Abatement of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and Fluorine gases by a Microwave Plasma Torch (MPT)

The use of microwave plasma torch (MPT) in the abatement of potent greenhouse and fluorinated (F-gases) gases is crucial due to their high global warming potential. The purpose of this study was the abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbon tetrafluoride (CF4) using specifically designed reverse vortex flow reactor (RVR) and pillar of fire reactor (POF). The RVR has properties that are crucial for their synergistic effects with the MPT, and the POF configurations showed high-efficiency combustion due to plasma radicals and a large contact area with the MPT. The study used Aspen Plus and COMSOL software to analyse the mass balance involved in the thermal decomposition of isopropyl alcohol (C₃H₈O) and CF4 and to design the RVR and POF reactors. Using MPT without hydrocarbon fuel, low-concentration C₃H₈O and CF4 were successfully destroyed in high-flow streams. The experiment on C₃H₈O showed that using a plasma power of 2kW and 1 cubic meter per minute (CMM) of bulk gas, a destruction removal efficiency (DRE) of 95% was achieved for a polluted C₃H₈O of 410 ppm. In a second experiment, a DRE of 94% was achieved for a polluted C₃H₈O of 370 ppm. The first CF4 experiment achieved a DRE of 93.3% with a 7kW plasma power and 1 CMM bulk gas polluted at 285 ppm. In the second experiment, the presence of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (OH⁎) in steam plasma improved the DRE to 99.8% at 7kW plasma power and 100 LPM bulk polluted at 180 ppm.

Evaluation of the performance of new plastic packing materials from plastic waste in biotrickling filters for odour removal

The gas emissions from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) contain multiple chemical compounds, such as H2S, NH3 and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can cause odour nuisance and health hazards. Biological technologies, such as biotrickling filters (BTFs), are preferred due to their cost-effectiveness and eco-friendliness. The selection of the packing materials in these bioreactors is crucial due to their high purchase cost, frequent replacement and impact on the gas-liquid mass transfer. This research aims at evaluating the NH3, H2S and VOC abatement performance of novel packing materials from plastic byproducts from the water cycle at different gas residence times (EBRT). The experimental set-up consisted of three BTFs of 2 L of working volume constructed with three different packing materials: commercial Pall rings (control), recycled plastic (from bottle caps), and extruded recycled plastic materials in the form of an optimised 3D-printed carrier. The three BTFs supported a complete removal of H2S and NH3 at EBRTs of 30, 15, 10 and 6 s, and VOCs removal above 90 % at EBRTs of 30 and 15 s. The extruded recycled plastic materials in the form of optimised 3D-printed carrier supported toluene and α-pinene removals of 100 % at EBRTs of 30 and 15 s. The genus Thiobacillus was identified in the three BTFs. This research confirmed the potential of reused and recycled plastics from the integral water cycle as a packing material in BTFs devoted to odour treatment.

Oxidation of Airborne m-Xylene in Pulsed Corona Discharge: Impact of Water Sprinkling

Plasma from electric discharges can be used in the abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The application of gas-phase pulsed corona discharge (PCD) in air–water mixtures provides favorable conditions for the oxidation of VOCs at unsurpassed energy efficiency. This research investigates the impact of water sprinkling on PCD performance in the oxidation of m-xylene as a model compound. Experimental research into the plasma treatment of continuous air flow was undertaken using the PCD reactor in dry and water-sprinkled modes. Water sprinkling more than doubled the m-xylene oxidation rate, which can be attributed to abundant OH-radicals produced at the plasma–water interface. Water sprinkling substantially reduced the formation of nitrous oxide, which is considered to be a secondary pollutant in the outlet air. Ozone is considered a by-product helping the subsequent photocatalytic oxidation of potential residues and photocatalyst maintenance. The use of water-sprinkled PCD is a promising approach to energy-efficient abatement of VOCs.

