This year's Summit, held as a hybrid event in Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA, from September 30 to October 3, 2024, is dedicated to deepening our understanding of the intricate relationships between avian influenza and the broader One Health framework. As we gather in a time of unprecedented change and global interconnectedness, the Summit offers a unique platform for experts, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to explore the emerging issues that define the landscape of avian influenza. Our discussions will span the latest scientific research, innovative strategies for disease control, and the broader implications for public health, agriculture, and wildlife. Through a combination of in-person and virtual sessions, we aim to foster collaboration, share cutting-edge insights, and develop actionable solutions that can address the complex challenges at the intersection of animal, human, and environmental health. This Summit is not just a forum for knowledge exchange but a catalyst for forging the partnerships and policies necessary to protect global health in an increasingly interconnected world. Global hepatitis B and D community advisory board: expectations, challenges, and lessons learned.

Community Advisory Boards (CABs) play an important role in developing and delivering patient-centered care. However, the impact of participation on CAB members has not been well studied, particularly on the global scale. In 2022, the Hepatitis B Foundation (HBF) convened the first global hepatitis B and hepatitis delta CAB with 23 members from 17 countries, representing six out of the seven World Health Organization (WHO) regions, and countries with the largest hepatitis B and hepatitis delta disease burden. To reflect on the process of assembling an effective and motivated CAB and assess the impact on CAB participants, three virtual focus group sessions were held with 16 participants in July and August 2023. Sessions were recorded and transcribed. Questions focused on motivations for joining the CAB, membership experiences, and lessons learned. Grounded theory analysis was used to generate hypotheses about reasons for CAB members' participation, as well as challenges and suggestions. Qualitative analysis using inductive reasoning identified key themes within responses. Transcripts were independently analyzed by a primary and secondary coder. Motivations for joining the CAB included participants' desire to advocate for people living with hepatitis B and hepatitis delta, and other altruistic factors. Participants reflected that through CAB membership, they gained networking and advocacy opportunities and enhanced their hepatitis B- and hepatitis delta-related knowledge. Challenges participants experienced were related to time, physical limitations, and stigma. Finally, participants discussed their limited direct engagement with drug developers and proposed ways the CAB can increase interactions with stakeholders going forward. Based on participants' assessments, establishing a global CAB for stigmatized infectious diseases is worth the effort. Regular internal review of community advisory boards' structure and performance is critical to ensure the CAB is fulfilling its mission.

The impact of religious spiritual care training on the spiritual health and care burden of elderly family caregivers during the COVID-19 pandemic: a field trial study

BackgroundFamily caregiving is associated with many physical and psychological problems for caregivers, but the effect of spiritual support on reducing their issues during a crisis is also the subject of research. The study aims to examine the impact of religious spiritual care training on the spiritual health and care burdens of elderly family caregivers during the COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsThe randomized controlled field trial involved 80 Iranian family caregivers in Bushehr City, who were selected by convenience sampling based on the inclusion criteria and divided into experimental (40 people) and control (40 people) groups by simple random sampling in 2021 and 2022. Data collection was conducted using spiritual health and care burden questionnaires using the Porsline software. The virtual intervention included spiritual and religious education. Four virtual sessions were held offline over two weeks. The first session was to get to know the participants and explain the purpose, The second session focused on the burden of care, the third on empowerment, and the fourth on mental health and related issues. In the control group, daily life continued as usual during the study.ResultsMean changes in existential health (3.40 ± 6.25) and total spiritual health (5.05 ± 11.12) increased in the intervention group and decreased in the control group. There were statistically significant differences between the two groups for existential health (t = 3.78, p = 0.001) and spiritual health (t = 3.13, p = 0.002). Cohen’s d-effect sizes for spiritual health and caregiving burden were 0.415 and 0.366, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in mean changes in religious health (p = 0.067) or caregiving burden (p = 0.638) between the two intervention and control groups.ConclusionGiven that the religious-spiritual intervention had a positive effect on existential health and no impact on religious health or care burden, it is recommended that comprehensive planning be undertaken to improve the spiritual health of family caregivers to enable them to better cope with critical situations such as a COVID-19 pandemic.Trial registrationIRCT code number IRCT20150529022466N16 and trial ID number 48,021. Resiliency among older adults receiving lung cancer treatment (ROAR-LCT): A novel supportive care intervention for older adults with advanced lung cancer

