Implementing Sustainable Fees in the Ship Waste Reception Service to Match with European Policy and Port Traffic Characterization

The European Directive in force on port reception facilities for waste from ships applicable to both ports and ships has the aim of protecting the marine environment. To promote this goal, the directive imposes on every member state the availability of port reception facilities adequate in meeting the needs of the ships normally using the ports without causing undue delay in their operations. As an effective tool to discourage the discharges of waste at sea, the new policy requires ports to implement a cost recovery system for the waste reception service through mandatory fees to be paid by ships irrespective of the volume of waste delivered at port. In the context of the obligations that European ports must fulfill according to the new policy on waste from ships, the present study analyzes the Spanish ports’ database. The research relates traffic characterization with the economic results of the waste reception service in each port authority to ensure that the effective reception costs are covered. The findings will enable building a robust port fee system adapted to the ship typology with the aim of mitigating economic imbalances and ensuring that ships contribute to the port reception facilities’ costs according to their characteristics.

Analisis Pemasaran Maggot BSF (Black Soldier Fly) Desa Bojo

This study aims to analyze the marketing system of maggot bsf in Bojo Village. Based on the results of observations and interviews in Bojo Village, the main problem was found, namely household waste. The garbage was thrown out of place, the garbage was found scattered on the beach and close to residential areas. The waste that is wasted includes organic waste from household waste. Organic waste can cause environmental problems such as air and soil pollution and cause various negative impacts on public health. A solution that can be done by village communities is maggot cultivation from Black Soldier Fly (BSF) flies, as an effective and easy way to manage organic waste. By cultivating maggot for organic waste, we can create a high-value resource that can have a positive impact on the environment and the economy of the village community. Maggot cultivation aims to decompose organic matter left over from household food consumption. Able to digest organic waste quickly so that it helps reduce the volume of organic waste. In addition, maggots are also able to prevent uncontrolled accumulation of waste. In fact, casgot which is the result of the decomposition of waste carried out by maggot can produce high-quality organic fertilizer that can increase soil fertility. Maggot has a high nutrient content that helps local agriculture. Maggot cultivation can also be a new business opportunity for village communities because it can be sold as animal feed. It has an impact on increasing the income of the local community.

Innovativeness Towards Transformation from Linear to Circular Economy

Knowledge/technology transfer stimulates the development of new technologies and products and even transfer from a linear economy to more friendly business activities. The problem of climate change and the constantly increasing volume of various waste causes challenges and, at the same time, opportunities for business development. Transition to circular economy might decline energy from fossil resources and lower business influence on the climate change. However, the shift to new business models requires new knowledge and technology. Thus, the adoption of good practices or gained knowledge or technology speeds up the transition to a circular economy. The aim of the paper is to explore the complex relationships between knowledge transfer and circular economy. The study was based on a questionnaire. For evaluation, the 5-point Likert scale has been used. The survey has been carried out by the CATI principle. For the analysis of the results, the research applied descriptive statistics and correlation. Empirical research focuses on Nordic MNCs in Lithuania and Estonia. The results proved that companies tend to develop innovations or new products. Additionally, they have a positive attitude towards transferring their own business to the circular economy. The results fulfil the gap in the interlinkages between the theory of circular economy and the innovations concept.

TRANSFORMASI PENGELOLAAN SAMPAH RUMAH TANGGA : PENDEKATAN ZERO WASTE MENUJU PERUBAHAN PERILAKU BERBASIS LINGKUNGAN

The problem of household waste management is one of the pressing environmental issues in various countries, including Indonesia. The high volume of waste that is not properly processed contributes to environmental pollution, such as soil, water, and air pollution. Tasik Rejo Village is one of the villages that focuses on waste management, this village has a BUMDes that is active in waste management but is only piled up at the TPS. Through Community Service activities, the service team carries out activities to change waste so that it can be utilized properly. The purpose of this service is to provide education and skills to Tasik Rejo village residents about the importance of maintaining environmental sustainability and a healthy lifestyle through waste processing, one of which is into fertilizer, so that waste can have value that can be utilized. This service method uses the ABCD method where the community plays an active role in every stage. Based on the results of the service, it can be said that the community is not fully aware of the importance of sorting waste, therefore further assistance is needed, but this service activity has a positive influence on changes in healthy living behavior in the community.

