Summary A list of names published or validated in 1998 is presented. In continuation of our previous efforts (Frederiksen et al.1998/1999), we present a 1998 list of new names considered to be of interest to medical and veterinary bacteriology. The following 45 bacterial names were published in 1998 in articles in the International Journal of Systematic Bacteriology (IJSB) (i. e. validly published) or published elsewhere and included in 1998 on the validation lists of IJSB (i. e. validated).

Systems Not Projects: focusing on evaluating overall student experience, rather than isolated innovations

ABSTRACT This article describes evaluation of the Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology problem‐based learning multimedia project at the University of Melbourne over a period of seven years. The design of the initial project will be described, together with learning benefits that short‐term evaluations revealed — including better information management skills, improved higher order cognitive skills, increased interest in the subject, better collaborative learning skills, better written and oral communication skills and better computer skills. All very impressive. However, follow‐up studies with staff and students in clinical years of the veterinary course indicated clearly that the positive benefits were not sustained in the long term, as this was a once‐off experience for students. We clearly needed a new approach. Since 1995, the institutional climate, opportunities provided by new technologies and international links have shifted the policy in the Faculty of Veterinary Science towards the development of online problem‐based subjects, hopefully enabling students to have a much greater exposure to a problem‐based learning approach.

Proposed new bacterial taxa and proposed changes of bacterial names published during 1994 and considered to be of interest to medical and veterinary bacteriology.

At the recent meeting of the International Committee on Systematic Bacteriology (ICSB) in 1994 it was decided to establish an ad hoc committee within the ICSB with the task of formulating an approach to communication of new names to users in medical and veterinary bacteriology. This is the first list which includes 61 names.

Description and evaluation of the semiautomated 4-hour rapid ID 32 Strep method for identification of streptococci and members of related genera.

The rapid ID 32 Strep system (bioMérieux, La Balme les Grottes, France) is a new system which allows the identification in 4 h of most streptococci and members of related genera encountered in medical and veterinary bacteriology. Four hundred thirty-three isolates first identified by conventional methods and belonging to the genera Streptococcus, Lactococcus, Enterococcus, Aerococcus, Gemella, Leuconostoc, Erysipelothrix, Gardnerella, and Listeria were tested. Overall, rapid ID 32 Strep correctly identified 413 (95.3%) of the strains, with 109 (25.1%) requiring extra tests for complete identification. Sixteen strains (3.7%) were not identified, and 4 (1.0%) were misidentified. The rapid ID 32 Strep system is a suitable alternative for rapid identification of members of the genus Streptococcus and of related genera.

Evaluation of the Sceptor system for identification of bacteria of veterinary origin

The Sceptor system (Becton Dickinson Diagnostic Instrument Systems, Towson Md.) was assessed for its ability to identify veterinary clinical isolates. A total of 605 bacteria, including 315 isolates of the family Enterobacteriaceae, 191 gram-negative nonenteric bacteria, and 99 gram-positive bacteria, were tested. Overall, 534 (88.3%) were correctly identified, 28 (4.6%) were not identified, 12 (2.0%) were incorrectly identified at the genus levels, and 32 (5.3%) were incorrectly identified at the species level. The Sceptor system correctly identified 292 (92.7%) isolates of Enterobacteriaceae, 165 (86.4%) gram-negative nonenteric bacteria, and 77 (77.8%) gram-positive bacteria. One hundred thirty organisms not contained in the data base were tested with the Sceptor system to assess the possibility of expanding the data base. The Sceptor system was an acceptable method for the identification of isolates of Enterobacteriaceae but not gram-negative nonenteric and gram-positive bacteria of animal origin. Development of a veterinary isolate-specific data base would improve the utility of the Sceptor system in veterinary diagnostic bacteriology.

Eubacterium fossor sp. nov., an Agar-Corroding Organism from Normal Pharynx and Oral and Respiratory Tract Lesions of Horses

A new species of Eubacterium, Eubacterium fossor, which was isolated from the pharynxes of normal horses and as a component of mixed flora from pyogenic diseases in horses, is described. This organism was found in oropharyngeal samples from seven normal horses, accounting for 22% of the anaerobic isolates, and was also isolated from pyogenic conditions (pleuropneumonia in two cases and parapharyngeal or tooth root abscesses in three cases) of horses. All strains were anaerobic, gram-positive rods which formed colonies that corroded agar. Noncorroding variants were not found. The addition of serum (5%, vol/vol) or Tween 80 (0.75%, vol/vol) was required to ensure optimum growth, which occurred in nutrient broth cultures (brain heart infusion or peptone-yeast extract medium). The fermentation products included major amounts of acetic and lactic acids. Strains of E. fossor sp. nov. had deoxyribonucleic acid guanine-plus-cytosine contents of 43 to 46 mol%. The type strain is strain NCTC 11919 (= Veterinary Pathology and Bacteriology Collection strain VPB 2127).

Evaluation of the sensititre method adapted for antimicrobial drug susceptibility testing in veterinary medicine

The Sensititre method specially designed for MIC determinations of animal pathogenic bacteria is evaluated. The MIC values of 251 clinical isolates belonging to different genera were determined by a modified Sensititre method and by a standard agar dilution method. Of all the compared MIC values, 90.7% were within one doubling dilution and 97.7% within two doubling dilutions. For ampicillin, oxacillin, chloramphenicol, erythromycin and nitrofurantoin more than 96% of the MIC pairs compared with less than 90% for neomycin, streptomycin, tetracycline and trimethoprim-sulpha-methoxazole were within one doubling dilution. With regard to organisms, the best agreement was for pasteurellae and the lowest for streptococci of which 95.8% and 87%, respectively, were within one doubling dilution. The Sensititre method modified for use in veterinary clinical bacteriology was found to be a reliable method for MIC determinations of common animal pathogens.