IntroductionNovel supportive care interventions designed for an aging population with lung cancer are urgently needed. We aimed to determine the feasibility of a novel supportive care physical therapy (PT) plus progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) intervention delivered to older adults with advanced lung cancer in the United States (US). Materials and MethodsThis clinical trial, Resiliency Among Older Adults Receiving Lung Cancer Treatment (ROAR-LCT: NCT04229381), recruited adults aged ≥60 years with unresectable stage III/IV non-small cell (NSCLC) or small cell lung cancer (SCLC) receiving cancer treatment at The James Thoracic Oncology Center (planned enrollment, N = 20). There were no exclusion criteria pertaining to performance status, laboratory values, prior cancer diagnoses, comorbidities, or brain metastases. Participants were evaluated by PT and psychology and given an exercise pedaler, resistance bands, a relaxation voice recording, and instructions at study initiation. Participants were evaluated in-person by PTs and psychologists at the start and end of the 12-session intervention, with the intervening sessions conducted via virtual health. Participants completed self-reported measures of functional status, symptoms, and mood longitudinally with the following instruments: EQ-5D-5L, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and General Anxiety Disorder-7. PT assessments included the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) and the two-minute walk test. Feasibility was defined as at least 60% of participants completing at least 70% of all intervention sessions. Optional gut microbiome samples and activity monitoring data (ActiGraph®) were also collected. ResultsThe ROAR-LCT study concluded after consenting 22 patients. Among the 22 consented, 18 (81.8%) started the intervention; 11 participants (61.1%) completed at least 70% of all study sessions. All participants with SCLC completed the intervention. Reasons for withdrawal included progression of disease or hospitalization. The majority (88.9%) of patients who started were able to complete at least one virtual health session. Participants' functional status, SPPB, depression, and anxiety scores were stable from pre- to post-intervention. Participants who withdrew had worse baseline scores across domains. Seven microbiome and six ActiGraph® samples were collected. Discussion: This is one of the first PT + PMR supportive care interventions using virtual health among older adults with advanced lung cancer to achieve feasibility in the US.

Strategy Development to Improve Brand Awareness and Sales Performance

The rapid growth of the beauty and skincare industry in Indonesia is driven by the extensive use of digital platforms for product promotion and marketing. Noera Beauty Care, a local beauty brand, faces challenges in enhancing its brand awareness and sales performance. This study aims to analyze the influence of digital marketing, content marketing, endorsement influence, and brand engagement on brand awareness and its impact on purchase intention. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining qualitative interviews with the CEO and head of marketing and quantitative surveys of 200 active social media users. The data were analyzed using PLS-SEM. The findings indicate that digital marketing, content marketing, and endorsement influence significantly impact brand awareness, while brand engagement does not. Brand awareness positively affects purchase intention. Based on these findings, several marketing strategies are proposed, such as product innovation through collaboration with influencers, creating live shopping or virtual try-on sessions, website updates and development, evaluation, and adjustment of marketing strategies, investing in IT infrastructure, strengthening relationships with consumers through loyalty programs, and creating educational content and quizzes to increase public knowledge about the benefits of Noera products.

