Uses of Urban Sewer Water for Agriculture in Nanded City, Maharashtra, India

Abstract: Estimating the effluent's quality is crucial for much wastewater research, as wastewater's chemical and physical characteristics influence its amount and usability. Field observations regarding the source or circumstances of wastewater occurring, the source of pollution, and other relevant factors that may impact wastewater quality are considered when assessing wastewater quality. The sustainability of wastewater for use is evaluated based on factors including pH, EC, TDS, hardness, total alkalinity, chloride, nitrate, sodium, and potassium. The assessment of sewer sustainability for irrigation is contingent upon its electrical conductivity and sodium content. These investigations were conducted in 2022 and 2023. Water samples gathered from industrial effluent, primarily used in farmlands and solely in the nearby areas, were examined in this study.

Utilisation of livestock by-products for resource-saving biogas production in industrial pork production

Modern energy systems are complex multi-component systems that use mechanical, thermal, and electrical energy. As fossil fuel reserves decline, interest in renewable energy sources is growing everywhere, which is driving research into biogas production technologies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate technological approaches to reduce resource costs to produce renewable energy sources from organic waste (manure) from pig farms. This study employed the bibliographic method of research, laboratory method, biochemical methods (determination of the chemical composition of manure and wastewater), statistical, mathematical (calculation of economic efficiency), multicriteria analysis, and analytical method. Based on the conducted research, a resource-saving technology for the preparation of wastewater for use in the production of renewable energy in industrial pork production was developed, which ensures a reduction in capital and operating costs for biogas generation. It was found that the settling of the initial wastewater with a moisture content of 96.94±0.18% produces a sediment with a moisture content of 91.23±0.25% and a liquid fraction with a moisture content of 98.86±0.42%. At the same time, the organic matter in the sediment extracted from the original wastewater is about 87%, and in the liquid fraction – about 98% of the dry matter. The technological process includes centrifugal and gravity separation of the initial wastewater into fractions (sediment and liquid fraction), gravitational thickening of the sediment and its dosing for methane digestion to produce biogas. It was shown that the application of the proposed approaches can reduce capital investments by about 30%. Based on the multicriteria analysis, it was found that the proposed biogas production technology has a significant advantage in terms of the complex efficiency indicator of each of the considered options N(Ck) compared to the idealised one. For this technology, the objective function is the smallest according to the criteria considered and amounts to 0.1672, while the objective function of the baseline technology is 1.9 times worse. Electrodialysis treatment of rhamnolipids hydrolysate and its waste water for use as water-soluble fertilizer

Rhamnolipids can serve as a precursor for rhamnose production, but using ion exchange resin in purifying rhamnolipids hydrolysate results in excessive high-salinity wastewater, making the process environmentally and economically unfeasible. This study introduced electrodialysis technology as an alternative for purifying rhamnolipids hydrolysate, significantly reducing wastewater to less than 5 % compared to the resin method. To achieve zero wastewater discharge, the electrodialysis-treated wastewater was repurposed into a water-soluble fertilizer containing 7.1 g/L of rhamnolipids, 11.4 g/L of fatty acid, 2.4 g/L of amino acid, and 8.2 g/L of potassium. Unlike traditional fertilizers, the nutritional components with rhamnolipids showed remarkable potential in enhancing tomato plant growth, flowering, and fruit quality. Taken together, the electrodialysis treatment of rhamnolipids hydrolysate largely reduced the water volume, the economic cost, and took a full use of the final wastewater as efficient water-soluble fertilizers, making it applicable for large-scale rhamnose production.

