Central vision loss disrupts voluntary shifts of spatial attention during visual search. Recently, we reported that a simulated scotoma impaired learned spatial attention towards regions likely to contain search targets. In that task, search items were overlaid on natural scenes. Because natural scenes can induce explicit awareness of learned biases leading to voluntary shifts of attention, here we used a search display with a blank background less likely to induce awareness of target location probabilities. Participants searched both with and without a simulated central scotoma: a training phase contained targets more often in one screen quadrant and a testing phase contained targets equally often in all quadrants. In Experiment 1, training used no scotoma, while testing alternated between blocks of scotoma and no-scotoma search. Experiment 2 training included the scotoma and testing again alternated between scotoma and no-scotoma search. Response times and saccadic behaviors in both experiments showed attentional biases towards the high-probability target quadrant during scotoma and no-scotoma search. Whereas simulated central vision loss impairs learned spatial attention in the context of natural scenes, our results show that this may not arise from impairments to the basic mechanisms of attentional learning indexed by visual search tasks without scenes.Supplementary InformationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.3758/s13414-021-02416-9.

Decoding overt shifts of attention in depth through pupillary and cortical frequency tagging

Objective. We have recently developed a prototype of a novel human-computer interface for assistive communication based on voluntary shifts of attention (gaze) from a far target to a near target associated with a decrease of pupil size (Pupillary Accommodative Response, PAR), an automatic vegetative response that can be easily recorded. We report here an extension of that approach based on pupillary and cortical frequency tagging. Approach. In 18 healthy volunteers, we investigated the possibility of decoding attention shifts in depth by exploiting the evoked oscillatory responses of the pupil (Pupillary Oscillatory Response, POR, recorded through a low-cost device) and visual cortex (Steady-State Visual Evoked Potentials, SSVEP, recorded from 4 scalp electrodes). With a simple binary communication protocol (focusing on a far target meaning ‘No’, focusing on the near target meaning ‘Yes’), we aimed at discriminating when observer’s overt attention (gaze) shifted from the far to the near target, which were flickering at different frequencies. Main results. By applying a binary linear classifier (Support Vector Machine, SVM, with leave-one-out cross validation) to POR and SSVEP signals, we found that, with only twenty trials and no subjects’ behavioural training, the offline median decoding accuracy was 75% and 80% with POR and SSVEP signals, respectively. When the two signals were combined together, accuracy reached 83%. The number of observers for whom accuracy was higher than 70% was 11/18, 12/18 and 14/18 with POR, SVVEP and combined features, respectively. A signal detection analysis confirmed these results. Significance. The present findings suggest that exploiting frequency tagging with pupillary or cortical responses during an attention shift in the depth plane, either separately or combined together, is a promising approach to realize a device for communicating with Complete Locked-In Syndrome (CLIS) patients when oculomotor control is unreliable and traditional assistive communication, even based on PAR, is unsuccessful.

The speed of voluntary and priority-driven shifts of visual attention.

The question how fast spatial attention moves between different visual objects remains debated. We used electrophysiological measures to determine the speed of voluntary and visually guided shifts of attention. Participants shifted attention from a known benchmark object (T1) to a benchmark-defined target object (T2) in tasks where these shifts had to be controlled endogenously and tasks where they could be guided by visible stimulus attributes (target features or arrow cues). To track the speed of these attention shifts, we measured event-related potential (ERP) markers of attentional object selection (N2pc components). The N2pc to T1 emerged earlier than the N2pc to T2, confirming the presence of serial attention shifts. N2pc onset differences between T1 and T2 revealed that shifts guided by target features were triggered within 50 ms, whereas voluntary movements of attention took substantially longer (150 ms). Attention shifts signaled by arrow cues were initiated within about 100 ms. Results show that genuinely voluntary shifts of attention are slower than shifts that are guided by cues or target features, but can still be initiated more rapidly than has previously been assumed. Attention and sensation in functional motor disorder