Leveraging Municipal Solid Waste Management with Plasma Pyrolysis and IoT: Strategies for Energy Byproducts and Resource Recovery

The escalating challenges of municipal solid waste (MSW) management, exacerbated by the classification of MSW as hazardous waste due to the presence of heavy metals (HMs) and toxic compounds, necessitate innovative treatment strategies. Plasma pyrolysis has emerged as a promising technology for converting MSW into valuable energy byproducts, such as syngas, bio-oil, and slag, while significantly reducing waste volume. However, maintaining optimal operational parameters during the plasma pyrolysis process remains a complex challenge that can adversely affect both the efficiency and the quality and quantity of outputs. To address this issue, the integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) presents a transformative approach. By leveraging IoT technologies, real-time monitoring and advanced data analytics can be employed to optimize the operational conditions of plasma pyrolysis systems, ensuring consistent performance and maximizing resource recovery. This review explores the synergistic integration of plasma pyrolysis and IoT as a novel strategy for MSW management. The slag from plasma treatment can be efficiently channeled into anaerobic digestion (AD) systems, promoting resource recovery through biogas production and the generation of nutrient-rich digestate. This synergy not only mitigates the environmental impacts associated with traditional MSW disposal methods but also paves the way for sustainable energy recovery and resource management. Ultimately, this review presents a comprehensive framework for exploiting plasma pyrolysis and IoT in addressing the pressing issues of hazardous MSW, thereby fostering a circular economy through innovative waste-to-energy solutions.

Deciphering the phenotypic, inflammatory, and endocrine disrupting impacts of e-waste plastic-associated chemicals.

As the volume of plastic waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) continues to rise, a significant portion is disposed of in the environment, with only a small fraction being recycled. Both disposal and recycling pose unknown health risks that require immediate attention. Existing knowledge of WEEE plastic toxicity is limited and mostly relies on epidemiological data and association studies, with few insights into the underlying toxicity mechanisms. Therefore, this study aimed to perform comprehensive chemical screening and mechanistic toxicological assessment of WEEE plastic-associated chemicals. Chemical analysis, utilizing suspect screening based on high-resolution mass spectrometry, along with quantitative target chemical analysis, unveiled numerous hazardous compounds including polyaromatic compounds, organophosphate flame retardants, phthalates, benzotriazoles, etc. Toxicity endpoints included perturbation of morphological phenotypes using the Cell Painting approach, inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and endocrine disruption. Results demonstrated that WEEE plastic chemicals altered the phenotypes of the cytoskeleton, endoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondria in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, WEEE chemicals induced inflammatory responses in resting macrophages and altered inflammatory responses in lipopolysaccharide-primed macrophages. Furthermore, WEEE chemicals activated the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway, indicating oxidative stress, and the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). Endocrine disruption was also observed through the activation of estrogenic receptor-α (ER-α) and the induction of anti-androgenic activity. The findings show that WEEE plastic-associated chemicals exert effects in multiple subcellular sites, via different receptors and mechanisms. Thus, an integrated approach employing both chemical and toxicological methods is essential for comprehensive assessment of the toxicity mechanisms and cumulative chemical burden of WEEE plastic-associated chemicals.

Evolution of Macrofauna Structure during the Composting Process of Household Waste