Amination-modified lignin recovery of aqueous phosphate for use as binary slow-release fertilizer

To address the global phosphorus crisis and solve the problem of eutrophication in water bodies, the recovery of phosphate from wastewater for use as a slow-release fertilizer and to improve the slow-release performance of fertilizers is considered an effective way. In this study, amine-modified lignin (AL) was prepared from industrial alkali lignin (L) for phosphate recovery from water bodies, and then the recovered phosphorus-rich aminated lignin (AL-P) was used as a slow-release N and P fertilizer. Batch adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption process was consistent with the Pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model. In addition, ion competition and actual aqueous adsorption experiments showed that AL had good adsorption selectivity and removal capacity. The adsorption mechanism included electrostatic adsorption, ionic ligand exchange and cross-linked addition reaction. In the aqueous release experiments, the rate of nitrogen release was constant and the release of phosphorus followed a Fickian diffusion mechanism. Soil column leaching experiments showed that the release of N and P from AL-P in soil followed the Fickian diffusion mechanism. Therefore, AL recovery of aqueous phosphate for use as a binary slow-release fertilizer has great potential to improve the environment of water bodies, enhance nutrient utilization and address the global phosphorus crisis.

The technological scheme for wastewater treatment forming after washing plastic wastes was proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme was tested in the laboratory. A four-chamber mechanical flotation machine for washing plastic waste has been developed, as well as a column flotation tank for post-treatment of greasy wastewater for use in industrial practice.

Determining Farmers’ Awareness About Climate Change Mitigation and Wastewater Irrigation: A Pathway Toward Green and Sustainable Development

The present study was conducted in one of the major agriculture areas to check farmers’ awareness of climate change, adaptation measurements, and use of wastewater for irrigation. A semi-structured questionnaire was adopted from the existing literature, it was divided into different parts such as demographic information, use of wastewater for irrigation, farmer’s livelihood assets, climate change deciding factors, and adaptation measures, and some statistical tools (correlation and regression) were used to analyze the data. The farmers with enough resources and assets regarded themselves as safer and have enough capacity to bear the negative impacts of climate change. Farmers’ assets (FA) with determinants of climate change (DCC) and adaption measures (AM) are highly significant with the correlation values of 0.440 and 0.466, respectively, and DCC with AM (0.269). The correlation values for other variables are: gender with cultivated land 0.202, wastewater use (WWU) 0.419, farmers’ assets (FA) 0.766, determinants of climate change (DCC) 0.381, and adaption measures (AM) 0.449. Floods and droughts variables have shown a significant relationship with adaption measures at p-value 0.000 and coefficient 0.176 and p-value 0.021 and coefficient 0.063, respectively. The study will aid in the implementation of effective monitoring and public policies to promote integrated and sustainable water development.

Monitoring COVID-19 through SARS-CoV-2 quantification in wastewater: progress, challenges and prospects.

SummaryWastewater‐Based Epidemiology (WBE) is widely used to monitor the progression of the current SARS‐CoV‐2 pandemic at local levels. In this review, we address the different approaches to the steps needed for this surveillance: sampling wastewaters (WWs), concentrating the virus from the samples and quantifying them by qPCR, focusing on the main limitations of the methodologies used. Factors that can influence SARS‐CoV‐2 monitoring in WWs include: (i) physical parameters as temperature that can hamper the detection in warm seasons and tropical regions, (ii) sampling methodologies and timetables, being composite samples and Moore swabs the less variable and more sensitive approaches, (iii) virus concentration methodologies that need to be feasible and practicable in simpler laboratories and (iv) detection methodologies that should tend to use faster and cost‐effective procedures. The efficiency of WW treatments and the use of WWs for SARS‐CoV‐2 variants detection are also addressed. Furthermore, we discuss the need for the development of common standardized protocols, although these must be versatile enough to comprise variations among target communities. WBE screening of risk populations will allow for the prediction of future outbreaks, thus alerting authorities to implement early action measurements.

Risk of heavy metals accumulation in soil and wheat grains with waste water irrigation under different NPK levels in alkaline calcareous soil.