Functional motor disorder (FMD), also called psychogenic motor disorder or conversion disorder, describes impairments of motor function where there is no evidence of organic disease. The diagnosis is usually confirmed by positive clinical signs, such as Hoover's sign, in which normal power returns when attention is diverted away from the affected limb. This suggests that selective attention is an important determinant of these functional symptoms. The present study is the first specifically to explore the shifting of spatial attention in relation to the side of FMD. We tested 14 patients with unilateral functional upper limb weakness on three tasks requiring detection of visual targets close to the affected or unaffected hand, or touches to the hand itself. Targets were preceded by central cues promoting voluntary shifts of attention, or peripheral cues promoting automatic shifts. We observed a reduced response to visual and/or tactile targets on the affected side in around half of the patients, by comparison with age-matched controls, indicating that some degree of detection cost often accompanies FMD. Additionally, although the patient group showed normal cueing effects on the visual tasks, they had a unilateral absence of cueing effect on the affected side in the tactile task. Consideration of the data in the context of recent theory suggests that the abnormality may be not in the shifting of attention itself, but rather in the consequences of attending to the affected side. Specifically, the expected cueing effects may be absent on the affected side, because attention to a functionally weak limb increases the perception of the symptom, including any reduced sensory response. This preliminary research suggests promising new lines of investigation into the role of attention, and particularly somatic attention, in FMD.

Predictions, precision, and agentive attention.

Ransom, Fazelpour, and Mole (this journal - 2017) raise an important puzzle for the 'prediction error minimization' account of cognitive processing. That account depicts all cognitive processing as fundamentally in the business of minimizing prediction errors concerning the evolving flow of sensory information. One of the cornerstones of these highly ambitious, would-be unifying accounts is their depiction of attention as nothing other than the process of optimizing the precision (inverse variance) of critical prediction error signals. But that story, Ransom et al. suggest, cannot accommodate voluntary shifts of attention. In this paper, I show why this challenge to the grand unifying project fails. It fails because it locates the origins of voluntary attention in complexes of unanalyzed desire rather than in changing complexes of beliefs.

Are Categorical Spatial Relations Encoded by Shifting Visual Attention between Objects?

Perceiving not just values, but relations between values, is critical to human cognition. We tested the predictions of a proposed mechanism for processing categorical spatial relations between two objects—the shift account of relation processing—which states that relations such as ‘above’ or ‘below’ are extracted by shifting visual attention upward or downward in space. If so, then shifts of attention should improve the representation of spatial relations, compared to a control condition of identity memory. Participants viewed a pair of briefly flashed objects and were then tested on either the relative spatial relation or identity of one of those objects. Using eye tracking to reveal participants’ voluntary shifts of attention over time, we found that when initial fixation was on neither object, relational memory showed an absolute advantage for the object following an attention shift, while identity memory showed no advantage for either object. This result is consistent with the shift account of relation processing. When initial fixation began on one of the objects, identity memory strongly benefited this fixated object, while relational memory only showed a relative benefit for objects following an attention shift. This result is also consistent, although not as uniquely, with the shift account of relation processing. Taken together, we suggest that the attention shift account provides a mechanistic explanation for the overall results. This account can potentially serve as the common mechanism underlying both linguistic and perceptual representations of spatial relations.

Cross-modal distractors modulate oscillatory alpha power: the neural basis of impaired task performance.

Unexpected novel sounds capture one's attention, even when irrelevant to the task pursued (e.g., playing video game). This often comes at a cost to the task (e.g., slower responding). The neural basis for this behavioral distraction effect is not well understood and is subject of this study. Our approach was motivated by findings from cuing paradigms suggesting a link between modulations in oscillatory activity and voluntary attention shifts. The current study tested whether oscillatory activity is also modulated by a task-irrelevant auditory distractor, reflecting a neural signature of an involuntary shift of attention and accounting for the impaired task performance. We reanalyzed magnetoencephalographic data collected via an auditory-visual distraction paradigm in which a task-relevant visual stimulus was preceded by a task-irrelevant sound on each trial. In 87.5% this was a regular sound (Standard); in 12.5% this was a novel sound (Distractor). We compared nonphase locked oscillatory activity in a time window prior to the visual target as a function of the experimental manipulation (Distractor, Standard). We found low power in the pretarget time window for Distractors compared to Standards in the alpha and beta frequency bands. Importantly, individual alpha power correlated with response speed on a trial-by-trial basis for the Distractor only. Sources were localized to the occipital cortex, and also to the parietal and supratemporal cortices. These findings support our hypothesis that the distractor-related alpha power modulation indexes an involuntary shift of attention which accounts for the impaired task performance.

