Evolution of volatile compounds composition during grape berry development at the germplasm level

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are typically important factors in fleshy fruit crop quality. However, qualitative, and quantitative changes of VOCs profiles during grape berry development between different germplasms are not well understood. We surveyed VOCs composition and concentration at three berry development stages (fruit-set, veraison and maturation) in sixty-two grape accessions, and analyzed the relationship between monoterpenes contents and TERPENE SYNTHASE (TPS) genes expression. We identified ninety-four VOCs and observed different patterns of VOCs production through development among the different accessions. Total VOCs levels and the abundance of aldehydes, the most abundant VOCs at all three developmental stages, increased during berry development. Monoterpenes, hydrocarbons, and ketones levels peaked at maturation stage, while alcohols, sesquiterpenes and C13-noisoprenes had the highest concentrations at fruit-set. Correlation analysis indicated that several genes annotated as TPS contribute to monoterpene biosynthesis. These results have promoted the study of VOCs production in grape.

Deepwater Horizon 2010: Subsea dispersants protected responders from VOC exposure

Controversy remains on the use of Sub-Sea Dispersant Injection (SSDI) during the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) spill to minimize the exposure of responders on surface vessels to volatile organic compounds (VOC). Here, we use extensive evidence (>90,000 VOC measurements) collected near the oil well MC252 site during the DWH spill and demonstrate at a high level of statistical confidence that SSDI enhanced the safety and health conditions of the responders at the water surface through the reduction of airborne VOC concentrations in a dose-dependent manner. VOC levels on ships' decks were clearly diminished (p < 0.001) during subsea dispersant use, and incidents of peak concentrations (>50 ppm VOC) that could have been an immediate concern to worker health were reduced by a factor of ~6 to 19 when dispersants were delivered at the intended rate. SSDI thus played an important role in minimizing potential exposure to VOC, and should be embedded in guidelines and regulations for dispersant use.

Intercropping With Peppermint Increases Ground Dwelling Insect and Pollinator Abundance and Decreases Drosophila suzukii in Fruit

Intercropping can be used to reduce pest insects within agricultural systems, e.g., through deterring pests directly or by increasing habitat for their natural enemies. For example, plant produced volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can deter or confuse host-finding by insects through olfactory disruption. Drosophila suzukii is an invasive fruit fly of agricultural concern as it can lay its eggs in both ripening and fresh fruits and, uses olfactory cues to identify its wide range of host plants. Peppermint plants (Mentha × piperita) produce high levels of VOCs while growing and may, therefore, be suitable as an intercrop to reduce D. suzukii infestations in the field, as peppermint essential oil VOCs have previously been shown to deter D. suzukii in olfactory trials. We conducted a field intercropping experiment to evaluate the effectiveness of peppermint plants compared to traditional ryegrass/clover mixes in reducing D. suzukii oviposition in the field, and the effect of peppermint intercrops on other invertebrates. In the field, we monitored sentinel fruit baits weekly for D. suzukii infestation. Additionally, we monitored intercropping effects on the invertebrate community through weekly pitfall trap collection and through a pollinator point survey. We monitored for local, farm level presence of D. suzukii through apple cider vinegar traps within crop fields and along hedgerows and found high abundance of D. suzukii (&amp;gt;3,000 individuals trapped). Peppermint intercrops had fewer D. suzukii emerge from fruit baits and supported greater beneficial insect abundance (predators and pollinators) compared to ryegrass/clover. However, levels of D. suzukii were low across both intercrop types. Overall, we found that peppermint intercrops could be a potential aromatic intercrop used to reduce D. suzukii adult emergence from fruit compared to conventional ryegrass/clover mixes, however this trial should be replicated over multiple growing seasons, geographic locations, and host fruits. Furthermore, further study should determine the effects of the intercrop on the focal crop of interest.

Assessment and Classification of Volatile Profiles in Melon Breeding Lines Using Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction Coupled with Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry.