A field study was conducted on the reuse of wastewater from Mardan city to evaluate its risk of contaminating soil and wheat grains at different NPK levels. Three irrigation sources i.e. waste water (WW), canal water (CW) and alternate waste + canal water (WW+CW) were applied to wheat (cv Atta Habib 2010) grown at 0, 50, 75 and 100% NPK levels of 120:90:60 kg N:P2O5:K2O ha-1 at Palatoo Research Farm, Amir Muhammad Khan Campus, Mardan during 2015.The results showed higher grain and biomass yields in WW irrigated plots as compared to CW at NPK levels up to 50% of recommending dose revealing supplementing nutrient requirements in deficient conditions. However, irrigation of WW at higher NPK levels especially at or beyond 75% of recommended dose tended to reduce the crop yield that could be associated with heavy metals toxicity and nutritional imbalances. The use of WW substantially increased AB-DTPA extractable Zn, Mn, Pb, Ni and Cd indicating a potential threat to soil contamination. Similarly, WW irrigated wheat had higher concentrations of these heavy metals as compared to CW which limits its use for production purposes without any remediation measures. The alternate use of CW and WW as revealed by its comparative lower contamination in soil and wheat than sole WW could be one of the possible solutions and may increase the time required for threshold soil contamination.

Nitrogen and Sulfur Co-Doped Graphene-Like Carbon from Industrial Dye Wastewater for Use as a High-Performance Supercapacitor Electrode.

Nitrogen and sulfur co‐doped graphene‐like carbon (N,S‐GLC) is successfully prepared in a one‐step hydrothermal reaction of glucose with industrial dye wastewater followed by chemical activation. The nitrogen and sulfur are sourced entirely from the industrial wastewater. The process not only provides an alternative way of treating industry wastewater, but also offers a green route for recovering energy from the waste in the form of chemicals. The resultant N,S‐GLC shows a good degree of graphitization, a high specific surface area (1734 m2 g−1), and moderate heteroatom doping (N: 2.1 at%, S: 0.7 at%). The N,S‐GLC electrode displays high specific capacitance of 275 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1 with a retention of 65.4% at 20 A g−1 in 6 m KOH. Moreover, the assembled symmetrical supercapacitor cell shows a capacitance of 38 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1, which is equivalent to an energy density of 6.4 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 275.0 W kg−1. This approach provides an alternative and sustainable way of fabricating heteroatom‐doped graphene‐like carbon materials for use in high‐performance supercapacitors.

Waste water irrigation in the regulation of soil properties, growth determinants, and heavy metal accumulation in different Brassica species.

To evaluate the impact of waste water (WW) irrigation, four Brassica species, namely B. campestris, B. juncea, B. napus, and B. nigra, were grown for 2years in the agricultural field. First-year experiment (2014-2015) was conducted with the comparative effect of WW and ground water (GW) under a uniform dose of NPK (N80P45K45, kgha-1). WW irrigation proved efficacious over GW to increase growth, physiological, and yield parameters. Increase in all parameters was due to the use of WW which leads to the improvement in the physico-chemical properties of soil as compared to resulted soil from GW application. Second-year experiment (2015-2016) therefore deals with WW irrigation only but under interaction with two levels of NPK fertilizers (N80P45K45 and N60P30K30, kgha-1). Results of this year revealed that maximum enhancement in growth, physiological, and yield parameters was observed at WW × N60P30K30 and the input of WW × N80P45K45 was not of benefit. WW × N60P30K30 treatment was beneficial also because, at this treatment level, the accumulation of Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni, and Cd in leaf and seed was comparatively lesser in amount than that of WW × N80P45K45. The study concluded even though the use of WW was applicable to save freshwater, enhance soil nutrient status, and make N, P, and K balance at their lower inputs, WW irrigation caused accumulation of heavy metals in all Brassica crops far above the safe limits during a quite longer irrigation time (70days and 105days after sowing (DAS)). However, WW was safe to use only up to 35DAS. Therefore, the study suggested that there should be regular monitoring of heavy metal concentrations in irrigation water as well as in various crop vegetables.