Expect the unexpected: a paradoxical effect of cue validity on the orienting of attention.

Predictive central cues generate location-based expectancies, voluntary shifts of attention, and facilitate target processing. Often, location-based expectancies and voluntary attention are confounded in cueing tasks. Here we vary the predictability of central cues to determine whether they can evoke the inhibition of target processing in three go/no-go experiments. In the first experiment, the central cue was uninformative and did not predict the target's location. Importantly, these cues did not seem to affect target processing. In the second experiment, the central cue indicated the most or the least likely location of the target. Surprisingly, both types of cues facilitated target processing at the cued location. In the third experiment, the central cue predicted the most likely location of a no-go target, but it did not provide relevant information pertaining to the location of the go target. Again, the central cue facilitated processing of the go target. These results suggest that efforts to strategically allocate inhibition may be thwarted by the paradoxical monitoring of the cued location. The current findings highlight the need to further explore the relationship between location-based expectancies and spatial attention in cueing tasks.

Tracking the will to attend: Cortical activity indexes self-generated, voluntary shifts of attention.

The neural substrates of volition have long tantalized philosophers and scientists. Over the past few decades, researchers have employed increasingly sophisticated technology to investigate this issue, but many studies have been limited considerably by their reliance on intrusive experimental procedures (e.g., abrupt instructional cues), measures of brain activity contaminated by overt behavior, or introspective self-report techniques of questionable validity. Here, we used multivoxel pattern time-course analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging data to index voluntary, covert perceptual acts-shifts of visuospatial attention-in the absence of instructional cues, overt behavioral indices, and self-report. We found that these self-generated, voluntary attention shifts were time-locked to activity in the medial superior parietal lobule, supporting the hypothesis that this brain region is engaged in voluntary attentional reconfiguration. Self-generated attention shifts were also time-locked to activity in the basal ganglia, a novel finding that motivates further research into the role of the basal ganglia in acts of volition. Remarkably, prior to self-generated shifts of attention, we observed early and selective increases in the activation of medial frontal (dorsal anterior cingulate) and lateral prefrontal (right middle frontal gyrus) cortex-activity that likely reflects processing related to the intention or preparation to reorient attention. These findings, which extend recent evidence on freely chosen motor movements, suggest that dorsal anterior cingulate and lateral prefrontal cortices play key roles in both overt and covert acts of volition, and may constitute core components of a brain network underlying the will to attend.

High spatial validity is not sufficient to elicit voluntary shifts of attention.

Previous research suggests that the use of valid symbolic cues is sufficient to elicit voluntary shifts of attention. The present study interpreted this previous research within a broader theoretical context which contends that observers will voluntarily use symbolic cues to orient their attention in space when the temporal costs of using the cues are perceived to be less than the temporal costs of searching without the aid of the cues. In this view, previous research has not addressed the sufficiency of valid symbolic cues, because the temporal cost of using the cues is usually incurred before the target display appears. To address this concern, 70%-valid spatial word cues were presented simultaneously with a search display. In addition, other research suggests that opposing cue-dependent and cue-independent spatial biases may operate in these studies and alter standard measures of orienting. After identifying and controlling these opposing spatial biases, the results of two experiments showed that the word cues did not elicit voluntary shifts of attention when the search task was relatively easy but did when the search task was relatively difficult. Moreover, the findings also showed that voluntary use of the word cues changed over the course of the experiment when the task was difficult, presumably because the temporal cost of searching without the cue lessened as the task got easier with practice. Altogether, the present findings suggested that the factors underlying voluntary control are multifaceted and contextual, and that spatial validity alone is not sufficient to elicit voluntary shifts of attention.

