Fire Impacts on the Soil Metabolome and Organic Matter Biodegradability.

Global wildfire activity has increased since the 1970s and is projected to intensify throughout the 21st century. Wildfires change the composition and biodegradability of soil organic matter (SOM) which contains nutrients that fuel microbial metabolism. Though persistent forms of SOM often increase postfire, the response of more biodegradable SOM remains unclear. Here we simulated severe wildfires through a controlled "pyrocosm" approach to identify biodegradable sources of SOM and characterize the soil metabolome immediately postfire. Using microbial amplicon (16S/ITS) sequencing and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, heterotrophic microbes (Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Protobacteria) and specific metabolites (glycine, protocatechuate, citric cycle intermediates) were enriched in burned soils, indicating that burned soils contain a variety of substrates that support microbial metabolism. Molecular formulas assigned by 21 T Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry showed that SOM in burned soil was lower in molecular weight and featured 20 to 43% more nitrogen-containing molecular formulas than unburned soil. We also measured higher water extractable organic carbon concentrations and higher CO2 efflux in burned soils. The observed enrichment of biodegradable SOM and microbial heterotrophs demonstrates the resilience of these soils to severe burning, providing important implications for postfire soil microbial and plant recolonization and ecosystem recovery.

Three years of cover crops management increased soil organic matter and labile carbon pools in a subtropical vegetable agroecosystem

AbstractCover crops have been widely adopted to improve soil functions in agroecosystems, including providing carbon (C) inputs that can contribute to soil C sequestration. However, soil C changes may be slow after introducing cover crops in unfavorable environments for soil organic matter (SOM) accumulation, like the Southeast United States subtropical region characterized by a warm humid climate, and coarse‐textured soils. We examined labile C pools as potential early indicators of SOM changes after cover crop introduction in a sandy subtropical vegetable production system. We compared the effects of four cover crop monocultures namely two grasses [sorghum sudangrass, Sorghum bicolor × S bicolor var. Sudanese and pearl millet, Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.], two legumes (sunn hemp, Crotalaria juncea L., and cowpea, Vigna unguiculata Walp.), and one four‐species mixture on soil organic carbon pools for 3 years. Soil samples were collected at a 15‐cm depth before cover crop planting and post cover crop incorporation to assess changes in SOM, permanganate‐oxidizable carbon (POX‐C), mineralizable carbon (Cmin), and water extractable organic carbon (WEOC). The incorporation of cover crops increased concentrations of SOM, POX‐C, and Cmin in year 3 relative to their baseline values in year 1. Concentration of SOM increased by 0.24 ± 0.05% (mean ± standard error) after 3 years of cover crop management. However, concentrations of WEOC significantly decreased in years 2 and 3 relative to the baseline. Monocultures and the mixture had similar effects on measured C pools, likely due to comparable aboveground biomass production. Our findings highlight the potential of POX‐C and Cmin as early indicators of SOM accumulation driven by cover crops use, as well as the capacity of cover crops to build SOM in similar subtropical systems and coarser textured soils.

Comparison of organic carbon properties in extracted soil solutions obtained underneath Cryptomeria japonica and Quercus acutissima and its implication on stream dissolved organic carbon

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in soils is released into streams, working as a main component of the carbon cycle. DOC in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems participates in many biogeochemical reactions and processes such as heterotrophic respiration, sorption of metals, and transport of pollutants. In order to understand the connectivity of organic carbon among soil, soil water, and forest streams, we investigated the concentrations and dual carbon isotope ratios (δ13C and Δ14C) of soil organic carbon (SOC) and water-extractable organic carbon (WEOC) obtained from soils beneath two tree species stands, and compared these with stream Δ14C-DOC of the forest watershed. Soil samples were collected at different depths (0–10, 10–30, and 30–50 cm) beneath Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) and sawtooth oak (Quercus acutissima). Although the SOC concentration was not significantly different between the two tree species, the WEOC concentration ([WEOC]) of soil at 0–10 cm depth under Cryptomeria japonica was higher than that of Quercus acutissima, in general. The δ13C-SOC and δ13C-WEOC increased, while the Δ14C-SOC and Δ14C-WEOC decreased with increasing soil depth. The Δ14C-WEOC was higher than the Δ14C-SOC, indicating that WEOC could be primarily derived from the young, hydrophilic, and exchangeable fraction of SOC, rather than from SOC strongly bonded to mineral soils. However, the stream Δ14C-DOC was lower than Δ14C-WEOC in general, except during summer storms. The 14C-depleted DOC released from deep soils or groundwater might lower Δ14C-DOC of a stream, suggesting that relatively old DOC could be released into streams during baseflow. This is contrary to the results of previous studies that have reported positive stream Δ14C-DOC from temperate forests. The discrepancy warrants future research on forest stream Δ14C-DOC across entire seasons, particularly under Asian monsoon climates.

