Ethno veterinary practices for cattle amongst traditional veterinary health care practitioners in palayamkottai, tirunelveli, tamilnadu

In the Palayamkottai, tirunelveli in tamilnadu, people make extensive use of medicinal plants to treat a number of diseases in cattle. The aim of the study was to identify the medicinal plants used to treat various ailments in cattle. Ethno veterinary survey was carried out using questionnaire and individual interviews from June to July 2024 in Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli district, Tamilnadu. The study identified total of 53 plants species divided into 31 families used in the various cattle ailments such as Foot and Mouth Disease, Dysentery, Mastitis, wound, bleeding horns, abscess, to improve milk production, pain and contusion due to trauma in Cattle by traditional veterinary health care practitioners. 16 internal and external applications are prepared by using these species. Species from the Fabaceae, Poaceae and Lamiaceae families are the most widely represented. Leaves, seeds, fruits and roots are the most commonly used parts. The results of the study provided all relevant information, particularly Ingredients, mode of preparation and route of administration.

AI-aided cardiovascular disease diagnosis in cattle from retinal images: Machine learning vs. deep learning models

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in animals can severely impact the heart and circulatory systems, like those in humans. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for improving animal welfare and lifespan. Traditional diagnostic methods face challenges such as insufficient anamnesis information, high costs of biochemical and hematological tests, and increasing data complexity. This study aims to address these issues by developing AI-based diagnostic systems for fast and accurate CVD diagnosis in cattle using retinal images. A total of 1118 retinal images from 100 cattle were collected, with 52 diagnosed with CVD and 48 as non-CVD. The dataset is publicly available on Kaggle. We evaluated three machine learning methods (Extreme Learning Machine, K-Nearest Neighbors, and Support Vector Machine) and four deep learning models (DenseNet201, ResNet101, SqueezeNet, and InceptionV3) for their diagnostic capabilities. ResNet101 emerged as the most effective model, achieving an accuracy of 96.1 ± 3.15 %, sensitivity of 97.3 ± 2.96 %, specificity of 94.9 ± 4.07 %, and an F1-score of 96.4 ± 0.03. This study demonstrates that AI-based systems, particularly deep learning models, can significantly improve the accuracy of CVD diagnosis in animals, marking a critical advancement in veterinary healthcare.

Dietary Exposure to Pesticide and Veterinary Drug Residues and Their Effects on Human Fertility and Embryo Development: A Global Overview.

Drug residues that contaminate food and water represent a serious concern for human health. The major concerns regard the possible irrational use of these contaminants, since this might increase the amplitude of exposure. Multiple sources contribute to the overall exposure to contaminants, including agriculture, domestic use, personal, public and veterinary healthcare, increasing the possible origin of contamination. In this review, we focus on crop pesticides and veterinary drug residues because of their extensive use in modern agriculture and farming, which ensures food production and security for the ever-growing population around the world. We discuss crop pesticides and veterinary drug residues with respect to their worldwide distribution and impacts, with special attention on their harmful effects on human reproduction and embryo development, as well as their link to epigenetic alterations, leading to intergenerational and transgenerational diseases. Among the contaminants, the most commonly implicated in causing such disorders are organophosphates, glyphosate and antibiotics, with tetracyclines being the most frequently reported. This review highlights the importance of finding new management strategies for pesticides and veterinary drugs. Moreover, due to the still limited knowledge on inter- and transgenerational effects of these contaminants, we underlie the need to strengthen research in this field, so as to better clarify the specific effects of each contaminant and their long-term impact.

Assessing the Veterinary Health Care Needs of Knoxville’s Latino Community Through a Community-Based Participatory Approach: A Short Report

The primary objective of the study was to better understand the interests, needs, and perceived barriers to veterinary care of Knoxville’s Latino community. Investigators adapted a national survey designed to understand access to veterinary care for distribution to the Latino population through a community-based participatory approach with an established community center. Seventy-six percent of survey respondents (n = 46) reported that they consider the pet as part of the family. Forty-eight percent said their pets were not spayed or neutered (s/n), and of these, 39% said s/n was cost-prohibitive, whereas 22% did not know where to receive services. Twenty-six percent identified an inability to obtain treatment for a sick pet, primarily due to a lack of access to affordable care. Participants expressed interest in vaccines and parasite prevention (64%), training and behavior (36%), and information on veterinary and pet care resources (29%). The survey tool (provided in English and Spanish) and community engagement approach can assist animal welfare organizations in identifying and addressing community veterinary needs and barriers to care.