Volitional Mechanisms Mediate the Cuing Effect of Pitch on Attention Orienting: The Influences of Perceptual Difficulty and Response Pressure

Our cognitive system tends to link auditory pitch with spatial location in a specific manner (ie high-pitched sounds are usually associated with an upper location, and low sounds are associated with a lower location). Recent studies have demonstrated that this cross-modality association biases the allocation of visual attention and affects performance despite the auditory stimuli being irrelevant to the behavioural task. There is, however, a discrepancy between studies in their interpretation of the underlying mechanisms. Whereas we have previously claimed that the pitch-location mapping is mediated by volitional shifts of attention (Chiou & Rich, 2012, Perception, 41: , 339-353), other researchers suggest that this cross-modal effect reflects automatic shifts of attention (Mossbridge, Grabowecky, & Suzuki, 2011, Cognition, 121: , 133-139). Here we report a series of three experiments examining the effects of perceptual and response-related pressure on the ability of nonpredictive pitch to bias visual attention. We compare it with two control cues: a predictive pitch that triggers voluntary attention shifts and a salient peripheral flash that evokes involuntary shifts. The results show that the effect of nonpredictive pitch is abolished by pressure at either perceptual or response levels. By contrast, the effects of the two control cues remain significant, demonstrating the robustness of informative and perceptually salient stimuli in directing attention. This distinction suggests that, in contexts of high perceptual demand and response pressure, cognitive resources are primarily engaged by the task-relevant stimuli, which effectively prevents uninformative pitch from orienting attention to its cross-modally associated location. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that the link between pitch and location affects attentional deployment via volitional rather than automatic mechanisms.

Effects of spatial, temporal and spatiotemporal cueing are alike when attention is directed voluntarily.

Visual cues that allow predicting location and onset of a stimulus facilitate orienting. In a seminal study, Coull and Nobre (J Neurosci 18:7426-7435, 1998) adapted the spatial cueing paradigm to investigate temporal orienting. Recent research in the spatial domain suggests though that the cues used in the spatial and temporal conditions were not comparable. In the spatial condition predictive arrow cues engaged involuntary and voluntary attention, in the temporal condition line width cues elicited voluntary attention shifts. A valid comparison between attentional modalities on the behavioural and neurophysiological level requires though that cues differ only with respect to attentional modality (spatial, temporal) and not in other aspects. To develop cues that are comparable and to assess spatial and temporal orienting, new line width cues for spatial and temporal orienting were devised that both engage only voluntary attention, and the results were compared to the cues used by Coull and Nobre (J Neurosci 18:7426-7435, 1998). Further, catch trials were included to counteract reorienting at the late time interval to promote comparisons between spatial and temporal data at that interval. The results showed that the outcome of the comparison between spatial, temporal and spatiotemporal orienting depended on the type of cue that was used and hence the type of attention that was engaged in each condition. The results indicated that orienting is equally effective in space and in time when attention is directed voluntarily. The new cues employed here can easily be used for future studies to assess underlying brain mechanisms.

Does evaluative pressure make you less or more distractible? Role of top-down attentional control over response selection.

People's ability to resist cognitive distraction is crucial in many situations. The present research examines individuals' resistance to attentional distraction under conditions of evaluative pressure. In a series of 4 studies, participants had to complete various attentional tasks while believing their intelligence was or was not under the scrutiny of an experimenter. Using a spatial cuing paradigm, Studies 1 through 3 demonstrated that feeling evaluated led participants to implement stronger feature-based attentional control, which resulted in more (or less) distraction when irrelevant information matched (did not match) the searched-for target. Study 4 ruled out the possibility that the above effects were due to voluntary shifts of attention and demonstrated that the control settings implemented under evaluative pressure resulted in stronger goal-contingent response priming. Thus, the way individuals relate to the task-the performance context in which they are-induces strong attentional selection biases. Altogether, the present findings highlight an overlooked form of top-down modulation of attention based on performance self-relevance. Implications for both the current models of attentional control and the current hypotheses on the impact of evaluative pressure on cognition, as well as the consequences for more complex performances, are discussed.

