On the Role of Physical Processes in Controlling Equatorial Plasma Bubble Morphology

AbstractIn this study, we present the results of an analysis of the morphological features of Equatorial Plasma Bubbles (EPBs) over South America. In this context, we analyzed data from the Disturbance Ionosphere indeX (DIX) maps calculated using around 450 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations. To mitigate the influence of magnetic disturbances on bubble development, only data from geomagnetically quiet days were utilized. This study covered the period from the post‐peak of solar cycle 24 (2015) to the pre‐peak of solar cycle 25 (2023), totaling 1321 nights with EPB occurrences, representing the largest data set of EPBs ever compiled for South America. Our analysis unveiled several key findings regarding EPBs and their behavior over the South American region. First, we observed that the amplitude of plasma depletions, as reflected in the DIX values, and the EPB latitudinal development follow an approximately 11‐year cycle driven by solar radiation levels. Furthermore, our analysis highlights the significant influence of factors such as the angle between the solar terminator and the magnetic meridian (T‐M angle), which varies inversely with the vertical plasma drift velocity during the pre‐reversal enhancement (PRE). Additionally, we discuss the longitudinal variations associated with magnetic declination, as well as the saturation behavior of EPB development with extreme solar flux.

Ionosphere response to geospace storm on 25 September 2016 over Kharkiv (Ukraine)

Instrumental observations of variations in the level of the geomagnetic field and ionospheric parameters were conducted during a weak geospace storm on September 25, 2016. It was found that a moderate magnetic storm was accompanied by variations in the level of the H component of the geomagnetic field up to 20–30 nT, as well as variations in the level of fluctuations of the horizontal components of the geomagnetic field up to ±(2–3) nT. It was revealed that the ionospheric storm was three-phase, mostly moderate. The decrease in the electron density reached a factor of 1.5, and its increase reached a factor of 2.2. The increase in the electron temperature during the negative phase of ionospheric storm did not exceed 200–300 K, while its increase during the positive phase of ionospheric storm reached 400–500 K. The ion temperature variations were within ±100 K. During the negative phases of the ionospheric storm, individual deviations in the vertical plasma drift velocity from those on a geomagnetically quiet day were observed both in the direction of decreasing the downward drift velocity (increasing the upward drift velocity at high altitudes) and vice versa. Significant (17–53 m/s) deviations in velocity variations towards positive values (decrease of downward and increase of upward drift velocity), accompanied by the rise of the F2 layer, after significant changing in the zonal component of the magnetospheric electric field (from –2 to 3.5 mV/m), contributed to the increase in the electron density and to the appearance of the positive phase of the ionospheric storm. During the positive phase, the increase in the velocity of downward plasma drift reached 9–20 m/s at altitudes above 450 km. The negative phases of the ionospheric storm were formed due to an increase in the electron and ion temperatures and a decrease in the O/N2 ratio during the storm. The generation of ionospheric storm positive phase at mid-latitudes apparently was caused by several mechanisms at once: a penetrating electric field, a meridional wind directed toward the equator, and downward plasma flows in the protonosphere. The phases of the ionospheric storm were accompanied by significant variations in the dynamic and thermal processes in the ionosphere.

Investigating the Role of Gravity Waves on Equatorial Ionospheric Irregularities Using TIMED/SABER and C/NOFS Satellite Observations