Transmission chains and molecular characterizations of extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae at a veterinary hospital in Chengdu, China

The rapid emergence of Extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) is a major global public health concern. Previous studies have identified that intensive medical care of dogs and cats in veterinary hospitals have accelerated the infections and spread of ESBL-E. To investigate the spread of ESBL-E in a veterinary hospital, a total of 202 samples including hospitalized animals, veterinary healthcare workers and environment were collected from a veterinary hospital in Chengdu, China. ESBL-E were identified by antimicrobial susceptibility testing and 16 s rRNA sequencing and were further conducted on ESBL gene detection and multilocus sequence typing (MLST). At last, strains with transmission potential were analyzed by whole genome sequencing (WGS). Our results showed that the overall prevalence of ESBL-positive isolates was 34.7% (70/202), with 55.3% (26/47) in animals, 29.3% (12/41) in healthcare workers and 28.1% (32/114) in environment swabs. Twenty diverse MLST types were detected, with ST744, ST231 as the most prevalent ones. Transmission chains of two ESBL-E.coli (ST744 blaCTX-M-18, blaTEM-1) from cat_21 to cat_14, and two ESBL-Kp (ST231 blaCTX-M-27, blaTEM-1, blaSHV-1) from cat_20 to cat_37 were further confirmed by WGS. Furthermore, interdisciplinary investigation and cooperation of AMR are needed to better limit the transmissions of high-risk strains and to implement effective public health interventions.

Owner-reported health and disease in U.S. senior horses.

Information on health care and health status of U.S. senior horses (≥15 years of age) is currently sparse. (A) Provide an overview of owner-reported (1) medical conditions, (2) management/treatment practices for equine metabolic syndrome and pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID), (3) frequencies of routine health care practices and (4) supplement and pharmaceutical use in U.S. senior horses (≥15 years of age). (B) Evaluate potential risk factors for certain medical conditions and for low routine health care. Online survey. Descriptive and inferential analysis (binomial logistic regression and ANOVA) of 2717 questionnaires from owners of U.S. senior horses. The most common owner-reported veterinary-diagnosed medical conditions were osteoarthritis (30%), dental disorders (15%), lameness (14%), PPID (12%) and ocular disorders (6%). Advancing age was found to be a risk factor for PPID (odds ratio [OR] [95% confidence interval, CI] = 1.14 [1.10-1.18]), dental (OR [95% CI] = 1.18 [1.15-1.22]) and ocular (OR [95% CI] = 1.05 [1.01-1.10]) disorders. Only 36% of horses were free of owner-reported veterinary-diagnosed medical conditions at the time of the survey. During the year prior to the survey, most routine healthcare practices (i.e., veterinary health care, dental care and anthelmintic treatment) were typically undertaken one to two times per year, while farrier visits occurred mostly every 5-6 weeks. Retired senior horses had a higher risk of no health care visits (OR [95% CI] = 2.1 [1.38-3.06]), no dental care (OR [95% CI] = 2.0 [1.31-3.00]) and low farrier attendance (i.e., ≤4 times/year) (OR [95% CI] = 2.4 [1.57-3.63]) compared with senior horses used for pleasure riding. The most frequently administered drug was firocoxib (18%) and joint supplements were the most provided supplements (41%). Potential recall, response and sampling bias. Risk factor analyses do not establish causal relationships. Medical conditions are highly prevalent in U.S. senior horses. Retired senior horses have an increased risk of low routine health care.

Pharmacokinetic Characteristics of Diclazuril in Japanese Quails (Coturnix japonica) and Domestic Pigeons (Columba livia)