Masked stimuli modulate endogenous shifts of spatial attention

Unconscious stimuli can influence participants' motor behavior but also more complex mental processes. Recent research has gradually extended the limits of effects of unconscious stimuli. One field of research where such limits have been proposed is spatial cueing, where exogenous automatic shifts of attention have been distinguished from endogenous controlled processes which govern voluntary shifts of attention. Previous evidence suggests unconscious effects on mechanisms of exogenous shifts of attention. Here, we applied a cue-priming paradigm to a spatial cueing task with arbitrary cues by centrally presenting a masked symmetrical prime before every cue stimulus. We found priming effects on response times in target discrimination tasks with the typical dynamic of cue-priming effects (Experiments 1 and 2) indicating that central symmetrical stimuli which have been associated with endogenous orienting can modulate shifts of spatial attention even when they are masked. Prime-Cue Congruency effects of perceptual dissimilar prime and cue stimuli (Experiment 3) suggest that these effects cannot be entirely reduced to perceptual repetition priming of cue processing. In addition, priming effects did not differ between participants with good and poor prime recognition performance consistent with the view that unconscious stimulus features have access to processes of endogenous shifts of attention.

Contribution of nonattentive motion to object tracking

Object tracking has been generally discussed in relation to attention, but it is quite possible that nonattentive low-level motion components are involved. To elucidate this issue, we examined temporal aspects of object tracking by using stimuli comprised of just a single attribute and those comprised of multiple attributes. High-level motion processes supposedly can process cross-attribute motion, while nonattentive low-level motion processes cannot handle such motion. In Experiment 1, we measured the upper temporal limits for within- and cross-attribute object tracking, using stimuli defined by several different attributes (luminance, motion, binocular disparity, flicker, and contrast). It was found that the temporal limits with within-attribute stimuli (4-5 Hz) were much higher than those with cross-attribute stimuli (2-3 Hz). These results suggest that mechanisms involved in within- and cross-attribute object tracking are partially different. We conducted two additional experiments to clarify the nature of this difference. In Experiment 2, we measured the temporal limits for classical apparent motion perception using the same stimulus combinations as for Experiment 1. The temporal limits with within- and cross-attribute stimuli were both between 4 and 5 Hz. These values corresponded to those of within-attribute object tracking but were faster than those of cross-attribute object tracking. In Experiment 3, we measured the temporal limit for voluntary shifts of attention that did not involve motion. Temporal limits quite similar to those for cross-attribute object tracking (2-3 Hz) were obtained. These results suggest that nonattentive motion mechanisms are involved in within-attribute object tracking, whereas attention-based mechanisms mediate cross-attribute object tracking.

Going rogue in the spatial cuing paradigm: High spatial validity is insufficient to elicit voluntary shifts of attention.

Voluntary shifts of attention are often motivated in experimental contexts by using well-known symbols that accurately predict the direction of targets. The authors report 3 experiments, which showed that the presentation of predictive spatial information does not provide sufficient incentive to elicit voluntary shifts of attention. For instance, when allowed to spontaneously choose between using a 100%-valid spatial word cue versus searching without the aid of the cue, observers consistently searched for a unique target without the aid of the cue. Another experiment showed that observers' choice to use spatial word cues could be biased by providing dedicated time to process the cue before the target display appeared (i.e., nonzero, cue-target SOAs). Although this dedicated processing time has routinely been included in spatial cuing experiments, its incentive-inducing role has never been acknowledged. Implications for theories of both voluntary and involuntary control are discussed.

Control of Spatial and Feature-Based Attention in Frontoparietal Cortex

Visual attention selects task-relevant information from scenes to help achieve behavioral goals. Attention can be deployed within multiple domains to select specific spatial locations, features, or objects. Recent evidence has shown that voluntary shifts of attention in multiple domains are consistently associated with transient increases in cortical activity in medial superior parietal lobule, suggesting that this may be the source of a domain-independent control signal that initiates the reconfiguration of attention. To investigate this hypothesis, we used fMRI to measure changes in cortical activation while human subjects shifted attention between spatial locations or between colors at a location. Univariate multiple regression analysis revealed a common, domain-independent transient signal [in posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and prefrontal cortex] time-locked to shifts of attention in both domains. However, multivariate pattern classification conducted on the cortical surface revealed that the spatiotemporal pattern of activity within PPC differed reliably for spatial and feature-based attention shifts. These results suggest that the posterior parietal cortex is a common hub for the control of attention shifts but contains subpopulations of neurons with domain-specific tuning for cognitive control.