A walking aid selection, training, and education program (ADSTEP) to prevent falls in multiple sclerosis: A randomized controlled trial

Background: People with multiple sclerosis (MS) fall frequently. Poor walking aid selection, fit, and use contribute to falls in those who use walking aids. Objectives: To determine if the Assistive Device Selection, Training, and Education Program (ADSTEP), with six weekly one-on-one virtual sessions with a physical therapist prevents falls and improves other outcomes in people with MS who use walking aids but still fall. Methods: A total of 78 people were randomized to ADSTEP or control. Participants recorded falls daily through 6 months post-intervention. Other outcomes were assessed at baseline, intervention completion, and 6 months later. Outcomes were compared between groups. Results: The ADSTEP group’s mean fall rate (falls/person/month) decreased from baseline to intervention completion (ADSTEP = −0.75, control = +0.90, p < 0.001) and to 6 months later (ADSTEP = −1.02, control = +0.03, p = 0.017) compared to controls. At 6 months, the ADSTEP group had improved physical activity (days/week walking ⩾ 10 minutes at a time: ADSTEP = +0.69, control = −0.58, p = 0.007; minutes/day sitting: ADSTEP = −57, control = +56, p = 0.009) and walking aid fit (proportion with good fit: ADSTEP = +25%, control = −13%, p = 0.018) compared to controls. Conclusions: ADSTEP likely reduces falls, increases physical activity, and improves walking aid fit in people with MS who use walking aids and fell in the past year.

The Art of Medicine: Applying the Visual Thinking Strategy to Radiology.

The purpose of this project was to develop a formal visual arts training curriculum and evaluate if there was improvement in the observational and descriptive skills of first- and second-year medical students for radiologic images. Materials and methods: A demographic survey and an initial pre-test of 12 radiologic images were administered asking an open-ended question to describe the image and to identify the abnormality in their own words.Three virtual one-hour sessions of visual thinking strategy (VTS) training occurred, and an immediate post-test and a six-month post-test were administered, each with images different from the pre-test, as well as a final questionnaire. All tests were independently graded by two graders with a previously established grading rubric.Differences in scores were analyzed using paired T-tests. Thirty-nine medical students participated.The mean pre-test score was 62.2 +/- 18.6, and the mean post-test score improved by 41.7 +/- 17.9 points (p<0.01) to an average score of 103.9 +/- 20.4.Nine participants were lost to follow-up at six months, and the average six-month post-test score was 110.2 +/- 29.1 for a mean improvement of 9.3 +/- 13.1 points (p=0.320) from the initial post-test. Conclusion: There was a significant improvement in observational and descriptive skills in first- and second-year medical students when describing radiologic images, which was retained after six months.A formal VTS curriculum could play a beneficial role in medical student and radiology training programs not only to improve observational skills but also to address perceptual errors in diagnostic imaging.

EMPATHY Life in Psoriasis: Embracing Patients' Well-Being in Their Journey of Moderate-to-Severe Psoriasis.

Background: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide, impacting their physical and emotional well-being. The management of psoriasis requires effective communication and a strong physician-patient relationship. Objective: We aim to develop a novel algorithm to enhance patient well-being and care in moderate-to-severe psoriasis, considering the time constraints that dermatologists have in public hospitals. Methods: This project employed a multidisciplinary approach, involving collaboration between 14 experienced dermatologists (referred to as Key Opinion Leaders: KOLs) and a psychologist. During three separate meetings (an initial virtual session, a face-to-face meeting, and a final virtual meeting), an algorithm (Embracing Patients' Well-being in their Journey of Moderate-to-Severe psoriasis: EMPATHY), describing the patient's reception through the entire first visit and follow-up visits, was developed and refined. Results: The EMPATHY algorithm provides a step-by-step approach from the moment the patient arrives at reception, through the first visit and on to subsequent visits. This algorithm fills a critical gap in the existing guidelines by specifically addressing how to foster empathy during psoriasis patient visits within time-limited consultations. The algorithm outlines patient-centered strategies at each visit. Key aspects include creating a welcoming environment, active listening, respecting privacy, tailoring communication styles, and managing patient expectations. Conclusions: The EMPATHY algorithm represents a novel and promising approach to improving patient care and well-being in moderate-to-severe psoriasis. Developed together by dermatologists and a psychologist, this algorithm offers healthcare providers practical guidance for managing both initial and follow-up patient visits. While further validation is necessary, the potential for adapting the EMPATHY algorithm to diverse healthcare settings and patient populations holds promise for improving patient outcomes across various chronic conditions.