Tree mycorrhizal type controls over soil water-extractable organic matter quantity and biodegradation in a subtropical forest of southern China

Tree mycorrhizal type is believed to be a key factor controlling soil organic matter dynamics in forests, yet its effects on soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) quantity and biodegradation remain unknown, especially in sub/tropical forests. Here, we used soil water-extractable organic matter (WEOM) as a proxy for soil DOM, and measured water-extractable organic carbon (WEOC), total nitrogen (WETN), and total phosphorus (WETP) concentrations, and WEOM chemical composition (i.e., aromaticity and molecular weight) in the 0–10 cm and 10–30 cm mineral soil depths along the gradient ranging from arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM)- to ectomycorrhizal (ECM)-associated tree dominance in a subtropical secondary forest of southern China. Subsequently, we assessed soil WEOM biodegradation using a 42-day aerobic incubation experiment. At each soil depth, WEOC concentration and WEOC:WETN ratio increased with increasing ECM tree dominance, whereas WEOM aromaticity and molecular weight exhibited an opposite changing trend. Moreover, WEOC concentration correlated positively with soil organic C, total N, total P, and sand content, but correlated negatively with soil pH and clay and silt contents. Soil WEOM biodegradation did not change with ECM tree dominance in 0–10 cm depth but decreased with increasing ECM tree dominance in 10–30 cm depth. Soil WEOM biodegradation was negatively related to WEOC:WETP and WETN:WETP ratios, but was positively related to WEOM aromaticity and molecular weight. These findings suggested that tree mycorrhizal type is a potential indicator of soil DOM concentration and biodegradation, and highlight that the shifts in dominance of AM- and ECM-associated trees will influence soil DOM dynamics by altering soil texture, C:N:P stoichiometry, and C quality in subtropical forests.

Experimental drought increased the belowground sink strength towards higher topsoil organic carbon stocks in a temperate mature forest

Reduced carbon assimilation by trees is often considered to lower the overall carbon sink function of drought-stressed forests. However, soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks may respond differently to drought than ecosystem carbon flux dynamics, leading to imprecise predictions of soil carbon sequestration when one value is inferred from the other. As a major component of soil organic matter, SOC is the largest actively cycling terrestrial carbon reservoir, and thus fulfills various important ecosystem services. Yet, there is uncertainty about how SOC quantity and quality respond to drought in temperate forests. This study addressed the depth distribution of SOC stocks and soil organic matter stability in a forest exposed to artificial drought for five consecutive growing seasons below clusters of temperate mature deciduous beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and coniferous spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.). In addition to SOC stock determination, we measured concentrations of water-extractable organic carbon (WEOC), performed density fractionation, and determined beta values of SOC (slopes of linear regressions between δ13C of soil and log-transformed SOC content throughout soil depth profiles). Following drought, SOC stocks down to 30 cm depth increased by a factor of 1.5 under P. abies while they did not change with drought under F. sylvatica. Under both species, SOC stocks in the mineral topsoil (0–5 cm soil depth) increased by >80 % with drought, increasing the relative contribution of this thin depth section to total SOC from 5 % to >30 %. At 5–15 cm soil depth, SOC stocks decreased with drought under F. sylvatica but not under P. abies. With drought, carbon in the free light fraction (fLF) increased under F. sylvatica but declined marginally under P. abies. Results from density fractionation and beta values suggest decreased soil organic matter stability under F. sylvatica and increased stability under P. abies. Greater SOC accumulation suggests that the belowground carbon sink strength of drought-stressed forests increases, which contrasts with reduced ecosystem carbon uptake under drought.