Coccidiosis, caused by the protozoan Eimeria, is a significant disease in poultry farms worldwide, leading to substantial economic losses. Triazines, benzene-aceto-nitrile derivatives, are widely employed in the field of veterinary healthcare to combat the hazardous impacts of protozoan parasite infestation comprising coccidiosis. The current research was designed to investigate the pharmacokinetic profile of diclazuril, a member of triazines, in Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) and domestic pigeons (Columba livia) following single oral administration at 0.3 mg/kg body weight. 78 Quails (male: female, 1:1, 7 weeks old) and 78 pigeons (male: female, 1:1, 4 weeks old) were randomly divided into 13 groups for each species (n=6 birds/ group). Plasma samples were obtained at various time intervals (at time 0 [preceding diclazuril administration], and 0.5, 1, 4, 8, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, and 168 hours after diclazuril administration) to determine its concentration utilizing high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The non-compartmental approach was applied to assess the pharmacokinetic parameters via the aid of WinNonlin 8.3 software. In quails and pigeons, the peak plasma concentrations were 5.35 and 9.14 μg/mL attained at 8 hours, respectively. Additionally, the elimination half-lives (T1/2λz) were 30.74 and 26.48 hours, and the area under the plasma concentration-time curve from time zero to the last sample (AUC0-last) values were 155.67 and 343.57 μg h/mL, respectively. The mean residence time was 30.71 hours in quails and 39.68 hours in pigeons. Diclazuril exhibited favorable pharmacokinetic characteristics after oral administration at a dose of 0.3 mg/kg in quails and pigeons. However, to adjust the dosage regimen for curing coccidiosis, a future study is warranted to determine the clinical efficacy against coccidia infection. Moreover, further investigation is needed to evaluate the tissue residues and calculate the withdrawal time of diclazuril in quails and pigeons.

Current understanding and knowledge gaps regarding wildlife as reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious health issue shared across all One Health domains. Wildlife species represent a key intersection of the animal and environmental domains. They are a relevant but understudied reservoir and route of spread for AMR throughout the environment. Most wildlife AMR research thus far has focused on avian species, terrestrial mammals, and a selection of aquatic and marine species. Pathogens often identified in terrestrial wildlife include enteric zoonotic organisms such as Eschericia coli and Salmonella spp, in addition to nonenterics such as Staphylococci. Resistances have been commonly identified to antimicrobials important in veterinary and human medicine, including β-lactams, tetracyclines, aminoglycosides, and macrolides. Our emerging understanding of the dynamics of AMR distribution across life on Earth provides further opportunities for us to assess the risk it poses to veterinary and human health. Future work will require prioritizing which wildlife most exacerbates and indicates AMR in domestic animals. However, decreasing prices and increasing ease for metagenomic sequencing allows for synergies with expanding wildlife viral disease surveillance. Improved understanding of how wildlife impacts veterinary and human healthcare may increase opportunities for related research funding and global equity in such research. The companion Currents in One Health article by Vezeau and Kahn, JAVMA, June 2024, addresses in further detail the routes of spread of AMR across different animal populations and actions that can be taken to mitigate AMR with special consideration for wildlife sources.

Becoming a matter of veterinary concern.

Horses in Great Britain are living into increasingly older age and are often regarded as friends or family members by their owner. The horse is reliant on their owner to meet their needs and this paper discusses how horse owners frame an issue that becomes a matter of veterinary concern within the context of the older horse. Qualitative methods were used to explore the experiences of owners and veterinarians. Data were collected and analysed using a grounded theory approach during the period 2019-2022. Analysis identified that owners undertook an ongoing and iterative process of assessment, monitoring and decision making in relation to the animal and any changes they observed. Matters that became a veterinary concern required the owner to formulate the issue as something that fell within the knowledge domain of the veterinarian. Veterinarians had a medicalised view of older horse health and their perspectives on socially acceptable care were shaped by their understanding of species-specific needs, and whether owners were providing appropriately for those needs. The formulation of a matter of veterinary concern was itself shaped by an owner's experiential knowledge of both veterinary matters and their horse. The extent to which owners felt like they and their individual horse mattered during interactions with veterinarians affected whether they adopted veterinary advice and the nature of future veterinary employment. Findings demonstrate how matters of health, disease, and the role of professionalised forms of medical knowledge, are not static but constantly changing and interacting over time. An issue that became a matter of veterinary concern was contextual, and rooted in individual relationships. The significance of veterinarian-owner interactions in shaping future consumption of veterinary health care may be underestimated.

Multistate outbreaks of salmonellosis linked to contact with backyard poultry-United States, 2015-2022.