Cucumis melo L is one of the most commercial and economical crops in the world with several health beneficial compounds as such carotenoids, amino acids, vitamin A and C, minerals, and dietary fiber. Evaluation of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in different melon (Cucumis melo L.) breeding lines provides useful information for improving fruit flavor, aroma, and antimicrobial levels. In this study, the VOCs in 28 melon breeding lines harvested in 2019 were identified and characterized using head space solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This identified 113 VOCs with significant differences in composition and contents of among the breeding lines, including 15 esters, 27 aldehydes, 35 alcohols, 14 ketones, 4 acids, 10 hydrocarbons, 5 sulfurs, and 3 other compounds. The highest average contents of all the VOCs were found in BL-30 (13,973.07 µg/kg FW) and the lowest were in BL-22 (3947.13 µg/kg FW). BL-9 had high levels of carotenoid-derived VOCs. The compounds with the highest contents were benzaldehyde, geranylacetone, and β-ionone. Quality parameters such as color and sugar contents of melons were also measured. All the melon color readings were within the typical acceptable range. BL-22 and BL-14 had the highest and lowest sugar contents, respectively. Principal component analysis (PCA) produced diverse clusters of breeding lines based on flavor and aroma. BL-4, BL-7, BL-12, BL-20, and BL-30 were thus selected as important breeding lines based on their organoleptic, antimicrobial, and health-beneficial properties.

Determination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) levels from various smoking cessation aids by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry methodology

ABSTRACT An analytical method was validated and developed to determine the levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including 1,3-butadiene, isoprene, acrylonitrile, benzene, toluene, and styrene from smoking cessation aids using by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Seventeen non-ignitable cigarette type of smoking cessation aids, liquid-phase of smoking cessation aids, gas-phase of smoking cessation aids, and ignitable cigarette type of smoking cessation aids were analyzed for levels of six VOCs. The proposed method for six VOCs was validated in satisfactory linearity (R2 > 0.99), recovery (80.38–119.14%). limit of detection (LOD) (0.05–0.19 μg/ml), limit of quantification (LOQ) (0.07–0.18 μg/ml), accuracy (80.47–117.28%), and precision (0.15–7.22%). The mean concentrations of six VOCs were generated in 1,3-butadiene (6.18 μg/cigarette), isoprene (0.34 μg/cigarette), acrylonitrile (0.003 μg/cigarette), benzene (ND = not detected, the lower limit of detection), toluene (0.27 μg/cigarette), styrene (0.13 μg/cigarette). Results showed low levels of VOCs from smoking cessation aid except from liquid-phase of smoking cessation aids. These results are necessary to investigate unintentional hazardous substances generated from smoking cessation aids, and develop accurate analytical method in order to obtain scientific basis for safety management.

Pollution Characteristics and Source Analysis of Atmospheric VOCs in the Coastal Background of the Pearl River Delta

As an important precursor of ozone, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have attracted much attention. This study analyzed the temporal variation and composition of atmospheric VOCs in the coastal background of the Pearl River Delta, using real-time online monitoring data of VOCs obtained at the Yangmeikeng Ecological Environment Monitoring Station from August 2019 to July 2020. The major sources of VOCs were identified using a receptor model based on the PMF (positive matrix factorization) and HYSPLIT (hybrid single particle Lagrangian integrated trajectory) models. The results showed that the annual mean concentration of anthropogenic VOCs in the coastal background area of the Pearl River Delta was 9.30×10-9(volume fraction). There was obvious seasonal variation of VOCs in this area, with higher values in autumn and winter and lower values in summer. The coastal background area of the Pearl River Delta exhibited a different diurnal variation pattern to that of cities and other backgrounds. While the peak of VOCs concentration mainly occurred in the morning, from 10:00 to 11:00, concentration remained at a low level during the early morning and after 15:00. Ethylene, propylene, toluene, isopentane, isoprene, m/p-xylene, n-butane, and acetylene were the key species that affected the chemical composition of VOCs. The air masses affecting the coastal background area of the Pearl River Delta were mainly short-distance air masses from elsewhere in the province (25%), ocean air masses (27%), coastal air masses (31%), and inland air masses outside the province (17%). Among them, the average concentration of VOCs was lowest under the influence of ocean air masses, which is mainly affected by the mixed source of ship emissions and aging VOCs, gasoline volatilization, and vehicle emissions. In comparison, the concentration level of VOCs increased by 70.1% to 148.8% under the influence of other air masses. The transmission effects of industrial sources, LNG and LPG volatiles, and petrochemical sources were more prominent. Generally, the atmosphere of coastal background areas was severely affected by anthropogenic pollution, especially by air pollution masses transported from the land, while the impact of pollution by ships near shore and tourist traffic cannot be ignored.

