Glanceable and Informative WearOS User Interface for Kids and Parents

This paper proposes a wearable user interface intended for kids and parents using WearOS smartwatches. We first review what constitutes a kids smartwatch and then design UI components for watchfaces to be used by kids and parents. Different UI components ranging from activity, education, voice search, app usage, video, location, health, and quick dial are described. These components are either implemented as complications or on watchfaces and may require on-device standalone function, cross-device communication, and external database. We introduce a theme-based amusing UI for kids whereas simple and easily accessible components are recommended to parents’ watchface. To illustrate use cases, we present 3 scenarios for enhancing communication between parents and child. To show feasibility and potential of our approach, we implement our proof-of-concept using commercial smartwatches, smartphones, and external cloud database. Furthermore, performance of checking app usages on different devices are presented, followed by discussion on limitations and future work.

ASSESSMENT OF THE STATE OF DEVELOPMENT OF THE WORLD MARKET OF HOTEL SERVICES IN THE CONDITIONS OF COVID-19

The situation of development of the world market of hotel services in modern conditions is analyzed. High employment rates of the global hotel industry in 2014-2019 and a sharp decline in employment of the global hotel industry in the period 2019-2020 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. An analysis of the capacity and occupancy of rooms in the leading countries of the world in 2014-2019. High growth rates of the number of hotel rooms in the United States, China, Mexico, Thailand, Indonesia. The dynamics of development of the world hotel industry by regions is analyzed. It was found that a slight decrease in hotel employment in 2019 in all regions except the Middle East and Africa. A constant growth trend and high occupancy rates of accommodation establishments have been recorded in the European and Asia-Pacific region. According to the results of the assessment of the dynamics of monthly hotel occupancy in 2019-2020, a downward trend was established. A study of the dynamics of arrivals of international tourists in the period 2000-2020 and analyzed scenarios for future development. It was found that the results of 2020 are expected to reduce the arrival of international tourists by 70-75%. It may take 2.5 to 4 years for international tourism to return to 2019 levels. The directions of development of the world hotel economy in the conditions of quarantine are generalized. These include the transfer of a significant amount of business activity to the virtual world; use of voice search and voice control; increase the share in the field of services where personal contact is not required; introduction of strict sanitary and epidemiological norms and measures where it is not possible to refuse personal contacts; increasing the robotization of production processes; transition to non-cash financial transactions.

Examining User Perception and Usage of Voice Search

With the development of mobile technologies, voice search is becoming increasingly important in our daily lives. By investigating the general usage of voice search and user perception about voice search systems, this research aims to understand users' voice search behavior. We are particularly interested in how users perform voice search, their topics of interest, and their preference toward voice search. We elicit users' opinions by asking them to fill out an online survey. Results indicated that participants liked voice search because it was convenient. However, voice search was used much less frequently than keyboard search. The success rate of voice search was low, and the participants usually gave up voice search or switched to keyboard search. They tended to perform voice search when they were driving or walking. Moreover, the participants mainly used voice search for simple tasks on mobile devices. The main reasons why participants disliked voice search are attributed to the system mistakes and the fact that they were unable to modify the queries.

Bus route recognition for visually impaired people

Most important part in human’s life is our six senses, if we are not having any one of the senses, it will be more difficult to run our day to day life. Here we are going to help the visually impaired peoples to listen where there are and what are they going to do next as a sense in our body. visually impaired usually get information for their next move from others, this may create a inferiority complex to them that they can’t be like normal human beings, they are always dependent on others. To make them fell self-confident and to face their obstacles by themselves we have specially customized a smart cap for visually impaired peoples, as they can help them in their day to day life. Vision plays a significant role. Persons without vision can gather information through their hearing skills. The proposed system is an innovative implementation of a smart guidance system for those with vision. The system is a novel and real-time cost-effective technique. The system consists of three modules: voice search module, image processing module and voice processing module. These modules are executed using the keyword function search, which is in voice form, provided by the user. The system combines the concept of optical character recognition and the text to speech synthesizer. It involves extracting text from the image and translating the text into speech; this makes it easier for the user to read the text. From a computer standpoint, extracting text from color images is a difficult task. It can also be used to identify the bus name and bus number at the bus stop or bus stand for the blind and prevents it from being used by an ultrasonic sensor and is communicated to the user by the vibration sensing mechanism.