Using Simulation to Train Service Providers in Responding to Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and Trauma

This study used simulation-based research (SBR) to gain a better understanding of how intimate partner violence (IPV) service providers engage in trauma-informed practice in a simulated session with a standardized patient. Our qualitative study recruited 18 IPV service providers from Canada and the United States. Each participant engaged in a virtual 30-minute case-based simulated session with an actor portraying a survivor of IPV experiencing vulnerabilities related to violence and immigration status. Following each simulation, IPV service providers participated in a 30- to 45-minute reflective dialogue. The data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Identified themes included: (a) simulation builds trauma-informed responses that recognize intersecting identities (e.g., race, immigration status, culture) and (b) simulation helps train service providers in responding to IPV. Implications for social work research and practice, including the benefits of using simulation for training IPV service providers, will be discussed.

Diabetes Telemedicine Mediterranean Diet (DiaTeleMed) Study: study protocol for a fully remote randomized clinical trial evaluating personalized dietary management in individuals with type 2 diabetes

BackgroundThe Diabetes Telemedicine Mediterranean Diet (DiaTeleMed) Study is a fully remote randomized clinical trial evaluating personalized dietary management in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D). The study aims to test the efficacy of a personalized behavioral approach for dietary management of moderately controlled T2D, versus a standardized behavioral intervention that uses one-size-fits-all dietary recommendations, versus a usual care control (UCC). The primary outcome will compare the impact of each intervention on the mean amplitude of glycemic excursions (MAGE).MethodsEligible participants are between 21 and 80 years of age diagnosed with moderately controlled T2D (HbA1c: 6.0 to 8.0%) and managed on lifestyle alone or lifestyle plus metformin. Participants must be willing and able to attend virtual counseling sessions and log meals into a dietary tracking smartphone application (DayTwo), and wear a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) for up to 12 days. Participants are randomized with equal allocation (n = 255, n = 85 per arm) to one of three arms: (1) Personalized, (2) Standardized, or (3) UCC. Measurements occur at 0 (baseline), 3, and 6 months. All participants receive isocaloric energy and macronutrient targets to meet Mediterranean diet guidelines, in addition to 14 intervention contacts over 6 months (4 weekly then 10 biweekly) to cover diabetes self-management education. The first 4 UCC intervention contacts are delivered via synchronous videoconferences followed by educational video links. Participants in Standardized receive the same educational content as those in the UCC arm, following the same schedule. However, all intervention contacts are conducted via synchronous videoconferences, paired with Social Cognitive Theory (SCT)-based behavioral counseling, plus dietary self-monitoring of planned meals using a mobile app that provides real-time feedback on calories and macronutrients. Participants in the Personalized arm receive all elements of the Standardized intervention, in addition to real-time feedback on predicted post-prandial glycemic response (PPGR) to meals and snacks logged into the mobile app.DiscussionThe DiaTeleMed Study aims to address an important gap in the current landscape of precision nutrition by determining the contributions of behavioral counseling and personalized nutrition recommendations on glycemic control in individuals with T2D. The fully remote methodology of the study allows for scalability and innovative delivery of personalized dietary recommendations at a population level.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov NCT05046886. Navigating Alert Fatigue: A Case Study in Electronic Health Record Alert Design Optimization.

