Performance of a pilot-scale microbial electrolysis cell coupled with biofilm-based reactor for household wastewater treatment: simultaneous pollutant removal and hydrogen production.

The septic tank is the most commonly used decentralized wastewater treatment systems for household wastewater treatment in on-site applications. The removal rate of various pollutants is lower in different septic tank configurations. The integration of a microbial electrolysis cells (MEC) into septic tank or biofilm-based reactors can be a green and sustainable technology for household wastewater treatment and energy production. In this study, a 50-L septic tank was converted into a 50-L MEC coupled with biofilm-based reactor for simultaneous household wastewater treatment and hydrogen production. The biofilm-based reactor was integrated by an anaerobic packed-bed biofilm reactor (APBBR) and an aerobic moving bed biofilm reactor (aeMBBR). The MEC/APBBR/aeMBBR was evaluated at different organic loading rates (OLRs) by applying voltage of 0.7 and 1.0V. Result showed that the increase of OLRs from 0.2 to 0.44kg COD/m3 d did not affect organic matter removals. Nutrient and solids removal decreased with increasing OLR up to 0.44kg COD/m3 d. Global removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen (TN), ammoniacal nitrogen (NH4+), total phosphorus (TP) and total suspended solids (TSS) removal ranged from 81 to 84%, 84 to 85%, 53 to 68%, 88 to 98%, 11 to 30% and 76 to 88% respectively, was obtained in this study. The current density generated in the MEC from 0 to 0.41 A/m2 contributed to an increase in hydrogen production and pollutants removal. The maximum volumetric hydrogen production rate obtained in the MEC was 0.007 L/L.d (0.072 L/d). The integration of the MEC into biofilm-based reactors applying a voltage of 1.0V generated different bioelectrochemical nitrogen and phosphorus transformations within the MEC, allowing a simultaneous denitrification-nitrification process with phosphorus removal.

Insights into mixed dye pollutant degradation by oxygen and air plasma bubbling array

Abstract Synthetic organic dye pollutants pose a serious threat to the aquatic ecological environment due to their difficulty in complete degradation. This study employed a plasma bubble array reactor to degrade individual and mixed dye pollutant solutions of Sunset Yellow (SY), Methyl Orange (MO), and Methyl Violet (MV). The degradation efficiencies and mechanisms of the plasma were investigated under different working gas atmospheres. It was found that oxygen plasma degraded the target dyes and their mixtures more significantly than air plasma. Specifically, compared with air plasma, the removal of single dyes SY, MO and MV by oxygen plasma was increased by 76.6%, 13.8% and 3%, respectively, after 20 min of treatment. As for mixed dyes, after 25 min treatment, oxygen plasma removed 99.1%, which was 31.6% higher than air plasma. However, the degradation kinetic order in oxygen plasma was SY > MO > MV, while that in air plasma was MV > MO > SY. Combined with the detection of reactive oxygen-nitrogen species (RONS), the results showed that the reactive oxygen species (ROS) played an important role in the degradation of SY, and it was also important for the degradation of MO, whereas both the ROS and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) were important for the degradation of MV. Scavenger experiments revealed that hydroxyl (·OH) and superoxide anion (·O2-) played the most important roles in the degradation process. The three dyes were basically completely degraded within 14-20 minutes of treatment, with corresponding yields of 1.94-2.79 g/kWh. Possible degradation pathways for each dye were deduced based on LC-MS and the toxicities of solutions were evaluated by phytotoxicity tests and ion chromatography. The results showed that the biotoxicity of the intermediates was significantly reduced. This study may provide a feasible option for effective application of plasma technology in organic dye wastewater treatment.

Advanced Wastewater Treatment: Synergistic Integration of Reverse Electrodialysis with Electrochemical Degradation Driven by Low-Grade Heat

The reverse electrodialysis heat engine (REDHE) represents a transformative innovation that converts low-grade thermal energy into salinity gradient energy (SGE). This crucial form of energy powers reverse electrodialysis (RED) reactors, significantly changing wastewater treatment paradigms. This comprehensive review explores the forefront of this emerging field, offering a critical synthesis of key discoveries and theoretical foundations. This review begins with a summary of various oxidation degradation methods, including cathodic and anodic degradation processes, that can be integrated with RED technology. The degradation principles and characteristics of different RED wastewater treatment systems are also discussed. Then, this review examines the impact of several key operational parameters, degradation circulation modes, and multi-stage series systems on wastewater degradation performance and energy conversion efficiency in RED reactors. The analysis highlights the economic feasibility of using SGE derived from low-grade heat to power RED technology for wastewater treatment, offering the dual benefits of waste heat recovery and effective wastewater processing.