Exploring Methods for Surveillance of Occupational Exposure from Additive Manufacturing in Four Different Industrial Facilities.

3D printing, a type of additive manufacturing (AM), is a rapidly expanding field. Some adverse health effects have been associated with exposure to printing emissions, which makes occupational exposure studies important. There is a lack of exposure studies, particularly from printing methods other than material extrusion (ME). The presented study aimed to evaluate measurement methods for exposure assessment in AM environments and to measure exposure and emissions from four different printing methods [powder bed fusion (PBF), material extrusion (ME), material jetting (MJ), and vat photopolymerization] in industry. Structured exposure diaries and volatile organic compound (VOC) sensors were used over a 5-day working week. Personal and stationary VOC samples and real-time particle measurements were taken for 1 day per facility. Personal inhalable and respirable dust samples were taken during PBF and MJ AM. The use of structured exposure diaries in combination with measurement data revealed that comparatively little time is spent on actual printing and the main exposure comes from post-processing tasks. VOC and particle instruments that log for a longer period are a useful tool as they facilitate the identification of work tasks with high emissions, highlight the importance of ventilation and give a more gathered view of variations in exposure. No alarming levels of VOCs or dust were detected during print nor post-processing in these facilities as adequate preventive measures were installed. As there are a few studies reporting negative health effects, it is still important to keep the exposure as low as reasonable.

Exposure of heat-not-burn tobacco effect on the quality of air and expiratory plume

The increasing interest to avoid the consumption of regular tobacco has lead in the development of several types of devices to decrease the effects of this practice on active and bystanders. In this work, the impact of the use of new heat-not-burn (HnB) devices has been evaluated and compared with that of regular cigarettes and electronic cigarettes (e-cigs). Portable monitoring devices were employed for CO, CO2, particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to evaluate the quality of indoor air and expiratory plume of both, active and passive, users during these practices. It can be noticed that the levels of VOCs in active HnB smokers expiratory air are five times lower in particular cases than those provided by regular tobacco and three times lower than those obtained for e-cigs, while the contribution of particulate matter to air pollution decreases between 200 and 600 times regarding the values obtained for e-cig vaping and regular tobacco smoking. The level of contaminants as CO decreases significantly in both, active and passive HnB smokers, in comparison with active and passive regular tobacco smokers, due to the absence of organic material combustion.Regarding passive HnB smokers, the exposure to HnB smoke do not increases the level of VOCs in ambient air nor in expiratory plume, remaining at the basal levels, being three times lower than values obtained to an exposure to regular tobacco smoke and two times lower than exposure to e-cigs vapours. On the other hand, the use of HnB devices decreases the concentration of PM in bystanders around thirty five times in relation with values obtained for passive regular tobacco smokers. Concerning the nicotine content delivered by HnB tobacco, data shown that HnB tobacco provides values from 0.5 to 1.7 mg of nicotine to the mainstream, being these values similar to those found in conventional tobacco.

Theoretical investigations of Tamm plasmon resonance for monitoring of isoprene traces in the exhaled breath: Towards chronic liver fibrosis disease biomarkers