In this paper, for the first time, simultaneous atmospheric temperature perturbation profiles obtained from the TIMED/SABER satellite and equatorial ion density and vertical plasma drift velocity observations with and without ESF activity obtained from the C/NOFS satellite are used to investigate the effect of gravity waves (GW) on ESF. The horizontal and vertical wavelengths of ionospheric oscillations and GWs are estimated by applying wavelet analysis techniques. In addition, vertically propagating GWs that dissipate energy in the ionosphere-thermosphere system are investigated using the spectral analysis technique. We find that the vertical wavelength of GW, corresponding to dominant wavelet power, ranges from 12 to 31 km regardless of the conditions of the ionosphere; however, GWs with vertical wavelengths between about 1 to 13 km are found every day, saturated between 90 and 110 km at different longitudinal sectors. Filtering out vertical wavelengths above 13 km from temperature perturbations, ranges of zonal wavelengths of GW (i.e., from about 290 to 950 km) are found corresponding to irregular and non-irregular ionosphere. Similarly, corresponding to dominant oscillations, the zonal wavelength of ion density perturbations is found within 16 to 1520 km. Moreover, we find an excellent agreement among the median zonal wavelengths of GW for the cases of irregular and non-irregular ionosphere and ion density perturbations that are 518, 495, and 491 km, respectively. The results imply that seed perturbations due to GW with a vertical wavelength from about 1 to 13 km evolve to ion density irregularity and may be amplified due to post-sunset vertical upward drift velocity.

Nighttime morphology of vertical plasma drifts over Vietnam during different seasons and phases of sunspot cycles

This study is the first to provide the nighttime morphology of vertical plasma drifts over Vietnam at the equatorial trough and the northern tropical crest of ionization anomaly in the Asian sector. We use the h’F data in Vietnam from Bac Lieu observatory (9.28°N, 105.73°E, dip: 1.73°N) during the 2006–2019 period and Phu Thuy observatory (21.03°N, 105.96°E, dip: 14.49°N) for the 1964–2011 period, to calculate the vertical plasma drift velocity (Vd) and analyze the annual, seasonal, sunspot cycle, and sunspot cycle (SC) phase evolutions. For Bac Lieu, the PRE and minimum reversal peaks evolve according to the sunspot cycles. The seasonal average of the drift pattern shows that the PRE peak appears earlier one hour in summer (1800 LT) than in equinoxes and winter (1900 LT) and the minimum reversal peak occurred about 2100–2200 LT, except in summer, in which this peak identifies around 0100 LT. This drift pattern exhibits a semiannual asymmetry during PRE/minimum reversal periods with peaks in March and September/October. The evening-time pre-reversal enhancement (PRE)at Bac Lieu is dependent on the phase of the sunspot cycle. For Phu Thuy, the mean annual peak magnitudes of Vd during the PRE and minimum reversal periods exhibit a poor correlation with the sunspot number (Rz). For the SC seasonal variation, the lowest PRE peak magnitude in autumn appeared one hour later compared with winter, one hour earlier than summer, and the same time as spring, while the minimum reversal peak is larger in summer for SCs 20–23 and in autumn for SCs 20, 23, and 24 at around 0200–0300 LT than in another season at about 2000, 2200, and 2300 LT. The morphology of the seasonal average variations of Vd is rather similar for all SCs except SC 24 at Phu Thuy. The PRE peak during the high solar activity years (2000 LT) appears earlier about 4 h than that during the low solar years (at 2300 LT/0000 LT). The monthly average of plasma drift also exhibits semiannual asymmetry during PRE events for cycles 22, 24, and minimum reversal period for cycle 24 with peaks in March and September. In addition, it shows an annual variation for the remaining cycles during PRE/minimum reversal periods with peaks in the summer months. The pre-sunrise enhancement characteristic (0500 LT) was observed during all seasons and phases (ascending, descending, minimum) at Bac Lieu, summer for all SCs, equinoxes for SC 24, the ascending and minimum phases for the SC 24, and the descending phase for the SC 23 at Phu Thuy.

