Rock core VOC profiles diagnostic of aquitard occurrence and integrity in a multi-layered sedimentary rock aquifer flow system

Aquitard assessment poses a challenge for practitioners and researchers managing dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) contaminants in sedimentary rock aquifer systems. Within these systems, DNAPL migration and bulk hydraulic properties are controlled by fracture networks which are difficult to characterize at relevant scales with conventional methods. A previous study at a DNAPL contaminated site used contrasts in high-resolution vertical gradients to delineate four aquitards and two surfaces with poor vertical connectivity within a thick (>200 m) sedimentary rock aquifer system primarily composed of layered sandstones. In this study, we corroborate that method by using the existing DNAPL contamination as a tracer to identify and characterize the aquitards in the sequence and assess aquitard integrity. Closely spaced samples of rock from four continuous cores were collected and analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The cores were collected along a transect perpendicular to groundwater flow and 75 m downgradient of the DNAPL source zone. Dissolved phase contaminant concentrations were collected using high-resolution multilevel systems placed along the plume centerline, downgradient from the source. The rock core and groundwater VOC concentration profiles suggest a primary aquitard limits vertical migration of both DNAPL and the associated dissolved phase contaminants, despite relatively large, downward gradients across its lower boundary. A calibrated, three-dimensional numerical groundwater flow model indicates an anisotropy factor of 1,000 for this aquitard. The Kv values for all four aquitards are only slightly lower than the values for the aquifers. However, the aquitard Kv values are 1–3 orders of magnitude less than their Kh values, and the aquitard Kh values are often similar to or even greater than the Kh values for the aquifers. Therefore, large anisotropy, rather than exceptionally low Kv values, distinguish the aquitards from the aquifers in this system. Fracture network characterization of nearby outcrops showed the anisotropy of the aquitards can be attributed to laterally extensive, bedding parallel partings coupled with short, frequently terminating, and poorly connected vertical fractures. In addition, the rock VOC profiles combined with fracture network data show that fracture termination surfaces can be powerful inhibitors of downward DNAPL migration providing additional evidence for the importance of these features in sedimentary rock flow systems. Ultimately, this study reveals the important influence of anisotropic aquitards on DNAPL migration, accumulation, and persistence, as well as associated plume migration. Furthermore, it demonstrates that subtle contrasts critical to aquitard integrity may be easily missed with long screened wells and other conventional, low resolution site characterization methods.

Insights into air flowrate distribution and benzene removal in the heterogeneous aquifer during surfactant-enhanced air sparging

Surfactant-enhanced air sparging (SEAS) is an effective method of remediating volatile organic compounds in groundwater. In this study, the airflow migration mechanism and benzene removal in a heterogeneous aquifer during air sparging (AS) and SEAS remediation were studied using a light transmission visualisation technology. The blocking effect of the heterogeneous geological interface on airflow clearly decreased owing to the surfactant injection. At a surfactant concentration of 800 mg/L, the ΔPe value (i.e., the air entry pressure difference of the media above and below the interface) decreased from 0.3 kPa to 0.1 kPa. After surfactant injection, there was obvious downward migration owing to gravity. Compared with AS, the lateral migration of airflow at the interface and the fingered distribution of air flowrate above the interface improved considerably during SEAS, which increased the total benzene removal rates from 0.624 to 0.979. Moreover, the spatial distribution of the surfactant changed due to prolonged AS, which decreased the zone of influence area and airflow distribution range. However, the surfactant redistribution further enhanced the rectangular distribution of air flowrate, which was beneficial for continuous benzene removal in the low-permeability zone above the interface. These findings are useful for further understanding remediation mechanisms and optimising the technological parameters of SEAS technology in layered heterogeneous aquifer.

