Recovery of Value-Added Chemicals from Hazardous Waste Pickle Liquor through Application of Full-Scale Fluidized Bed Reactor System

This paper represents the application of full-scale fluidized bed technology with recourse to recovery of value-added chemicals from the spent liquor generated from steel pickling processes in the steel manufacturing industry, achieving Zero Effluent Discharge (ZED). Optimization of the process variables of a full-scale fluidized bed reactor for the recovery of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and iron oxide (Fe2O3) are discussed.

A Study on The Fabrication of Ultra Fine Magnetite Particles and Magnetic Fluid from the Waste Pickling Liquor of Steel

Ultra fine magnetite particles, with the mean particle size of 75A, were produced at pH 12 after adjusting the mole ratio of Fe2+/Fe3+ to 0.5 by partial oxidation of the waste pickling liquor of steel. After double adsorption of oleic acid ion and dodecyl benzene sulfonate (D. B. S) ion on the surface of magnetite particles, magnetite hydrophilic magnetic fluid was produced by dispersing the magnetite particles in ethylene glycol solution. The ethylene glycol based magnetic fluid enhanced the capability of oil seals. The life span of the sealing apparatus composed of mild steel components was remarkably extended due to the high corrosion resistance of ethylene glycol.

Treatment of a vanadium-containing effluent by adsorption/coprecipitation with iron oxyhydroxide

Competitive adsorption experiments showed that vanadate is slightly more strongly adsorbed than phosphate on iron oxyhydroxide. Spent corrosion inhibitor containing vanadate (10 −4 M) and phosphate (10 −2 M) was treated by selectively precipitating the phosphate as apatite by addition of lime. The vanadate was then coprecipitated by addition of waste pickle liquor (FeCl 2(aq)) plus further lime, with aeration to convert Fe(II) to Fe(III). Residual vanadate was <2 × 10 −6 M and phosphate <1.6 × 10 −4 M. Adsorption of vanadate on apatite was negligible.

Preliminary study of treatment of sulphuric pickling water waste from steelmaking by bio-oxidation with Thiobacillus ferrooxidans

This report looks at the laboratory-scale recovery of iron oxides (alpha Fe2O3 type) through bio-oxidation with Thiobacillus ferrooxidans of the ferrous sulphate contained in steel industry sulphuric pickling liquors. This is done by calcining iron sulphates and iron and ammonium sulphates obtained from the crystallization of the oxidized solution. The products of the bacterial reaction and the iron oxides are then studied according to calcination temperature. The process carried out produced 50 kg of alpha Fe2O3 per m3 of waste pickling liquor at 700 degrees C with 99.8% weight iron recovery.

Purification of roasted iron oxide product from waste pickling liquor by glass-ceramic method.

The experiment has been carried out for the purification of α-Fe2O3 by the glass-ceramic method. After melting the roasted product of the waste pickling liquor with Na2O-B2O3 fluxes having the Na2O/B2O3 (mole ratio)=1/2-1/5, the glass samples obtained by rapid quenching crystallized at temperatures ranging from 550 to 1 000°C for 55 s to 24 h. The separation of the precipitated α-Fe2O3 from the flux was made by wet chemical treatment with water and dilute HCl solution, after which high purity and fine α-Fe2O3 crystals were obtained. The impurity contents, Fe yield, and crystal shape and size have been investigated as functions of crystalization time, temperature and flux compositions. In the experiment that the crystallized fine α-Fe2O3 particles were dissolved by dilute HCl solution in stepwise manner, the analysis of impurities in each stage shows that the contents of Si, Na, B, Ca and Al were enriched on the crystal surface.

Iron Powder from Iron Oxide Produced by Waste Pickling Liquor Treatment

Iron powders were made from iron oxides by the method of reduction with coke and subsequently with hydrogen. These iron oxides were obtained as a by-product from waste pickling liquor in steel industry. Various properties of these iron powders were tested and measured. The characteristics obtained were as follows:1) Iron powders made from fine oxide particles had low apparent density and irregular shapes compared with those from ore and mill-scale.2) Compressibility was not so good, but compactibility was excellent. Mechanical strength of green compacts was very high, and the rattler value was very small.3) The mechanical strength of these sintered compacts was high in comparison with commercial reduced iron powders and the elongation was especially high at high sintered density.4) The lower is the hydrogen loss of iron powders, the higher both green and sintered densities were obtained then dimensional change (shrinkage) was small and the elongation was much improved.It was found that these iron powders produced by reduction of iron oxides, which were made as a byproduct from waste pickling liquor, had many interesting properties, especially in compactibility and mechanical strength of both green and sintered compacts.

Waste Pickle Liquor. Ferrous Sulfate-Sulfuric Acid-Water

D a t a for the ternary system ferrous sulfatesulfuric acid-water a r e presented for Oo, 27O, 40°, 60°, and looo C. Such data a r e helpful in solving the problem of recovery and utilization of waste pickle liquor. E r r o r s in existing data for binary and ternary systems a r e a lso discussed. The steel industry has worked assiduously to solve the technical problem of recovery and utilization of waste pickle liquor. Numerous processes have been prcJposed (8, 10, 11, 13, 16,23,24). Many of these call for the separation by crystallization of ferrous sulfate in various hydrated forms from the waste solution. To have complete information for engineering calculations, data for the system ferrous sulfate-sulfuric acid-water should be available over the complete range of sulfuric acid concentrations and from Oo to looo C. This paper presents such solubility data. An enthalpy-concentration diagram for the system ferrous sulfate-water has previously been prepared (20). The amount of waste pickle liquor produced annually i s not known definitely, Hoak (12) estimates it to be in excess of 600 million gallons, and Hodge (14) estimates it from 500 to 800 million gallons. The concentrations vary with pickling processes; typical analyses a r e given by Hodge. In modern continuous s t r ip picklers a typical analysis would be 7% sulfuric acid, 15% ferrous sulfate, and 78% water. Bramer and Coull ( 5 ) estimate nearly a billion gallons of waste pickle liquor annually with an average composition of 5% sulfuric acid and 15% ferrous sulfate.