Temporal changes in the nutrient content of cattle dung in the Nebraska Sandhills ecosystem

Dung excreted by cattle composes a significant portion of the nutrient inputs in a grazed ecosystem and can have wide-ranging effects on soil properties and vegetation. However, little research has been conducted on the nutrient dynamics of excreted dung in situ that has not been disturbed prior to field sampling. In this study, we analyzed 294 dung pats (1–24 days old) collected from a Nebraska Sandhills meadow to determine water-extractable organic carbon (WEOC), water-extractable nitrogen (WEN), water-extractable phosphorus (WEP), and percent dry matter (DM) changes over time. In addition, we investigated if sample handling - frozen storage – and the formation of surface crust during dung field drying affect dung nutrient concentrations. Dung WEOC and WEN both followed exponential decay curves of nutrient loss over time and were modeled as a function of age. In contrast, WEP was poorly correlated with age. The percent dry matter in conjunction with sample WEOC concentration were stronger determinants of WEP than age alone. Freezing samples prior to analysis increased WEOC (37–98%) and WEN (37–123%), but lowered WEP (0.8–65%) compared to the samples from the same dung pat analyzed fresh. The dry surface crusts of dung pats had higher WEOC (98–112%) and WEN (112%) compared to moist interiors (on average, 3 cm from surface). This research provides evidence that dung nutrient concentrations decreased by 73% (WEOC) and 76% (WEN) over 24 days and shows that frozen storage and subsequent thawing for analysis, as well as crust formation during field drying, can significantly affect dung nutrient concentrations and spatial partitioning of dung nutrients.

Understanding the Impact of Liquid Organic Fertilisation and Associated Application Techniques on N2, N2O and CO2 Fluxes from Agricultural Soils

The prediction of liquid manure effects on N transformations in soils and the associated N2O and N2 fluxes is poor because previous investigations have mostly excluded N2. The objectives of this study were thus to quantify N2, N2O and CO2 fluxes, the source processes of N2O, N2O reduction and the depth distribution of moisture, NO3−, NH4+, water-extractable organic carbon concentration and pH in a laboratory incubation study with sandy arable soil using 15N tracing to quantify N processes and gaseous fluxes. The soil was amended with and without artificial slurry in various manure treatments (control, surface and injected) and incubated for 10 days at varying moisture levels, where the depth distribution of control parameters was determined twice during the experiment. Manure application was found to increase N2 and N2O fluxes from denitrification, with the highest fluxes occurring in the wet manure injection treatment (33 ± 32 mg N m−2 d−1 and 36.1 ± 39.1 mg N m−2 d−1, respectively), confirming that manure injection under wet conditions enhances denitrification and possibly also N2O fluxes. This study concluded that the current dataset is suitable as a first step towards improving the capability of biogeochemical models to predict manure application effects, but further studies with more soils and refined experiments are needed.

Response of subsoil organic matter contents and physical properties to long‐term, high‐rate farmyard manure application

AbstractApplication of farmyard manure (FYM) is common practice to improve physical and chemical properties of arable soil and crop yields. However, studies on effects of FYM application mainly focussed on topsoils, whereas subsoils have rarely been addressed so far. We, therefore, investigated the effects of 36‐year FYM application with different rates of annual organic carbon (OC) addition (0, 469, 938 and 1875 g C m−2 a−1) on OC contents of a Chernozem in 0–30 cm (topsoil) and 35–45 cm (subsoil) depth. We also investigated its effects on soil structure and hydraulic properties in subsoil. X‐ray computed tomography was used to analyse the response of the subsoil macropore system (≥19 μm) and the distribution of particulate organic matter (POM) to different FYM applications, which were related to contents in total OC (TOC) and water‐extractable OC (WEOC). We show that FYM‐C application of 469 g C m−2 a−1 caused increases in TOC and WEOC contents only in the topsoil, whereas rates of ≥938 g C m−2 a−1 were necessary for TOC enrichment also in the subsoil. At this depth, the subdivision of TOC into different OC sources shows that most of the increase was due to fresh POM, likely by the stimulation of root growth and bioturbation. The increase in subsoil TOC went along with increases in macroporosity and macropore connectivity. We neither observed increases in plant‐available water capacity nor in unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. In conclusion, only very high application of FYM over long periods can increase OC content of subsoil at our study site, but this increase is largely based on fresh, easily degradable POM and likely accompanied by high C losses when considering the discrepancy between OC addition rate by FYM and TOC response in soil.Highlights A new image processing procedure to distinguish fresh and decomposed POM. The increase of subsoil C stock based to a large extend on fresh, labile POM. Potential of arable subsoils for long‐term C storage by large FYM application rates is limited. The increase in TOC has no effect on hydraulic properties of the subsoil.