Volatile organic compounds in groundwater used for public supply across the United States: Occurrence, explanatory factors, and human-health context

This systematic assessment of occurrence for 85 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in raw (untreated) groundwater used for public supply across the United States (U.S.), which includes 43 compounds not previously monitored by national studies, relates VOC occurrence to explanatory factors and assesses VOC detections in a human-health context. Samples were collected in 2013 through 2019 from 1537 public-supply wells in aquifers representing 78% of the volume pumped for public drinking-water supply. Laboratory detection limits for VOCs generally were less than 0.1 μg/L. Detections were reported for 36% of the sampled principal-aquifer area (38% of sampled wells) and were most common in wells in shallow, unconfined aquifers in urban areas that produce high proportions of modern-age and oxic groundwater. The disinfection by-product trichloromethane (chloroform) was the most commonly detected VOC associated primarily with anthropogenic sources (24% of the sampled area, 25% of sampled wells), followed by the gasoline oxygenate methyl tert-butyl ether (8.4% of area, 11% of wells). Carbon disulfide (12% of area, 14% of wells) was examined separately because of likely substantial contributions from natural sources. Newly monitored VOCs were each detected in <1% of the sampled area. Although detections of 1,4-dioxane in this first national study of its occurrence in raw groundwater were rare, measured concentrations exceeded the most stringent (non-enforceable) human-health benchmark in 0.5% of the sampled area (9 wells). Two wells had exceedances of enforceable benchmarks for tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene, and 50 wells total (representing 2.0% of the sampled area, 3.3% of sampled wells) had combined VOC concentrations exceeding 10% of benchmarks of any type. Compared with previous national findings, this study reports lower rates of VOC detection, but confirms widespread anthropogenic influence on groundwater used for public supply, with relatively few concentrations of individual VOCs or mixtures that approach or exceed human-health benchmarks.

Passive membrane sampler for assessing VOCs contamination in unsaturated and saturated media

Passive sampling (PS) is a method employed to detect volatile organic compounds in groundwater and soil gas. This study attempted to manufacture a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dialysis passive sampler for potential application in detecting trichloroethylene (TCE) in aqueous and gaseous phases. The equilibrium time of the passive sampler was initially determined, followed by multilayer passive sampling in a three-dimensional sandbox to construct a tomography of TCE vapor spatial distribution in the vadose zone above the saturated water level. The results indicated that an equilibrium time period of >10 d was required in the aqueous phase containing TCE concentrations ranging from 3 to 25 mg L−1, while an equilibrium time period of >12 d was necessary for TCE vapor concentrations ranging from 2.6–26 mg L−1. Therefore, a 14 d of equilibrium time was suggested for application of this passive sampler in detecting vapor and aqueous phase TCE. After collection of the passive samples from the three-dimensional sandbox, a three dimensional visualization was created, and it was demonstrated to be a reasonable way to simulate a three dimensional TCE distribution. It was confirmed that the passive sampler developed in this study is effective for assessing TCE contamination in the subsurface.

White and Red Brazilian São Simão's Kaolinite-TiO2 Nanocomposites as Catalysts for Toluene Photodegradation from Aqueous Solutions.

The presence of volatile organic compounds in groundwater is a major concern when it is used as a drinking water source because many of these compounds can adversely affect human health. This work reports on the preparation and characterization of white and red Brazilian São Simão’s kaolinite-TiO2 nanocomposites and their use as catalysts in the photochemical degradation of toluene, a significant volatile organic compound. The nanocomposites were prepared by a sol-gel procedure, using titanium bis(triethanolaminate)diisopropoxide as a precursor. Thermal treatments of the nanocomposites led to different polymorphic titania phases, while the clay changed from kaolinite to metakaolinite. This structural evolution strongly affected the photocatalytic degradation behavior—all the solids efficiently degraded toluene and the solid calcined at 400 °C, formed by kaolinite and anatase, showed the best behavior (90% degradation). On extending the photochemical treatment up to 48 h, high mineralization levels were reached. The advantage of photodegradation using the nanocomposites was confirmed by comparing the results from isolated components (titanium dioxide and kaolinite) to observe that the nanocomposites displayed fundamental importance to the photodegradation pathways of toluene.

