining rates of polymers to achieve flocculation of soils in test tubes, (2) filtering and air-dying the aggregates from the test tubes to evaluate water stability, (3) testing a range of concentrations of polymers to determine the rate that preserves existing soil aggregates, (4) treating small samples of soil with polymers, followed by curing, for water penetration tests, and (5) wet-sieving control soils and soils treated with polymers while in suspension. All tests relate to application of polymers in irrigation water, which procedure increases the efficiency severalfold due to improved spatial relationships in soil.