Soil organic matter qualification with FTIR spectroscopy under different soil types in Estonia

Soil organic matter (SOM) is a heterogeneous material consisting of different functional groups depending on soil texture and moisture regime. The lability of SOM (rapidity of turnover rate) is also an important indicator in soil quality evaluation. In this study, SOM lability (p-WEOC) was assessed based on the proportion of total soil organic carbon (SOC) represented by water-extractable organic carbon (WEOC) for a wide range of Estonian arable soils. We applied Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to examine the SOM relationships between qualitative (functional groups, SOM lability (p-WEOC), hydrophobicity (HI), degree of degradation (DDI), and water repellency (W)) and quantitative (total SOC and WEOC concentration) parameters depending on soil texture and moisture regime. Gleysols had the highest SOC and WEOC concentrations and p-WEOC was typically highest in automorphic sandy soils and lowest in sandy Gleysols. Overall, p-WEOC values for Gleysols were lower than those for automorphic soils. SOC and WEOC concentrations were positively correlated with all measured absorbance peaks and p-WEOC was negatively correlated with some peaks but positively correlated with DDI. HI and W were highest in Gleysols; however, sandy and automorphic soils had higher DDI. In general, automorphic soils had higher lability and the SOM was more degraded than wet soils. In summary, it is possible to assess and compare SOM composition in different soil types with FTIR spectroscopy, although eliminating inorganic material from soil will provide more accurate results.

Repeated freeze–thaw cycles increase extractable, but not total, carbon and nitrogen in a Maine coniferous soil

Northeastern North America has been experiencing warmer winters with reduced snow accumulation, with more frequent winter freeze–thaw cycles. We conducted a laboratory experiment to investigate how increased frequency of freeze–thaw cycles (FTC) would alter soil C and N availability. Organic (O) and mineral (B) horizon soils were collected from a coniferous forest in Maine, processed to exclude roots, and then frozen in the laboratory (−10 °C) with one (FTC-1), two (FTC-2), or six (FTC-6) thaw periods (+5 °C). Soils were analyzed for extractable ammonium (NH4-N), water extractable organic carbon (WEOC), carbon dioxide flux (respiration), and total C and N. Extractable NH4-N increased following FTC (all levels), for both horizons. While WEOC concentrations did not change for FTC vs. control, the WEOC in O horizons had a lower SUVA254 in FTC soils compared to control, indicating a stronger microbial influence (i.e., microbial cell lysis) in these soils after FTC. Respiration in O horizon soils decreased post-incubation and did not differ between FTC and Control soils. In the B horizon, however, FTC soils showed greater respiration than Control soils, suggesting that the newly available nutrients may have stimulated microbial activity. In contrast to these results, total C and N remained unaltered by FTC, presumably because the FTC disturbances represented mostly a translocation of C and N from one pool into another, and losses due to respiration were too small to significantly influence the large TC and TN pools. The effect of FTC on NH4-N did not change with FTC frequency, suggesting that a single FTC is sufficient to alter both C and N availability and/or quality, and that additional FTC may not have a significant further effect. This study provides fresh insights on how organic and mineral horizon soils might respond to increased freeze–thaw frequency in winter.

Effects of soil amendments on fractions and stability of soil organic matter in saline-alkaline paddy