Contact with backyard poultry (i.e., privately-owned, non-commercial poultry) was first associated with a multistate outbreak of salmonellosis in 1955. In recent years, backyard poultry-associated salmonellosis outbreaks have caused more illnesses in the United States than salmonellosis outbreaks linked to any other type of animal. Here, we describe the epidemiology of outbreaks from 2015-2022 to inform prevention efforts. During 2015-2022, there were 88 multistate backyard poultry-associated salmonellosis outbreaks and 7866 outbreak-associated illnesses caused by 21 different Salmonella serotypes. Salmonella Enteritidis accounted for the most outbreaks (n = 21) and illnesses (n = 2400) of any serotype. Twenty-four percent (1840/7727) of patients with available information were <5 years of age. In total, 30% (1710/5644) of patients were hospitalized, and nine deaths were attributed to Salmonella infection. Throughout this period, patients reported behaviours that have a higher risk of Salmonella transmission, including kissing or snuggling poultry or allowing poultry inside their home. Despite ongoing efforts to reduce the burden of salmonellosis associated with backyard poultry, outbreak-associated illnesses have nearly tripled and hospitalizations more than quadrupled compared with those in 1990-2014. Because this public health problem is largely preventable, government officials, human and veterinary healthcare providers, hatcheries, and retailers might improve the prevention of illnesses by widely disseminating health and safety recommendations to the public and by continuing to develop and implement prevention measures to reduce zoonotic transmission of Salmonella by backyard poultry.

Evaluating smartphone-based optical readouts for immunoassays in human and veterinary healthcare: A comparative study

Recent advances have significantly enhanced the use of smartphone devices for medical diagnostics. This study uses high-resolution cameras in mobile devices to capture and process bioassay images, enabling the quantification of diverse biomarkers across a range of diagnostic tests conducted on 96-well microplates. The study evaluates the effectiveness of this technology through protein quantification techniques and immunoassays that generate colorimetric responses at specific wavelengths. It includes the assessment of bicinchoninic acid and Bradford protein quantification methods, alongside a conventional immunoassay for detecting mare antibodies in colostrum to monitor foal immunodeficiencies. Further application involves the readout of magneto-actuated immunoassays aimed at quantifying bacteria. The results obtained from benchtop spectrophotometry at 595, 562, and 450 nm are compared with those acquired using a smartphone, which identified color intensities in shades of blue, purple, and yellow. This comparison yields promising correlations for the samples tested, suggesting a high degree of accuracy in the smartphone capability to analyze bioassay outcomes. The analysis via smartphone is facilitated by a specific app, which processes the images captured by the phone camera to quantify color intensities corresponding to different biomarker concentrations. Detection limits of 12.3 and 22.8 μg mL−1 for the bicinchoninic acid assay and 36.7 and 45.4 μg mL−1 for the Bradford are obtained for protein quantification using the spectrophotometer and the smartphone app, respectively. For mare's antibodies in colostrum, the values are 1.14 and 1.72 ng mL−1, while the detection of E. coli is performed at 2.0 x 104 and 2.9 × 104 CFU mL−1, respectively. This approach offers further advantages, including wide availability, cost-effectiveness, portability, compared to traditional and expensive benchtop instruments.

AMR mechanisms in L. interrogans serovars: a comprehensive study.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the global health challenges of the 21st century. Data regarding AMR mechanisms in Leptospira interrogans, the causative agents of leptospirosis, have been relatively limited. Therefore, our study aimed to identify resistance genes and explore potential resistance mechanisms specific to particular serovars. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of 98 Leptospira strains, representing 10 common serovars, using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) FASTA files. Employing the PATRIC tool from the Bacterial and Viral Bioinformatics Resource Center (BV-BRC), we scrutinized the genomes for AMR genes. Our investigation revealed 32 genes associated with AMR, with 20 key genes consistently prevalent across most strains. Notably, we identified unique efflux pump systems in serovar Pomona, indicating distinctive resistance mechanisms in this serovar. In summary, our findings shed light on the genetic landscape of AMR in Leptospira, uncovering both common and serovar-specific resistance elements. The presence of unique efflux pump systems in serovar Pomona introduces a novel dimension to our understanding of resistance mechanisms. These insights underscore the importance of tailored intervention strategies and collaborative efforts between human and veterinary healthcare professionals, as well as environmental scientists, to address the complex dynamics of leptospirosis and its implications for antibiotic resistance.

What do veterinary professionals and clients want? Using discrete choice methods in veterinary research to determine preferences.