Multi-channel capillary bioreactor for hydrophobic VOC and CO2 abatement – Process intensification through silicone oil addition

A multi-channel capillary bioreactor devoted to the continuous abatement of hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by a bacterial and bacterial/microalgae consortium was investigated for 200 days. Toluene, α-pinene and hexane removal in the capillary bioreactor was up to 99 %, 98 %, and 55 %, respectively, which is remarkably high considering the low gas contact time of less than 1 second. Addition of silicone oil increased the removal efficiency (RE) of α-pinene within two days from 45 ± 6 % to 98 ± 2 %, probably through alleviation of biokinetic inhibition provided by the oil acting as buffer for the α-pinene and/or its metabolites. The RE of toluene increased after silicone oil addition over a period of about eight weeks from 81 ± 3 % to 99 ± 1 %, most likely via microbial adaptation. On the contrary, the removal of hexane did not increase following silicone oil addition, potentially due to the inhibition of hexane or its metabolites as the bioreactor was deliberately operated without replenishing the recirculation liquid. Interestingly, biomass adhered to the silicone oil phase rather than residing in the water phase. The bacterial diversity was substantially enhanced, and probably contributed to the observed stable performance of the capillary bioreactor. After the introduction of microalgae on day 150, lower CO2 concentrations at the outlet compared to the inlet were observed immediately. A net CO2 consumption was recorded, achieving complete carbon sequestration from the removed VOCs, along with additional CO2 removed from the inlet ambient air.

Effect of surfactant type and concentration on the gas-liquid mass transfer in biotrickling filters used for air pollution control

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted into the atmosphere negatively affect the environment and human health. Biotrickling filtration, an effective technology for treating VOC-laden waste gases, faces challenges in removing hydrophobic VOCs due to their low water solubility and therefore limited bioavailability to microorganisms. Consequently, the addition of (bio)surfactants has proven to be a promising strategy to enhance the removal of hydrophobic VOCs in biotrickling filters (BTFs). Yet, up to now, no single study has ever performed a mass transfer characterization of a BTF under (bio)surfactants addition. In this study, the effect of (bio)surfactant addition on the gas-liquid mass transfer characteristics of two BTFs was measured by using oxygen (O2) as a model gas. Through an empirical correlation, the mass transfer coefficients (kLa) of two hydrophobic VOCs, toluene and hexane, which are of industrial and environmental significance, were estimated. One BTF was filled with expanded perlite, while the other with a mixture of compost and wood chips (C + WC). Both BTFs were operated under different liquid velocities (UL: 0.95 and 1.53 m h−1). Saponin, a biological surfactant, and Tween 80, a synthetic surfactant, were added to the recirculating liquid at different critical micelle concentrations (CMCs: 0–3 CMC). The higher interfacial and surface area of the perlite BTF compared to the C + WC BTF led to higher kLaO2 values regardless of the operational condition: 308 ± 18–612 ± 19 h−1 versus 42 ± 4–177 ± 24 h−1, respectively. Saponin addition at 0.5 and 1 CMC had positive effects on the perlite BTF, with kLaO2 values two times higher compared to those at 0 CMC. Tween 80 exhibited a neutral or slightly positive effect on the mass transfer of both BTFs under all conditions. Overall, the CMC, along with the physical characteristics of the packing materials and the operational conditions evaluated explained the results obtained. This study provides fundamental data essential to improve the performance and design of BTFs for hydrophobic VOCs abatement.

Electrochemical biofilter enhances performance of volatile organic compounds abatement

ABSTRACT An electrochemical biofilter (EBF) was developed for enhancing the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through current. The removal efficiency (RE) of toluene exhibited a notable increase of 15% while the biomass growth rate exhibited a corresponding decline of 46% under an optimal current intensity of 50 mA. Meanwhile, the efficacy of the EBF system was markedly enhanced upon the removal of n-hexane, styrene, dichloromethane, and diisobutylene. The results indicated that there was an 11% to 49% increase in RE and a 0% to 64% reduction in biomass growth rates under the influence of the current. The current stimulation inhibited the accumulation of microorganisms, thereby alleviating biofilm clogging. The relative abundance of gram-positive phyla, including Firmicutes and Actinobacteria, increased by 15% and 23%, respectively, while the traditionally dominant genera within the Proteobacteria phylum, such as Rhodococcus and Dokdonella, exhibited a decline. In addition, the presence of hydrogen peroxide, free chlorine, and superoxides in the leachate indicated that the oxidative reaction increased in EBF system. This study provides an attractive pathway for current stimulation to enhance degradation of VOCs and alleviate biofilm clogging.