Soil amelioration is an effective practice to alleviate the adverse effects of soil salinization. However, increasing the fertility of salt-affected soils has been challenging, particularly in coastal saline-alkaline paddy soils. Here, we carried out a 45-day incubation experiment to evaluate the impacts of soil amendments on fractions and stability of soil organic matter (SOM) in a saline-alkaline paddy. The experiment simulates the flooding-draining practice and consists of CaCO3, gypsum and biochar amendments using different fertility soils. We measured dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) in supernatant liquids, water-soluble cations, water extractable organic carbon (WEOC) and nitrogen (WEON), and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and nitrogen (MBN) in soils after the incubation. Results showed that water soluble sodium (Na+) was significantly decreased under all amendments (by 17%–32%), except in high fertility soil. We found a significant decrease in DOC (by 36%–47%) under gypsum treatment, but in DON (by 18%–59%) under biochar treatment. However, there was no significant effect on DOC or DON under CaCO3 treatment. Gypsum treatment led to decreased WEOC content (by 0.067%–5.4%), but increased MBC (by 0.16%–44%) and MBN (by 8.3%–37%) in all soils. Biochar treatment caused a decrease in the ratios of WEOC to soil organic carbon (SOC) and WEON to total nitrogen (TN), and an increase in MBC:SOC and MBN:TN ratios. These results suggest that gypsum and biochar amendments can enhance SOM stability in the saline-alkaline paddy. However, SOM stability was not enhanced under CaCO3 treatment, probably due to the presence of a large amount of Na+ in these soils. Our study highlights that soil amelioration has different effects on soil carbon and nitrogen cycles in the saline-alkaline paddy soils, which is associated with water-logged condition.

Soil carbon dynamics during drying vs. rewetting: Importance of antecedent moisture conditions

Soil moisture influences soil carbon dynamics, including microbial growth and respiration. The response of such ‘soil respiration’ to moisture changes is generally assumed to be linear and reversible, i.e. to depend only on the current moisture state. Current models thus do not account for antecedent soil moisture conditions when determining soil respiration or the available substrate pool. We conducted a laboratory incubation to determine how the antecedent conditions of drought and flood influenced soil organic matter (SOM) chemistry, bioavailability, and respiration. We sampled soils from an upland coastal forest, Beaver Creek, WA USA, and subjected them to drying and rewetting treatments. For the drying treatment, field moist soils were saturated and then dried to 75, 50, 35, and 5% saturation. In the rewetting treatment, field moist soils were air-dried and then rewet to 35, 50, 75, and 100% saturation. We measured respiration and water extractable organic carbon (WEOC) concentrations and used 1H-NMR and FT-ICR-MS to characterize the WEOC pool across the treatments. The drying vs. wetting treatment strongly influenced SOM bioavailability, as rewet soils (with antecedent drought) had greater WEOC concentrations and respiration fluxes compared to the drying soils (with antecedent flood). In addition, air-dry soils had the highest WEOC concentrations, and the NMR-resolved peaks showed a strong contribution of protein groups in these soils. Both NMR and FT-ICR-MS analyses indicated increased contribution of complex aromatic groups/molecules in the rewet soils, compared to the drying soils. We suggest that drying introduced organic matter into the WEOC pool via desorption of aromatic molecules and/or by microbial cell lysis, and this stimulated microbial mineralization rates. Our work indicates that even short-term shifts in antecedent moisture conditions can strongly influence soil C dynamics at the core scale. The predictive uncertainties in current soil models may be reduced by a more accurate representation of soil water and C persistence that includes a mechanistic and quantitative understanding of the impact of antecedent moisture conditions.

Responses of soil WEOM quantity and quality to freeze–thaw and litter manipulation with contrasting soil water content: A laboratory experiment

Future climatic change is likely to increase the occurrence of soil freeze–thaw (FT) events in high latitude and/or high altitude zones, which can substantially influence the dynamics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released into the soils. However, it is not clear how the quantity and quality of soil DOM respond to changing FT patterns under different soil moisture and litter manipulation conditions in northern temperate forest stands. In this study, litter-amended and non-amended forest soils were incubated for 360 days at three soil moisture levels (30%, 60%, and 90% water-filled pore space) and three intensities of FT disturbance (low, high, and none). We quantified heterotrophic respiration, enzyme activity, microbial biomass, and water-extractable organic matter (WEOM) as a proxy for DOM in soils during the incubation experiment. The quality of WEOM was characterized by biodegradability, UV absorbance and parallel factor analysis modelling of fluorescence excitation emission matrices. Concentrations of water-extractable organic carbon (WEOC) and biodegradable WEOC declined continuously in all treatments over the 360-day incubation period. The dominant component of fluorescent WEOM shifted from humic- and fulvic- like components during the first 108 days of incubation, to protein-like components of microbial origin, characterized by high aromaticity, at the end of the incubation period. Litter amendment, FT disturbance, and their interaction increased WEOC concentrations in soils during the early 108-day incubation period, particularly in soils with low moisture and high FT intensity, but these increases disappeared after 252 days incubation at 15 °C. Litter-derived fluorescent WEOM in soils without FT disturbance was dominated by protein-like components after 14 days of incubation, but these were replaced by humic- and fulvic-like components after 108 days. This replacement effect was weaker in soils with FT disturbance, which we attribute to changes in microbial properties, including enzyme activity, microbial biomass and activity.