Detection of blood-carried volatile organic compounds (VOCs) existing in the exhaled breath of humans is an attractive research point for noninvasive diagnosis of diseases. In this research, we have introduced a novel design of photonic crystals (PCs) for the detection of isoprene traces in the exhaled breath as a biomarker for liver fibrosis. To the best of our knowledge, this idea has been introduced for the first time. The proposed sensor structure contains a one-dimensional (1D) PCs covered with a cavity layer of air and a thin metallic layer of Au is attached on the top surface. Hence, the proposed sensor is configured as, [prism/Au/air cavity/(GaN/SiO2)10]. The main idea of the detection procedure is based on the changes in the levels of isoprene traces as the dry exhaled breath (DEB) fills the cavity layer. The transfer matrix method and the Drude model are adopted to calculate the numerical simulations and reflection spectra of the design. The essential key for sensing isoprene levels is the resonant optical Tamm plasmon (TP) states within the photonic bandgap. The obtained numerical results are investigated for both high and low concentrations of the isoprene trances. Due to the optimization route, the designed sensor could receive a relatively high sensitivity (S) of 0.323 nm/ppm or 300000 nm/RIU. Also, we have obtained a quality factor of 980 for ppm levels and a pronounced value of 5042 for ppb levels. This technique can be reducing the risk of infection during the taking of blood samples by syringe. Finally, the imposed gas sensor here could be of potential interest for monitoring several diseases based on the type and level of the exogenous VOC occurring in the exhaled breath.

Urinary metabolites of multiple volatile organic compounds among general population in Wuhan, central China: Inter-day reproducibility, seasonal difference, and their associations with oxidative stress biomarkers

General population are concurrently and extensively exposed to many volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including some Group 1 human carcinogens, such as 1,3-butadiene. However, only a few studies assessed internal exposure levels of VOCs; particularly, very limited studies have examined associations between the urinary concentrations of multiple VOC metabolites (mVOCs) and oxidative stress biomarkers (OSBs) among the general population. In this study, 21 mVOCs and three OSBs including 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG; for DNA), 8-hydroxyguanosine (8-OHG; for RNA), and 4-hydroxy nonenal mercapturic acid (HNEMA; for lipid) were measured in 406 urine samples collected from 128 healthy adults during autumn and winter of 2018 in Wuhan, central China, including repeated samples taken in 3 d from 75 volunteers. Inter-day reproducibility for most mVOCs was good to excellent; urinary concentrations of mVOCs in winter were generally higher than those in autumn. Risk assessment was conducted by calculating hazard quotients for the parent compounds, and the results suggested that acrolein, 1,3-butadiene, and cyanide should be considered as high-priority hazardous ones for management. After false-discovery adjustment, 16 of the studied mVOCs were positively associated with 8-OHdG and 8-OHG (β values ranged from 0.04 to 0.48), and four mVOCs were positively associated with HNEMA (β values ranged from 0.21 to 0.78). Weighted quantile sum regression analyses were used to assess associations of mVOC mixture and OSBs, and we found significantly positive associations between the mixture index and OSBs, among which the strongest mVOC contributors for the associations were 2-methylhippuric acid for both DNA (20%) and RNA (17%) oxidative damage, and trans,trans-muconic acid (50%) for lipid peroxidation. This study firstly reported good to excellent short-term reproducibility, seasonal difference in autumn and winter, and possible health risk in urinary concentrations of multiple mVOCs among the general population.

Measurement and minutely-resolved source apportionment of ambient VOCs in a corridor city during 2019 China International Import Expo episode

In this study, real-time measurement of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) was conducted at an urban site in Changzhou, a typical corridor city in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in China, by Proton−Transfer−Reaction Time−of−Flight Mass Spectrometry (PTR−ToF−MS) during 2019 China International Import Expo (CIIE) episode. An improved method based on Air Quality Index (AQI) value is applied to identify polluted and clean periods. Diurnal pattern of VOC levels revealed elevated photochemical reactivity during polluted periods. Five VOC sources were identified by Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model, including secondary formation (22.71 ± 12.33%), biogenic (21.50% ± 11.76%), solvent usage (20.50 ± 10.07%), vehicle exhaust (18.32 ± 8.32%), and industrial process and fuel usage (16.96 ± 13.21%). The mean contribution of vehicular exhaust was 10.84% higher during the nighttime than the daytime under polluted days. The biogenic source contributed more during clean periods, while the secondary formation presented the opposite. Spatial analysis displayed that the VOC concentration was higher in the S and SSE. In terms of the regional transport, short-distance air masses from the northeast and the south within the YRD region led to high VOC levels and biogenic VOC derived from the ocean might affect the entire region. Stringent emission control policies enforced over the YRD for 2019 CIIE provided an excellent opportunity to determine the source-receptor response. As joint control area, the VOC level of Changzhou exhibited a substantial reduction and the VOC amounts emitted by solvent usage showed the biggest decrease (−58%). The findings of this study highlight the superiority of high time-resolved data in identifying the dynamic variation pattern (with the change of time and wind) of VOC levels and emission intensities.