Analysis of Ozone and VOCs Pollution Characteristics, Sources, and Abatement Control Strategies in Hebi

In order to control the increasing ozone （O3） pollution in Hebi, Henan Province, clarifying the pollution characteristics of ozone and its precursors is vital. Therefore, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of O3 pollution utilizing the OFP-PMF-EKMA method combined with online hourly resolution monitoring data of conventional pollutants and volatile organic compounds （VOCs） in the summer of 2022 （June-September）. Ozone formation potential （OFP） was used to identify the key VOCs species, and the PMF model was used to identify the VOCs emission sources, whereas EKMA curves and scenario analysis were used to identify the main ozone control area in Hebi and to determine the reduction ratio of VOCs and NOx in a scientifically refined way. In 2022, Hebi had persistent O3 pollution, with the highest concentration in June. Conditions of high temperature, low humidity, and low atmospheric pressure contributed to the O3 accumulation. Aromatic and oxygenated volatile organic compounds （OVOCs） contributed significantly to the OFP and VOCs fraction, which were the dominant active substance and concentration dominant species. The results of the VOCs source analysis indicated that vehicle exhaust sources （25.3%） were the main source of atmospheric VOCs, followed by process sources （17.7%） and biomass combustion sources （17.6%）. Thus, emission sources associated with the combustion of fossil fuels and industrial production emissions were the most urgent sources of atmospheric VOCs to be controlled in Hebi. The O3 generation in Hebi occurred in the VOCs-sensitive zones, and the emission reduction results showed that a synergistic emission reduction of VOCs and nitrogen oxide （NOx） could effectively control O3 pollution with a 75% reduction in VOCs and a 10% reduction in NOx.

Boosting Pt utilization via strategic Co Integration: Structural and mechanistic investigation of High-Performance Pt-Co alloy nanocatalysts for catalytic benzene combustion

Platinum (Pt)-based catalysts exhibit notable efficacy in reducing emissions of hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as benzene. Nevertheless, the high cost and limited availability of Pt necessitate exploring reasonable strategies to optimize Pt utilization and enhance catalytic efficiency. Thus, pressing needs emerge to develop efficient Pt-based catalysts. This study investigates the catalytic combustion of benzene utilizing an antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) supported platinum-cobalt (Pt-Co) alloy catalyst. The incorporation of cobalt into Pt nanoparticles leads to Co atoms occupying bulk sites in the Pt-Co alloy, elevating the surface exposure of Pt atoms and enriching Pt on the surface, thereby providing additional active sites for catalysis. Advanced characterization techniques provide critical insights into the morphology, size distribution, crystallinity and valence states of Pt upon strategic Co alloying. Pt-Co/ATO exhibits exceptional low-temperature activity, achieving 95 % benzene conversion at 170 °C, which is 30 °C lower than the 200 °C required for Pt/ATO. Pressure-dependent kinetic analysis reveals a Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism involving the co-adsorption of benzene and oxygen reactants on active Pt-Co alloy sites. This study contributes insights into tuning bimetallic alloy nanostructures to optimize noble metal utilization and catalytic performance for VOC abatement, establishing a foundation for advancing sustainable emissions control technology.