The Impact of Assimilating COSMIC‐2 Observations of Electron Density in WACCMX

AbstractThe present study investigates the impact of assimilating electron density profiles from the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate‐2 (COSMIC‐2) mission in a whole atmosphere data assimilation system. The observations are assimilated into the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere‐ionosphere eXtension (WACCMX) using the Data Assimilation Research Testbed (DART) ensemble adjustment Kalman filter. Assimilation of the COSMIC‐2 electron density profiles during the evaluation time period of 25–30 April 2020 leads to improvement in both the 1 hr forecast and analysis electron densities in WACCMX + DART. Compared to a control experiment that does not assimilate COSMIC‐2 observations, the assimilation of the COSMIC‐2 electron density profiles reduces the 1 hr forecast root mean square error (RMSE) and bias with respect to COSMIC‐2 observations at 300 km by 6.76% and 24.91%, respectively. Assimilation of the COSMIC‐2 electron density profiles does not significantly influence the RMSE and bias with respect to ground‐based Global Navigation Satellite System vertical total electron content observations. The equatorial vertical plasma drift velocity in WACCMX + DART is changed by ±5–10 ms−1 due to the assimilation of the COSMIC‐2 electron density profiles, indicating that the model representation of the electrodynamics of the low latitude ionosphere are significantly impacted by the assimilation of COSMIC‐2 observations.

Diurnal and Longitudinal Variations in the Equatorial Anomaly for Winter Solstice According to Interkosmos-19 Satellite Data

The equatorial anomaly dynamics in the winter solstice is studied based on data from topside sounding of the ionosphere from the Interkosmos-19 satellite for high solar activity. This is the final study on the construction of the pattern of equatorial anomaly variations under conditions of high solar activity. Changes in the equatorial anomaly structure with local time and longitude are considered in detail. It is shown that the anomaly begins to form at ~0800 LT during the creation of the winter northern crest, but the well-developed equatorial anomaly is formed only by 1000–1100 LT. The daytime maximum of the equatorial anomaly development is reached at 1200 LT. The foF2 value above the equator and the degree of the equatorial anomaly development (equatorial anomaly intensity, EAI) at 1200 LT vary with longitude according to changes in the vertical plasma drift velocity W. Three harmonics are observed in the longitudinal variations in W, foF2, and EAI at this time. The EAI increases up to the diurnal maximum 1.5−2.0 h after the evening W burst. Longitudinal variations in foF2 at 2000 LT are also associated with the relevant variations in W, in which two harmonics are revealed. The degree of equatorial anomaly development drops after the evening peak but equatorial anomaly is still well-developed at midnight and is completely absent at 0500–0700 LT. The EAI at different moments of local time differs rather strongly for different longitudinal sectors. The average position of northern crest is ~25° of the geomagnetic inclination I, and the southern crest is at ~–30° I. During the day, the winter crest is higher than the summer crest; by night-time, it is quite the opposite. Thus, a well-expressed equatorial anomaly is observed from 1000–1100 to 0000–0200 LT during the winter solstice.

Solar Flare Effects on 150‐km Echoes Observed Over Jicamarca: WACCM‐X Simulations

AbstractJicamarca Radio Observatory observations and Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere‐ionosphere eXtension (WACCM‐X) simulations are used to investigate the effects of the 7 September 2005 X‐17 solar flare on 150‐km echoes, electron densities, and vertical plasma drifts. The solar flare produces a remarkably similar response in the observed 150‐km echoes and simulated electron densities. The results provide additional evidence of the relationship between the background electron density and the layering structure that is seen in 150‐km echoes. The simulations also capture a similar rapid decrease in vertical plasma drift velocity that is seen in the observations. The simulated change in vertical plasma drift is, however, weaker than the observed decrease at the longitude of Jicamarca, though it is stronger east of Jicamarca. The effect of the solar flare on the vertical plasma drifts is primarily attributed to changes in conductivity due to the enhanced ionization during the solar flare.