Mitigation of CO2, CH4 and N2O from Acidic Clayey Soil Amended with Fertilizer Pellets Based on Alkaline Organic Residues

Alkaline organic residues, such as wood ash (WA), deinking paper sludge (DPS), and mixed paper sludge (MPS) could have a significant potential for mitigating greenhouse gases (GHG) when they are used for land application. The DPS was mixed and then granulated with MPS, WA and/or composted DPS to form pellets. A 56-d incubation study was carried out to investigate the effect of alkaline organic residue pellets on: (1) the biological and chemical properties of acidic clayey soil; (2) on carbon dioxide (CO2), on methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) soil emissions. The experimental design included eight different treatments: unfertilized control (Control), fertilized control with mineral nitrogen (controlF), and six pelleted alkaline organic residue amendments (T1–T6) combined with mineral nitrogen fertilizer. The six amendments were: (T1) 100% DPS; (T2) 100% composted [50% poultry manure and 50% T1]; (T3) 50%WA + 50% T1; (T4) 50% WA + 50% T2; (T5) 50%T2 + 30%WA + 20% MPS; (T6) 50% T1 + 30%WA + 20% MPS. The results showed that alkaline residues significantly increased soil pH, the concentration of water-extractable organic carbon, and water-extractable nitrogen. Alkaline treatments had a positive effect on soil microbial activity. The highest mitigation efficiency of cumulative CO2 was obtained with T4, which released 10% less CO2 than other treatments. No significant effect on cumulative CH4 emissions was observed. Total cumulative N2O emissions were reduced by 37% with T5. Our study also showed that organic pellets based on alkaline residues improved the soil properties and can play a role in the mitigation of GHG in acidic clayey soil. Therefore, the co-application of alkaline organic residue pellets with chemical fertilizer might be considered as a sustainable approach in agriculture.

Investigation on labile organic carbons in soils developed from limestone and sandstone in karst areas of southwest China

Although labile soil organic carbons (LSOC) represent only a small part of soil organic carbon (SOC), they are an important source of energy for the belowground portion of the ecosystem and play a crucial role regarding changes in the quality of soil organic matter (SOM). This study measured and compared the content of LSOC and SOC in limestone soil (developed from limestone) and sandstone soil (developed from sandstone) in the karstic area of southwest China to better understand the impacts of different soil types on LSOC (water-extractable and readily oxidizable organic carbon) and evaluate the existence of a possible relationship between LSOC and SOC in the soil. The results demonstrated that the amounts of SOC, soil readily oxidizable carbon (SROC), and soil water-extractable organic carbon (WEOC) (hot-water extractable organic carbon (hot-WEOC) and cold-water extractable organic carbon (cold-WEOC)) were the highest in the surface soil and decreased with increasing depth in both types of soil profiles. In addition, the content of SOC and LSOC were significantly higher in the limestone soil profiles than those in the sandstone soil profiles. This may be as a result of the occurrence of higher pH values and higher content of calcium, magnesium, and clay minerals in the limestone soil than in the sandstone soil. The proportions of WEOC in total SOC extracted at 25°C and 70°C in the sandstone soil profiles displayed higher average values of 0.040% and 0.527%, respectively, whereas the limestone soil profiles displayed lower average values of 0.015% and 0.255% for the WEOC extracted at 25°C and 70°C, respectively. Regarding the SROC content, both soil profiles showed higher values than WEOC content, ranging from 39.4%–55.2%. The results also showed that for the two types of soils significant correlations were found between samples of SROC, WEOC, and SOC (P < 0.01). Among the LSOC, the hot-WEOC showed clear differences between different soil types, and significant relationships were observed for not only SOC but also SROC. The correlation coefficients between hot-WEOC and SOC or SROC were higher than those between cold-WEOC and SOC or SROC. This study, therefore, suggests that hot-WEOC could be a useful indicator of changes in the quality of SOM in different soil types.