Discrete choice methods (DCMs) are a suite of research techniques for identifying individual preferences using choice information. Widely utilized by other fields yet rarely employed in veterinary research, DCMs have tremendous potential to improve veterinary healthcare by understanding and incorporating owner and veterinary professionals' (encompassing veterinarians, veterinary clinicians, technicians, receptionists, attendants, etc) preferences to optimize the care continuum. DCMs have several advantages over other stated preference methods, such as ranking and ratings, including improved data quality and actionability. However, they are not a panacea, and limitations that may affect DCMs' application to the veterinary field are outlined alongside realistic mitigation strategies. The information provided aims to increase awareness of DCMs and their utility in veterinary research and encourage greater uptake as a more robust method for measuring preferences.

Investigating the weekend effect in decompressive thoracolumbar hemilaminectomy for acute intervertebral disc extrusion: An observational cohort study of 460 cases (2018-2023).

To investigate if weekend surgery is associated with poorer outcomes in dogs with acute thoracolumbar intervertebral disc extrusion (IVDE) undergoing decompressive thoracolumbar hemilaminectomy. Retrospective observational cohort study. A total of 460 consecutive cases were reviewed, with 401 dogs undergoing weekday surgery (Cohort WD), and 59 dogs undergoing weekend surgery (Cohort WE). Medical records of a surgical referral center in the UK were reviewed. Preoperative patient demographic and clinical data, and postoperative outcome data were collected with a minimum 28-day follow-up period. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to model the odds of a negative outcome. Cohort WE had a higher preoperative proportion of nonambulatory dogs (p = .0115) but there were no significant differences between the nonambulatory (p = .3762) and deep-pain negative subgroups (p = .6199). Cohort WE had a higher risk of not recovering ambulation compared to Cohort WD [79.2% vs. 91.6% recovery; adjusted OR 3.010 (95% CI: 1.259-7.190); p = .0132] and had a higher risk of postoperative morbidity [32.2% vs. 17.2%; adjusted OR 2.015 (95% CI: 1.089-3.729); p = .0257]. There were no significant differences in other outcome measures between cohorts. Weekend surgery in canine decompressive thoracolumbar hemilaminectomy may be associated with poorer patient outcomes, specifically higher postoperative morbidity and a poorer rate of recovery of ambulation. This study demonstrates a weekend effect in veterinary surgery, which may be important in surgical decision-making in acute thoracolumbar IVDE. Further scrutiny of the patient's journey through the veterinary healthcare system is warranted.

Unveiling a rare case: cyclopia and its radiographic features in a non-descript primiparous heifer

Cyclopia, an exceedingly rare congenital anomaly, presents intricate deformities affecting the skull, orbits, brain, and nasal cavity, often featuring a singular or partially divided eye within a solitary orbit. Despite medical advancements, the precise etiology of cyclopia remains elusive, with emerging evidence suggesting a potential association with chromosomal aberrations. Timely detection of cyclopia is crucial for effective management and can be facilitated through ultrasonographic techniques. This case report provides a comprehensive exploration of cyclopia, elucidating both gross and radiographic features. Gross examination of the affected fetus unveiled a dysmorphic face characterized by a centrally located single eye, atresia of the nasal conchae, and micrognathia, collectively indicative of cyclopia. Radiographic analysis further revealed a small, severely deformed head, emphasizing malformations in the maxilla and the notable absence of frontal, nasal, and incisive bones. Synthesizing gross and radiographic observations, this report enhances the existing knowledge on this rare congenital anomaly, contributing to a deeper understanding of its complexities for veterinary healthcare professionals and researchers. Such insights are essential for advancing effective management strategies and fostering ongoing research in the realm of veterinary medicine.

Risk factors for tick attachment in companion animals in Great Britain: a spatiotemporal analysis covering 2014-2021.

