Active control of vortex-induced vibration of a circular cylinder using machine learning

We demonstrate the use of high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics simulations in machine-learning based active flow control. More specifically, for the first time, we adopt the genetic programming (GP) to select explicit control laws, in a data-driven and unsupervised manner, for the suppression of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a circular cylinder in a low-Reynolds-number flow (Re = 100), using blowing/suction at fixed locations. A cost function that balances both VIV suppression and energy consumption for the control is carefully chosen according to the knowledge obtained from pure blowing/suction open-loop controls. By implementing reasonable constraints to VIV amplitude and actuation strength during the GP evolution, the GP-selected best ten control laws all point to suction-type actuation. The best control law suggests that the suction strength should be nonzero when the cylinder is at its equilibrium position and should increase nonlinearly with the cylinder’s transverse displacement. Applying this control law suppresses 94.2% of the VIV amplitude and achieves 21.4% better overall performance than the best open-loop controls. Furthermore, it is found that the GP-selected control law is robust, being effective in flows ranging from Re = 100 to 400. On the contrary, although the P-control can achieve similar performance as the GP-selected control at Re = 100, it deteriorates in higher Reynolds number flows. Although for demonstration purpose the chosen control problem is relatively simple, the training experience and insights obtained from this study can shed some light on future GP-based control of more complicated problems.

Experimental investigation on multi-mode vortex-induced vibration control of stay cable installed with pounding tuned mass dampers

In this paper, pounding tuned mass dampers (PTMDs) were designed to mitigate the multi-mode vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of stay cable utilizing the viscous-elastic material\'s energy-dissipated ability. The PTMD device consists of a cantilever metal rod beam, a metal mass block and a specially designed damping element covered with viscous-elastic material layer. Wind-tunnel experiment on VIV of stay cable model was set up to validate the effectiveness of the PTMD on multi-mode VIV mitigation of stay cable. By analyzing and comparing testing results of all testing cases, it could be verified that the PTMD with viscous-elastic pounding boundary can obviously mitigate the VIV amplitude of the stay cable. Moreover, the installed location and the design parameters of the PTMD device based on the controlled modes of the primary stay cable, would have a certain extent suppression on the other modal vibration of the stay cable, which means that the designed PTMDs are effective among a large band of frequency for the multi-mode VIV control of the stay cable.

Control of vortex-induced vibration of a circular cylinder using a pair of air jets at low Reynolds number

A numerical investigation was conducted to assess the effectiveness of an active control method using a pair of air jets positioned at the two shoulders of a circular cylinder for vortex-induced vibration (VIV) suppression at a low Reynolds number of 100. Unlike the same-phase jet-control technique, air injection leads to gas-liquid two-phase flow in the wake of cylinder. The ejected air is wrapped by the shear layer, and an air vortex is generated after the curled jet flow attains a certain length, corresponding to the consumption of ejecting energy. Then, air bubbles are formed and convected downstream with the shed vortices. The air vortices and bubbles interrupt the development of boundary layer and naturally shedding vortices, effectively delaying the vortex formation and hence the VIV suppression. The migration of air bubbles in the flow wake are categorized into two modes. One is bubbles coinciding with vortices and convecting downstream with them. The other is bubbles deviating from the center of vortices but continually interrupting the vortices by drawing the ambient vorticity-carrying fluid. The vibration control becomes more effective with the increase of momentum coefficient. After implementing air-jet control at Ujet/Uin = 2, more than 60% reduction in transverse amplitude is achieved.