The impact of organic pollutants from Indonesian peatland fires on the tropospheric and lower stratospheric composition

Abstract. The particularly strong dry season in Indonesia in 2015, caused by an exceptionally strong El Niño, led to severe peatland fires resulting in high volatile organic compound (VOC) biomass burning emissions. At the same time, the developing Asian monsoon anticyclone (ASMA) and the general upward transport in the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) efficiently transported the resulting primary and secondary pollutants to the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS). In this study, we assess the importance of these VOC emissions for the composition of the lower troposphere and the UTLS and investigate the effect of in-cloud oxygenated VOC (OVOC) oxidation during such a strong pollution event. This is achieved by performing multiple chemistry simulations using the global atmospheric model ECHAM/MESSy (EMAC). By comparing modelled columns of the biomass burning marker hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and carbon monoxide (CO) to spaceborne measurements from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI), we find that EMAC properly captures the exceptional strength of the Indonesian fires. In the lower troposphere, the increase in VOC levels is higher in Indonesia compared to other biomass burning regions. This has a direct impact on the oxidation capacity, resulting in the largest regional reduction in the hydroxyl radical (OH) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). While an increase in ozone (O3) is predicted close to the peatland fires, simulated O3 decreases in eastern Indonesia due to particularly high phenol concentrations. In the ASMA and the ITCZ, the upward transport leads to elevated VOC concentrations in the lower stratosphere, which results in the reduction of OH and NOx and the increase in the hydroperoxyl radical (HO2). In addition, the degradation of VOC emissions from the Indonesian fires becomes a major source of lower stratospheric nitrate radicals (NO3), which increase by up to 20 %. Enhanced phenol levels in the upper troposphere result in a 20 % increase in the contribution of phenoxy radicals to the chemical destruction of O3, which is predicted to be as large as 40 % of the total chemical O3 loss in the UTLS. In the months following the fires, this loss propagates into the lower stratosphere and potentially contributes to the variability of lower stratospheric O3 observed by satellite retrievals. The Indonesian peatland fires regularly occur during El Niño years, and the largest perturbations of radical concentrations in the lower stratosphere are predicted for particularly strong El Niño years. By activating the detailed in-cloud OVOC oxidation scheme Jülich Aqueous-phase Mechanism of Organic Chemistry (JAMOC), we find that the predicted changes are dampened. Global models that neglect in-cloud OVOC oxidation tend to overestimate the impact of such extreme pollution events on the atmospheric composition.

Volatile Organic Compounds Emitted from Air Fresheners

Air fresheners contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), some of which are possible hazardous air pollutants, carcinogens, or chemicals associated with adverse health effects such as asthma. This screening study identifies VOCs emitted from two types of air fresheners. Plug-in air fresheners are household products that release scents from a heated liquid. Little Tree air fresheners are commonly-used solid devices designed to hang in from the rear view mirror in cars. VOCs that were released from heated samples of air fresheners were identified by gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GCMS). In a pilot study to characterize how air fresheners affect air quality in real settings, air samples were collected on solid-phase microextraction (SPME) field samplers in a home setting and inside a vehicle, before and during air-freshener use. This pilot demonstrated the potential for SPME field samplers to track changes in VOC levels in real-life settings.