A Review on Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) as Environmental Pollutants: Fate and Distribution

VOCs include a variety of organic chemicals emitted as gases from certain solids and liquids. The nature and extent of these health effects depend on the concentration levels of these VOCs and the duration of their exposure and pose adverse health effects to humans. Although VOCs are found in a variety of industrial, commercial and household products; it is their concentration in wells and groundwater that has gained attention in recent years. When VOCs are spilled or improperly disposed of, a portion of it after evaporation are soaked on the ground, which eventually reaches wells and groundwater. Drinking of inadequately treated VOCs contaminated groundwater is potentially harmful to human beings. Trichloroethylene and vinyl chloride are most toxic and carcinogenic among all VOCs. The present paper reviews the sources, health risks, transport and fate of these VOCs in groundwater. Besides, analytical methods for the detection of VOCs in groundwater and techniques for mitigation of VOCs from groundwater have also been discussed.

Multiple lines of field evidence to inform fracture network connectivity at a shale site contaminated with dense non-aqueous phase liquids

AbstractConceptual models of the fracture networks in shale were evaluated at a site contaminated with chlorinated solvents. Prior borehole testing in eight holes under open hole ambient and pumping conditions identified 14 flow zones (140 m bedrock interval) with zero to five zones per hole. Cross-hole testing showed only a few cross-connections between transmissive fractures. The initial conceptual model thus featured a sparse fracture network with few dominant fractures. Detailed profiles (hydraulic head, rock core volatile organic compounds, groundwater volatile organic compounds from packer and multi-level sampling, cross-hole multi-level monitoring of permanganate injections) were collected from several holes and indicated a well-connected fracture network with many hydraulically active fractures not influenced by open hole cross-connection. This contrasting conceptual model contained numerous well-connected horizontal and vertical fractures that allowed chlorinated solvents to penetrate the upper 50–60 m of bedrock as dense non-aqueous phase liquids, followed by diffusion-driven mass transfer from fractures into the porous rock matrix, such that nearly all the contaminant mass resided as dissolved and sorbed phases, measurable in rock core without cross-contamination during drilling. The difference in the two conceptual models has important implications for source zone and plume attenuation.

In-situ Chemical Oxidation for Volatile Organic Compounds Removal in Groundwater: A Pilot-scale Study

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) contamination in groundwater was a widespread environmental problem and potential threat to public health and safety in adjacent areas. A pilot study of in-situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO) for VOCs removal was demonstrated in a retired pesticide factory, with an in-situ injection system complied with 40 injection wells system. The average concentration of benzene and 4-chlorotoluene in the plume decreased by 54.19% and 58.02% respectively, after nine rounds of injection treatment with a total of approximately 34 tons of hydrogen peroxide. The results indicate that ISCO is an effective remediation alternative of VOCs in groundwater.

Nitrate Remediation: The Importance of the Advanced Nitrogen Cycle in Remedy Selection

Nitrate has become an increased regulatory concern due to gradual deterioration of surface and groundwater quality primarily related to widespread fertilizer use. Remediation of nitrate is a relatively straightforward process; however, nitrate impacts to groundwater are often a symptom of a sustained source from another nitrogen form (e.g., ammonia, ammonium nitrate, urea), analogous to how nonaqueous phase liquid can serve as a long‐term source of volatile organic compounds in groundwater. Understanding the various nitrogen transformation reactions when selecting, implementing, or documenting a remedy associated with nitrate is therefore critical to successfully reaching remedial endpoints. Case studies are presented that highlight in situ remedial successes with nitrogen‐impacted groundwater and discuss the key considerations that should be factored into remedy application. ©2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Lab and field screening of 5 selected passive samplers for the measurement of VOC fluxes in groundwater