Synergistic doping and de-doping of Co3O4 catalyst for effortless formaldehyde oxidation

The pursuit of high-performance non-precious metal catalysts for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) abatement is paramount in meeting stringent environmental regulations. In this study, we present a groundbreaking approach by crafting a highly defective Co3O4 catalyst through a strategic process involving Mg doping and subsequent partial de-doping. The catalyst exhibited an exceptional activity in the oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO), achieving a remarkable conversion rate of 2.92 μmol·m−2·h−1, which is 3.1 times that of the pristine Co3O4 at 100 °C and an HCHO space velocity of 75,000 mL·g−1·h−1. Our methodology involves a dual-action process of doping and de-doping, orchestrating the introduction of significant structural and surface defects. These include surface cracks, lattice distortions, cationic vacancies, oxygen vacancies, lower metal coordination, and more. This orchestrated creation of defects serves to amplify the generation of active oxygen sites, thereby enhancing the intrinsic oxidative ability of the catalyst. The net result is a lowered activation energy barrier for HCHO, further contributing to the catalyst performance enhancement. This study not only establishes a new benchmark for Co3O4 catalysis but also provides insightful paradigms for the role of defects engineering in promoting non-noble metal-catalyzed volatile organic compounds oxidation.

The impact of multi-decadal changes in VOC speciation on urban ozone chemistry: a case study in Birmingham, United Kingdom

Abstract. Anthropogenic non-methane volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the United Kingdom have been substantially reduced since 1990, which is, in part, attributed to controls on evaporative and vehicle tailpipe emissions. Over time, other sources with a different speciation (for example, alcohols from solvent use and industry processes) have grown in both relative importance and, in some cases, in absolute terms. The impact of this change in speciation and the resulting photochemical reactivities of VOCs are evaluated using a photochemical box model constrained by observational data during a summertime ozone event (Birmingham, UK) and apportionment of sources based on the UK National Atmospheric Emission Inventory (NAEI) data over the period 1990–2019. Despite road transport sources representing only 3.3 % of UK VOC emissions in 2019, road transport continued being the sector with the largest influence on the local O3 production rate (P(O3)). Under case study conditions, the 96 % reduction in road transport VOC emissions that has been achieved between 1990 and 2019 has likely reduced daytime P(O3) by ∼ 1.67 ppbv h−1. Further abatement of fuel fugitive emissions was modeled to have had less impact on P(O3) reduction than abatement of VOCs from industrial processes and solvent use. The long-term trend of increased emissions of ethanol and methanol has somewhat weakened the benefits of reducing road transport emissions, increasing P(O3) by ∼ 0.19 ppbv h−1 in the case study. Abatement of VOC emissions from multiple sources has been a notable technical and policy success in the UK, but some future benefits (from an ozone perspective) of the phase-out of internal combustion engine passenger cars may be offset if domestic and commercial solvent use of VOCs continue to increase.

Effect of the component and the concentration ratio on the removal of volatile organic compound mixtures by non-thermal plasma

The feasibility and efficiency of the degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by non-thermal plasma (NTP) has been extensive investigated and proved in laboratory experiments with single target component. In practical, multicomponent VOCs are emitted during industrial production. It is urgent need to study the abatement of multicomponent VOCs to evaluate the effectiveness of NTP technology in application, and explore the impact of interactions between VOCs components on degradation efficiency. This study focused on the degradation of VOCs mixtures composed of toluene (TOL), acetone (AC), and ethyl acetate (EA) by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma in room temperature. Through changing the target gas in turn and the concentration ratio of additive gas in binary mixture, the influence of the composition and the concentration ratio of the additive gases on the target gas degradation have been investigated by comparing the decomposition of the single compound. The results showed that AC and EA had little or no inhibitory effect on degradation of TOL. When AC was added and degraded together with TOL, the degradation rate of TOL remained almost unchanged with slight fluctuations in the range of 75.3 ± 1.0% as the ratio of added AC increased. However, TOL significantly inhibited the degradation of EA and AC, and more seriously on AC. When the ratio of added TOL increased, the degradation rates of EA or AC changed from 41.1% or 34.5% to 29.8% or 12.2%, which were 11.3% or 22.3% reduced respectively. It is indicated that there was a mutual inhibitory effect between the AC and EA when they were degraded together, and a stronger inhibitory effect of EA on AC was observed. When the ratio of added AC to EA changed from 0:1 to 3:1, the degradation rate of EA decreased by 9.5%, from 49.8% to 40.3%. When the ratio of added EA to AC changed from 0:1 to 3:1, the degradation rate of AC decreased by 16.0%, from 37.9% to 21.9%.