Impact of conventional agriculture on the concentration and quality of water-extractable organic matter (WEOM) in the surface horizons of Retisols—A case study from the Carpathian Foothills in Poland

In spite of many studies focused on the impact of land use changes on soil organic carbon (SOC) and the total nitrogen (TN) and soil organic matter (SOM) budget, less is known about the fate of water-extractable organic matter (WEOM) after the conversion of forestland to conventional farmland. The main aims of this study were: 1) to determine the concentration of water-extractable organic carbon (WEOC) and water-extractable total nitrogen (WETN) in topsoil horizons of forestland soils and cropland soils in the Carpathian Foothills in southern Poland and 2) to determine the quality of WEOM in topsoil horizons of forestland soils and cropland soils. Soil samples from topsoil horizons of forestland soils (Oi and Ah horizons) and cropland soils (Ap horizons) were collected and the concentration of WEOC and WETN was determined. In addition, the quality of WEOM was determined using ultraviolet-visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy. The results of this comparative study clearly indicate that conventional agriculture significantly affects the concentration and quality of WEOM in surface soil horizons of Retisols in the Carpathian Foothills in southern Poland. Surface horizons of arable soils (Ap horizons) are characterized by a significantly lower mean concentration of WEOC and WETN in comparison with surface horizons of forestland soils (Oi and Ah horizons), and reflect changes in the content of bulk SOC and TN due to soil tillage. Mean concentrations of WEOC and WETN in the studied Ap horizons of arable soils are 1.98 mg l−1 and 0.15 mg l−1, respectively while the mean concentrations of WEOC and WETN in the Ah horizons of forestland soils are 15.53 mg l−1 and 0.84 mg l−1, respectively. The studied Oi horizons of forestland soils are characterized by the highest mean concentration of WEOC (44.53 mg l−1) and WETN (6.22 mg l−1). Mean specific UV absorbance values at wavelength of 254 nm (SUVA254) was the highest for WEOM from Ap horizons indicating the highest transformation of WEOM in these horizons. Mean FTIR-ATR absorption bands of WEOM obtained from Oi and Ah horizons are much more intensive than the bands of WEOM from Ap horizons, which is related to significantly lower concentration of WEOM in the latter horizons in comparison with Oi and Ah horizons of forestland soils.

Dynamics of water extractable organic carbon at a subtropical catchment using fluorescence excitation‐emission matrix spectroscopy coupled with parallel factor analysis

AbstractThe vertical and horizontal movement of water extractable organic carbon (WEOC) has a significant influence on soil organic carbon (SOC) storage and water quality. However, how the amount, components and chemical qualities of WEOC change at horizontal and vertical levels, as well as desorption in the cascade model in subtropical red soils, are not fully understood. We sampled soils from four types of land (Elaeocarpus, Masson Pine, Crape‐Myrtle and a deposition site) in a subtropical catchment as replicated cores (n = 96) and investigated changes in the molecular and structural constituents of WEOC using excitation‐emission matrix fluorescence and UV–visible absorbance spectroscopy. Our results showed that WEOC concentration changed remarkably in all four plots, and that the concentration coupled with the relative abundance of aromatic compounds decreased with increasing soil depth, whereas low‐molecular‐weight materials increased with increasing soil depth. Five fluorescent components were identified by parallel factor analysis (i.e., tryptophan‐like, tyrosine‐like and three humic‐substance‐like components). The relative abundance of these components suggested that WEOC composition shifted along vertical soil layers. Dynamic variations in fluorescent indices indicated that WEOC from the subsoil has strong biological characteristics. Additionally, there was no significant correlation between WEOC and SOC in subsoil, indicating that much of the WEOC within mineral soils is of local microbial origin rather than from local soil organic matter. Sorption processes alone or stepwise exchange processes of WEOC on the soil minerals do not readily occur, as the red soil in a subtropical area is typically unsaturated and potentially has a large sorption capacity. Once soil carbon is adsorbed, it is difficult to release it into soil water by microbial processing. Data from the deposition site suggest that components of hydrophilic WEOC with low molecular weight are preferentially transported.