The fact that Morocco is an agricultural country and the large volume of biodegradable waste produced by the population make composting so important. The degradation of organic matter is facilitated by faunal and floral macro and micro-organisms that act in different stages of maturation; studies on this fauna are quite rare both nationally and internationally. On a sample of two tons of household waste, we documented invertebrates that colonized compost heaps and then assessed the changes in the structure of the invertebrate population during the different phases. Our study revealed the presence of several zoological groups colonizing the compost heaps during the different composting phases; we noted the presence of: (1) Macroscopic invertebrates, in order of number of individuals: insect larvae, ants, earthworms, sowbugs, spiders, springtails, and millipedes, and (2) Microscopic invertebrates, the most abundant in terms of individuals: mites and nematodes. As for the order of appearance, we observed that insect larvae were the first to colonize the compost heap from the very first days of installation, followed by woodlice observed during the thermophilic phase and disappearing towards the end of the process. Earthworms were observed during the end of the thermophilic phase, while springtails were observed more during the cooling and maturation phases. Our study revealed the presence of a good quality of fauna during the composting process, which are indicators of good compost quality and play a major role in the circulation of nutrients, thus ensuring the provision of essential elements for plant nutrition.

Assessing the Environmental Impact of the Mining Industry

Mining is very vital to the production of goods, services and infrastructure; it advances the quality of lives in the society. However, the possible hazard of waste and radioactivity generated by mining, dumping and tailing, has called on the society to find ways of seeking remedy that will adequately treat mining waste from mine dump, tailing and abandoned mine. Mine waste reuse and recycling in mining industries could offer cost-effective benefits through offsetting raw material requirements and decreasing the volumes of waste to be managed. Impact and mechanism of mine damage to the environment was discussed together with the remediation principles. Practical ways in which country’s state authority and civil society can keep a close watch and enhance the enforcement of laws and regulations were highlighted. The prediction for the control of mineral exploration and environmental assessment was also discussed for executing a specific control to take preventive measures.

DEVELOPMENT OF NONPARAMETRIC PATH FUNCTION USING HYBRID TRUNCATED SPLINE AND KERNEL FOR MODELING WASTE-TO-ECONOMIC VALUE BEHAVIOR

Waste management remains a challenge, including in Batu City, East Java, Indonesia. Rapid population growth and economic activities in the city have resulted in a substantial increase in waste volume. One of the key factors in solving waste problems is the mindset of the community towards waste management. The application of statistical analysis methods can be an effective approach to solving problems related to waste management from an economic point of view. Nonparametric path analysis is a statistical method that does not rely on the assumption that the curve is known. Nonparametric path analysis is performed if the data does not fulfill the linearity assumption. This study aims to determine the best nonparametric path function with a hybrid truncated spline and kernel approach among EV values of 0.5; 0.8; and 1. In addition, this study also aims to test the significance of the best path function obtained. The data used in this study are timer data obtained from the Featured Basic Research Grant. The results showed that the best model of hybrid truncated spline and kernel nonparametric path analysis is a hybrid model of truncated spline nonparametric path of linear polynomial degree 1 knot and kernel triangle nonparametric path at EV 0.5. In addition, the significance of the best nonparametric truncated spline and kernel hybrid path function estimation using jackknife resampling shows that all exogenous variables have a significant effect on endogenous variables as evidenced by a p-value smaller than (0.05).

Manajemen Tempat Pengelolaan Sampah Terpadu (TPST) di Desa Cilongok Kabupaten Banyumas

Effective and sustainable waste management has become a major challenge in Cilongok Village, Cilongok District, due to the high volume of domestic waste generated by the community. This study aims to design integrated waste management facilities (TPST) as a solution to reduce environmental impacts and raise public awareness about waste management. The research employs a qualitative methodology, with data collected through observations, interviews, and documentation, and informants selected using purposive sampling. The study results are analyzed from the following aspects: Planning: The planning process involves several strategies or stages, including work program planning, socialization planning, and development planning. Organization: A structured organization and a clear division of roles and responsibilities have been established within the waste management institution. Implementation: Flagship programs have been executed, such as compost production, RDF (Refuse-Derived Fuel) manufacturing, and maggot feed production from waste slurry. Supervision: Supervision activities include internal monitoring among TPST members and external involvement, particularly from village government authorities.