Physical processes in the ionosphere during the solar eclipse on March 20, 2015 over Kharkiv, Ukraine (49.6° N, 36.3° E)

We present the results of observations of variations in the mid-latitude ionospheric parameters and physical processes in the geospace during March 20, 2015 partial solar eclipse over Kharkiv (49.60° N, 36.30° E) where the eclipse magnitude was about 0.54. The Kharkiv incoherent scatter (IS) radar and digital ionosonde were used for ionospheric observations and estimations of the parameters of the thermal and dynamical processes. At the time of the maximum obscuration of the Sun's area, an increase in the ionospheric F2 peak height by about 40 km was observed. At the same time, the electron density at altitudes of 190 and 210 km decreased by approximately 18.5 and 16.5%, respectively. During the eclipse, a decrease in the electron temperature and apparent changes in the vertical plasma drift velocity were observed. The observations and analysis have shown that the solar eclipse led to significant restructuring of the thermal and dynamic state of the ionospheric plasma over Kharkiv.

Diurnal and Longitudinal Variations of the Structure of an Equatorial Anomaly During Equinoxes According to Intercosmos-19 Satellite Data

Longitudinal and local time variations in the structure of the equatorial anomaly under high solar activity in the equinox are considered according to the Intercosmos-19 topside sounding data. It is shown that the anomaly begins to form at 0800 LT, when the southern crest is formed. The development of the equatorial anomaly is associated with well-known variations in the equatorial ionosphere: a change in the direction of the electric field from the west to the east, which causes vertical plasma drift W (directed upward) and the fountain effect. At 1000 LT, both anomaly crests appear, but they become completely symmetrical only by 1400 LT. The average position of the crests increases from I = 20° at 1000 LT to I = 28° at 1400 LT. The position of the crests is quite strong, sometimes up to 15°, varies with longitude. The foF2 value above the equator and the equatorial anomaly intensity (EAI) at 1200–1400 LT vary with the longitude according to changes in the vertical plasma drift velocity W. At this time, four harmonics are observed in the longitudinal variations of W, foF2, and EAI. The equatorial anomaly intensity increases to the maximum 1.5–2 h after the evening burst in the vertical plasma drift velocity. Longitudinal variations of foF2 for 2000–2200 LT are also associated with corresponding variations in the vertical plasma drift velocity. The equatorial anomaly intensity decreases after the maximum at 2000 LT and the crests decrease in size and shift towards the equator, but the anomaly is well developed at midnight. On the contrary, after midnight, foF2 maxima in the region of the anomaly crests are farther from the equator, but this is obviously associated with the action of the neutral wind. At 0200 LT, in contrast to the morning hours, only the northern crest of the anomaly is clearly pronounced. Thus, in the case of high solar activity during the equinoxes, a well-defined equatorial anomaly is observed from 1000 to 2400 LT. It reaches the maximum at 2000 LT.

Interannual Variability of the Daytime Equatorial Ionospheric Electric Field

AbstractUnderstanding the variability of the ionosphere is important for the prediction of space weather and climate. Recent studies have shown that forcing from the lower atmosphere plays a significant role for the short‐term (day‐to‐day) variability of the low‐latitude ionosphere. The present study aims to assess the importance of atmospheric forcing for the variability of the daytime equatorial ionospheric electric field on the interannual (year‐to‐year) time scale. Magnetic field measurements from Huancayo (12.05°S, 75.33°W) are used to augment the equatorial vertical plasma drift velocity (VZ) measurements from the Jicamarca Unattended Long‐term Investigations of the Ionosphere and Atmosphere radar during 2001–2016. VZ can be regarded as a measure of the zonal electric field. After removing the seasonal variation of ∼10 m/s, midday values of VZ show an interannual variation of ∼2 m/s with an oscillation period of 2–3 years. No evidence of solar cycle influence is found. The Ground‐to‐topside Atmosphere‐Ionosphere model for Aeronomy, which takes into account realistic atmospheric variability below 30 km, reproduces the pattern of the observed interannual variation without having to include variable forcing from the magnetosphere. The results indicate that lower atmospheric forcing plays a dominant role for the observed interannual variability of VZ at 1200 local time.