Using tuned mass damper inerter to mitigate vortex-induced vibration of long-span bridges: Analytical study

The undesirable vortex-induced vibration (VIV) may seriously influence the fatigue life and serviceability of bridge structures. It is important to take countermeasures to suppress the adverse VIV of long-span bridges. In the present study, a novel inerter-based system, namely the tuned mass damper inerter (TMDI), is proposed to control the VIV of the main deck of long-span bridges. In this system, an inerter device, which is able to transform the linear motion into the high-speed rotational motion and thus significantly amplifies the physical mass of the system, is incorporated into the conventional tuned mass damper (TMD) system to further improve the performance of TMD. An applicable layout of the TMDI inside the bridge deck is introduced and the governing equations of the structure-TMDI system subjected to VIV are established. The optimization of the TMDI parameters with the consideration of nonlinear aeroelastic effect is derived. The control performance and robustness of the proposed system are investigated through an analytical case study in both the time and frequency domains. It is observed that the TMDI system can obviously reduce the VIV responses of the bridge deck. Moreover, compared to the conventional TMD system, the static stretching of the spring due to gravity and the oscillation amplitude of the mass block in the TMDI system are significantly reduced. These properties make the proposed TMDI system an attractive alternative for the VIV control of long-span bridges.

Passive control of vortex-induced vibration by spanwise grooves

The objective of this numerical study is to investigate the effect of spanwise grooves on the suppression of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) and the reduction of drag force. For this purpose, we consider a standard configuration of the elastically mounted circular cylinder, which is free to vibrate in both streamwise and transverse directions with identical natural frequency. We introduce a novel staggered groove configuration whose geometry is especially designed by offsetting the cross-sectional portion of the cylinder continuously along the spanwise direction. We assess the characteristic VIV responses of the proposed staggered groove configuration against the helical surface grooves for the identical dimensions and physical conditions. The staggered and helical groove configurations differ only in their arrangement of cross-section geometry along the spanwise direction. Three-dimensional coupled fluid–structure simulations are conducted at low mass and damping values with moderate Reynolds number of Re=4800. The effective width and the depth of surface grooves are determined to characterize the size effects for the assessment of staggered and helical groove configurations. Results show that the staggered groove configuration is effective in suppressing VIV, wherein the net reductions of 37% in the peak transverse amplitude and about 25% in the mean drag coefficient are observed in comparison to the plain cylinder counterpart. Staggered groove configuration produces three dominant effects by introducing a continuous jump in the cross-sectional geometry along the spanwise direction: (i) reduction of the spanwise correlation, (ii) enhancement of the three-dimensional effects in the near-wake flow, and (iii) broadening of the frequency spectra of fluid forces. As a result of these physical effects, the transfer of energy from the surrounding fluid flow to the vibrating grooved-cylinder system is reduced as compared to its plain cylinder counterpart. Owing to the simplicity of mechanical design and the ease of installation, the proposed passive control concept has a potential application to deepwater marine risers and tall structures in a wind environment.

The Numerical Investigation of Optical Error Compensation for Dynamic Target by FSM in Photoelectric Mast

In this paper, firstly, based on the basic control equations of fluid mechanics, the effects of the fluid on force and vortex induced vibration around underwater submarine model are studied and discussed, employing the finite volume method by hierarchy grids. Secondly, the structural characteristics, transfer functions and control strategies of Steering Mirror Fast (FSM) are analyzed and obtained. The disturbance of moment also has been resolved to optical axis coordinate system. Finally, take the optical model of submarine as the research background, the effects of the FSM on the stability improvement of photoelectric tracking system are discussed. The results show that the disturbance of submarine moments mainly origin from the vortex induced vibration. The dynamic target tracking error could be suppressed. This research explores vortex induced vibration control in optical filter. Therefore, it holds certain scientific significance and practical value.

Vibration control of vortex-induced vibrations of a bridge deck by a single-side pounding tuned mass damper

This paper proposes a new method to mitigate vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs) of a bridge deck using a single-side pounding tuned mass damper (SS-PTMD). The SS-PTMD is a passive control device and comprises an undamped tuned mass with a pounding boundary covered with viscoelastic (VE) materials layer. A nonlinear force model for describing impact behavior of VE materials is used to simulate the response of a single degree of freedom (SDOF) system controlled by a SS-PTMD. The free pounding experiments are performed to determine the model parameters of impact force and validate the simulation method. The optimal design of SS-PTMD for SDOF system subjected to sinusoidal excitation is carried out by numerical optimization, and the optimized SS-PTMD is applied to control the vertical VIVs of a bridge deck. The control performance is experimentally examined by elastically mounted section model tests in wind tunnel. In addition, the classical wake oscillator model is used to predict the behavior of the coupled fluid-structure system under VIV and explore the control performance of the SS-PTMD. The experimental results show that the maximum response of the bridge deck model was reduced by 94% when a SS-PTMD with mass ratio of 2% was applied. It is also shown that nonlinearity in vortex shedding forces has little influence on control performance of SS-PTMD optimized under sinusoidal excitation.