Search engine marketing and social media marketing predictive trends

The research purpose of this article was to analyse the search engine marketing and social media marketing predictive trends that are occurring both regionally in Africa and on a global scale. The motivation for the study was to offer pragmatic advice to business practitioners in crafting digital marketing strategies by leveraging search engine marketing and social media marketing trends. In terms of research methodology, a systematic literature survey method and an inductive research approach were applied. Social media concepts were critically analysed and evaluated to determine their link to the current research focus area. The main literature findings showed that the main trends include the use of Accelerated Mobile Pages, micro-vlogging, voice search, blogging and social messaging. In the continuous dynamic digital landscape, marketers need to embrace the art of doing business by adopting new search engine marketing and social media marketing techniques. Mini-batch sample selection strategies for deep learning based speech recognition

With the use of deep learning technologies, speech recognition systems gained more success and human–computer interactions became more prevalent. Deep learning based speech recognition systems are getting more attention and are having tremendous success in all areas of speech recognition, such as voice search, mobile communication, and personal digital assistance. However, speech recognition is still challenging due to hardness of adapting new languages, difficulty in handling variations in speech datasets, and overcoming distorting factors. Deep learning systems have the ability to overcome these challenges using high-level abstractions in the datasets by using a deep graph with multiple processing layers using training algorithms, such as gradient descent optimization. In this study, a variant of gradient descent optimization, mini-batch gradient descent is used. We proposed four strategies for selecting mini-batch samples to represent variations of each feature in the dataset for speech recognition tasks to increase model performance of deep learning based speech recognition. For this purpose, gender and accent adjusted strategies are proposed for selecting mini-batch samples. The experiments show that proposed strategies perform better in comparison with standard mini-batch sample selection strategy.

NATURAL LANGUAGE QUESTION ANSWERING SYSTEM OVER LINKED DATA


 
 Linked Data project is aimed to give
 more details on any subject through the big knowledge bases defined on the web.
 In this context, knowledge bases offer endpoint service user interfaces to
 query their data. Because of the SPARQL query language limitation of these
 knowledge bases, a significant number of web users are unable to benefit from
 these services. In this paper, an English natural language question answering
 system over Linked Data is proposed in order to eliminate this limitation. The proposed
 system's main processes can be listed as follows: (1) Extracting Part-Of-Speech
 (POS) tags, (2) pattern extraction & preparing appropriate SPARQL queries,
 (3) executing user queries & displaying the results. The features which are
 not provided by the endpoint services of knowledge bases such as dynamic
 paging, voice search and answer vocalization which make the usage of the proposed system to be possible by the visually-impaired
 web users, question-answer caching, social media integration, and live spell
 checking are proposed. According to experimental results, the proposed system’s
 question answering performance is improved between 2 and 12 times through the
 type of natural language question thanks to the question-answer caching
 mechanism.

As much as Robert Bellah's final work, Religion in Human Evolution, has been studied and dissected, no critic underlined the importance of psychoanalysis for its main argument and its theoretical framework. The paper shows the influence exerted by a controversial interpreter of Freud, Norman O. Brown, on Bellah's ideas, intellectual profile, and writing style in the late-1960s and early 1970s. While in search for a new intellectual voice, Bellah was struck by Brown's work and began to make intensive use of his book, Love's Body, both in his teaching and in his research of the early 1970s, during his so-called "symbolic realism" period. While Bellah abandoned Brown's ideas and style in the mid-1970s, some of the basic intuitions he had during that period still survived as one of the major theoretical intuitions of Religion and Human Evolution.

Visual Arts Search on Mobile Devices

Visual arts, especially paintings, appear everywhere in our daily lives. They are not only liked by art lovers but also by ordinary people, both of whom are curious about the stories behind these artworks and also interested in exploring related artworks. Among various methods, the mobile visual search has its merits in providing an alternative solution to text and voice searches, which are not always applicable. Mobile visual search for visual arts is far more challenging than the general image visual search. Conventionally, visual search, such as searching products and plant, focuses on locating images containing similar objects. Hence, approaches are designed to locate objects and extract scale-invariant features from distorted photos that are captured by the mobile camera. However, the objects are only part of the visual art piece; the background and the painting style are both important factors that are not considered in the conventional approaches. In this article, an empirical investigation is conducted to study issues in photos taken by mobile cameras, such as orientation variance and motion blur, and how they influence the results of the mobile visual arts search. Based on the empirical investigation results, a photo-rectification pipeline is designed to rectify the photos into perfect images for feature extraction. A new method is proposed to learn high discriminative features for visual arts, which considers both the content information and style information in visual arts. Apart from conducting solid experiments, a real-world system is built to prove the effectiveness of the proposed methods. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first article to solve problems for visual arts search on mobile devices.