Effects of treated wastewater irrigation on the establishment of young grapevines

Irrigation with treated wastewater could produce excessive accumulations within the plant and soil, negatively affecting the yield and production quality. In addition, the presence of biological and chemical contaminants could harm the agricultural environment, as well as the health of farmers and consumers. During this work, the suitability of secondary and tertiary treated wastewater for use in young grapevines was evaluated by studying the effect of the wastewater irrigation on the soil-plant system, crop yield, fruit quality and the presence of inorganic chemical contamination (salts, elements and heavy metals), organic chemical contamination (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and microbial contamination (E. coli, total coliforms). The results show that tertiary treated wastewater had positive impact on plant growth and yield while secondary treated wastewater had negative impact on fruit safety in comparison with tap water. Sodium levels in soils irrigated with treated wastewater increased at the end of the irrigation period while decreased during the wet season. The total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations in the soils ranged from 363 μg/kg to 374 μg/kg at the end of the experiment for all irrigation treatments applied. The use of tertiary treated wastewater was recommended for the irrigation of young grapevines as an alternative water source secured protection of environment, plant health and fruit quality.

Disinfection of dairy wastewater effluent through solar photocatalysis processes

Due to the strict regulations and reuse policies that govern wastewater's use as an irrigation water resource for agricultural purposes, especially in dry climates, optimization of the disinfection process is of the utmost importance. The effects of solar radiation along with Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles applied to optimization of the photolysis and photocatalysis processes for inactivating heterotrophic bacteria were investigated. Temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen fluctuations in the dairy wastewater effluent treated by activated sludge were examined. In addition, different dosages of TiO2 were tested in the solar photocatalysis (ph-C S) and concentrated solar photocatalysis (ph-C CS) processes. The results show that the disinfection efficiencies of the solar photolysis (ph-L S) and concentrated solar photolysis (ph-L CS) processes after 30 min were about 10.5% and 68.9%, respectively, and that the ph-C S and ph-C CS processes inactivated 41% and 97% of the heterotrophic bacteria after 30 min, respectively. The pH variation in these processes was negligible. Using the ph-L CS and ph-C CS processes, the synergistic effect between the optical and thermal inactivation caused complete disinfection after three hours. However, disinfection was faster in the ph-C CS process than in the ph-L CS process. Significant correlations were found between the disinfection efficiency and the variation of the dissolved oxygen concentration in the ph-C S and ph-C CS processes, while the correlations between the disinfection efficiency and temperature variation were not significant in the ph-L S and ph-C S processes. Moreover, the oxygen consumption rate was greatest (3.2 mg·L−1) in the ph-C CS process. Hence, it could be concluded that the ph-C CS process is an efficient photocatalysis process for disinfection of dairy wastewater effluent.

A high-throughput solid-phase microextraction and post-loop mixing large volume injection method for water samples

This article presents a novel approach for the analysis of 13 drugs in wastewater for use in wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) studies. Sample preparation remains one of the principal bottlenecks in modern high-throughput analysis by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The proposed methodology is based on the micro-extraction of small volumes (1 ml) of wastewater using a HLB 96-well microplate and both large volume injection (LVI) and post-loop mixing injection (PLM). With this configuration, the limits of quantification (LOQ) were below the reported environmental concentrations of the target compounds in wastewater. Furthermore, both the complexity of collecting, transporting and storing the wastewater sample, sample preparation time, cost and amount of solvent used are all diminished, enhancing the suitability of this methodology for future WBE studies. A new workflow is also proposed in order to create a virtual specimen library bank for WBE by using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). The method was validated and the limits of quantification were between 0.2 and 6.3 ng L−1. The relative standard deviations (RSD) for a standard mixture at 200 ng L−1 (n = 6) was between 3.4 and 14.4% while the recoveries for the 13 drug target residues (DTR) were between 92 and 110%. The developed and validated method was finally successfully applied to 10 wastewater samples collected from Oslo, Norway.