Clinical decision support (CDS) systems play a crucial role in enhancing patient outcomes, but inadequate design contributes to alert fatigue, inundating clinicians with disruptive alerts that lack clinical relevance. This case study delves into a quality improvement (QI) project addressing nursing electronic health record (EHR) alert fatigue by strategically redesigning four high-firing/low action alerts. Employing a mixed-methods approach, including quantitative analysis, empathy mapping sessions, and user feedback, the project sought to understand and alleviate the challenges posed by these alerts. Virtual empathy mapping sessions with clinical nurses provided valuable insights into user experiences. Qualitative findings, CDS design principles, and organizational practice expectations informed the redesign process, resulting in the removal of all four identified disruptive alerts and redesign of passive alerts. This initiative released 877 unactionable disruptive nursing hours, emphasizing the significance of proper alert design and the necessity for organizational structures ensuring sustained governance in healthcare system optimization.

Primary care clinician engagement in implementing a machine-learning algorithm for targeted screening of familial hypercholesterolemia

ObjectiveTo assess the impact of a multi-pronged educational approach on the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) management at a large academic medical center with the aim of empowering primary care clinicians (PCC) to diagnose and treat FH. MethodsA comprehensive educational program for PCCs on FH management was developed and piloted from July 2022 to March 2024. Components of our intervention included: 1. Implementation of a novel clinical decision support tool in the electronic medical record for FH management, 2. Development and dissemination of an interactive educational website focused on FH and its management, 3. Delivery of virtual instructional sessions to increase awareness of the tool, provide education on its use, and obtain support from institutional leadership, and 4. Direct outreach to a pilot subset of PCCs whose patients had been detected using the validated FIND FH® machine learning algorithm. Participating clinicians were surveyed at baseline before the intervention and after the educational session. Results70 PCC consented to participate in the study with a survey completion rate of 79 % (n = 55) and 42 % (n = 23) for the baseline and follow-up surveys, respectively. Objective PCC knowledge scores improved from 40 to 65 % of responders correctly responding to at least 2/3rds of survey questions. Despite the fact that 87 % identified PCC's as most effective for early detection of FH, 100 % of PCCs who received direct outreach chose to defer care to an outpatient cardiologist over pursuing workup in the primary care setting. ConclusionEmpowering PCCs in management of FH serves as a key strategy in addressing this underdiagnosed and undertreated potentially life-threatening condition. A systems-based approach to addressing these aims may include leveraging EMR-based clinical decision support models and cross-disciplinary educational partnerships with medical specialists.

COVID-19 lockdowns and children's access to justice: An interrupted time series analysis of Moroccan court filings

Morocco's national lockdown was enforced between March 21st and June 10th 2020 in response to the spread of coronavirus. Restriction of civil space was not fully extended to the judiciary which had to transition to virtual sessions. To prepare for future pandemics and disasters, it is crucial to understand how well court systems across jurisdictions especially in low- and middle-income countries managed to function and protect children's access to justice under the constraints of stay-at-home orders. To investigate the effect of the national lockdown on children's access to justice in Morocco, this study employed interrupted time series analysis of publicly available court filings (N = 77,335) pertaining to child protection from January 1st to December 31st 2020 spanning the pre-lockdown, lockdown, and post-lockdown periods. Results showed that lockdown measures hampered children's access to justice and is associated with statistically significant and substantial deceases in the number of cases heard by the courts across all filing types. The interrupted time series model estimates that average cases per week dropped by 199.5 for penal filings, 1180.3 for civil filings, 942.5 for complaint filings, and 358.1 for report fillings during the lockdown relative to the pre-lockdown period. While the percentage of cases with recorded delays mostly increased, the average case length decreased except for civil filings which saw a significant increase. The substantial susceptibility of civil cases to lockdowns might be precipitated by the need of individuals to petition the court for a hearing. Evidence suggests that the courts adjudicating child protection cases struggled to maintain operations during the national lockdown, and indicates the need for stronger disaster preparedness and an integrated child protection system to increase the judiciaries' resilience and children's access to justice in future emergency and disaster events.