The prospects and limitations of direct flux measurement of volatile organic compounds in groundwater with 5 selected passive samplers, currently available or self-constructible, are screened in a series of lab and field experiments. The selection of the 5 samplers for the practical experiments is based on the review of current passive samplers for the measurement of organic contaminants in water (Verreydt et al., 2010). The MESCO sampler and ceramic dosimeter were subjected to a batch lab screening experiment, while the passive flux meter, the sorbi sampler, the passive diffusion bag sampler and the ceramic dosimeter were installed in a monitoring well at a field site. The passive flux meter has proven to be the only passive sampler which effectively determines VOC mass fluxes. The ceramic dosimeter produced time- averaged concentration data comparable to traditional sampling data and can be used for long-term monitoring. The sorbi sampler also produced results which are more or less similar to traditional sampling data, but is not eligible for a long-term practice. The passive diffusion bag sampler has shown to be a reliable equilibrium sampler, but is not suitable for the determination of mass fluxes. The MESCO sampler has the poorest physical robustness and is therefore not suitable for long-term application in a groundwater monitoring well.

Investigation of the Migration of Selected Volatile Organic Compounds in Groundwater under an Unlined Landfill

Historical data over an 18-year-period were examined in this study in order to determine the significance and impact of an unlined landfill on groundwater. A series of constituents historically and currently detected at an unlined landfill were selected for this investigation. The data indicate that there have been a substantial decrease in the concentration of VOCs after the implementation and operation of a pump and treat system that was required by governing state agencies in a site remediation effort. The results and findings of this research indicate that the pump and treat method and the landfill gas extraction system at the Chestnut Avenue Landfill properly contained the contamination plume. All constituents detected at the site have not been detected since 2005, except that of Trichloroethene, which has been detected until recently at low concentrations.It is suggested that a different form of remediation be proposed, as the pump and treat system has been as effective as possible and further remediation of the one remaining constituent may be infeasible.

Determination of VOCs in groundwater at an industrial contamination site using a homemade low-density polyethylene passive diffusion sampler

A home-made inexpensive passive diffusion bag (PDB) sampler, prepared by filling deionized water in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) tubes, was evaluated for volatile organic compounds (VOC) sampling in groundwater at industrial contamination sites. Impacts of environmentally relevant conditions on the sampling equilibration time and partitioning of VOCs between the sampler and the water sample were investigated. Sample salinity, agitation and temperature can influence the equilibration time, but generally sampling equilibration was obtained in 14 days under real field sampling of VOCs in groundwater. Both laboratory study and field testing in a contaminated site showed that the VOC concentrations in the developed sampler were equal to those in the water samples at equilibrium. Coupled with a purge and trap concentrator-gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (P&T-GC-MS), the developed PDB sampler provided a low-cost sampling device for routine monitoring of VOCs in groundwater in wells, with LODs in the range of 2.9–10 μg/L. The proposed PDB was applied to determine VOCs in groundwater at an industrial contamination site, and the present results agreed well with those determined using conventional pump-and-sample monitoring. All the studied 13 VOCs were tested in the four wells in the industrial contamination sites, with their concentrations in the range of 12–73660 μg/L. In addition, while benzene and toluene were heavily contaminated up to a maximum concentration of 74000 μg/L and 6000 μg/L, respectively, 1,2,3-trichlorobenzene and bromobenzene had relatively low contamination levels (below 25 μg/L).

Geochemical indicators of contamination by volatile organic compounds in groundwater on Lucaia's River Basin, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. This work investigated the groundwater contamination of the Lucaia's River Basin, Salvador, Brazil, for petroleum hydrocarbons leaking from fuel tanks. The concentrations of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes ― BTEX ―, sulfate, nitrate and iron (II) was determined in 17 samples of groundwater. The concentration of BTEX ranged from 0.2 to 185.7 µg.L -1 and the concentrations of sulfate, nitrate and iron (II) were correlated with levels of BTEX undergoing natural degradation. In only two points BTEX levels were observed far above the permitted by CONAMA Resolution no 396/2008, while the others were below the detection limit.