Recycling of biodiesel fuel wastewater for use as a liquid fertilizer for hydroponics

Wastewater is discharged during washing processes in the production of biodiesel fuel (BDF) using alkaline catalysts. It can be recycled as a liquid fertilizer for hydroponics by adding essential components for plant growth. The effects of the liquid fertilizer on plant growth were investigated. Liquid fertilizer containing a smaller amount of the BDF wastewater had a similar effect on plant growth as the standard nutrient solutions. This result reveals that BDF wastewater can be recycled for use as a liquid fertilizer for hydroponics. However, fertilizer with a larger amount of the BDF wastewater showed poor and varied plant growth due to the growth of microorganisms in the contaminated wastewater. Hence, when BDF wastewater becomes contaminated during storage, sterilization is necessary to recycle it as a liquid fertilizer. Moreover, contamination during storage should be avoided for successful recycling.

Recovery of nutrients from swine wastewater using ultrafiltration: Applications for microalgae cultivation in photobioreactors

The large-scale production of microalgae poses a number of challenges, including a costly fertilizer demand. While wastewater provides a concentrated source of nutrients, the presence of biological contaminants and the expense of heat treatment are challenging for large-scale production. The goal of this study was to use ultrafiltration to purify wastewater for use in the cultivation of microalgae. Swine waste was filtered, and the resulting permeate was utilized in a Porphyridium cruentum culture. Fluxes remained relatively constant during operation, and the complete rejection of bacteria was observed. The permeate contained high concentrations of total nitrogen (695.6mgL−1) and total phosphorus (69.1mgL−1). Higher biomass productivity and lipid contents were observed in the microalgae cultivated in the waste medium compared to that of a control medium. This suggests that, by using ultrafiltration as an alternative to heat treatment, agricultural wastewaters could be utilized as a nutrient source for microalgae.

Optimisation of bioflocculant production by a biofilm forming microorganism from poultry slaughterhouse wastewater for use in poultry wastewater treatment.

Poultry slaughterhouse wastewater contains nutrients that are sufficient for microbial growth; moreover, the wastewater has microorganisms which can be harnessed to perform specific functions. Additionally, these microorganisms can grow either in planktonic (free floating) mode or sessile (attached) mode. This study focused on the optimisation of bioflocculant production by quantifying flocculation activity, determined using kaolin clay (4 g/L), by isolates prevalent in poultry slaughterhouse wastewater. Subsequent to their identification and characterisation, six bacterial strains were initially isolated from the poultry wastewater. Although all the isolated microorganisms produced bioflocculants under different conditions, i.e. pH and temperature, the strain that produced bioflocculants with a higher flocculation activity was isolate BF-3, a Comamonas sp., achieving a flocculation activity of 93.8% at 32.9 °C and pH 6.5. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis of the bioflocculant of the isolate, showed the presence of hydroxyl, carboxyl, alkane and amine functional groups, an indication that the bioflocculant was a protein constituent.

Production of Concrete Blocks Using Treated Effluent for Activated Sludge and Stabilization Lagoons

The estimated consumption of water is of 9,000 L on production of about 12,000 concrete blocks with 14x19x39 cm, approximately 60 m³ of concrete. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of treated effluent for two different biological STS - Sewage Treatment Stations - (activated sludge and stabilization lagoons) in the production of hollow blocks of simple concrete compared with the use of groundwater. To this were analyzed the characteristics of groundwater and wastewater for use in the production of the blocks and was made a comparative analysis, in accordance with the technical standard ABNT NBR 6136, of physical and mechanical characteristics (dimensional, absorbing, compression) obtained in blocks manufactured with groundwater and wastewater. Images were also captured by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) of all samples of blocks produced and compared to the results of mechanical properties obtained. It was observed that both physical and mechanical characteristics of the blocks manufactured with the treated effluents meet completely the requirements established by this technical standard. The better results for blocks manufactured were using groundwater, which can enable the reuse of water from the treated effluent in the manufacture of hollow concrete blocks to masonry.