Composting Urban Biowaste: A Potential Solution for Waste Management and Soil Fertility Improvement in Dolisie, Congo

Population growth, urbanization, and changing consumption patterns are contributing to an increase in household waste production, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Composting of biowaste presents a sustainable solution by reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills while enriching the soil. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the suitability of solid household biowaste for composting in market garden crops in Dolisie (the Republic of Congo). Specifically, the study aimed to (i) assess the production and management practices of solid household waste in relation to socio-economic factors, (ii) analyze the chemical composition of solid household biowaste and its concentration of trace elements (TEs), and (iii) determine the potential phytotoxicity of solid household biowaste across different production seasons. In this study, wastes were collected from 40 households over a 60-day period, with daily sorting conducted during both the dry and wet seasons. Using a completely randomized design, various compost application rates were incorporated into the soil to conduct a germination test. The quality of the biowaste and compost was evaluated through physicochemical analyses. Results showed that approximately 90% of high-income households received regular waste collection services and practiced waste separation in contrast to middle- and low-income households. The composition of the biowaste was primarily composed of fruit and vegetable scraps, with slight contamination by chromium and cadmium. Temperature, pH, and humidity levels showed similar trends during compost formation in both the rainy and dry seasons. Germination rates were above 80% in all treatments across both seasons, indicating that the compost was mature. Overall, all physicochemical parameters of the compost met established quality standards, and trace element concentrations were below the recommended thresholds. The study concluded that biowaste, once converted into compost, can be safely applied to agricultural soils without posing any risk of phytotoxicity or contamination to crops.

TEKNOLOGI SOSIALISASI INOVATIF UNTUK PENGELOLAAN SAMPAH PLASTIK SEBAGAI PILAR EKOWISATA PULAU MAITARA

Maitara Island, as a potential ecotourism destination in Tidore Islands City, faces serious challenges in managing plastic waste that could threaten its environmental sustainability. This research aims to develop innovative socialization technology to enhance public awareness and behavioral change in plastic waste management through recycling practices. The research uses a mixed-methods approach (qualitative and quantitative), involving 100 respondents from the community of Maitara Island who were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and surveys using questionnaires. Qualitative data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis techniques, while quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The research results show that the applied socialization technology increased the community's understanding of the importance of recycling by up to 85% and encouraged 70% of respondents to practice waste sorting at home. This technology also reduced the volume of unmanaged plastic waste by 30%, supporting the sustainability of Maitara Island as an ecotourism destination. This research provides a theoretical contribution to the literature on technology-based social change and offers a practical model that can be adapted in other regions. The social implications of this research include empowering local communities and strengthening technology-based environmental sustainability initiatives.

Fish waste biorefinery: A novel approach to promote industrial sustainability.

In pursuit of sustainability and resource efficiency, concept of the circular economy has emerged as a promising framework for industries worldwide. The global fish processing industry generates a significant amount of waste, posing environmental challenges and economic inefficiencies. The substantial volume of fish waste generated globally along with its environmental impact highlights the urgent need to adopt sustainable practices. However, there is significant transformative potential in leveraging fish processing waste to generate industrial value. There are numerous applications of fish processing waste such as extraction of enzymes, protein hydrolysates, collagen, and gelatin. Moreover, the capacity of fish waste to generate chitin, fish oil, and biofuels foresees a future for sustainable resource management. However, it is also necessary to emphasize the need for innovation, and cross-sector collaboration to unlock this potential. While challenges lie ahead, this review explores transformative power of circular economy in reshaping the fisheries industry towards more sustainable future.

The carbon footprint and energy consumption of liver transplantation.