Optimal algae species inoculation strategy for algal-bacterial granular sludge: Sludge characteristics, performance and microbial community

The algal-bacterial granular sludge (ABGS) system is emerging as a promising technology for future wastewater treatment. This study assessed the impact of different algae species inoculation on granulation, performance, and microbial communities within ABGS systems. The experimental setup included single-species inoculations (Chlorella sp. (R1), Scenedesmus sp. (R2), and Desmodesmus sp. (R3)) and a mixed-species inoculation strategy (R4). Results revealed that R4 achieved the fastest completed granulation process (15 days) with the largest average granule diameter (772.93 μm) and highest physical strength (2.24 ± 0.26%) in the end of the experiment. The relative abundance of extracellular polymeric substances secreting bacteria of R4 maintained high level in whole operation time. Algae assimilation capacity and the abundance of functional bacteria can also influence removal performance. In mature stage, only the average effluent total nitrogen (3.15 ± 2.87 mg/L), total phosphorus (0.37 ± 0.27 mg/L), chemical oxygen demand (25.25 ± 2.98 mg/L) concentration in R4 was lower than that of Grade I discharge standard of municipal wastewater treatment plants in China. The best inorganic carbon utilization and lipid production ability were observed in R4 and R3, respectively. The choice of inoculated algae species was identified as a key factor for bacterial community dynamics. Overall, above results demonstrated that mixed algae species inoculation can be selected as the optimal algae inoculation strategy due to its excellent granulation, performance, and acceptable carbon utilization and lipid production.

Peroxymonosulfate activation over (Cu+ decorated g-C3N4)/Bi2WO6 composites with S-scheme heterojunction for RhB degradation

Catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is one of the important research areas in the development of advanced oxidation technology for wastewater treatment. At present, the development of high-performance catalysts for PMS activation has become a research hotspot. Herein, (Cu+ decorated g-C3N4)/Bi2WO6 ((Cu+/g-C3N4)/Bi2WO6) composite was prepared successively by calcination and solvothermal method, which was used in visible light-assisted PMS activation for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). The construction of S-scheme heterojunctions between Cu+ decorated g-C3N4 and Bi2WO6 facilitated the activation of PMS, leading to a RhB degradation ratio of 98.46 % within 50 min. The corresponding reaction kinetic was significantly improved by a factor of 2.32 and 7.94 compared with that of CCN and BWO, respectively. The enhanced performance of the (Cu+/g-C3N4)/Bi2WO6 can be attributed to the successful construction of S-scheme heterojunction, which facilitates the separation of photogenerated carriers and accelerates the PMS activation to produce abundant active species. Furthermore, the (Cu+/g-C3N4)/Bi2WO6 composites exhibit strong stability and reusability following three cycles. In addition, the intermediates produced during the RhB degradation process were investigated by liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer (LC-MS). This study provides a new insight into the preparation of S-scheme photocatalysts for the photocatalytic-PMS activation system that will achieve efficient removal of dyes from wastewater.

Uncovering pathway and mechanism of simultaneous thiocyanate detoxicity and nitrate removal through anammox and denitrification

Thiocyanate (SCN−) exists in various industries and is detrimental to the ecosystem, necessitating cost-effective and environmentally benign treatment. In response to alleviate the bacterial toxicity of SCN−, this study developed a two-stage coupled system by tandem of anammox in reactor 1 (R1) and SCN−-driven autotrophic denitrification in reactor 2 (R2), achieving simultaneous removal of SCN− and nitrogen. The total nitrogen removal efficiency of the coupled system was 92.42 ± 1.98%, with nearly 100% of SCN− elimination. Thiobacillus was responsible for SCN− degradation. The deduced degradation pathway of SCN− was via the cyanate pathway before coupling, followed by the co-action of cyanate pathway and carbonyl sulfide pathway after coupling. Although scaling-up study is needed to validate its applicability in real-world applications, this study contributes to the advancement of sustainable and cost-effective wastewater treatment technologies, being an attractive path for low-carbon nitrogen removal and greenhouse gas emission-free technology.