“The changing same” of whiteness in the US LIS academy: a cathartic testimonial from BIPOC faculty scholars

PurposeThere is little to no empirical research on the phenomenon of ways in which the racism of whiteness transpires within the faculties and classrooms of US-based ALA-accredited library and information science (LIS) education programs. We do have scholars publishing meaningful work exploring diversity-equity-inclusion topics and initiatives to evolve the LIS discourse on these issues (Honma, 2005; Chancellor, 2019; De LaRosa et al., 2021; Gibson, 2019; Mehra et al., 2023; Colón-Aguirre et al., 2022; Hands, 2022). This research substantiates the conceptual research that exists by empirically exposing the ways in which the racism of whiteness functions at the interpersonal level of work culture in LIS programs (i.e. the academy) in the US.Design/methodology/approachAdapting Baima and Sude’s (2020) modified Delphi Method, a focus group of 13 BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) library and information science faculty members in the United States were recruited to participate in a one-time 60-min virtual Zoom session. Participants were engaged in three iterative rounds of reflective inquiry to reach a consensus of experience. The study design was embedded with critical race theory-based (CRT) ethnographic methods such as testimony (counterstorytelling), collective affirmation (shared narratives), and silence.FindingsBIPOC LIS faculty (tenure-track and tenured) have similar ideas about whiteness and how it is operationalized as micro- and macro-aggressions in the LIS academic workplace, most significantly inside the classroom. The experience of whiteness was prevalent among all study participants in two areas: workplace meetings with faculty colleagues and classroom sessions (face-to-face and online) with students.Originality/valueThe findings offer empirical evidence to support the prolific conceptual literature in LIS discourse concerning ways in which critical race theory (CRT) interrogates LIS’s socio-professional injustices and inequities (e.g. Gibson et al., 2018; Stauffer, 2020; Leung and Lopez-McKnight, 2021; Jennings and Kinzer, 2022; Snow and Dunbar, 2022). There remains a dearth of empirical research that reports how whiteness is reproduced in the practices, knowledge, and resources that make up the ethos of the LIS faculty meeting and classroom. Documenting the testimonies of BIPOC LIS faculty solidifies the existence of whiteness as a toxic reality in the LIS academy.

Prenatal affective cognitive training to reduce the risk of postpartum depression (PACT): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

BackgroundPostpartum depression (PPD) affects 30–50% of women with a history of previous depression or bipolar disorder and 8% of women with no history of depression. Negative cognitive biases in the perception of infant cues and difficulties with emotion regulation are replicated risk factors. Current interventions focus on detecting and treating rather than preventing PPD. The aim of this randomized controlled intervention trial is therefore to investigate the potential prophylactic effects of prenatal affective cognitive training for pregnant women at heightened risk of PPD.MethodsThe study will enrol a total of 292 pregnant women: 146 at high risk and 146 at low risk of PPD. Participants undergo comprehensive assessments of affective cognitive processing, clinical depressive symptoms, and complete questionnaires at baseline. Based on the responses, pregnant women will be categorized as either at high or low risk of PPD. High-risk participants will be randomized to either prenatal affective cognitive training (PACT) or care as usual (CAU) immediately after the baseline testing. The PACT intervention is based on emerging evidence for efficacy of affective cognitive training approaches in depression, including cognitive bias modification, attention bias modification, mindfulness-inspired emotion regulation exercises, and working memory training. Participants randomised to PACT will complete five individual computerised and virtual reality-based training sessions over 5 weeks. The primary outcome is the difference between intervention arms in the incidence of PPD, assessed with an interview 6 months after birth. We will also assess the severity of depressive symptoms, rated weekly online during the first 6 weeks postpartum.DiscussionThe results will have implications for future early prophylactic interventions for pregnant women at heightened risk of PPD. If the PACT intervention reduces the incidence of PPD, it can become a feasible, non-invasive prophylactic strategy during pregnancy, with positive mental health implications for these women and their children.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov NCT06046456 registered 21-09-2023, updated 08-07-2024.