Screening of Emerging Volatile Organic Contaminants in Shallow Groundwater in East China

In order to collect baseline information on the environmental occurrence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in groundwater in East China, shallow groundwater samples were collected from five alluvial plains in East China in 2008 to 2009. All samples were analyzed for 54 VOCs representing a wide variety of uses and origins. Sampling sites were mainly selected in the areas to be susceptible to contamination from human activities in terms of previous hydrogeological survey. The data of all samples showed a variety of different hydrogeological systems with potential sources of VOCs, with 36 of the 54 VOCs being found. The most frequently detected compounds include naphthalene (56.9%), chloroform (16.9%), 1,2‐dichloroethane (16.2%), 1,2‐dichloropropane (13.1%), and 1,2,3‐trichlorobenzene (12.3%). The concentrations of methylene chloride, 1,2‐dichloroethane, carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethene, 1,2‐dichloropropane, and tetrachloroethene exceeded the relating drinking water standards. Future work will be needed to identify those factors that are most important in determining the occurrence and concentrations of VOCs in groundwater in China.

Risk assessment of exposure to volatile organic compounds in groundwater in Taiwan

The purpose of this study is to assess the risks from exposure to 14 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in selected groundwater sites in Taiwan. The study employs the multimedia environment pollutant assessment system (MEPAS) model to calculate the specific non-cancer and cancer risks at an exposure level of 1 μg/L of each VOC for a variety of exposure pathways. The results show that the highest specific non-cancer risk is associated with water ingestion of vinyl chloride (VC) and that the highest specific cancer risk is associated with indoor breathing of VC. The three most important exposure pathways for risk assessment for both non-cancer and cancer risks are identified as water ingestion, dermal absorption when showering, and indoor breathing. Excess tetrachloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), dichloroethylene (DCE), and VC are detected in the groundwater aquifers of one dump site and one factory. However, the study suggests that the pollutants in the contaminated groundwater aquifers do not travel extensively with groundwater flow and that the resulting VOC concentrations are below detectable levels for most of the sampled drinking-water treatment plants. Nevertheless, the non-cancer and cancer risks resulting from use of the contaminated groundwater are found to be hundred times higher than the general risk guidance values. To ensure safe groundwater utilisation, remediation initiatives for soil and groundwater are required. Finally, the study suggests that the current criteria for VOCs in drinking water might not be capable of ensuring public safety when groundwater is used as the primary water supply; more stringent quality criteria for drinking water are proposed for selected VOCs.

Low-Level Detections of Halogenated Volatile Organic Compounds in Groundwater: Use in Vulnerability Assessments

Concentrations of halogenated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were determined by gas chromatography (GC) with an electron-capture detector (GC-ECD) and by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in 109 groundwater samples from five study areas in the United States. In each case, the untreated water sample was used for drinking-water purposes or was from a monitoring well in an area near a drinking-water source. The minimum detection levels (MDLs) for 25 VOCs that were identified in GC-ECD chromatograms, typically, were two to more than four orders of magnitude below the GC-MS MDLs. At least six halogenated VOCs were detected in all of the water samples analyzed by GC-ECD, although one or more VOCs were detected in only 43% of the water samples analyzed by GC-MS. Occurrence of Volatile Organic Compounds in Aquifers of the United States1

Abstract: Samples of ambient ground water were collected during 1985‐2002 from 3,498 wells in 98 aquifer studies throughout the United States. None of the sampled wells were selected because of prior knowledge of nearby contamination. Most of these samples were analyzed for 55 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to characterize their national occurrence. Volatile organic compounds were found in samples collected from 90 of the 98 aquifer studies. Occurrence frequencies of one or more VOCs for the 98 aquifer studies ranged from 0 to about 77% at an assessment level of 0.2 microgram per liter (μg/l). The aquifer studies with the largest occurrence frequencies were in southern Florida, southern New York, southern California, New Jersey, and Nevada. Trihalomethanes and solvents were the most frequently occurring VOC groups. Of the 55 VOCs included in this assessment, 42 occurred in at least one sample at an assessment level of 0.2 μg/l. Chloroform, perchloroethene, and methyl tert‐butyl ether were the most frequently occurring VOCs. Many factors, such as the hydrogeology of the aquifer, use of VOCs, land use, and the transport and fate properties of VOCs, affect the occurrence of VOCs in ground water.