A Review of Strategies and Technologies for Sustainable Decentralized Wastewater Treatment

The traditional model of centralized wastewater treatment is facing substantial strain due to a confluence of global challenges. Consequently, it is imperative to evaluate the impediments and potential advantages associated with the deployment of decentralized wastewater (DW) treatment technologies and systems. Decentralized wastewater (DW) treatment represents a sustainable approach to managing and purifying wastewater across both urban and rural settings. This literature review provides a detailed examination of current advancements and challenges associated with DW treatment technologies. It specifically addresses their operational efficiency, long-term sustainability, and practical implementation across diverse environments. This review critically analyzes recent studies that highlight innovative methodologies, including the deployment of constructed wetlands, anaerobic digestion processes, and predictive models enhanced by artificial intelligence. A critical focus is placed on the ecological and economic advantages of source separation and resource recovery from wastewater streams. The issue of emerging contaminants, such as microplastics, antibiotics, and steroids, is also discussed, emphasizing the continued need for innovation in treatment technologies. Findings from various life cycle assessments are presented to illustrate the environmental impact and feasibility of decentralized systems relative to centralized alternatives. This comprehensive analysis offers valuable insights into the future trajectories of wastewater treatment research and implementation.

Tetracycline removal via photo-Fenton processes using Fe-based metal-organic frameworks loaded with Bi2S3: Performance evaluation and insights into the charge-transfer mechanism

Combining photocatalytic technology with the Fenton system may help overcome these technologies’ limitations. Photo-Fenton catalysis is economical and eco-friendly. The Fe based heterogeneous photo-Fenton process appears to be a promising wastewater treatment technology. Herein, an Fe based metal–organic framework (MIL-101 (Fe)) was produced via hydrothermal processing. Subsequently, Bi2S3 was loaded onto the surface of MIL-101 (Fe) to form a composite catalyst. A type-II heterojunction was established between MIL-101 (Fe) and Bi2S3. The 10 % Bi2S3-loaded MIL-101 (Fe) (MBS-10) was effective in the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline, particularly after H2O2 addition. This outcome was due to the enhanced generation of radical species through the photo-Fenton process. The MBS-10 photocatalyst promoted Fe (II)/Fe (III) cycling in the presence of H2O2 and under visible light irradiation. MBS-10 also showed a higher kinetic rate constant during the photocatalytic reaction compared to MIL-101 (Fe) and Bi2S3, suggesting enhanced activity through greater electron-hole separation. Furthermore, MBS-10 proved to be stable and reusable photocatalyst after four testing cycles. The charge-transfer mechanism was elucidated through radical scavenging experiments which demonstrated that superoxide and hydroxyl radicals are the major charge carriers. Therefore, the Bi2S3-MIL-101 (Fe) composite exhibits great potential for degrading tetracycline antibiotics.

Sustainability Strategies in Municipal Wastewater Treatment

The European Parliament adopted a legislative resolution of 10 April 2024 on the proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council concerning urban wastewater treatment. The reduction in pollution in discharged treated wastewater in the parameters of BOD5, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus was emphasized. Based on these results, it stated that the impacts on the quality of lakes, rivers, and seas in the EU are visible and tangible. At the same time, it was emphasized that the sector of urban wastewater removal and treatment is responsible for 0.8% of total electricity consumption and about 0.86% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the entire EU. Almost a third of these emissions could be prevented by improving the treatment process, better use of sewage sludge, and increasing energy efficiency, as well as a higher rate of use of renewable resource technologies. It is also necessary to integrate treatment processes into the circular economy. Sludge management and water reuse are suboptimal as too many valuable resources are still being wasted. This article focuses on sustainable municipal wastewater treatment, innovative and new wastewater treatment processes and technologies (combined and hybrid processes, ANAMMOX, etc.) and their use in practice with the aim of increasing environmental and energy efficiency and reducing the carbon footprint. The research is focused on the possibilities of increasing the efficiency of energy processing of sludge, reuse of nitrogen and phosphorus, sludge, and reuse of treated wastewater.