Unusual behavior of quiet-time zonal and vertical plasma drift velocities over Jicamarca during the recent extended solar minimum of 2008

Abstract. The influence of the recent deep and prolonged solar minimum on the daytime zonal and vertical plasma drift velocities during quiet time is investigated in this work. Analyzing the data obtained from incoherent scatter radar from Jicamarca (11.95° S, 76.87° W) we observe an anomalous behavior of the zonal plasma drift during June 2008 characterized by lower than usual daytime westward drift and its early afternoon reversal to eastward. As a case study the zonal drift observed on 24 June 2008 is modeled using a realistic low-latitude ionosphere simulated by the Sheffield University Plasmasphere-Ionosphere Model-INPE (SUPIM-INPE). The results show that an anomalously low zonal wind was mainly responsible for the observed anomalous behavior in the zonal drift. A comparative study of the vertical plasma drifts obtained from magnetometer data for some periods of maximum (2000–2002) and minimum solar activity (1998, 2008, 2010) phases reveal a considerable decrease on the E-region conductivity and the dynamo electric field during 2008. However, we believe that the contribution of these characteristics to the unusual behavior of the zonal plasma drift is significantly smaller than that arising from the anomalously low zonal wind. The SUPIM-INPE result of the critical frequency of the F layer (foF2) over Jicamarca suggested a lower radiation flux than that predicted by solar irradiance model (SOLAR2000) for June 2008.

Vertical plasma drift velocities in the polarization jet observation by ground Doppler measurements and driftmeters on DMSP satellites

Vertical and horizontal plasma drifts are investigated during the polarization jet (PJ) detection in the F2 ionospheric layer based on the Doppler measurements at the Yakutsk meridian chain of subauroral ionospheric stations. It is shown that the velocities of vertical and horizontal drifts are significantly higher than the background motion during PJ observation periods. The ionospheric plasma motion direction changes from upward to downward on the polar edge of the main ionospheric trough. Doppler measurements on the DPS-4 ionosondes are compared with the simultaneous measurements of the plasma drift on the DMSP satellites during their passage near the Yakutsk meridian. The two kinds of measurements are in good agreement with each other. During the magnetic storm of June 23, 2005, by measurements of the DMSP satellites, the velocities of upward plasma flows were 1.0–1.4 km/s at a satellite altitude of 850 km. In the ionospheric F region, this speed corresponds to 150 m/s. According to satellite measurements, the westward drift velocity reached 2.5 km/s. The development of the polarization jet in the ionosphere was accompanied by a tenfold decrease in the electron density in 15–30 min.

Spatial and temporal analysis of the total electron content over China during 2011–2014

In the present work we investigate variations of ionospheric total electron content (TEC) with empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis, the four-year TEC data are derived from ∼250GPS observations of the crustal movement observation network of China (CMONOC) over East Asian area (30–55°N, 70–140°E) during the period from 2011, January to 2014, December. The first two EOF components together account for ∼93.78% of total variance of the original TEC data set, and it is found that the first EOF component represents a spatial variability of semi-annual variation and the second EOF component exhibits pronounced east–west longitudinal difference with respect to zero valued geomagnetic declination line. In addition, climatology of the vertical plasma drift velocity vdz induced by HWM zonal wind field (∼300km) are studied in the paper. Results shows vdz displays significant east–west longitudinal difference at 10:00LT and 20:00LT, and its daytime temporal variation is consistent with the second EOF principal component, which suggests that the east–west longitudinal variability is partly caused by the thermospheric zonal wind and geomagnetic declination. It is expected that with this dense GPS network, local ionospheric variability can be described more accurately and a more realistic ionospheric model can be constructed and used for the satellite navigation and radio propagation.

