Some helminths are recorded from volcano rabbits Romerolagus diazi, originally captured in Mexico, which died at the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust. Teporingonema cerropeladoensis, a new genus and species of trichostrongylid nematode, is described and its position within the Libyostrongylinae discussed.

The period of gestation of the volcano rabbit (Romerolagus diazi) was measured. Females were cohabited within one hour after confirmation of coitus or were separated from the males after cohabiting overnight. In 12 females which gave birth 20 times in total, the gestation period was 39 days in 35%, 40 days in 50% and 41 days in 15%; 85% of animals showed a gestation period of 39 or 40 days.

Breeding and rearing of the volcano rabbit (Romerolagus diazi) in captivity

In August, 1979, one female and three male wild volcano rabbits (Romerolagus diazi) were obtained and attempts have been made to rear and breed them in the laboratory. Mating was attempted from the 3rd month after the volcano rabbits were obtained and the first birth (two offspring) occurred after about one year. Thereafter, the same female gave birth three times and a total of 10 offspring have been obtained. Four females and three males could be weaned. The period of gestation was estimated as 34-48 days. The body weights at birth were 25-27 g for females and 32 g for males, and after three weeks, the weights had increased to 80-130 g for females and 95-128 g for males. Weaning was possible at 3 weeks of age. Volcano rabbits are small with an adult body weight of 400-600 g and they are also gentle animals. They should prove valuable if they can be established as laboratory animals in the future.

BANDING STUDIES IN THE VOLCANO RABBIT, ROMEROLAGUS DIAZI AND CRAWSHAY'S HARE LEPUS CRAWSHAYI. EVIDENCE OF THE LEPORID ANCESTRAL KARYOTYPE

G- and C-banded karyotypes are presented for the North American volcano rabbit, Romerolagus diazi (Ferrari-Perez, 1893) and an African hare species, Lepus crawshayi (de Winton, 1899). Both species are characterized by 2n = 48. While noticeable differences in the amounts of constitutive heterochromatin between the two taxa are apparent, the remarkable similarity of both chromosome morphology and G-banding pattern indicates a common evolutionary origin of the two genera. These observations support the hypothesis that the leporid ancestral karyotype has been maintained in the hares and certain of the rabbit taxa.

Boreostrongylus romerolagi n.sp. (Nematoda, Heligmonellidae) from a Mexican volcano rabbit, Romerolagus diazi

Boreostrongylus romerolagi n.sp. is described and figured from the duodenum of Romerolagus diazi collected in Mexico and which died in the Zoological Gardens, Antwerp. It is distinguished from the two nearest species of the genus B. kinsellai and B. dalrymplei by the size of the genital cone, the branching of the dorsal ray and the shorter spicules. ac]19790718