Novel online enfacement illusion for investigating self-perception in mental disorders: an experimental study protocol

BackgroundRemote research methods and interventions for mental health disorders have become increasingly important, particularly for conditions like eating disorders (EDs). Embodiment illusions, which induce feelings of ownership over another person?s body or body parts, offer valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying self-perception issues in EDs and potential interventions. However, existing research using these illusions has been limited to face-to-face settings. We illustrate a novel online protocol to induce the enfacement illusion (embodiment illusion principles applied to one’s face) in an ED-based sample.MethodsParticipants complete a 2-hr virtual session with a researcher. First, baseline trait/state ED psychopathology measures and a self-face recognition task occur. Second, participants experience two testing blocks of the enfacement illusion involving synchronously and asynchronously mimicking a pre-recorded actor’s facial expressions. After each block, subjective and objective enfacement illusion measures occur alongside state ED psychopathology reassessment.DiscussionSuccessfully inducing enfacement illusions online could provide an affordable, accessible virtual approach to further elucidate the mechanistic role of self-perception disturbances across psychopathologies such as EDs. Moreover, this protocol may represent an innovative, remotely-delivered intervention strategy, as ‘enfacement’ over another face could update negative self-representations in a cost-effective, scalable manner.

Improving Safety through a Virtual Learning Collaborative.

Frontline healthcare safety leaders require expertise and confidence to manage local safety programs effectively yet are confronted with substantial challenges in identifying risk and reducing harm. We convened a multidisciplinary safety learning collaborative in a children's hospital pediatric department and used the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's Breakthrough Series model. Participants attended four virtual education sessions over 13 months (September 2020-September 2021) focused on identifying harm and using tools to improve safety. We analyzed departmental safety data monthly throughout the collaborative. The primary outcome was the development of improvement projects using direct application of the session content. The secondary outcome was participant confidence in improving safety via pre- and postsurveys. Seventy clinicians and quality consultants participated. Fifteen divisional safety improvement projects were initiated. The percentage of survey respondents who reported feeling "completely confident" in their ability to improve safety increased from 26% (n = 39) to 58% (n = 26) from September 2020 to September 2021 (P = 0.01) and maintained at 65% 1 year after the end of the collaborative. We observed a decrease in the mean rate of reported inpatient preventable and possibly preventable moderate/serious/catastrophic events per 1000 bedded days from 1.10 (baseline) to 0.71 (intervention period). Through a collaborative effort in a virtual learning environment, we facilitated the development of fifteen safety projects, increased leaders' confidence in improving safety, and saw improved inpatient safety. This approach, which involves healthcare professionals from various disciplines, may be effectively adapted to other settings.

Faculty Experiences: Virtual versus Traditional Problem-based Learning during COVID-19 in a Saudi Medical College

Abstract Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has forced a fast change to new teaching approaches based on online education. Problem-based learning (PBL) was one of the modified teaching strategies. The current study sought to examine faculty perceptions of virtual versus traditional PBL during the COVID-19 pandemic at a Saudi medical college. Methods: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study conducted at King Saud University’s College of Medicine. We compared the perceptions of faculty members who facilitated traditional face-to-face PBL in 2019–2020 and virtual PBL in 2020–2021. An online survey with demographic and practice data was distributed. The faculty’s perception of PBL facilitation, student learning, and overall satisfaction was investigated using a 5-degree Likert scale: 15 items grouped into three main areas. All of the questions were written in a way that compares traditional and virtual PBL. Mean scores were determined for all parts, and the findings were reported as mean standard deviation, with scores of 3 and above considered positive, and scores of &lt;3 considered negative. The data were analyzed with SPSS version 25.0. Results: In the study period, 57 faculty members facilitating PBL replied to the survey (response rate 67.85%). There were no gender variations in the representation of participants (male 56.1%, female 43.9%), and they come from a variety of basic and clinical departments. The majority of participants (91.3%) have more than 2 years of PBL facilitation experience, and 64.2% have received training in both virtual and traditional PBL facilitation. The faculty assessment of facilitating virtual PBL was favorable as overall satisfaction, with the mean of the components in the satisfaction section being 3.67. In terms of facilitation preferences, we discovered that despite the amount of effort involved in facilitating traditional PBL sessions (mean = 3.47), their motivation to facilitate traditional PBL was higher than that of virtual PBL (mean = 3.33). Faculty perceptions of students’ learning in PBL were more traditional, with the mean of the items in this section (such as students’ motivation, participation, and group dynamics) being higher (3.616). Conclusions: The faculty’s satisfaction with their abilities to properly facilitate virtual PBL sessions did not detract from their motivation to be in direct personal interaction with students during PBL sessions. To ensure faculty care about students’ learning in virtual PBL, their perception had to be correlated to their learning outcomes.