Enhanced detection of glyphosate with a Co-MOF integrated opto-electrochemical sensor

Abstract This study presents a new method for detecting the organophosphorus pesticide glyphosate using advanced scanning electrodes (SPE) and enhanced fluorescence. Metal-organic frameworks from cobalt ions were synthesized using a solvothermal method. It is characterized using Raman spectroscopy, FT-IR, and X-ray diffraction techniques. The electrocatalytic behavior of the materials was studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) examined the positive response of plants to glyphosate over a concentration range of 0.55–5.95 mM with a detection limit of 0.334 mM. The fluorescence enhancement ranges from 0.07 mM to 0.67 mM, and the detection limit is 0.0998 mM. Additionally, the selectivity of the proposed opto-electrochemical sensor was evaluated. This selection demonstrates the sensor's ability to detect glyphosate in complex wastewater matrices. This has important implications for environmental monitoring. By addressing glyphosate contamination, the sensor could significantly advance ecological remediation and monitoring strategies. The selectivity, sensitivity, and ability to operate under harsh conditions represent a significant advance in the development of efficient and reliable glyphosate technology for wastewater treatment and environmental protection. In real-sample matrices, the suggested sensor showed a good recovery of the pesticide that had been spiked.

Biochar for wastewater treatment: Addressing contaminants and enhancing sustainability: Challenges and solutions

In recent years, biochar has gained interest for its potential use in treating and removing contaminants from domestic, municipal, and industrial wastewater. When applied in fixed filter columns (BFCs), biochar can effectively immobilize, filter, and recover contaminants with high treatment efficiency. On average, COD removal is 80 %, nutrient removal is 71 % for nitrogen-ammonium and 57 % for phosphorus-phosphate, and pathogen reduction averages 2.4 log10 units. These results vary depending on factors such as the biochar's surface area, the conditions under which it was pyrolyzed, and operational parameters like hydraulic loading and retention time. Biochar addresses limitations in traditional wastewater treatment by leveraging adsorption, ion exchange, and biological degradation mechanisms. The larger surface area and functionalized surface of engineered biochar make it particularly effective in treating diverse pollutants, including heavy metals, nutrients, and emerging contaminants, such as antibiotic-resistant bacteria. As the global population and industrial activities increase, there is a pressing need for sustainable wastewater treatment technologies. Biochar addresses this need and serves as a waste valorization tool, contributing to bioenergy production, soil improvement, and other applications. The present review focuses on improving biochar's performance and durability in real-world applications by addressing challenges like physical degradation. It also proposes strategies to enhance biochar's properties and reuse potential.

Advancements in green-synthesized transition metal/metal-oxide nanoparticles for sustainable wastewater treatment: techniques, applications, and future prospects

Abstract In order to meet the demand for portable water and replenish depleting water resources caused by industrialization, urbanization, and population growth, wastewater purification has become crucial. Emerging contaminants (ECs), which include organic dyes, pesticides, pharmaceutical drugs, polyaromatic compounds, heavy metal ions, and fertilizers, among others, have caused significant disruptions to environmental balance and severe health complications. As a result, considerable effort has been devoted to the development of technologies that eliminate wastewater from effluents via adsorption, photocatalysis, and other means. However, considering the economic and environmental implications of the adopted technologies, green technology has gained significant attention owing to their eco-friendly approaches, cost-effectiveness, avoiding use of toxic and harmful chemicals and production of less-toxic by-products. Currently green-synthesized nanomaterials have seen tremendous growth in emerging as sustainable nanoadsorbents, nanocatalysts for the removal of the emerging contaminants from wastewater in highly efficient and eco-friendly manner. Thus, this review presents an overview of the various techniques utilized in wastewater treatment with a particular emphasis on the production and application of environmentally friendly transition metal/metal oxide nanoparticles as sustainable tools in wastewater treatment technology. This article also discusses the limitations and future potential of using green-synthesized transition metal/metal oxide based nanoparticles in advancing the technology on a broad scale.