Vortex-induced vibrations of a circular cylinder with a pair of control rods of varying size

We present an experimental study on the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a low mass-damping one-degree-of-freedom circular cylinder subject to uniform cross-flow, with pairs of control rods of varying size located in its wake. Two particular locations for control rods, selected according to recent experimental maps of VIV sensitivity to localized perturbations, have been tested for increasing control rod diameters, d. Important amplitude reductions are observed for all arrangements investigated, with nearly total suppression of oscillations (up to 90%) for control rods of d = 0.4D, where D is the diameter of the main cylinder. Force measurements have been used to describe the nature of changes observed in the wake and the mechanisms behind the VIV control. In general, the placement of control rod pairs in the near wake leads to an important weakening of the lift coefficient and alters substantially the phase between transverse force and cylinder displacement. Moreover, it is shown that, for some particular arrangements, attenuation of VIV is obtained along with a drag reduction of approximately 60% at the upper branch of amplitude response, rendering the present strategy an interesting and practical solution for VIV control when several cylinders need to be installed together.

Semi-Active Vortex Induced Vibration Control of an Elastic Elliptical Cylinder with Energy Regeneration Capability

The concept of energy-regenerative damping is adopted in semi-active vortex-induced vibration (VIV) suppression of an elastically supported inclined impenetrable elliptical cylinder modeled as a two degree-of-freedom (DOF) system in laminar cross-flow at low Reynolds numbers (Re = 210). It is based on the intelligent (model free) adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control (AFSMC) strategy in conjunction with switch-based energy regenerating circuit of a tunable electromagnetic (EM) damper. The semi-active damper is linked to the plant model in a multi-field co-simulation framework via MATLAB/Simulink coupled with a user defined function in a CFD package. The AFSM controller initially calculates the desired transverse control force for suppression of the cylinder VIV. Consequently, by smart adjustment of the variable circuit load resistance, the current flow through EM damper circuit is adaptively modulated in such a way that the damping force continually tracks its active counterpart in a semi-active manner. Furthermore, when the damper is operating in the regeneration mode, the mechanical vibration energy that is traditionally dissipated as heat in conventional viscous dampers will be stored as electric charge in a capacitor. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the regenerative semi-active EM-based VIV control system can effectively suppress the cylinder motion while recovering a certain portion of mechanical vibration energy through the cooperative action of two distinct operation modes of the EM damper. Unlike conventional active control systems, the proposed system does not require a large external power supply, and at least part of the required power may be provided by the recovered energy.

Active closed-loop vortex-induced vibration control of an elastically mounted circular cylinder at low Reynolds number using feedback rotary oscillations

An active rotary oscillation feedback control methodology is adopted to suppress the flow-induced transverse vibration (VIV) of an elastically supported impenetrable circular cylinder in a uniform low Reynolds number flow (\(\textit{Re} = 100\)). The coupled fluid–structure interaction is replicated by applying the moving mesh technique via a user-defined function (UDF) in the main code of a commercial CFD solver. The closed-loop VIV control action is realized by active forced rotational oscillations of the circular cylinder about its axis based on the feedback signal of the lift coefficient. This prevents the occurrence of resonance by shifting the vortex shedding frequency away from the natural oscillator frequency. Three different active closed-loop proportional controllers are implemented, and their superior performance in cylinder VIV suppression is demonstrated against that of a representative open-loop control system with pre-specified rotational oscillations. It is shown that, in comparison with the open-loop system, the selected closed-loop controller achieves a better cylinder VIV response suppression with a much lower control effort along with considerable reductions in the associated lift/drag coefficients. Furthermore, the closed-loop controller is very effective in a wide range of reduced velocities and does not need to find the “lock-on” forcing frequency for proper de-synchronization. Moreover, the imposed feedback cylinder rotary oscillation is found to considerably affect the spatial characteristics of the wake flow structure by changing the 2S-Coalescent wake pattern (C-2S-mode) of an uncontrolled cylinder into the classical von Karman vortex street (2S-mode), very similar to that of a stationary obstacle. Lastly, when the system is in the fully developed condition, the proportional controller can be complemented by a fuzzy logic inference system for intelligent tuning of gain parameter in order to suppress the impulsive upsurge observed in the cylinder force coefficients of the proportional controller at the start of the control action.