Ticks are an important driver of veterinary health care, causing irritation and sometimes infection to their hosts. We explored epidemiological and geo-referenced data from > 7 million electronic health records (EHRs) from cats and dogs collected by the Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network (SAVSNET) in Great Britain (GB) between 2014 and 2021 to assess the factors affecting tick attachment in an individual and at a spatiotemporal level. EHRs in which ticks were mentioned were identified by text mining; domain experts confirmed those with ticks on the animal. Tick presence/absence records were overlaid with a spatiotemporal series of climate, environment, anthropogenic and host distribution factors to produce a spatiotemporal regression matrix. An ensemble machine learning spatiotemporal model was used to fine-tune hyperparameters for Random Forest, Gradient-boosted Trees and Generalized Linear Model regression algorithms, which were then used to produce a final ensemble meta-learner to predict the probability of tick attachment across GB at a monthly interval and averaged long-term through 2014-2021 at a spatial resolution of 1km. Individual host factors associated with tick attachment were also assessed by conditional logistic regression on a matched case-control dataset. In total, 11,741 consultations were identified in which a tick was recorded. The frequency of tick records was low (0.16% EHRs), suggesting an underestimation of risk. That said, increased odds for tick attachment in cats and dogs were associated with younger adult ages, longer coat length, crossbreeds and unclassified breeds. In cats, males and entire animals had significantly increased odds of recorded tick attachment. The key variables controlling the spatiotemporal risk for tick attachment were climatic (precipitation and temperature) and vegetation type (Enhanced Vegetation Index). Suitable areas for tick attachment were predicted across GB, especially in forests and grassland areas, mainly during summer, particularly in June. Our results can inform targeted health messages to owners and veterinary practitioners, identifying those animals, seasons and areas of higher risk for tick attachment and allowing for more tailored prophylaxis to reduce tick burden, inappropriate parasiticide treatment and potentially TBDs in companion animals and humans. Sentinel networks like SAVSNET represent a novel complementary data source to improve our understanding of tick attachment risk for companion animals and as a proxy of risk to humans.

Validation of a plasmonic-based serology biosensor for veterinary diagnosis of COVID-19 in domestic animals

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic recently demonstrated the devastating impact on public health, economy, and social development of zoonotic infectious diseases, whereby viruses jump from animals to infect humans. Due to this potential of viruses to cross the species barrier, the surveillance of infectious pathogens circulation in domestic and close-to-human animals is indispensable, as they could be potential reservoirs. Optical biosensors, mainly those based on Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR), have widely demonstrated its ability for providing direct, label-free, and quantitative bioanalysis with excellent sensitivity and reliability. This biosensor technology can provide a powerful tool to the veterinary field, potentially being helpful for the monitoring of the infection spread. We have implemented a multi-target COVID-19 serology plasmonic biosensor for the rapid testing and screening of common European domestic animals. The multi-target serological biosensor assay enables the detection of total SARS-CoV-2 antibodies (IgG + IgM) generated towards both S and N viral antigens. The analysis is performed in less than 15 min with a low-volume serum sample (<20 μL, 1:10 dilution), reaching a limit of detection of 49.6 ng mL−1. A complete validation has been carried out with hamster, dog, and cat sera samples (N = 75, including 37 COVID-19-positive and 38 negative samples). The biosensor exhibits an excellent diagnostic sensitivity (100 %) and good specificity (71.4 %) for future application in veterinary settings. Furthermore, the biosensor technology is integrated into a compact, portable, and user-friendly device, well-suited for point-of-care testing. This study positions our plasmonic biosensor as an alternative and reliable diagnostic tool for COVID-19 serology in animal samples, expanding the applicability of plasmonic technologies for decentralized analysis in veterinary healthcare and animal research.

Telehealth is a rapidly developing field of veterinary medicine, particularly during and after the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The world and animal owners' expectations are changing to the point where veterinary practice will need to adapt due to information technology advancements. This narrative review describes the status, benefits, technology basics, applications, limitations, and legal aspects of veterinary telemedicine over the globe. Veterinary telemedicine is a service alongside other veterinary services that meets client needs, delivers quality medicine, and improves animal welfare. The most frequently utilized veterinary telemedicine applications include teleradiology, telesonography, teledentistry, telecardiology, telerehabilitation, anesthesia teleconsultation, telehospice and telepalliative care, telecytology, tele-endoscpy, teledermatology, tele-ophthalmology, tele-behavior therapy, and veterinary education and training. Veterinary telemedicine has a bright near future and will impact veterinary medicine and animal welfare due to its numerous advantages. These advantages include its low cost, availability, involvement in veterinary health care, online payment, and effectiveness in many clinical situations such as follow-up after an in-person examination, inspection of surgical sites, or mobility. Nevertheless, veterinary telemedicine should receive more attention from veterinary professional regulatory bodies in all countries. Moreover, it is necessary to conduct more studies to evaluate how telehealth is beginning to improve veterinary care, particularly for underserved regions.