A simulation study on the impact of altitudinal dependent vertical plasma drift on the equatorial ionosphere in the evening

AbstractWe carry out a simulation study on the impact of altitudinal dependent plasma drift on the equatorial ionosphere in the evening, under geomagnetically quiet conditions. Our study used the vertical plasma drift velocity data measured by an incoherent scatter radar at Jicamarca (11.95°S, 76.87°W). The data covered the local sunset period on 15 and 16 November 2004. The plasma drift had significant altitudinal variations in the vertical component, which is perpendicular to the magnetic field. We employed SAMI2 (SAMI2 is another model of the ionosphere) to evaluate the effect of the altitude‐dependent ion drift on the equatorial ionosphere. Three types of plasma drift velocity inputs were used in our simulations. The first input is calculated from an empirical model, the second is a height‐averaged drift obtained from the observed drift velocity, and the third one corresponds to the observed altitudinal dependent drift data. A strong equatorial ionization anomaly occurred in the results of all numerical experiments. Additional layers (F3 layers) in electron densities over the equatorial F region and “arch” latitudinal structures extending to lower middle latitudes were seen in the simulations driven by the observed altitudinal dependent drift. We further show that neutral winds do not have a significant effect on the simulated F3 layers. The results of our numerical experiments suggest that the simulated additional ionospheric layers and arch structures are associated with the altitudinal gradients in the vertical plasma drift velocity.

Comparative analysis of nocturnal vertical plasma drift velocities inferred from ground-based ionosonde measurements of hmF2 and h′F

Abstract Variations in the evening/nighttime ionosonde vertical plasma drift velocities inferred from the time rate of change of both the base of the F-layer height (Vz (h′F) ) and height of the peak electron density (Vz (hmF2) ) from an equatorial station were compared for better description of the E×B drifts. For better interpretation, both results were compared with the Incoherent Scatter (IS) radar observations (Vz (ISR) ) which is taken to be the most accurate method of measuring drift, and therefore the data of reference level. An equinoctial maximum and June solstice minimum in post-sunset pre-reversal enhancement (PRE) was observed for Vz (hmF2) , Vz (ISR) , and Vz (h′F) . The percentage correlation between Vz hmF2 and Vz h′F ranges within 55–70%. While PRE for Vz (hmF2) peaked at 19 LT for all seasons, Vz (h′F) peaked at 18 LT for September equinox and December solstice, and start earlier. The nighttime downward reversal peak magnitudes for Vz (hmF2) and Vz (h′F) are respectively within the range of −4 to −14 and −2 to −14 m/s; whereas Vz (ISR) ranges within −12 and −34 m/s; and the peak time was reached earlier with the ionosonde observations than for the ISR. The PRE peak magnitude for Vz (hmF2) , Vz (h′F) and Vz (ISR) varies between 3–14, 2–14, and 4–14 m/s for the entire seasons. Our results revealed higher drift correlation coefficients in both Vz (hmF2) vs. Vz (ISR) (0.983) and Vz (h′F) vs. Vz (ISR) (0.833) relationships during the equinoxes between 16–20 LT, at which time the F-layer altitude is higher than the 300 km threshold value; and lower for solstice period (0.326 and 0.410 in similar order). A better linear relationship between Vz (hmF2) and Vz (h′F2) was observed during the reversal (19–21 LT) phase period. PRE velocity was shown to be seasonal and solar activity dependent. Both Vz hmF2 and Vz h′F compares almost equally with the ISR measurement. However, the PRE peak magnitude for the drift inferred using h′F2 is closer to the corresponding ISR magnitude during the equinoxes; whereas the drift inferred from hmF2 best represent the ISR magnitude for solstices. We established that both Vz hmF2 and Vz h′F are governed by the same mechanism at nighttime, and as such any of them can be used to infer vertical drift as long as the 300 km threshold value condition is considered, otherwise chemical correction may be required for the F-layer uplift.