Altitude and Vegetation Affect Soil Organic Carbon, Basal Respiration and Microbial Biomass in Apennine Forest Soils

Both altitude and vegetation are known to affect the amount and quality of soil organic matter (SOM) and the size and activity of soil microbial biomass. However, when altitude and vegetation changes are combined, it is still unclear which one has a greater effect on soil chemical and biochemical properties. With the aim of clarifying this, we tested the effect of altitude (and hence temperature) and vegetation (broadleaf vs pine forests) on soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil microbial biomass and its activity. Soil sampling was carried out in two adjacent toposequences ranging from 500 to 1000 m a.s.l. on a calcareous massif in central Italy: one covered only by Pinus nigra J.F. Arnold forests, while the other covered by Quercus pubescens Willd., Ostrya carpinifolia Scop. and Fagus sylvatica L. forests, at 500, 700 and 1000 m a.s.l., respectively. The content of SOC and water-extractable organic carbon (WEOC) increased with altitude for the pine forests, while for the broadleaf forests no trend along the slope occurred, and the highest SOC and WEOC contents were observed in the soil at 700 m under the Ostrya carpinifolia forest. With regard to the soil microbial community, although the size of the soil microbial biomass (Cmic) generally followed the SOC contents along the slope, both broadleaf and pine forest soils showed similar diminishing trends with altitude of soil respiration (ΣCO2-C), and ΣCO2-C:WEOC and ΣCO2-C:Cmic ratios. The results pointed out that, although under the pine forests’ altitude was effective in affecting WEOC and SOC contents, in the soils along the broadleaf forest toposequence this effect was absent, indicating a greater impact of vegetation than temperature on SOC amount and pool distribution. Conversely, the similar trend with altitude of the microbial activity indexes would indicate temperature to be crucial for the activity of the soil microbial community.

Measuring the influence of environmental conditions on dissolved organic matter biodegradability and optical properties: a combined field and laboratory study

Fluorescence spectroscopy is a common tool to assess optical dissolved organic matter (DOM) and a number of characteristics, including DOM biodegradability, have been inferred from these analyses. However, recent findings on soil and DOM dynamics emphasize the importance of ecosystem-scale factors, such as physical separation of substrate from soil microbial communities and soil physiochemical cycles driving DOM stability. We apply this principle to soil derived DOM and hypothesize that optical properties can only supply information on biodegradability when evaluated in the larger ecosystem because substrate composition and the activity/abundance of the microbial community ultimately drive DOM degradation. To evaluate biodegradability in this context, we assessed aqueous soil extracts for water extractable organic carbon (WEOC) content, biodegradability, microbial biomass and DOM characteristics using fluorescence spectroscopy across a range of environmental conditions (covariant with season and land use) in northern Vermont, USA. Our results indicate that changes in environmental conditions affect composition, quantity, and biodegradability of DOM. WEOC concentrations were highest in the fall and lowest in the summer, while no significant differences were found between land covers; however, DOM biodegradability was significantly higher in the agricultural site across seasons. Despite a shift in utilized substrate from less aromatic DOM in summer to more aromatic DOM in winter, biodegradability was similar for all seasons. The only exception was cold temperature incubations where microbial activity was depressed, and processing was slowed. These results provide examples on how fluorescence based metrics can be combined with context relevant environmental parameters to evaluate bioavailability in the context of the larger ecosystem.

Dynamics of soil water extractable organic carbon and inorganic nitrogen and their environmental controls in mountain forest and meadow ecosystems in China

We investigated the differences among two types of forest (pine and oak forests) and a meadow in soil water extractable organic carbon (WEOC), ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3−) concentrations in the Qinling Mountains, China. Our results showed that soil WEOC, NH4+ and NO3− concentrations were higher in the meadow than in the forests, and they were higher in the pine forest than in the oak forest. The soil surface temperature and soil water content were positively correlated with WEOC and inorganic nitrogen concentrations (P < 0.01). In addition, there was a significantly negative correlation between soil WEOC concentration and pH (P < 0.01). Moreover, soil WEOC concentration was positively correlated with the inorganic nitrogen concentration (P < 0.01). Generally, soil WEOC concentration decreased in the forests, and increased in the meadow under warming condition. The effects of warming on soil WEOC and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations varied with time. We elucidated that warming had a significant influence on soil WEOC concentration in the pine forest, whereas soil DIN concentration was affected significantly by warming only in the meadow. Our findings indicate that soil WEOC and DIN show different responses to warming in the mountain forest and meadow ecosystems. This study could provide useful insights for the prediction of soil carbon and nitrogen cycling and their responses to climate change in the complex mountain ecosystem.