Evaluation of a mixture of livestock wastewater and food waste as a substrate in a continuous-flow microbial electrolysis cell

While the efficiency of microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) systems has improved remarkably, their application in continuous reactors and wastewater treatment remains poorly understood. This study evaluated the performance of a continuous-flow MEC using livestock wastewater and food waste as substrates. The MEC system achieved a hydrogen production rate of 5.2 L/L/day using acetate as a substrate, and a rate of 2.9–4.6 L/L/day when real wastewater mixtures were used. In terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal, the system demonstrated high efficiency, with values ranging from 42.3 % to 62.2 % depending on the wastewater composition. Volatile fatty acid (VFA) removal reached up to 72.8 %. The current density averaged 9.9 A/m2 with acetate and decreased to 7.0 and 6.1 A/m2 in phases using wastewater, reflecting the adaptation of the microbial community to the more complex substrates. The microbial community was dominated by Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, and Synergistetes, with Proteobacteria showing a particularly high abundance near the anion exchange membrane (AEM) on the anode. The MEC process demonstrates substantial promise as a sustainable technology for both biohydrogen production and wastewater treatment. With further optimization and scaling, MECs could play a crucial role in the circular economy by converting waste into clean energy while simultaneously treating wastewater, offering a pathway toward more sustainable industrial and environmental practices.

Application of electro-activated persulfate oxidation enhanced with an ultraviolet process in a multi-stage flow-through filtration system for antibiotics abatement

The treatment of antibiotic wastewater from various water matrices remains challenging because of some complex pollutants in nature. Single treatment methods are often inadequate for eliminating these contaminants. The integrated technology is brilliantly effective over an individual process alone. The electro-activated persulfate oxidation enhanced with an ultraviolet process (EO/PS/UV) was established as a novel technology in antibiotic wastewater treatment. It exhibited to be highly effective with much more efficiency in degrading amoxicillin (AMX) (97.10 %) than the two couple and individual processes in a multi-stage flow-through reactor. The Box-Behnken design’s quadratic model using the response surface methodology (RSM) revealed a reasonable prediction with a suggestive correlation of R2 = 0.9986. This study shows that the AMX degradation mechanism in the EO/PS/UV process involves coordinating of SO4·-, and OH, with OH playing a more significant role. It could effectively treat the tetracycline and sulfamethoxazole within 40 min in both simulated wastewater and secondary effluent, except for tetracycline, which took only 30 min in simulated wastewater. However, AMX did not undergo sufficient removal within 100 min and required a higher EE/O compared to other pollutants. Lastly, the integrated technology has proven to be an efficient and energy-saving method for eliminating antibiotics with promising standpoints for various wastewater treatments.

Use of embedding immobilized biofillers to improve hydrolysis acidification efficiency in domestic wastewater treatment

This study evaluated the effectiveness of embedding immobilization technology in wastewater treatment and its capacity to enhance the hydrolysis acidification process. Based on this technology, a stable anaerobic environment has been maintained. Results showed that the rates of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) conversion both exceeded 98 % under short hydraulic retention time (HRT = 2h) and ambient temperature. Notably, acetic acid and propionic acid comprised up to 90.9 % of the total volatile fatty acids in the effluent, providing suitable carbon sources for downstream denitrification. 16S rRNA gene sequencing indicated that biofillers effectively enriched and retained functional bacteria, causing norank_Anaerolineaceae (11.6 %-29.7 %) and norank_Bacteroidetes_vadinHA17 (10.8 %-14.9 %) as the dominant genera in the reactor, which were crucial for refractory organic matter degradation. Immobilized biofillers effectively improved wastewater biodegradability, supporting a stable microbial community with high DON and DOP conversion rates as well as increased VFA accumulation.

Photocatalytic Fenton-like degradation of Acid Green 25 by novel aluminum nanoferrites with persulfate: Optimization by response surface methodology