Control of vortex-induced vibration using a pair of synthetic jets: Influence of active lock-on

While conventional vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of bluff bodies is suppressed through reducing the strength of asymmetric vortex shedding, it can also be mitigated by shifting the vortex shedding frequency away from the natural frequency of the body structures using active lock-on. Recently Du and Sun [“Suppression of vortex-induced vibration using the rotary oscillation of a cylinder,” Phys. Fluids 27, 023603 (2015)] utilized periodical rotation to induce the lock-on of the frequency of vortex shedding from a transversely vibrating cylinder to the rotation frequency and demonstrated successful VIV suppression. However, questions were raised from this investigation: Does the occurrence of active lock-on always suppress VIV? If not, how to ensure the appropriate usage of active lock-on for VIV suppression? To address these research questions, a numerical investigation is conducted on the active VIV control of a circular cylinder using a pair of synthetic jets (SJs) at a low Reynolds number of 100. The SJ pair operates with various phase differences over a wide frequency range so that the influence of various lock-on can be investigated. It is found that the VIV control can be affected not only by the occurrence of the primary lock-on but also by the occurrence of other lock-on such as secondary and tertiary lock-on. The occurrence of lock-on does not always result in successful VIV suppression. Sometimes it even causes the augmentation of VIV. Compared to the VIV suppression using the conventional vortex-strength-reduction method, the control by the means of active lock-on seems less effective.

Investigations on the Effects of Vortex-Induced Vibration with Different Distributions of Lorentz Forces

The control of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) in shear flow with different distributions of Lorentz force is numerically investigated based on the stream function–vorticity equations in the exponential-polar coordinates exerted on moving cylinder for Re = 150. The cylinder motion equation coupled with the fluid, including the mathematical expressions of the lift force coefficient C l , is derived. The initial and boundary conditions as well as the hydrodynamic forces on the surface of cylinder are also formulated. The Lorentz force applied to suppress the VIV has no relationship with the flow field, and involves two categories, i.e., the field Lorentz force and the wall Lorentz force. With the application of symmetrical Lorentz forces, the symmetric field Lorentz force can amplify the drag, suppress the flow separation, decrease the lift fluctuation, and then suppress the VIV while the wall Lorentz force decreases the drag only. With the application of asymmetrical Lorentz forces, besides the above-mentioned effects, the field Lorentz force can increase additional lift induced by shear flow, whereas the wall Lorentz force can counteract the additional lift, which is dominated on the total effect.

Investigation and Control of VIVs with Multi-Lock-in Regions on Wide Flat Box Girders

On the preliminary designing of a wide flat box girder with the slenderness ratio 12, vertical and torsional vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) are observed in wind tunnel tests. More than one lock-in region, which are defined as“multi-lock-in regions,”are recorded. Therefore, suspicions should be aroused regarding the viewpoint that wide box girders are aerodynamic friendly. As the three nascent vortexes originating at the pedestrian guardrails and inspection rails shed to near-wake through different pathways with different frequencies, the mechanisms of VIVs and multi-lock-in regions are analyzed to be determined by the inappropriate subsidiary structures. A hybrid method combiningLarge Eddy Simulation(LES) with experimental results is introduced to study the flow-structure interactions (FSI) when undergoing VIVs; the vortex mode of torsional VIV on wide flat box girders is defined as “4/2S,” which is different from any other known ones. Based on the mechanism of VIV, a new approach by increasing ventilation rate of the pedestrian guardrails is proved to be effective in suppressing vertical and torsional VIVs, and it is more feasible than other control schemes. Then, the control mechanisms are deeper investigated by analyzing the evolution of vortex mode and FSI using Hybrid-LES method.