Occurrence and Potential Human-Health Relevance of Volatile Organic Compounds in Drinking Water from Domestic Wells in the United States

BackgroundAs the population and demand for safe drinking water from domestic wells increase, it is important to examine water quality and contaminant occurrence. A national assessment in 2006 by the U.S. Geological Survey reported findings for 55 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) based on 2,401 domestic wells sampled during 1985–2002.ObjectivesWe examined the occurrence of individual and multiple VOCs and assessed the potential human-health relevance of VOC concentrations. We also identified hydrogeologic and anthropogenic variables that influence the probability of VOC occurrence.MethodsThe domestic well samples were collected at the wellhead before treatment of water and analyzed for 55 VOCs. Results were used to examine VOC occurrence and identify associations of multiple explanatory variables using logistic regression analyses. We used a screening-level assessment to compare VOC concentrations to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) and health-based screening levels.ResultsWe detected VOCs in 65% of the samples; about one-half of these samples contained VOC mixtures. Frequently detected VOCs included chloroform, toluene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, and perchloroethene. VOC concentrations generally were < 1 μg/L. One or more VOC concentrations were greater than MCLs in 1.2% of samples, including dibromochloropropane, 1,2-dichloropropane, and ethylene dibromide (fumigants); perchloroethene and trichloroethene (solvents); and 1,1-dichloroethene (organic synthesis compound).ConclusionsDrinking water supplied by domestic wells is vulnerable to low-level VOC contamination. About 1% of samples had concentrations of potential human-health concern. Identifying factors associated with VOC occurrence may aid in understanding the sources, transport, and fate of VOCs in groundwater.

Factors Associated with Sources, Transport, and Fate of Volatile Organic Compounds and Their Mixtures in Aquifers of the United States

Factors associated with sources, transport, and fate of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in groundwater from aquifers throughout the United States were evaluated using statistical methods. Samples were collected from 1631 wells throughout the conterminous United States between 1996 and 2002 as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program of the U.S. Geological Survey. Water samples from wells completed in aquifers used to supply drinking water were analyzed for more than 50 VOCs. Wells were primarily rural domestic water supplies (1184), followed by public water supplies (216); the remaining wells (231) supplied a variety of uses. The median well depth was 50 meters. Age-date information shows that about 60% of the samples had a fraction of water recharged after 1953. Chloroform, toluene, 1,2,4-trimethyl-benzene, and perchloroethene were some of the frequently detected VOCs. Concentrations generally were less than 1 microg/L. Source factors include, in order of importance, general land-use activity, septic/sewer density, and sites where large concentrations of VOCs are potentially released, such as leaking underground storage tanks. About 10% of all samples had VOC mixtures that were associated with concentrated sources; 20% were associated with dispersed sources. Important transport factors included well/screen depth, precipitation/groundwater recharge, air temperature, and various soil characteristics. Dissolved oxygen was strongly associated with VOCs and represents the fate of many VOCs in groundwater. Well type (domestic or public water supply) was also an important explanatory factor. Results of multiple analyses show the importance of (1) accounting for both dispersed and concentrated sources of VOCs, (2) measuring dissolved oxygen when sampling wells to help explain the fate of VOCs, and (3) limiting the type of wells sampled in monitoring networks to avoid unnecessary variance in the data, or controlling for this variance during data analysis.