Examining users' partial query modification patterns in voice search

This article investigates how to improve the effectiveness of voice search systems. Earlier research found that participants employed voice search much less frequently than keyboard search. The main reasons that participants disliked voice search are system mistakes and the inability to modify queries. In keyboard search, query reformulation is facilitated by partial query modification, which is not supported by most of the current voice search systems. Consequently, users need to speak the complete query in voice search even with only minor changes. This article focuses on examining partial query modification during voice search through a Wizard of Oz user experiment. It examines if users would prefer partial query modification and how they perform it in voice search. Thirty‐two participants participated in the experiment. Results indicated that when given the opportunity, the users performed more partial query modifications than complete queries. Common partial query modification strategies and patterns emerged from the experiment. The results can be used to improve the voice search system design and benefit the research community in general. System implications and future work were discussed.

Achieving position 0: Optimising your content to rank in Google’s answer box

In response to an ever-growing expectation of instant gratification among users, Google began using ‘answer boxes’ in its search engine results pages (SERPs) as early as 2013. Today, Google includes these features in nearly half of the SERPs for some types of queries. More prominently placed and conspicuously designed, answer boxes (also known as featured snippets, position 0 or the instant answer) frequently steal clicks from the result in position one. Additionally, these instant answers are also used for voice search results on devices like Amazon Echo and Google Home. Reliant on organic traffic, content marketers must adapt their content to perform well in Google’s answer box to stay relevant. This paper provides a four-pillar strategy for dominating Google’s position 0 through audience research, competitor research, content optimisation and technical optimisation. Included are actionable steps to identify the customer’s greatest needs, leverage Google’s powerful machine learning and take advantage of competitor weaknesses to increase answer box appearance. In addition, readers will learn the challenges of measurement with the answer box and voice search, which may lead to decreased traffic while increasing influence and return on investment.

From textual orality to oral textuality: The case of voice queries

This study analyzes the phenomenon of digital voice search queries against the background of the fluid and changing balance in the orality–literacy osmosis of different historical eras. In attempting to theoretically conceptualize the unique oral characteristics of this new digital feature, this article argues that as the result of technological considerations, voice querying manifests an attempt to discipline oral words – to pronounce them while thinking of their written form. The article also considers the oxymoron of ‘looking up’ information through spoken words; the effect of an interface that stresses the use of the oral words as an event; the devocalization of queries, as they transform into a written form; and the implications of browsing the Internet through oral word searches, especially for young children. It concludes that the integration of these oral features can be explained by the affordances of digital media on the one hand and the ‘revival’ of intuitive preprint features attempting to ease the cognitive demands of print culture on the other hand.

Young Children and Voice Search: What We Know From Human-Computer Interaction Research.

Young children are prolific question-askers. The growing ubiquity of voice interfaces (e.g., Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa), as well as the availability of voice input in search fields, now make it possible for children to ask questions via Internet search when they are able to speak clearly, but before they have learned to read and write, typically between 3 and 6 years of age. The prevalence of voice search makes it important to understand children’s changing conceptions of digital devices as a source of information and the role of technology-mediated question-asking in development. While limited research has focused on young children’s use of voice interfaces, reviewing two related bodies of literature sheds light on how this use might unfold. This paper brings together studies of how children look for information, and of how they perceive and understand the informational and social roles of technology, drawing on human-computer interaction research. We conclude by highlighting lines of questioning for future work on younger children’s interaction through voice search.

Research on voice search behavior in the last 10 years

ABSTRACTVoice search enables users to issue spoken information requests and retrieve desired information on web/mobile search interfaces. We conducted a literature review to examine the extent to which existing studies have addressed voice search behavior, with a focus on the employed methodologies and the focused topics in these studies. Fourteen relevant studies conducted since 2008 were identified from four publication databases. These studies were mainly focused on three aspects of search behavior: voice query characteristics, reformulation strategies, and users' perception/satisfaction. Our results provide a snapshot of how users perform and perceive voice search in order to inform future research and design of voice search systems.

Voice Controlled Automation Using Raspberry Pi

We live in an era surrounded totally by technology & automations, out of the various automations present for various tasks one of the most important one is Home Automation. They can work with the help of smart phones & remotes, but at times we see that the automations present in the market today are too expensive, so here I propose a solution for home automation that would work on speech processing & is also cost effective. The total costing of this project came out to be around 3200 INR. The systems prototype that we have made applies home automation by listening to the user’s voice, it then takes this voice as an input command for operating various appliances. We so use mic’s to record this input & then send it to the raspberry pi through our circuitry. The pi processor analyzes this voice speech & search’s for keywords related to load switching, and performs the automation accordingly.