Ionospheric vertical drifts over an Indian low latitude station and its comparison with IRI-2007 vertical drift model

The vertical plasma drift velocity (Vz=dh′Fdt) of the Ionospheric F-Region is calculated using the Ionosonde data over an Indian low latitude station, Waltair (17.7°N, 83.3°E, dip 20°N). The vertical drift velocities thus computed are compared with those of the IRI-2007 vertical drift model during the post sunset hours of the high sunspot period of 2001–2002. The vertical drift values are entirely downward between 2000 and 0700hLT for the IRI-2007 vertical drift model compared to those derived using Ionosonde. The root mean square errors (RMSE) in the vertical drifts during the post sun-set hours computed between the IRI vertical drift model and Ionosonde measured values are found to be 13.54, 21.68 and 22.39m/s for summer, equinox and winter seasons respectively. The average vertical drifts derived using Ionosonde showing pre-reversal enhancements during evening hours (1700–1900hLT) over Waltair are found to be 8, 16 and 12m/s, whereas the IRI-2007 model derived values show 15, 35 and 36m/s during summer, equinox and winter seasons respectively. The correlation analysis of peak drift velocities derived using Ionosonde and those from IRI model with Rz and F10.7 shows more or less similar variation while they are differed in their variation with Ap index. A good correlation is observed between the vertical plasma drift obtained using Ionosonde and Equatorial Electrojet Strength (EEJ) except during winter, while the correlation coefficients computed using IRI model are little higher than those obtained using Ionosonde with maximum values during summer season. The percentage of deviation for IRI-model correlation coefficient and that of Ionosonde-inferred drift for equinoctial and summer months is around 50% and 25% respectively where as it is more than 100% for winter.

The influence of atmospheric tide and planetary wave variability during sudden stratosphere warmings on the low latitude ionosphere

Numerical simulations are performed for a sudden stratosphere warming (SSW) under different atmospheric tide and planetary wave forcing conditions to investigate the tidal variability in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT). The influence of variability of different tides in the MLT on generating perturbations to the low latitude ionosphere is also investigated. Significant changes are found to occur in the migrating semidiurnal solar (SW2) and lunar (M2) tides as well as in the westward propagating nonmigrating semidiurnal tide with zonal wave number 1 (SW1). The changes in the zonal mean atmosphere that occur during SSWs lead to an enhancement in the SW2 and M2 tides. The vertical wavelength of the SW2 is also changed, resulting in phase variability in the SW2 at a constant altitude. Significant enhancements in the SW1 are found to occur only in the presence of additional planetary wave forcing, and this demonstrates that nonlinear planetary wave‒tide interactions lead to the enhanced SW1 during SSWs. The amplitude and phase variability of the SW2 is found to be capable of producing temporal variability in the vertical plasma drift velocity that is similar to the observed variability. Changes in the M2 during SSWs can contribute up to an additional ∼30% of the total ionosphere variability; however, the overall influence of the lunar tide is found to be dependent upon the phase of the moon relative to the timing of the SSW. Although the influence is relatively minor, the SW1 also contributes to the low latitude ionosphere variability during SSWs. The simulation results for the vertical plasma drift velocity and total electron content (TEC) further illustrate that significant longitude variability occurs in the ionosphere response to SSWs.

Equatorial vertical plasma drift velocities and electron densities inferred from ground-based ionosonde measurements during low solar activity

Average values of ionosonde hmF2 data acquired from an African equatorial station have been used to determine vertical plasma drift (Vz) measurements during period of low solar activity. Pre-noon peak was around 1000h LT for all seasons. The peak daytime F2 drift is higher during the equinoctial months with an average of 18.1m/s than the solsticial months (14.7m/s). At nighttime, Vz is characterized first by upward enhancement around 1900h LT with a range of 0.3–8.0m/s, then by a downward reversal. The highest enhancement was recorded in December solstice and start earliest during the March equinox. The peak reversal values are 13.3, 10.7, 9.0 and 4.2m/s for December Solstice, September Equinox, March Equinox and June Solstice respectively. The observed simultaneous post-sunset rise in hmF2 and in vertical E×B drift together with a sharp drop in NmF2 at all season infer that electrons moving away from the equator are at a region of low recombination loss rate. The abrupt faster drift of the plasma away from the equator as indicated by the pre-reversal enhancement (PRE) in upward plasma drift is responsible for the sharp drop in NmF2 immediately after sunset. Some past results were also confirmed in this work.