3D monolithic composites TiO2/HKUST-1/RGO@melamine foam with improved surface mass transfer for efficient photocatalytic degradation of toluene gas

Currently, photocatalytic technology mostly uses powdered TiO2 catalysts, which are not conducive to recycling, limit the contact between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and the photocatalyst, and result in lower mass transfer efficiency in gas-solid reactions. Meanwhile, TiO2 catalysts including the electrospun TiO2 nanofibers with hydrophilic surfaces are not favorable for the infiltration and adsorption of non-polar VOCs. To solve these problems, in this work, the monolithic composites TiO2/HKUST-1/RGO@melamine foam (named MRTH) with improved surface mass transfer composed of metal-organic framework (HKUST-1), graphene oxide (GO) and electrospun TiO2 nanofibers was designed. The metal-organic framework HKUST-1 plays a role in promoting the adsorption of toluene, while the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) facilitates the infiltration of non-polar molecules on the surface of the composite and has better electron transport capability. A type II heterojunction between the electrospun TiO2 nanofibers and HKUST-1 formed in the monolithic composites suppresses the recombination of electron-hole pairs and extends their lifespan. Comparing with the bare electrospun TiO2 nanofibers, the MRTH foam composites exhibit a wider light absorption range, hydrophilic and oleophobic properties and a higher separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. In 90 min of dark adsorption, the removal rate of toluene over MRTH-8 was 52.32 %, while under irradiation by xenon lamp for 150 min, the removal rate over MRTH-8 reached 90.15 %. The amount of monolithic foam composites can also be easily adjusted in the reactor to achieve the best possible removal of the contaminant. The prepared composite materials have been characterized in detail, and the possible mechanisms have also been discussed. The foam composites prepared in this work have high catalytic activity and gas-solid reaction mass transfer efficiency, so they have wide practical application prospects in the field of VOCs abatement.

Selective dissolution of micro-spherical Ca-Mn mixed oxides for efficient propane oxidation

The improvement of catalytic efficiency is of great significance to the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a class of key air pollutants leading to ground-level ozone pollution. Herein, a series of micro-spherical Ca-Mn mixed oxides (CaxMnyOz), namely CaMn3O6, Ca2Mn3O8 and CaMnO3, were prepared by a two-step precipitation method, and defects were constructed on which by selective dissolution to enhance the low-temperature catalytic performance in the oxidation of propane (C3H8) as a representative short-chain alkane VOCs. The synthesized CaxMnyOz oxides demonstrated drastically different response to the dissolution modification initiated by acid treatment. Specifically, after acid dissolution, while CaMn3O6 and Ca2Mn3O8 maintained largely their original structures, the perovskite-type CaMnO3 underwent lattice rearrangement and was transformed into γ-MnO2-like product with only a tiny amount of Ca. In C3H8 oxidation, the catalytic performance of CaMnO3 was significantly improved after selective dissolution, as indicated by a significant decrease of T90, i.e. the temperature to achieve 90% C3H8 conversion, from 455 °C to 240 °C. Mechanistic investigation by in-depth X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies revealed that selective dissolution led to higher Mn4+ concentrations and more oxygen vacancies on the oxide surfaces, thus facilitated electron transfer and O2 activation in C3H8 oxidation reactions. This study paves a new path for the design of cost-effective oxide catalysts toward the abatement of short-chain alkane VOCs.

Dynamic Model Validation and Simulation of Acetone-Toluene and Benzene-Toluene Systems for Industrial Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Abatement.

