The efficiency analysis of organic and conventional olive farms: Case of Turkey

This paper investigates technical and economically efficiency of 62 organic and 62 conventional olive producing farms in Turkey. According to the study results; by using the CRS model which is input and output-oriented, the average technical efficiency of organic olive farms is 67.68%, the average technical efficiency of conventional olive farms is 47.93%. The technical efficiency of the output-oriented VRS model is 74.78%, and the technical efficiency of the input-oriented VRS model is 93.46%. Also, considering the same model, the average efficiency of the conventional olive farms in the input and output are 59.58% and 94.97%, respectively. Therefore, according to the Data Envelopment Analysis, the technical efficiency in conventional olive farms is less than in the organic ones. When the farms have been evaluated one by one in the light of the total potential improvement values, inputs and outputs, improvement is needed in all values.

Efficiency Measurement of Major Container Terminals in Asia

Due to the growth of container traffic and port competition, ports have increasingly been under pressure to improve their efficiency in port operation and port management for competitive edge. The purpose of this study is to compare the technical efficiency among major container terminals in China, Korea and Singapore using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). This paper analyses the returns-to-scale using the output orientation of VRS and CRS model. The benefits of this study examining the relative performance of container terminals will enable container terminal operating companies or port policy makers in those countries to identify current slacks and to set up a proper port management and operation plan to improve their productivity.

Technical efficiency of joint public-private venture railways

The purpose of this paper is to measure technical efficiencies and scale economies in joint public-private venture railways and small and medium-sized private sector railways and to test the hypothesis that two groups (Group 1 is joint public-private venture railways and Group 2 is small and medium-sized private sector railways.) belong to the same population. Joint public-private venture railways mean the railway companies that are funded by local governments and private companies. We use data envelopment analysis (DEA) to measure technical efficiencies and scale economies. We apply the Mann-Whitney test to test the hypothesis. We derive the following results:1. The mean efficiencies of CRS model obtained from pooling data, Group 1, and Group 2 are 55%, 52%, 58% respectively. The mean efficiencies of VRS model obtained from pooling data, Group 1, and Group 2 are 72%, 68%, 75% respectively.2. The results obtained from DEA indicate increasing returns to scale in many railway companies.3. The null hypothesis that the efficiencies of Group 1 and Group 2 have the same distribution is accepted.