There is growing interest in the environmental impact of surgical procedures, yet more information is needed specifically regarding liver transplantation. This study aims to quantify the total greenhouse gas emissions, or carbon footprint, associated with adult whole-size liver transplantation from donors after brain death, including the relevant back-table graft preparation. The carbon footprint was calculated retrospectively using a bottom-up approach. This approach sums the volumes of energy consumption (kWh), volatile anesthetics (ml), solid waste (kg), and units of blood products transfused for each transplant. These consumption values were converted using validated conversion factors to the equivalent mass of carbon dioxide released into the environment (kg CO2e). A total of 147 patients with a mean age of 55 years (male, 78.9%) who underwent liver transplants between 2021 and 2022 were analyzed, resulting in 45.5 tons CO2e. The mean (SD) carbon footprint for each procedure was 309.8 (33.2) kg CO2e [95% CI: 304.4; 315.3]. Total energy power consumption was 96.5 MW, contributing 65.4% of greenhouse emissions (29.8 tons CO2e), while volatile anesthetics, solid waste, and blood product transfusions contributed 8.0% (3.64 tons CO2e), 5.9% (2.7 tons CO2e), and 20.6% (9.4 tons CO2e), respectively. The duration of surgery (t = 29.0; p < 0.001), transfused red blood cells (t = 13.1; p < 0.001), fresh frozen plasma (t = 11.1; p < 0.001), platelets (t = 8.9; p < 0.001), and the use of an extracorporeal pump machine (t = 3.6; p < 0.001) had the greatest effects on greenhouse gas emissions. Liver transplantation requires significant energy and is associated with considerable greenhouse gas emissions, particularly during longer procedures. Transplant clinicians, hospital administrators, policymakers, and patients should be aware of the environmental impact of liver transplantation and collaborate to adopt sustainable energy practices.

As a densely populated island country, factors such as rapid population growth, urbanization, changes in consumption patterns, and a lack of waste management infrastructure have also exacerbated this condition. Based on observations at the MMTC market, the rubbish problem is very serious due to the large amount of rubbish strewn about that is not cleaned up by traders. This research aims to explore efforts to increase education and training about recycling for the community, increase community participation in maintaining cleanliness through recycling activities in market communities, develop an efficient and effective recycling management system, and identify barriers to implementing recycling programs. reset on the MMTC market. The expected output of this research is increasing public awareness and participation in maintaining market cleanliness through recycling activities, comprehensive research results reports, and publication in SINTA indexed journals. It is hoped that this research can be an important step in efforts to create a cleaner and more sustainable market environment in Indonesia.

Hydromulch Maintains Strawberry Yield, Fruit Quality, and Plant Nutrition across Two Contrasting Environments

Plastic mulches made from nonbiodegradable polyethylene (i.e., “PE mulch”) are an integral tool for organic and conventional strawberry (Fragaria ×ananassa) production due to their ability to optimize soil and crop microclimates, suppress weeds, and promote overall yield and fruit quality. Unfortunately, PE mulch is primarily single-use and seldom recycled, leading to large volumes of plastic waste, with some of the plastic mulch fragments residing in the soil or polluting the surrounding agroecosystem. Although soil-biodegradable plastic mulches are a promising mulch technology that aims to reduce waste generation, no commercial products are available that meet the National Organic Program’s requirements. Hydromulches are an alternative mulch technology that is sprayable and can be formulated to meet organic requirements, but they have undergone limited testing. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of various hydromulch formulations on yield, fruit quality, and tissue nutrient status of day-neutral strawberries grown in two diverse environments. Hydromulches made with various formulations of paper, guar gum, or psyllium tackifiers were compared with PE mulch in Northwest Washington and North Dakota in 2022. Few treatment effects were observed throughout the experiment, and both strawberry yield and fruit quality were maintained. Slight variations in tissue nutrient concentrations were observed but not attributed to hydromulch treatments. Information resulting from this project demonstrates hydromulches maintain crop productivity and quality. Future research should evaluate the ability of hydromulches to suppress a spectrum of weed species, impacts on soil health, and economic viability.

A critical review of in-situ moisture distribution detection and characterization techniques utilizing deep dewatering for organic waste.

Deep dewatering is crucial for effectively reducing the volume of organic waste and facilitating its downstream transportation and disposal. An in-depth understanding of the occurrence states, composition, and morphological characteristics of moisture in organic waste is the basis for optimizing the dewatering process, improving dewatering efficiency, and reducing energy consumption. Given the common problems of time-consuming, low sensitivity, and poor parallelism of traditional methods, this work reviews the advanced in-situ analysis methods for moisture distribution of organic waste. The Raman microscopy imaging technique is highlighted to provide a new approach for visualizing the spatial distribution of moisture with different binding strengths in solid flocs. Various physical, chemical, and biological characteristics and characterization methods of organic waste related to deep dewatering are introduced, and they are correlated with conditioning methods. Almost all conditioning will cause changes in the physical characteristics of organic waste, while the improvement of dewatering performance is actually caused by changes in the chemical composition and biological characteristics of the matrix, and these characteristics are intrinsically related to the moisture distribution. The characterization and in-situ moisture detection methods presented in this work aim to support future studies in understanding changes in material composition related to improving dewatering performance and further clarifying the mechanisms of deep dewatering of organic wastes.