Simulations of solar and lunar tidal variability in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere during sudden stratosphere warmings and their influence on the low‐latitude ionosphere

Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM) simulations are used to investigate solar and lunar tide changes in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) that occur in response to sudden stratosphere warmings (SSWs). The average tidal response is demonstrated based on 23 moderate to strong Northern Hemisphere SSWs. The migrating semidiurnal lunar tide is enhanced globally during SSWs, with the largest enhancements (∼60–70%) occurring at mid to high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere. Enhancements in the migrating solar semidiurnal tide (SW2) also occur up to an altitude of 120 km. Above this altitude, the SW2 decreases in response to SSWs. The SW2 enhancements are 40–50%, making them smaller in a relative sense than the enhancements in the migrating semidiurnal lunar tide. Changes in nonmigrating solar tides are, on average, generally small and the only nonmigrating tides that exhibit changes greater than 20% are the diurnal tide with zonal wave number 0 (D0) and the westward propagating semidiurnal tide with zonal wave number 1 (SW1). D0 is decreased by ∼20–30% at low latitudes, while SW1 exhibits a similar magnitude enhancement at mid to high latitudes in both hemispheres. The tidal changes are attributed to a combination of changes in the zonal mean zonal winds, changes in ozone forcing of the SW2, and nonlinear planetary wave‐tide interactions. We further investigate the influence of the lunar tide enhancements on generating perturbations in the low latitude ionosphere during SSWs by using the WACCM‐X thermosphere to drive an ionosphere‐electrodynamics model. For both solar maximum and solar minimum simulations, the changes in the equatorial vertical plasma drift velocity are similar to observations when the lunar tide is included in the simulations. However, when the lunar tide is removed from the simulations, the low latitude ionosphere response to SSWs is unclear and the characteristic behavior of the low latitude ionosphere perturbations that is seen in observations is no longer apparent. Our results thus indicate the importance of variability in the lunar tide during SSWs, especially for the coupling between SSWs and perturbations in the low latitude ionosphere.

Equatorial vertical E × B drift velocities inferred from ionosonde measurements over Ouagadougou and the IRI-2007 vertical ion drift model

F-region vertical plasma drift velocities were deduced from the hourly hmF2 values acquired from ionogram data over a near dip equatorial station Ouagadougou (12.4°N, 358.5°E, dip angle 5.9°N) in Africa. Our results are compared against the global empirical model of Scherliess and Fejer (1999) incorporated in the IRI model (IRI-2007) for 1600 to 0800 LT from 1 year of data during sunspot maximum year of 1989 (yearly average solar flux intensity, F10.7 = 192) corresponding to the peak phase of solar cycle 22, under magnetically quiet conditions. The drifts are entirely downward between 2000 and 0500 LT bin for both techniques and the root mean square error (RMSE) between the modeled and the ionosonde vertical plasma drifts during these periods is 3.80, 4.37, and 4.74 m/s for June solstice, December solstice and equinox, respectively. Ouagadougou average vertical drifts show evening prereversal enhancement (PRE) velocity peaks ( V ZP) of about 16, 14, and 17 m/s in June solstice, December solstice, and equinox, respectively, at 1900–2000 LT; whereas global empirical model average drifts indicate V ZP of approximately 33 m/s (June solstice), 29 m/s (December solstice), and 50 m/s (equinox) at 1800 LT. We find very weak and positive correlation (+0.10376) between modeled V ZP versus F10.7, while ionosonde V ZP against F10.7 gives worst and opposite correlation (−0.05799). The results also show that modeled V ZP– Ap indicates good and positive correlation (+0.64289), but ionosonde V ZP– Ap exhibits poor and negative correlation (−0.22477).