Magnetic nanomaterials are gaining increasing attention for their catalytic properties and ease of recovery, making them promising candidates for the degradation of various organic pollutants. In this study, AlFe2O4 nanoparticles were employed for the first time in photocatalytic wastewater treatment. The study focused on removing Acid Green 25 anthraquinone dye through persulfate activation under UV-Visible light. AlFe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized via sol-gel auto-combustion method and characterized by various techniques (XRD, SEM, EDX, VSM, Raman and FTIR). Moreover, statistical analysis of the experimental data confirmed the strong performance of the RSM model in accurately representing the photocatalytic process. Under optimal conditions including persulfate and catalyst concentrations of 0.3 g/L and 0.83 g/L respectively, a solution pH of 3 and 45 minutes of contact time, a 96 % dye removal rate was achieved. The remaining persulfate concentration was 60 % and fully depleted within 90 minutes, indicating efficient activation by AlFe2O4 photocatalyst. The activation process effectively suppressed electron-hole recombination, enhancing the overall efficiency. Scavenger experiments further identified surface-bound radicals and photogenerated holes as the main reactive species. A degradation mechanism for AG25 dye via a photocatalytic Fenton-like process was proposed, highlighting dual synergistic catalysis in the dye degradation. Ecotoxicity assessments using Vibrio fischeri bioassay revealed a significant reduction in toxicity after treatment with AlFe2O4/PS/UV-Vis system. The stability of AlFe2O4 was demonstrated over five degradation cycles. The findings open new perspectives for the use of AlFe2O4 in advanced wastewater treatment technologies, positioning it as a promising material for the degradation of persistent pollutants.

Energy band management of corn-like ZnO/Ag2S heterojunctions for efficient light harvesting and enhanced photocatalysis.

Corn-like ZnO/Ag2S heterojunctions are designed and prepared by the solvothermal method and the subsequent covering process. They construct a type II core-shell heterojunction structure. This structure adjusts the relative positions of electron energy levels and generates a strong and broad absorption band, while emitting weak visible light. It also facilitates the transfer of photoexcited carriers through the interface and the confinement of the same by the different components of the nanostructure. Separation of electrons and holes makes them possible to drift to the surface of ZnO and Ag2S and to participate in the redox reactions. In addition, the presence of many defects produces many active sites on the surface of the lattice. So, the ZnO/Ag2S heterojunctions exhibit excellent photocatalytic properties in the first and second cycles of the photocatalytic process. It degrades 97.7% Rhodamine B only in 18min. This study plays a significant role in promoting visible light catalysis, the efficiency of wastewater treatment technology, and the water environment on the earth.

Enhancing Greywater Treatment: High-Efficiency Constructed Wetlands with Seashell and Ceramic Brick Substrates

Constructed wetland (CW) systems have been recognized as a sustainable technology for wastewater treatment that can be easily integrated into the local natural environment, offering both low cost and high efficiency. In this study, synthetic greywater was treated using a vertical subsurface flow CW operated in batch mode with 7-day cycles across two phases, operated in parallel: I, non-vegetated, and II, vegetated, with Echinodorus subalatus. The mixed filter bed was composed of seashells, ceramic brick fragments, and sand. No statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) were observed between the non-vegetated and vegetated phases for most parameters. The removal efficiencies of organic matter, anionic surfactants, and total phosphorus in the non-vegetated versus vegetated phases were (91.0 ± 3.8)% versus (94.0 ± 1.1)%; (71.9 ± 14.1)% versus (60.0 ± 9.5)%; and (35.2 ± 4.6)% versus (40.2 ± 15.5)%, respectively. Phosphorus removal exceeded values reported in the literature for both phases, primarily due to the calcium present in the seashells, which increased the electrical conductivity and hardness of the effluent compared to the influent. The macrophyte exhibited leaf desiccation, possibly due to contact with greywater and its young age (30 days), which may have negatively impacted the system’s performance during the vegetated phase.

Application of Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Technology in Rural Domestic Wastewater Treatment

The management of domestic wastewater in rural areas has always been challenging due to characteristics such as the wide distribution and dispersion of rural households. There are numerous domestic sewage discharge methods used in rural areas, and it is difficult to treat the sewage. To address this problem, decentralized wastewater treatment systems (DWTSs) have been installed around the globe to reuse and recycle wastewater for non-potable uses such as firefighting, toilet flushing, and landscape irrigation. This study compares the currently implemented treatment processes by investigating them from the point of view of their performance and their advantages and disadvantages to provide new ideas for the development of rural wastewater treatment technologies. According to conventional treatment technologies including activated sludge (OD, A/O, A/A/O, SBR), biofilm (biofilter, MBBR, biological contact oxidation, biofluidized bed) and biogas digesters, natural biological treatment technologies including artificial wetlands (surface flow, vertical flow, horizontal submerged flow artificial wetlands), soil percolation systems (slow, fast, subsurface percolation and surface diffusion) and stabilization pond technology and combined treatment technologies are categorized and further described.