Pemberdayaan Perempuan dalam Mendaur Ulang Sampah Unorganik di RW 12 Kelurahan Pedurungan Tengah

This community service program, titled "Empowerment of Women in Recycling Inorganic Waste in RT 2, RW 12, Pedurungan Tengah," addresses the urgent need for effective waste management and environmental sustainability. The growing volume of inorganic waste poses significant challenges for local communities, particularly impacting women, who play a vital role in household waste management. The primary objective of this initiative was to empower women by enhancing their skills in recycling inorganic waste while raising awareness about environmental issues. The method employed involved participatory training sessions that included socialization, practical workshops, and group activities focused on recycling techniques. Throughout the program, participants learned to separate, process, and create valuable products from inorganic waste. The results were significant: approximately 80% of the participants demonstrated improved recycling skills and successfully produced marketable items. Additionally, the program fostered a greater sense of community engagement and increased awareness of environmental conservation among residents. In conclusion, this initiative not only empowered women economically but also contributed to a cleaner and more sustainable environment. The program highlights the importance of women as key agents of change in waste management practices, setting a foundation for ongoing environmental initiatives in the community.

Optimizing Sustainable High-performance Green-concrete Characteristics with Minimum Cement Content: Experimental Program

With the increasing cement demand for concrete production, this study aims to optimize the compressive strength and rapid chloride permeability (RCP) of highperformance green concrete (HPGC) with minimum cement content using an experimental and analytical Response Surface Method (RSM). Waste palm oil fuel ash (POFA) was treated by heating and grinding processes to produce ultrafine POFA (UPOFA), which was employed by 0%, 30%, and 60% as a replacement binder with cement in HPGC production. Silica Fume (SF) was replaced by 0%, 10%, 15%, and 20% of the remaining mass of cement. The RSM with a central composite design (CCD) approach was utilized to optimize the mix design parameters. The experimental results showed that HPGC containing 30% UPOFA and 20% SF achieved superior compressive strength at ages of 28 days and 90 days. The combination of 60% UPOFA and 20% SF demonstrated the lowest permeability to chloride. The developed models had statistical significance and demonstrated satisfactory correlation values (R2) of 99.43 and 99.9; 99.46 and 99.67 for compressive strength and RCP at 28 days and 90 days, respectively. Thus, RSM could be an effective strategy for optimizing the mix design and reducing the harmful environment by minimizing waste volume and intensive energy for cement production, thereby harnessing concrete sustainability. ANALYSIS OF ASIAN COUNTRIES IN CONSTRUCTION WASTE RECYCLING AND INTRODUCTION IN KAZAKHSTAN

The article presents a review of the experience of construction waste recycling in Asian countries, with a focus on the examination of successful strategies and practices that have been implemented in Japan, South Korea, and Singapore. As a consequence of the ongoing process of urbanization and the concomitant increase in construction activities in the region, the problem of construction waste management is becoming increasingly urgent. As reported by the World Bank, the Asia-Pacific region generates more than 1.5 billion tons of construction waste on an annual basis, necessitating the urgent implementation of recycling and reuse solutions. In comparison with Asian countries, the article also examines the problem of construction waste recycling in Kazakhstan, emphasizing the relevance of this topic in the context of a growing construction sector and increasing waste volumes. The quantity of construction waste generated in the country is reaching a considerable magnitude, with only a modest proportion of it being recycled, thereby creating significant environmental and economic challenges. The article examines existing recycling practices and technologies, including concrete recycling, wood and metal waste use, and examples of successful recycling implementation. The article identifies the challenges faced by construction companies, including a need for more infrastructure, low awareness, and economic barriers.