Numerical evaluation of passive control of VIV by small control rods

Flow past a circular cylinder with multiple small control rods is studied by numerical simulation for ReD ranging from 1161.3 to 6387.1. The Reynolds-Averaged-Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations and shear stress transport (SST) k−ω turbulence model are used to calculate the vortex field, while a fourth-order Runge–Kutta method is employed for evaluating the structure dynamics of the cylinder group. Comparisons with experimental results demonstrate the validation of this method. This study is concerned with the vortex induced vibration (VIV) suppression efficacy of small control rods placed around a main cylinder. The effects of control rod number, diameter ratio, spacing ratio and Reynolds number on the hydrodynamics and vibration responses of the main cylinder are investigated. The reduced percents of in-line and cross-flow amplitudes and the increased percents of the whole cross-sectional area of cylinders and the drag coefficient are used to give a comprehensive evaluation. Results of simulation indicate that placing small rods with appropriate number at appropriate locations can achieve good suppression effectiveness at a wide range of Reynolds number. The numerical result for the case with nine control rods, diameter ratio of 0.15 and spacing ratio of 0.6 shows the best suppression effect among the cases investigated in this study.

Synergetic analysis and possible control of vortex-induced vibrations in a fluid-conveying steel catenary riser

This work aimed to demonstrate possibilities for both active and passive control of the vortex-induced vibration and fatigue life of steel catenary risers via an analysis of the self-organization and evolution of the structural vibration based on synergetic theory. An analysis of the complex interrelated and synergistic relationship between the order parameter and the fast variable was performed, and the master equation of the nodal displacements was established as the order parameter for the evolution of the riser’s structural vibration. Passive control methods include modifying the structure’s elastic modulus, the internal fluid velocity, the top tension and the structural damping ratio, while an active control involves adjusting the external flow rate. Optimized parameters were obtained by analyzing the non-steady state solution of the master equation. The results show that the fatigue life greatly increases as the riser’s elastic modulus decreases. In contrast, the fatigue life decreases with an increase of the internal fluid velocity. With an increase of the top tension, the vibration amplitudes and the number of modes may decrease, resulting in fewer bending stress cycles and a longer fatigue life. Furthermore, the structural damping ratio should be as large as possible. Finally, an active and passive control of the riser structure’s response to vortex-induced vibration and its fatigue life can be achieved by carefully modifying the parameters mentioned above. The results may provide a theoretical framework for engineering practice concerning the design and control of steel catenary riser structures which are affected by vortex-induced vibration.

Active vortex-induced vibration control of a circular cylinder at low Reynolds numbers using an adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller

An adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control (AFSMC) scheme is applied to actively suppress the two-dimensional vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) of an elastically mounted circular cylinder, free to move in in-line and cross-flow directions. Laminar flow regime at Re=90, low non-dimensional mass with equal natural frequencies in both directions, and zero structural damping coefficients, are considered. The natural oscillator frequency is matched with the vortex shedding frequency of a stationary cylinder at Re=100. The strongly coupled unsteady fluid/cylinder interactions are captured by implementing the moving mesh technology through integration of an in-house developed User Define Function (UDF) into the main code of the commercial CFD solver Fluent. The AFSMC approach comprises of a fuzzy system designed to mimic an ideal sliding-mode controller, and a robust controller intended to compensate for the difference between the fuzzy controller and the ideal one. The fuzzy system parameters as well as the uncertainty bound of the robust controller are adaptively tuned online. A collaborative simulation scheme is realized by coupling the control model implemented in Matlab/Simulink to the plant model constructed in Fluent, aiming at determination of the transverse control force required for complete suppression of the cylinder streamwise and cross-flow oscillations. The simulation results demonstrate the high performance and effectiveness of the adopted control algorithm in attenuating the 2D-VIV of the elastic cylinder over a certain flow velocity range. Also, the enhanced transient performance of the AFSM control strategy in comparison with a conventional PID control law is demonstrated. Furthermore, the effect of control action on the time evolution of vortex shedding from the cylinder is discussed. In particular, it is observed that the coalesced vortices in the far wake region of the uncontrolled cylinder, featuring the C(2S)-type vortex shedding characteristic mode, are ultimately forced to switch to the classical von Kármán vortex street of 2S-type mode, displaying wake vortices of moderately weaker strengths very similar to those of the stationary cylinder. Lastly, robustness of AFSMC is verified against relatively large structural uncertainties as well as with respect to a moderate deviation in the uniform inlet flow velocity.