Airborne volatile organic compounds at an e-waste site in Ghana: Source apportionment, exposure and health risks

Informal e-waste recycling processes emit various air pollutants. While there are a number of pollutants of concern, little information exists on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) releases at e-waste sites. To assess occupational exposures and estimate health risks, we measured VOC levels at the Agbogbloshie e-waste site in Ghana, the largest e-waste site in Africa, by collecting both fixed-site and personal samples for analyzing a wide range of VOCs. A total of 54 VOCs were detected, dominated by aliphatic and aromatic compounds. Mean and median concentrations of the total target VOCs were 46 and 37 μg/m3 at the fixed sites, and 485 and 162 μg/m3 for the personal samples. Mean and median hazard ratios were 2.1 and 1.4, respectively, and cancer risks were 4.6 × 10-4 and 1.5 × 10-4. These risks were predominantly driven by naphthalene and benzene; chloroform and formaldehyde were also high in some samples. Based on the VOC composition, the major sources were industry, fuel evaporation and combustion. The concentration gradient across sites and the similarity of VOC profiles indicated that the e-waste site emissions reached neighboring communities. Our results suggest the need to protect e-waste workers from VOC exposure, and to limit emissions that can expose nearby populations.

Air pollutant emissions from multi jet fusion, material-jetting, and digital light synthesis commercial 3D printers in a service bureau

As additive manufacturing becomes more prevalent in industrial manufacturing facilities, so does human interaction with these machines. In this study, we characterized the size-resolved concentrations of particulate matter (PM, from ≈ 11 to 20,000 nm in size) and volatile organic compounds (VOC) resulting from a material-jetting (Projet 5500X), multi jet fusion (HP MJF 4200), and photopolymerization (Carbon 3D continuous liquid interface production). During all processes, PM concentrations were below the OSHA limits and ultrafine PM (PM0.1) concentrations were well below levels commonly observed for fused deposition modeling printers. PM and total volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations during printing were close to background levels for the HP MJF printer and HP MJF post processing station. However, the mean particle size of the powder used (PA 12) was above the upper detection limit of the instrument (20 μm). Carbon 3D total VOC levels were highest during part post processing. Cyclic PM emissions from the Projet 5500X printer suggested higher PM emissions during cooling fan activity. VOC analysis revealed high concentrations of HP ink solvents (2-Pyrrolidinone and Triethylene glycol), potential exposure to fluorinated compounds and photoresin VOCs during Carbon 3D post-processing, and exposure to photo-resin compounds during Projet 5500X printing. This study indicates that proper exhaust and facility air exchange can limit concentrations of PM and VOCs and therefore particular attention to the building design and ventilation system should be taken into consideration for additive manufacturing facilities to mitigate potential human exposure and associated health risks.

Using an RTIL-Based Electrochemical Sensor Platform for Trace Detection of Heptane As Biomarker for Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is one the most common diseases worldwide with more than 1.6 million dead since 2012 [1]. The survival rate for lung cancer is also very low as the disease is generally diagnosed only at an advanced stage when the treatment is not possible as significant damage has been done [2]. Hence, there is a need for an early and timely non-invasive method for the diagnosis of lung cancer. Previous studies have shown the use of endogenously produced volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as target analytes for the detection of lung cancer. Endogenous VOCs are produced in the bloodstream as result of cellular metabolic pathways involved in maintaining homeostasis[3]. Subsequently, the VOCs diffuse into the alveolar air in the blood-gas interface quickly in the lung because of their low solubility in the blood and they are exhaled out of the lung[4]. Therefore, detection of VOC levels in exhaled breath can be used to study the biochemical pathways that have been altered as a result of tumorigenesis. A breathomics device can be developed and used as a tool for non-invasive, sensitive, and specific detection of lung cancer. Moreover, the presence of lung cancer tumor is not masked by other diseases since every disease has its own volatiles fingerprint[5] , thereby making the detection mechanism specific in nature. Electrochemical sensors are gaining widespread interest as they are robust in nature, have faster response time, and specific and sensitive signal response. Electrochemical gas sensors usually involve a two or three electrode setup that causes change in signal as a function of the output current/potential. Electrochemical sensors require an electrode, a transducer, and an electrolyte. A good electrolyte should have high chemical and electrochemical stability, should be stable at elevated temperatures and have high charge transfer ability. Room temperature ionic liquids (RTIL) are being explored as suitable electrolytes for gas sensing applications as they follow all these parameters. There is an increasing interest in the field of non-invasive disease diagnosis, primarily using breath as a sample for monitoring the presence of various metabolites. Breath alkanes such as heptane can be used as a signature target analyte to differentiate the healthy subjects from lung cancer patients. Levels of heptane in breath for a healthy individual are within 50 ppb-200 ppb range. Concentrations greater than 400 ppb are found in breath as a result of altered metabolic pathways. We demonstrate the proof of concept of an electrochemical VOC sensor specific and sensitive for the detection of heptane up to 400 ppb toward developing a handheld breath analyzer for on-site applicability (Scheme 1). We use RTIL as a transducer and the inherent redox properties of these VOCs such as heptane make them a suitable candidate for electrochemical detection. Moreover, RTILs allow easy removal of VOCs by joule heating and prevent fouling of the system, thereby increasing the shelf life of the sensor.For this study, RTIL Triethylsulfonium Bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide with over 98 percent purity and used as received without any further purification. Trace Source™ disposable permeation tube for Heptane was purchased from KINTEK analytical. Chronoamperometry was used as transduction principle for detection and voltage applied was set within the electrochemical window of the RTIL. An electrochemical sensing platform is developed for the detection of heptane in vapor phase. The sensing platform can be used to monitor the presence of heptane in breath upto 400 ppb (LOD). The sensor showed dose dependent response for the concentrations ranging from 400 ppb to 5 ppm. MO143UTILITY OF SIFT-MS TO EVALUATE VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS IN NEPHROPATHIC PATIENTS' BREATH