Environmental impact mitigation is one of the grand challenges for industries globally. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are solvents whose emissions are potentially toxic to human health and ecosystems yet indispensable for the manufacturing of life-saving medicine. Adsorption with activated carbon columns is an established countermeasure for end-of-pipe emission control, whose efficiency, however, is impeded by irregular bed saturation due to the complex nature of its inputs. This work presents the application of a validated nonisothermal adsorption model to examine multicomponent trace mixtures of acetone-toluene and benzene-toluene on activated carbon. Our results indicate preferential adsorption of toluene over both acetone and benzene for all concentrations examined, which is in agreement with experimental data. Moreover, moderate temperature variations and pressure drops are revealed. Finally, Glueckauf's hodograph theory is employed for maximum outlet concentration prediction and compared with simulation results and experimental data, thus providing valuable insights into nonisothermal VOC abatement, which paves the way for industrial operation optimization.

Pt on Atomic-Layered WO3 Islands: Electronic Tuning of Platinum-Tungsten Heterostructures for Highly Efficient Low-Temperature VOC Combustion.

Adjusting the electronic state of noble metal catalysts on a nanoscale is crucial for optimizing the performance of nanocatalysts in many important environmental catalytic reactions, particularly in volatile organic compound (VOC) combustion. This study reports a novel strategy for optimizing Pt catalysts by modifying their electronic structure to enhance the electron density of Pt. The research illustrates the optimal 0.2Pt-0.3W/Fe2O3 heterostructure with atomic-thick WO3 layers as a bulking block to electronically modify supported Pt nanoparticles. Methods such as electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirm Pt's electron-enriched state resulting from electron transfer from atomic-thick WO3. Testing for benzene oxidation revealed enhanced low-temperature activity with moderate tungsten incorporation. Kinetic and mechanistic analyses provide insights into how the enriched electron density benefits the activation of oxygen and the adsorption of benzene on Pt sites, thereby facilitating the oxidation reaction. This pioneering work on modifying the electronic structure of supported Pt nanocatalysts establishes an innovative catalyst design approach. The electronic structure-performance-dependent relationships presented in this study assist in the rational design of efficient VOC abatement catalysts, contributing to clean energy and environmental solutions.

High-Performance Nanomaterial’s in Air Filtration and Purification

Industrialization and urbanization are amongst the major sources of air pollution. Though high-performance nanomaterials offer compelling advances for air filtration and purification. In this work, several nanomaterials were tested for their ability to remove particulates (PM2.5 and PM10) and VOCs, while evaluating the wear and tear of each material. Pressure had no effect on PM2.5 capture efficiency which was 80% using activated carbon, while carbon nanotubes were more efficient in PM10 capture despite greater pressure drop. Graphene oxide was very effective in the abatement of volatile organic compounds, which was not the case for titanium dioxide which performed as good as activated carbon in the capture of PM2.5 particles but with a pressure drop of the same magnitude. Silver nanoparticles were the most effective in a percent capture of PM10 particles at low pressure drop. Yeoman’s zinc was effective in re-absorbing volatile organic compounds from the dust. The PEI-coated and electro spun nanofibers are capable of capturing PM2.5 and PM10 particles respectively, and at relatively low-pressure reductions. Results from durability studies demonstrated that TiO2 and silver nanoparticles exhibited superior efficiency retention throughout numerous cycles, but PEI-coated nanofibers saw substantial efficiency degradation

Abatement of Volatile Organic Compounds Employing a Thermoplastic Nano‐Photocatalyst Layered on a Glass Reactor

AbstractIndustrial development and urbanization have increased the emission of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere, causing environmental and health risks. Several approaches are used for their abatement, including chemical, thermo‐ and photo‐catalytic oxidations, but they are not fully satisfactory. In this work, a thermoplastic TiO2‐based photo‐catalyst was used as a coating layer of a glass‐reactor. Solar‐triggered photocatalytic degradation of ethanol, toluene, and acetone (used as model VOCs) highlights the better performance of the coated photoreactor than that of TiO2 nanopowder. The influence of the pollutant flow rate on the photodegradation performance of the system was also investigated, revealing an inverse relationship between degradation and flow rates. The experimental data suggest that our approach provides a cost‐effective and efficient way to boost the abatement of VOCs, useful for further industrial‐scale applications. The morphology and the compositional homogeneity of the nanocomposite coating were addressed through Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive X‐ray Analysis.