Numerical study of the suppression mechanism of vortex-induced vibration by symmetric Lorentz forces

In this paper, the electro-magnetic control of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a circular cylinder is investigated numerically based on the stream function–vorticity equations in the exponential–polar coordinates attached on the moving cylinder for Re=150. The effects of the instantaneous wake geometries and the corresponding cylinder motion on the hydrodynamic forces for one entire period of vortex shedding are discussed using a drag–lift phase diagram. The drag–lift diagram is composed of the upper and lower closed curves due to the contributions of the vortex shedding but is magnified, translated and turned under the action of the cylinder motion. The Lorentz force for controlling the vibration cylinder is classified into the field Lorentz force and the wall Lorentz force. The symmetric field Lorentz force will symmetrize the flow passing over the cylinder and decreases the lift oscillation, which, in turn, suppresses the VIV, whereas the wall Lorentz force has no effect on the lift. The cylinder vibration increases as the work performed by the lift dominates the energy transfer. Otherwise, the cylinder vibration decreases. If the net transferred energy per motion is equal to zero, the cylinder will vibrate steadily or be fixed.

Effects of a non-linear energy sink (NES) on vortex-induced vibrations of a circular cylinder

We investigate in detail the passive control of vortex-induced vibrations of a freely oscillating circular cylinder using a non-linear energy sink consisting of a secondary system having linear damping and an essential non-linear cubic stiffness. The loads on the cylinder are calculated using a direct numerical simulation of the incompressible flow over the cylinder using a parallel computational fluid dynamics code. A strongly coupled fluid structure control numerical model is used to determine the responses of the cylinder and the sink as well as the flow. We vary the sink parameters (mass and damping) and determine their effects on the response of the coupled system. We find multiple stable responses of the coupled system for different mass ratios and damping coefficient of the sink, depending on the initial conditions.

Suppression of vortex-induced vibration of a circular cylinder using suction-based flow control

In the present study, a flow control method is employed to mitigate vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a circular cylinder by using a suction flow method. The VIV of a circular cylinder was first reproduced in a wind tunnel by using a spring–mass system. The time evolution of the cylinder oscillation and the time histograms of the surface pressures of 119 taps in four sections of the circular cylinder model were measured during the wind tunnel experiments. Four steady suction flow rates were used to investigate the effectiveness of the suction control method to suppress VIV of the circular cylinder. The vibration responses, the mean and fluctuating pressure coefficients, and the resultant aerodynamic force coefficients of the circular cylinder under the suction flow control are analyzed. The measurement results indicate clearly that the steady suction flow control method exhibits excellent control effectiveness and can distinctly suppress the VIV by dramatically reducing the amplitudes of cylinder vibrations, fluctuating pressure coefficients and lift coefficients of the circular cylinder model. By comparing the test cases with different suction flow rates, it is found that there exists an optimal suction flow rate for the maximum VIV control. The cases with higher suction flow rates do not necessarily behave better than those with lower suction flow rates. With the experimental setting used in the present study, the suction flow control method is found to behave better for VIV suppression when the ratio of the suction flow velocity to the oncoming flow velocity is less than one.