Abstract Background and Aims Breath analysis techniques allow detection and quantification of multiple analytes present in breath to the low parts per billion volume (ppbv) level. One such technique is selected ion flow tube–mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS), which can measure numerous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in breath on-line and in real-time. This technique has already been used in an innovative manner to monitor infectious, inflammatory status and metabolic conditions. However, there is no evidence on its use in ambulatory patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). End-stage-renal-disease patients are characterized by "uremic halitosis" caused by the accumulation of uremic toxins that are detectable in breath such as ammonia and amines. The aims of this study are identifying a possible correlation between the detected VOCs and the presence of CKD, moreover, exploring the range of VOCs levels in patients with different CKD stage. Method In the present study, a mobile Voice200ultra® SIFT-MS instrument was made available by the Agilent SRA Division. The SIFT-MS allowed to quantify the VOCs in CKD patients. The SIFT-MS uses a precise and controlled application of “soft” chemical ionization. We enrolled 50 CKD patients, divided into two subgroups according to the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR): eGFR ≥30 mL/min/1.73m2 (A) and eGFR &amp;lt;30 mL/min/1.73m2 (B) compared to 18 healthy subjects (C). The anamnestic data and information about any comorbidities such as arterial hypertension, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, were collected for each patient. In order to reduce the possible interferences in the exhaled composition induced by different lifestyles, all participants were instructed to perform hygienic procedures before the test execution. The exhaled was sampled through the use of a standard spirometry mouthpiece for single use, directly connected with the input probe to the MS detector of the instrument that was able to detect more than 30 VOCs. The processing of the sample was made through the direct use of an internal comparison library (Syft library). The SIFT-MS software instantly calculates the absolute concentration of the target compounds by interpolating mass-to-charge ratios, reaction rate coefficients and branching ratios. Results Among all the VOCs analyzed, the most significant results are observed for ammonia and isoprene. In particular, the ROC curve of ammonia highlighted statistically significant differences between the three subgroups respectively A vs C AUC=0,756 p=0,001; B vs C AUC=0,942 p&amp;lt;0,001; A vs B AUC=0,797 p&amp;lt;0,001 (Figure 1). Youden index J between subgroups B and C defines the best cut-off =0,8704 associated with the criterion ammonia concentration ≤4700 ppbv with sensitivity =94,44% and specificity = 92,59%. The ROC curve of isoprene showed statistically significant differences between the three subgroups respectively B vs C AUC=0,669 p=0,050; A vs B AUC=0,691 p=0,014 (Figure 2). These data allow us to define this a highly accurate test. The same significant results were observed also with Anova one-way test that highlighted an inversely correlation between the ammonia breath concentration and eGFR, and a direct correlation between isoprene and eGFR. Conclusion This preliminary data confirms the potential utility of SIFT-MS for the CKD diagnosis and the possible relation between the VOCs concentration and CKD stage. This exam could be a new, non-invasive, fast-performing diagnostic technique with real-time results useful for clinical management of CKD. Fast and Reliable Multiresidue Analysis of Aromas in Wine by Means of Gas Chromatography Coupled with Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry

The paper would like to show a direct injection into GC-MS/QqQ for the determination of secondary aromas in white wine samples fermented in two different ways. The procedure has been compared with more traditional methods used in this field, i.e., headspace analysis and liquid–liquid extraction. The application of such direct injection, for the first time in the literature, allows us to analyze Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in the range 0.1–100 µg mL−1, with Limits of Detection (LODs) and Limits of Quantification (LOQs) between 0.01–0.05 µg mL−1 and 0.03–0.09 µg mL−1, respectively, intraday and interday below 5.6% and 8.5%, respectively, and recoveries above 92% at two different fortification levels. The procedure has been applied to real wine samples: it evidences how the fermentation in wood (cherry) barrel yields higher VOC levels than ones in wine fermented in steel tank, causing production of different secondary aromas and different relative flavors.

VOCs concentrations and emission rates in hospital environment and the impact of sampling locations

In this study, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured from 47 hospital rooms to determine the most suitable sampling location for VOCs indoors. Another goal was to find out the most predominant VOCs and their emission per floor area in a hospital environment. Three samples were taken from each room simultaneously: one from the center of the room, one from the floor near the wall, and one from the exhaust air terminal. Concentrations of the VOCs were relatively low in all the cases, and the most abundant compounds were decamethylcyclopentasiloxane, d-limonene, xylenes, and 2-methyl-2-propanol. The average emission rates of the main compounds per floor area varied between 49 and 81 µg/m2h. Statistical analyses showed that room area and volume affected differently the total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) concentrations among the sampling locations. Concentrations were higher at the exhaust air terminal than in samples at the floor and middle of the room. VOC levels were the same at the different sampling locations when the size of the room was below 10 m2. However, field measurements and statistical analyses showed that when the size of the room increased, the most evenly distributed VOCs can be measured most reliably in the vicinity of the exhaust terminal device or in the exhaust air.

Joint effects of ethnic enclave residence and ambient volatile organic compounds exposure on risk of gestational diabetes mellitus among Asian/Pacific Islander women in the United States

BackgroundAsian/Pacific Islander (API) communities in the United States often reside in metropolitan areas with distinct social and environmental attributes. Residence in an ethnic enclave, a socially distinct area, is associated with lower gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk, yet exposure to high levels of air pollution, including volatile organic compounds (VOCS), is associated with increased GDM risk. We examined the joint effects of ethnic enclaves and VOCs to better understand GDM risk among API women, the group with the highest prevalence of GDM.MethodsWe examined 9069 API births in the Consortium on Safe Labor (19 hospitals, 2002–2008). API ethnic enclaves were defined as areas ≥66th percentile for percent API residents, dissimilarity (geographic dispersal of API and White residents), and isolation (degree that API individuals interact with another API individual). High levels of 14 volatile organic compounds (VOC) were defined as ≥75th percentile. Four joint categories were created for each VOC: Low VOC/Enclave (reference group), Low VOC/No Enclave, High VOC/Enclave, High VOC/No Enclave. GDM was reported in medical records. Hierarchical logistic regression estimated odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) between joint exposures and GDM, adjusted for maternal factors and area-level poverty. Risk was estimated for 3-months preconception and first trimester exposures.ResultsEnclave residence was associated with lower GDM risk regardless of VOC exposure. Preconception benzene exposure was associated with increased risk when women resided outside enclaves [High VOC/No Enclave (OR:3.45, 95%CI:1.77,6.72)], and the effect was somewhat mitigated within enclaves, [High VOC/Enclave (OR:2.07, 95%:1.09,3.94)]. Risks were similar for 12 of 14 VOCs during preconception and 10 of 14 during the first trimester.ConclusionsAPI residence in non-enclave areas is associated with higher GDM risk, regardless of VOC level. Ethnic enclave residence may mitigate effects of VOC exposure, perhaps due to lower stress levels. The potential benefit of ethnic enclaves warrants further study.
