B-spline Surface Based Concept Design Module for Applications in Virtual Reality Environment

AbstractOver the past decade, B-spline modeling has become the standard mathematical model for representing freeform or organic objects in CAD/CAM systems. Using a B- spline surface to represent the virtual model in a haptic concept design module helps to streamline the exchange of the information with existing CAD/CAM systems. B- spline surfaces also help increase visual realism because these represent continuous surface. At the same time, physically based virtual deformable models provide a sense of realism to the user. However, the algorithms used for interaction with the virtual model should be efficient to maintain acceptable level of virtual realism and perceive the simulation as continuous with no time lag. This paper presents a B-spline surface based concept design framework, which can be used to generate various concepts, evaluate these concepts, and provide user training. Virtual Christianity in an age of nominalist anthropology

This article claims that the collective object of an anthropology of Christianity should be Christianity as a virtual object, in the sense used by Gilles Deleuze: a field of multiplicitous potential with effects on the formation of the actual. This position is necessitated by the recurrent inability/refusal/demurral of the anthropology of Christianity to define what its exact object is. This inability/refusal/demurral is a symptom that can be traced back to a larger anthropological shift towards a nominalist ontology, a disciplinary tendency which is exemplified in the recent anthropological interest in Deleuzian-derived assemblage theory. After showing how current anthropological uses of Deleuze have neglected his concept of the virtual due to the same nominalist tendency, this article then argues that taking up Deleuze’s virtual realism would reconfigure assemblage theory in such a way that it would make the project of an anthropology of Christianity substantially more intelligible, as well as undoing what appear to be points of contestation internal to the sub-field.

Virtual Canadian Realities: Charting the Scott Pilgrim Universe

Through a mixture of political-economic and textual analysis, this article examines the Scott Pilgrim franchise, consisting of a series of graphic novels, feature film, and video game, from a transmedia storytelling perspective. By doing so, the author insists that the franchise constructs a globally networked vision of English-Canadian identity through a selective representation of Toronto that situates the city as a cultural filter for globally produced media. While arguing that transmedia storytelling presents a highly fractured fictional universe, with each form of media adding an additional layer of interpretation, the article calls attention to how the Scott Pilgrim franchise utilizes a narrative strategy commonly referred to as “magical realism,” which in the case of transmedia storytelling is perhaps better understood as a form of “virtual realism.” From this perspective, while admitting that the Scott Pilgrim fictional universe exhibits Canadian concerns over the role technologies play in the construction of identity, the author insists that the franchise also draws upon a broader internationally networked nostalgia for classic video games.

The Internal Connection Study of Graphics, Image and Virtual Realism

With the development of times, industry has been making great progress, which varies from primitive manual labor to machines in the age of steam. Then, machines and factories have taken the place of more and more manual labors with the development of mechanical design and relative theory. However, it still fails to reach the stage of full automation. Owing to the birth of computer and development of artificial intelligence, the robot factory is no longer a fresh topic. Undoubtedly, those are linked with graphic and computer’s development. There must be a more advanced theory and technology coming into being as graphic & image reach a higher stage. Then, it was named as the virtual realism technology. This new technology has been widely applied to various fields, such as, automatic production line, air quality automatic detector, war-simulating in army, “simulating space environment” on the earth, virtual laboratories building in the education and etc. Now, here are two basic concepts involved in the long-term development: graphics and image.

Validation of a Computer-based Bronchoscopy Simulator Developed in Taiwan

Conventional training in bronchoscopy may increase patient's discomfort and procedure-related morbidity. Computer-based bronchoscopy simulator (CBBS) permits the acquisition and evaluation of the necessary skills through a realistic bronchoscopic experience. This study was conducted to validate the use of a CBBS system developed in Taiwan as a learning and assessment tool. Twenty novice bronchoscopists and 10 expert bronchoscopists were enrolled as subjects in this prospective study. The 20 novice bronchoscopists were randomized into two groups, which received conventional bronchoscopic training or CBBS training and then completed a satisfaction survey. Subsequently, the novices who received CBBS training underwent an observational performance trial and the results were compared with those of expert bronchoscopists. All 10 expert bronchoscopists completed a realism survey and observational trial after CBBS performance. The satisfaction survey showed that the CBBS training program significantly increased participants' satisfaction (p = 0.002) and interest in learning (p < 0.001). The realism survey by the 10 expert bronchoscopists indicated that CBBS provides a favorable degree of realism with regard to the mechanical and visual parameters examined. Analysis of the performance results showed that the following parameters were capable of differentiating the participants by level of expertise: total procedure time (p = 0.002), percentage of bronchial segments entered (p = 0.012), percentage of bronchial segments identified (p < 0.001), percentage of repeated bronchial segments entered (p = 0.004), percentage of pathologies identified (p < 0.001), number of times that the bronchoscope tip collided with airway walls (p = 0.013), and number of times oral instruction was needed (p = 0.01). CBBS is a valid training method that increases interest in learning and provides a favorable degree of virtual realism. It can also distinguish various levels of competence at actual bronchoscopy and may have a useful role in the bronchoscopic training curriculum.

Simulation Based Training for the Future Force Warrior

In this paper we describe techniques we have adopted to develop a computer-based, outcome-driven simulator to train digital information skills for small unit leaders of the Army's Future Force Warrior program. We begin by contrasting attempts to engender “virtual realism” in simulation based training against attempts to engender cognitive realism by way of the branching storylines at the heart of an outcome-driven simulation. We next present an example of how such an approach might be applied to train digital information skills before turning to a more general discussion of the problems that such an approach entail—namely, crafting an engaging story while minimizing the combinatorial explosion in a branching storyline. We describe how we have dealt with these problems both by streamlining storylines and by decoupling student input from the branching process. Finally, we allude to a software tool we have created that allows the training developer to author and execute such outcome-driven simulations.

Validation of a computer-based colonoscopy simulator

The computer-based colonoscopy simulator is intended to provide a realistic colonoscopic experience and feedback to operators regarding procedure skills. Advocates hope that computer-based colonoscopy simulators will enhance the mastery of colonoscopy by trainees. Before this hypothesis can be tested, the claims made for a simulator must be validated. The aims of this study were to answer the following: Does a computer-based colonoscopy simulator provide a "realistic" experience? Do computer-based colonoscopy simulators' performance parameters differentiate varying levels of experience? Ten staff gastroenterologists, 6 gastroenterology fellows, and 6 residents each performed 2 computer-based colonoscopy simulator colonoscopies and performance parameters were recorded. Staff colonoscopists then completed a 6-item survey grading the "realism" of the simulation and procedure difficulty. Survey responses and performance scores were compared with the Wilcoxon rank-sum test. Faculty found the computer-based colonoscopy simulator experience to be realistic despite the "cases" being markedly easier than actual colonoscopy. The computer-based colonoscopy simulator distinguishes subjects according to endoscopic experience with 3 of its measured parameters (total procedure time, insertion time, time in "red-out"). No significant difference in the ability to distinguish among user types was found for the other 10 computer-based colonoscopy simulator measurements for which data were analyzable. The computer-based colonoscopy simulator provides a favorable degree of virtual realism with regard to visual simulation and colonoscope mechanics, although the "cases" were regarded as considerably easier than actual colonoscopy. The computer-based colonoscopy simulator has only limited capability for distinguishing varying levels of competence at actual colonoscopy. These findings suggest that a study to determine the role of computer-based colonoscopy simulators in the curriculum of trainees is warranted.