A radial‐flow device for the biopurification of a model VOC‐ and wood‐smoke‐ contaminated confined space

AbstractBACKGROUNDIndoor air pollution is a growing problem worldwide that causes a series of health issues in the population. Effective devices for abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are currently restricted to adsorption systems based on active carbon. The objective of this study was to evaluate the operation of a new design of radial‐flow biopurifier using a model mixture of toluene, benzo(α)pyrene (BaP) and formaldehyde, initially inoculated with the filamentous fungus Fusarium solani and the bacterium Rhodococcus erythropolis.RESULTSThe results show that, under the range of inlet load tested and under continuous operation, the biopurification system achieved removal efficiencies above 90%, translating into a purifier air refreshment capacity of 0.62, 2.5 and 0.8 h−1 for BaP, formaldehyde and toluene, respectively.CONCLUSIONThe system was operated for 8 months, without a decrease in the single‐pass removal efficiency, and withstood up to 15 days starvation periods with a marginal effect on its air refreshment capacity once the feeding of pollutants was restarted. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Comparative Analysis of Volatile Organic Compound Purification Techniques in Complex Cooking Emissions: Adsorption, Photocatalysis and Combined Systems.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are molecules present in our everyday life, and they can be positive, such as in the formation of odour and food flavour, or harmful to the environment and humans, and research is focusing on limiting their emissions. Various methods have been used to achieve this purpose. Firstly, we review three main degradation methods: activated carbon, photocatalysis and a synergetic system. We provide a general overview of the operative conditions and report the possibility of VOC abatement during cooking. Within the literature, none of these systems has ever been tested in the presence of complex matrices, such as during cooking processes. The aim of this study is to compare the three methods in order to understand the behaviour of filter systems in the case of realistically complex gas mixtures. Proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) has been used in the real-time monitoring of volatilome. Due to the fact that VOC emissions are highly dependent on the composition of the food cooked, we evaluated the degradation capacity of the three systems for different burger types (meat, greens, and fish). We demonstrate the pros and cons of photocatalysis and adsorption and how a combined approach can mitigate the drawbacks of photocatalysis.

Constructing Active Cu2+-O-Fe3+ Sites at the CuO-Fe3O4 Interface to Promote Activation of Surface Lattice Oxygen.

Activating surface lattice oxygen (Olatt) through the modulation of metal-oxygen bond strength has proven to be an effective route for facilitating the catalytic degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Although this strategy has been implemented via the construction of the TM1-O-TM2 (TM represents a transition metal) structure in various reactions, the underlying principle requires exploration when using different TMs. Herein, the Cu2+-O-Fe3+ structure was created by developing CuO-Fe3O4 composites with enhanced interfacial effect, which exhibited superior catalytic activity to their counterparts, with T90 (the temperature of toluene conversion reaching 90%) decreasing by approximately 50 °C. Structural analyses and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the active Cu2+-O-Fe3+ sites at the CuO-Fe3O4 interface improved low-temperature reducibility and oxygen species activity. Particularly, X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy revealed the contraction and expansion of Cu-O and Fe-O bonds, respectively, which were responsible for the activation of the surface Olatt. A mechanistic study revealed that toluene can be oxidized by rapid dehydrogenation of methyl assisted by the highly active surface Olatt and subsequently undergo ring-opening and deep mineralization into CO2 following the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. This study provided a novel strategy to explore interface-enhanced TM catalysts for efficient surface Olatt activation and VOCs abatement.