The 68th annual conference on magnetism and magnetic materials

The 2023 Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials (MMM) was held from October 30–November 3 at the Dallas Hyatt Regency, at the base of the iconic Reunion Tower. There, 703 on-site attendees from 37 different countries discussed cutting-edge research in fundamental and applied magnetism, made new connections, and met old friends and colleagues at one of the first primarily in-person conferences in our field since the major disruptions of the pandemic era. The format of the conference was primarily in-person, with supporting online content that included recordings of the most popular programs and presentations, made available after the conference (including all symposia, the tutorial, and selected other special content). All presenters had the option to contribute online content, as did 96 participants who did not travel to the venue and elected to present virtual posters. Attendees enjoyed a vibrant celebration of the magnetism research community that included a Texas-sized welcome reception, tutorials on machine learning in magnetism, seven symposia, a lively exhibit hall that hosted poster sessions and bierstuben, a full roster of special events, coffee breaks to facilitate active scientific discussions, and of course, excellent technical presentations. These technical presentations, organized into 45 oral sessions, 23 in-person poster sessions, and 17 virtual poster sessions, were selected by a Program Committee of 57 members, capably coordinated by three Program Chairs: Hendrik Ohldag (ALS-LBNL), Karin Leistner (TU Chemnitz), and Takahiro Moriyama (Nagoya University). These three Program Chairs worked seamlessly and tirelessly over many months to make the central mission of MMM a huge success. The Program Committee selected seven symposia from nominations provided by the magnetism community: “Frontier Topics in Antiferromagnetism: Altermagnetism and Topology,” “Rare Earth Spintronics,” “Recent Advances in Cavity Magnonics,” “Emerging Topics in Magnetic Tunnel Junctions: Altermagnetism, Probabilistic Computing and Energy Efficient Switching,” “Orbitronics: From Orbital Currents Created by Charge Currents to Creation by Light or RF Excitation,” “Imaging Magnetic Textures at the Nanoscale,” and finally “Magnetization Dynamics in Two-Dimensional van der Waals Magnets.” These symposia highlighted a wide range of exciting new areas for magnetism, and were part of a total of 101 invited talks, 28% of which were presented by women. The contributed program was selected by the Program Committee from more than 900 submitted abstracts.

Face-to-face and virtual vocabulary learning for individuals with intellectual disabilities

People with mild intellectual disabilities (ID) often have difficulties understanding and expressing advanced linguistic concepts. Prior to the arrival of COVID-19, there were no research-backed models to guide virtual interventions with this population. The research presented here pursues three objectives: to determine if the vocabulary of people with mild ID improves following face-to-face and virtual learning interventions, to understand the differences between these two interventions, and to assess participants’ perceptions of both modalities. The sample consists of 10 adults with mild ID who participated in 10 face-to-face learning sessions and 10 virtual learning sessions. An ad hoc designed vocabulary assessment instrument and semi-structured interviews are used, in addition to statistical software SPSS and Atlas.ti. The results show improvements in vocabulary in both modalities, although no significant differences were found, suggesting that both in-person and virtual modalities are effective for vocabulary learning in people with ID. However, there were exceptions in some categories such as gardening and baking. Likewise, participants expressed satisfaction and enthusiasm toward both interventions, but showed a preference for face-to-face sessions.
